Scosche

Our take on the Scosche passPORT

by Dominic Devito

If you own a new iPod touch, iPod nano, or iPhone, you probably know that you can't charge your device through a car stereo with an older charge-and-control interface. The Scosche passPORT IFWA USB charging adapter offers a simple plug-and-play solution that keeps your player charged and provides a pass-through for the audio, video and control signals to your head unit.

Simply connect the passPORT between the iPod or iPhone and the dock connector, and it'll provide safe, effective charging for the iPod touch generation, iPod nano, or iPhone in conjunction with most vehicle-specific and stereo-specific adapters. The passPORT does not enable audio, video or control functionality for adapters which initially did not support these features. Please see "Details" for a list of non-compatible stereos and vehicles, as well as a list of compatible iPod and iPhone models. Warranty: 1 year.

Does the trick

Written By Anonymous, Vancouver, WA on Thursday, December 20, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had it for a little less than a month now and it works great!!!!! I no longer need a separate charger for my 3rd gen ipod nana.
Pros:
Charges and plays music at the same time
Cons:
Didn't work on initially when I plugged it in, but I just disconnected it and plugged it in again and it's been working great.

Does the job, but not consistently.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A simple adaptor that I'm using to connect my 2009 Infiniti G37x to my Iphone 4. The car's "ipod" connector is compatible with previous generations of the iphone but not with the 3G and the 4/4s so I got this adaptor. The problem is that I seem to have to try plugging my phone into the adaptor several times before it will recognize that its been plugged into the car and start charging. If I don't use the Scosche adaptor.. the phone will still connect to the car ipod connector.. but it won't charge. I bought the adaptor specifically so I could PLAY and CHARGE the phone at the same time.. so its dissapointing that it doesn't work every time. As a result.. I've taken to not using the ipod connector in my car as often because the Schosche adaptor doesn't work as consistently as I'd like.
Pros:
Small, light weight
Cons:
Not consistent, doesn't always recognize its been connected to the iPhone 4, and start charging. Adaptor doesn't "lock on" to the phone so it does slip out kind of easily as other reviewers have mentioned.

Great Little Tool

Written By RandyW, Salisbury, MD on Sunday, May 20, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The PassPort is a great device for People with iPhones and iPod Touch, it lets users charge their devices while listening to music. I found there are glitches with using Pandora but it works and it's not even a designed feature. I'm very happy and would reccomend to anyone needing to charge and listen simultaneously!
Pros:
Allows charging while listening. Is a simple plug and play and very inexpensive!
Cons:
Slight glitching using Pandora app, but being able to use Pandora and even getting some on screen info is a major plus since that is not a design function of the unit.

Scosche passPORT

Written By MIke R, Colorado on Saturday, June 11, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit works perfectly (I deducted 1 star for the priciness -- $30 seems a little high for what is essentially a plastic box containing a couple of jumper wires). But having said that, thanks to Mr. Jobs and his apparently random decision to change the power-pin scheme on newer-generation iPods, we have little other recourse. This unit does exactly what it's supposed to do. And Crutchfield, as always, was great to work with.

Scosche passPORT

Written By Bryan, Rancho Cucamonga, CA on Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Works great as it should. Used with my 5th gen ipod nano and alpine headunit so
it would charge. Although it does not have a locking mechanism on it, during the
past 1.5 years it has never come disconnected from my ipod. Even during really
rough offroading, it sits in my glovebox and has never become disconnected.

Life Saver!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works great if you have a new model i-phone or i-pod and I love the fact that it charges both. It works perfect in my truck with my Kenwood ipod attachment for my Kenwood radio. It's a bit pricey, but not as much as getting another ipod and well worth it. Minus 1 star for the high price.

I use this product with my Alpine head unit in my truck and it works great. It
charges my nano and still allows full access from the alpine to all functions of the
iPod. It is small and as easy to install as plugging in the iPod. Great product!

Scosche passPORT

Written By Steve, Waldorf, MD on Wednesday, January 05, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My '09 Nissan is equipped with a factory installed AUX input cable and jack for
Apple products. When I plugged in a 4th generation ipod touch, the Nissan
display alert indicated that the Apple product would not be charging. Okay that
alert, and the ipod functioned perfectly except the ipod would not be charged by the
vehicle. So I searched the net for an adapter, read only about Scosche
passPORT. Not too many favorable reviews. However, I've dealt with Crutchfield
a lot over the years and decided to call the reputable on line dealer on
12/30/2010. The passPORT was at my house the next day. I installed the
passPORT and it did not allow the ipod to work at all. I removed the passPORT
and the ipod worked as intended (except it would not be charged), then
reinstalled the passPORT, and the ipod did not work. So I called
Crutchfield 01/01/2011and talked to one of their clairvoyants. He gave me
options in order to satisfy my purchase, and sent another Scosche passPORT that
arrived 01/04/2011. I installed the new passPORT and it worked as designed.
Turn the car on, plug in ipod to the adapter and the audio system recognized the
ipod immediately and I had full control of the ipod from the car touch screen
and hand controls. The ipod indicated it was charging.

Crutchfield sent a UPS RA as well.

Great product....and super service from Crurtchfield!

Fulfills a niche need but could be better

Written By Kimberly, Sunnyvale, CA on Friday, October 29, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a custom Kenwood set up in my car which lets me control my iPod through
the nav touchscreen. This was fantastic until the iPhone came along. I love
playing Pandora in my car, but it drains the phone battery. This adapter solves
that problem entirely. However, I would have paid a little more money for a
locking mechanism. It does fall out of the phone at the slightest jarring.
Which, in a car with a sport suspension, happens more than I'd hoped. That said,
it's still better than draining my phone's battery.

Not worth the money!

Written By John, San Diego, CA on Tuesday, September 28, 2010

This adapter is more annoying than useful. First, the adapter slides out of my iPhone consistently. Any tight turns or big bumps on the road & the music stops. I have to reach into my glove box & reconnect the adapter. I can't believe that for the mobile environment they did not opt for a latching type connection. In my system, this adapter also introduced noise. It was audible during track playback, or when the music was paused. The noise would be gone every time I disconnected the adapter. I plan on getting the Alpine adapter now as I want a connection that I don't need to worry about coming undone. This adapter is a total waste of money. Spend a little more & get the Alpine adapter. It will work correctly without all the hassle.

Helps make a fast charge

Written By Anonymous, Norwich, CT on Monday, March 29, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this item to use with thePAC iPod Ai-Net cable for Alpine and my iPod Touch. It is slightly loose connection to the iPod but never falls out. I actually turn my iPod holder to landscape view when this plug is in so they don't interfere with the stick shift in my 1997 Cabrio. I've gone from 20% battery to full charge on a half hour drive.

Ok Adapter

Written By Eddie, Glendale AZ on Saturday, January 23, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Could be better if it snapped into your ipod. Just slides in and while in the glove box it
vibrates out. Otherwise it works fine. I didn't experience some of the other issues like
buzzing or Interference. Tested both in my truck and boat. Also. Hope this helps.

Scosche passPORT

Written By Steve, Arizona on Saturday, January 23, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although this thing works, the cost factor is crazy for what it does.

It does not "lock" into the Ipod, so any cord you attach to it constantly falls out. If you put the Ipod in a Cradle like we do, this is highly annoying! We have to wrap a rubber band around it to keep it from falling out.

You would think for the price they could have included the locking clips to keep it in place.

Charges but audio is lost

Written By James, Denver, CO on Saturday, December 12, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Enables charging of my iPhone 3G through the stereo dock cable, but disables
Audio. I have a PAC to JVC ipod cable connected to a JVC KDSH99 - audio works
when the PAC cable is connected directly to the phone but when this adapter is
used, it doesn't
pass-through the audio and only enables charging. Kind of useless if you ask me,
although it sounds like it works properly for some others.

Other than the audio issue its a fine adapter, well built, etc.
