Our take on the Terk "Q"

Power up your radio reception! With two selectable FM modes (wideband and narrowband) Terk's Q lets you lock in on frequencies perfectly! For strong stations, use its wideband mode to enhance reception of all broadcasts in a 360-degree range. For weak stations, the narrowband mode employs Terk's "Pin-Dot Pre-Tuning" circuitry to zero in on a precise frequency: Once you've matched the frequency, simply adjust its low-noise amplifier (-20 to +44 dB gain) for optimum signal strength.

The Q's AM wing swings back 90 degrees to prevent any interference between the separate AM and FM antenna elements. FM gain is achieved through active amplification. AM gain, fixed at +15 dB, is achieved through a passive (non-amplified) antenna element.

Details:

  • dual-function LEDs (amplifier gain/signal strength)
  • 75-75 ohm transformer
  • AC adapter
  • 5-7/8"W x 4-5/8"H x 6-5/8"D
  • warranty: 1 year

Features

AM Gain: The Terk Q (AF-1) antenna provides a +15dB gain for AM, however, the signal is not boosted or amplified.

FM Gain: The antenna's gain control for FM signals can be adjusted from -20dB to +44dB. The further away from the radio signal, the more you should increase the gain. If you are close to a radio signal, you should decrease the gain to reduce distortion.

Tuning Modes: The antenna has two tuning modes:

  • Wide Band: Wide band tuning works best in most situations. The 8 LEDs on the font panel will turn from green to red as the gain is increased. The gain should be set to where there is the least amount of noise.
  • Narrow Band: For tuning to a specific station, you should switch to Narrow Band tuning with its Pin-Dot Pre-Tuning feature. The gain control and the LEDs will guide you to find the best signal possible. The left-most LEDs represent the lower end of the dial (88 MHz), while the LEDs on the right represent the upper end of the dial (108 MHz).

The worst.

Written By joel, San Francisco on Thursday, April 14, 2011

It doesn't work for me. Aggravation, having spent all that money for nothing. I have tried positioning the thing all over the place but so far I get tons of static, no matter what.

Terk "Q"

Written By Rick, Bayport,NY on Monday, February 28, 2011

Didn't work well when placed near the receiver. FM reception improved markedly once I
ran a coaxial cable up to my attic and placed the antenna up there, 2 floors above my
receiver. I think I had problems when the antenna was in the same room as my receiver
because of all the electronics nearby (home entertainment system) as well as my
wireless router. Also possible interference from foil covered insulation in the exterior
walls. Still Couldn't get my wifes favorite station from New York City (55 miles) so I
upgraded to the TERK FM Pro which gets NYC loud and clear. Since we don't listen to AM
I can't evaluate that aspect of the antenna.

Good value for the money, but not magic. You need to set your expectations, read the manual, and understand that radio waves can be difficult at times.

Great little antenna.

Written By Doug, Huntsville, AL on Tuesday, September 02, 2008

I would definitely recommend this, especially if you would like to listen to high definition radio. It really brings in the signals and makes it sound so clear that you would naturally think you were listening to a CD.

Terk "Q"

Written By Phil, High Point, NC on Tuesday, March 20, 2007

I was reluctant to buy the Terk-Q after reading the reviews on the Crutchfield web site. I had been using my old TV antenna as my FM antenna for years but I was having trouble recieving a weak FM station in our area. I bought the Terk-Q and I immediately took down that old antenna from my chimmney. The FM reception was great and what little I listen to AM it picks up the local stations just fine. I hooked the Terk-Q to the back of my reciever so it just comes on when I turn my reciever on so the lights are not always on. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Still doesn't work

Written By David, Connelly,NY on Tuesday, January 30, 2007

My previous review left out an important detail. I was trying to get a classical station which I had no trouble getting from my car parked outside my house, but to my horror, I got loud and clear, the nearby Christian station! Pin dot tuning is for Zippy (the Pinhead!). It simply didn't work.
