Alpine

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Alpine SWR-1043D

by Dominic Devito
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Bass production is all about moving air and Alpine's Type-R subs do that better than ever. Advanced suspension features give these heavies the extra-long cone excursion needed to push large amounts of air, while the two-piece parabolic Kevlar® treated pulp woofer cone and multi-roll Santoprene™ rubber surround promote accurate response. Best of all, these subs feature shallower mounting depths than previous Type-R subs, so you can fit them into more spaces in your vehicle.

The SWR-1043D 10" subwoofer handles up to 600 watts RMS for big-time output, and its dual oversized 4-ohm voice coils offer system wiring flexibility. It works well in sealed and ported enclosures so you can choose what kind of bass you want to hear and feel. The one-piece aluminum frame houses a double-stacked ferrite magnet structure for increased accuracy and power handling, along with a finned, radial heatsink that shunts off excess heat for long-lasting reliability with reduced distortion.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

Highlights:

  • 10" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils
  • Kevlar reinforced pulp cone with Santoprene rubber surround
  • cast aluminum frame with perimeter venting and radial finned heat sink
  • frequency response: 26-200 Hz
  • power handling: 300-600 watts RMS (300 watts per coil)
  • peak power: 1,800 watts

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Alpine Type-R Subwoofer: These redesigned, fourth-generation Alpine type-R subwoofers include several enhanced features to achieve even cleaner, deeper bass extension, faster, more accurate transients and even greater output capability than before.

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-R subwoofer has a two-piece structural parabolic Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted dust cap of the same material, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of injection molded Santoprene, that allows for an incredible amount of linear excursion and greater SPL. The High-Amplitude Multi Roll Surround Design allows for extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area. FEA Optimized for linearity and made with injection-molded Santoprene, the HAMR surround is a key part of the suspension system that allows for extreme excursions with accurate, distortion-free control

FEA Optimized Spider with Reinforced Layer Spider Integration: An FEA optimized Nomex progressive spider with reinforced layer spider integration ensures reliable and consistent control of the tinsel-leads to eliminate any possible mechanical noises or interference typical of many high-excursion designs.

Radial Vented VC Heatsink and Airflow Management System: Alpine's Patented Radial Vented VC Heatsink and Airflow Management System actively manages voice coil temperatures by forcing air directly across the heatsink system. This helps to minimize power compression and ensures reliable long playing time by actively eliminating output-robbing heat away from the voice coil. The new one-piece cast aluminum frame with integrated shorting sleeve uses the entire frame as a heatsink, to allow for sustained power output and handling, even in the most extreme of applications.

FEA Optimized Segmented Machined CRC Motor Structure: The new Type-R subwoofer has over 20% more motor force than its predecessor delivering more accurate, louder and cleaner bass with even more control, thanks to its new ten-piece, segmented, double stacked magnet structure. The optimized machined CRC motor structure also creates a symmetrical magnetic field while optimizing flux density to greatly reduce distortion, while further improving power handling and output.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensure for an ultra symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to greatly reduce distortion, while further improving power handling and output.

Oversized Voice Coil: The oversized (65mm), high-temperature (180°C), 4-layer dual voice coil offers more than 35% more surface area, allowing for increased power handling to 600W RMS / 1800W Peak.

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8-ohm load. If each coil is connected to a different amplifier channel, each channel will see a 4-ohm load.

Push Terminals: The push terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire up to 8 gauge, pin connectors, or banana plugs.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2-ohm load) or series (for an 8-ohm load).

    Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed and Vented Enclosure Compatible: The Alpine Type-R Subs have been completely redesigned to offer more installation flexibility and application versatility (in either a sealed over vented enclosure) to build the ideal sound system in your vehicle. These new designs offer a near 20% reduction in mounting depth, while offering even greater output capability.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box sizes range from 0.5 cu/ft to 1.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size is 0.75 cu/ft.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The recommended vented box sizes range from 0.8 cu/ft to 1.5 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size is 1.15 cu/ft. A slot port with the following dimensions should be used: 11" (W) x 1" (H) x 18.5" (L).

    Very Impressed

Written By Jeff, Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Don't exactly know what "coolness factor" means (makes you look cool? sounds cool while it plays?). Anyway i still give it 5 stars... I was debating between this sub and a JL w3 10" for my civic and that was when Crutchfield had them both at full price, but when this sub went on sale the debate was instantly over. I have it connected to an Alpine mrp-m500 amp running at 2 ohms in a sealed box and it hits pretty hard. I just wanted some punch in my system and this sub exceeds my expectations. CF shipped the sub for free and I received it 2-days after my purchase. Thats hard to beat... If your'e thinking about buying a sub, I definately recommend this one and I also recommend getting it from CF.
    Pros:
Great Value, wiring flexibility, great build, sounds great
    Cons:
    none.

i have this in a sealed box and i am running a 1k amp and at 2 ohms it hits pretty hard. i actually keep it set lower than what the amp can dish out at 2 ohms. Bang for the buck this is defiantly worth every dollar.
    Pros:
nice, tight and can handle a hard kick.
    Cons:
dual 4 ohm, not really a con unless want this set up but i wish it was the dual 2 ohm version instead

    2 in a truck

Written By Chris B, Carson City, MI on Monday, November 12, 2012

I have 2 of these in a FoxBox that i ordered for my 03 dodge ram quad cab...they fit under the rear seat in the pods nicely. . i have them hooked to a hifonics 1200watt mono amp and i am happy. . i have amp pushing hard but the bass boost turned all the way to minimum and it still out-does my old systems...i turn it up 1/4 of the way and it shakes everything in my truck....if you have the space i'd go with the new version of these, but if u are tight on cash and just want a solid, huge hitting system then 2 of these with a hifonics amp and you won't be dissapointed...i wasn't. .
    Pros:
    everything
    Cons:
didn't come with screws to screw down the speakers (no biggie really)

    Alpine 10" Type R

Written By Eric L, Baton Rouge La on Sunday, September 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hardest hitting, best sounding 10 I've ever had. I'm using a sealed box throwing a true 700 watts at it and it sounds great. I wasn't looking for "rattle the car apart" sound, I wanted a well rounded system with a quality driver to to the low work. This sub produces clean sound at a great value.
    Pros:
    Qualit Clean sound Great value
    Cons:
    None so far

    Old Faithful

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've used the R type sub for over 10 yrs now, always updating when the new model comes out. They have never disappointed me. They are hands down the best sub in their price range. They are comparable to a Jl W3 but cost much less. And they sound just as good, if not better. If you are looking for a good sub at a great price then the Alpine R type is definitely what you are looking for. All my experience has been with the 10 in and 12 inch models. And I'v NEVER had one blow, even after years of continous pounding. I've always powered them right around the rms rating, sometimes a little higher but never towards the max range. They are loud and give a great deep rich bass boom. I do have to say that they tend to sound better when they are placed inside a trunk versus a truck. A hatchback or suv setup sounds great as well.
    Pros:
Great Price. Good looking design. Heavy duty speaker terminals. Strong basket and magnet. Rubber surround gasket conceals mounting holes.
    Cons:
Max wattage rating is over rated.

Quality sound and bass for a small price!

Written By miguelito, Hawaii on Monday, July 30, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was kind of skeptical to purchase this at full price but when this bad boy went on sale it was a no-brainer. I had the previous generation sub by Alpine and it was okay at best. It provided some good thump but sound quality was marginal. So with that being stated I thought how much more improvement can this next generation sub have. Wow, I applaud Alpine for some serious effort put into these Type-R subs. By just picking these subs up and feeling it's stout weight and construction you know these will perform. These not only are shorter in mounting depth but they also handle more power than the previous. Plus, the sound quality is killer for the price paid. I mean this puppy won't beat out a higher quality & very expensive sub but it will hang with most. It's very fast and quick, keeps up with many styles of music, in my opinion. To top it off I just have this in a sealed configuration @ .65 cu ft. of airspace! I wonder what would happen to my hearing if I ported this sub!
    Pros:
solid construction, high power, and value for price paid
    Cons:
    absolutely none

    Crisp Tight Bass

Written By Brian S, Cedar Knolls, NJ on Thursday, October 13, 2011

Purchased this sub after doing a bit of research and I'm sure I made the right choice. I've always bought JL Audio subs because I think they make the best woofers but my alpine 10" type r hits just as hard and tight as my 12" W3 used to. I have my alpine paired up with a Rockford Fosgate Power t500-1, in a Bassworx reference series ported box, and this sub thumps. I listen from everything from Bruce Sprinsteen, Slipknot, Hip Hop and dance music and this sub handles everything i throw at it. Definatly recommend this woofer for anyone whos looking for crisp clean bass at a fair price

Great sub. Powering it with a PDX-M6 connected to a Pioneer P8300UB head unit in a sealed .75cu' box. I listen to mostly metal followed by techno, reggae and a little bit of everything else. This does great keeping up with the double bass in the metal and surprisingly hangs on pretty good to some of the sustained lows in the techno. I am very satisfied and happy I went with this setup.

    Buy Them!!!!!

Written By Cristian, Turlock, California on Thursday, August 19, 2010

Wow is what I can say! I was looking for subs in the 500-600rms watt range to push with my 1000watt rms amp! I've had solobarics, cvrs, w3s, Rockford fosgates, and while all were def great man these type Rs take 1st place! I got them at a steal of a price that's why I bought them! Had never heard type Rs before but always heard good things so I knew these new models were even better! Got them and put them in a simple sealed box to break them in! They hit nice and hard and sounded crisp and clear while not pushing them to the max obviously! My ported L5s I've had before hit harder though! So I decided after I broke them in they deserved their custom slot ported box! Well let me just tell u they put my L5s to shame!! They hit ridiculously hard and I know a thing or two about bass but these deff left me impressed!! The box is a 3cb ft slot ported box built to maximum ported specs and I'm glad I did!! My montecarlo is gonna fall apart! Ima wrap the box and build a trump panel then post a video of these things ok YouTube for all u to see that these are absolutely worth it!!!

These subs are EXTREMELY LOUD! I just bought 2 of them with the Alpine M1000 Amp and they hit extremely hard. I had to turn the Amp to 1/4 of the maximum gain and they still hit very hard. I would recommend these if you are looking for hard hitting, window-breaking sub woofers, but I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THEM FOR BEGINNERS or those looking for a little bass.

Overall they are great quality and are very tight.
