Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Infinity Kappa 693.9i

by Kristen Schaub

Infinity built the latest Kappa speakers with improved technology and high-end materials to provide you with outstanding sound reproduction. The Kappa 693.9i 6"x9" 3-way speakers feature light, but stiff woven glass-fiber woofer cones that won't flex or distort. The Plus One design offers a larger surface area for improved low-frequency output and efficiency, while longer voice coils produce tighter, snappier bass. Large magnets keep the woofers running cooler by placing more steel close to the voice coils to act as a heat sink.

Infinity uses the same Metal Matrix Diaphragm tweeter found in many of their popular home speakers, so you'll hear the music the way it was recorded with minimal coloration or distortion. A super-tweeter tops off the musical spectrum by broadcasting the extreme high frequencies.

The computer-optimized outboard crossover networks employ audiophile-grade components to separate highs and lows, so that the woofer and tweeter work together perfectly. Pre-wired crossovers eliminate a time-consuming step in your installation, and terminals at the end of the crossover wires screw directly to the speakers, leaving no chance for incorrect wiring.

Important Note: You should use an outboard amplifier to power these speakers.

Installation Note: These Infinity speakers do not include screws or speed clips. You may be able to use the factory screws to install them, but it's always a good idea to have an assortment of self-tapping screws (5/8" to 1") and speed-clips on hand.

Highlights:

  • 3-way 6"x9" speakers (pair)
  • True Four Ohm Impedance technology: speaker's 2-ohm impedance combines with speaker wire impedance for a 4-ohm load
  • Plus One® woven-glass-fiber woofer cone with hi-roll rubber surround
  • 1" edge-driven M.M.D.® dome tweeter
  • edge-driven ultra-high frequency (UHF) super-tweeter
  • computer-optimized outboard crossover with tweeter level control
  • direct-connect crossover dongle

    Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speakers use cones more surface area than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One design offers greater bass output and a significant increase in efficiency.

Woven Glass Fiber Woofer Cones: This woven-glass-fiber material is very light and extremely stiff, minimizing cone flex. This results in very low distortion and improved clarity.

Edge Driven MMD Dome Midrange: Each speaker has an Edge-driven MMD (Metal Matrix Diaphragm) dome midrange. The benefit is increased power handling and reduced distortion at high output. This technology also allows for better integration with the woofer.

UHF Tweeter: Ultra-wideband UHF soft-dome tweeters are used to ensure response to 30kHz. The tweeter has an adjustable output level, +0 dB (flat) and -3 dB.

High-Output Design: The high output 2-ohm voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring and extracts every watt from factory receivers, increasing overall system output and efficiency (relative to 4 ohm speakers). The speaker's 2.0-ohm impedance combined with the impedance of your speaker wire provides a true 4-ohm load to your connected headunit or amplifier. The speakers also benefit from increased power when you upgrade the wire and add aftermarket amplifiers, designed to power a 2-ohm load.

Crossovers: Kappa speakers include computer-optimized, voice-matched crossovers, using audiophile quality air core inductors and polypropylene capacitors. The crossover slope is 12 dB/octave.

Crossover Connections: Each crossover is connected to the speaker by a 6" wire. The input terminals are set screws that will accept up to 10 gauge bare wire.

    Crossover Dimensions:

    • Length: 3-1/16"
    • Width: 1-1/4"
    • Height: 1-3/16"

    Infinity Kappa 693.9i

Written By Jeff F., Susanville, Ca. on Thursday, October 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very well built. Very crisp high's and mids with real close to stock lows for my my Mega cab truck.
    Pros:
Brought back the fullness of my music from when I put in some defective rockford fozgates.
    Cons:
DIRECTIONS, DOES ANYONE GET DIRECTION'S FROM INFINITY. I had to call a friend who wouldn't think I was dumb to ask what setting for my music to set the button by the tweeter should be at.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To be honest wanted and desired POLK speakers. Though without alterations, it wasn't going to happen. So went with Infinity MAINLY because of thier 3 yr. warranty. Thought if they were willing to grant such a term, they stood by their product. Hopefully they'll never have to do so. Because as great as these speakers sound? Would hate to have to bear without. A true competitor for my beloved POLK!!!
    Pros:
Fantastic Sound. Music to my ears.
    Cons:
None thus far and fail to see any in the near future.

    Infinity Kappa 693.9i

Written By Anonymous, jacksonville, FL on Sunday, December 25, 2011

Replaced my kenwood system with an infinity system and you can really tell the difference when you crank it up, that is where you feel the power. When the speakers hit hard you can see my headlights slightly dim which is funny because it used to be my subs that made them do that
    Pros:
The clarity was amazing and the quality could not have been better.
    Cons:
The instructions that came in the box were basically useless.

    2004 Chevy Impala installation report

Written By AbsoluteJoe, Bergenfield, NJ on Monday, October 10, 2011
Installed in a 2004 Chevrolet Impala
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed Kappa 693.9i speakers in the rear deck of my 2004 Chevy Impala LS using the existing UQ3 rear amp. The Master Sheet made the tricky job of taking apart the rear deck to replace the stock speakers a bit simpler to handle. But the task of to removing the stock speakers to reuse the stock mounts needs to be explained better. The stock speakers are bonded to the mounts with black RTV, and must be carefully pulled apart between the speaker frame and the mount and the RTV removed. Do not attempt to pull off the stock spacers as you will damage the stock speaker cone - new spacers come with the 693.9i's. Unfortunately the foam material supplied to seal the Kappas to the mount is too short, so I just fastened the Kappas to the mount using the existing screws, with difficulty. The existing screws have integrated shoulder washers that leave no room between the lip of the frame and the rubber surround material, so you must be careful not to tear the rubber or crack the mount. The new spacers have no gaskets or attachment points and just sit in the speaker frame lip, so I'm considering using RTV to carefully bond the new spacer to the frame. I used the connectors supplied by Crutchfield to connect the Kappas to the existing amp and ran a test.

I am satisfied with the results so far. I'll also be adding a sub.

    Infinity speakers = Amazing!

Written By Zane, Mattoon, IL on Wednesday, August 17, 2011

These speakers were the first upgrade that I have done to my stereo system. They have been in for almost 2 years and they are still going strong. The first difference that I noticed was they clarity; WOW!!! For 6x9's these really bring the bass too. Like I put on my review for the Infinity Kappa 60.9cs; there is a reason why Infinity is known for their loud speakers. Match these up with an amp like mine (Infinity Kappa Four) and you will be blown away. Put is this way... these speakers play so loud AND clear that my ears will distort before the actual speakers do. But these and you will NOT be disappointed; guaranteed.

Pros: Loud, Clear. good bass, looks.

Cons: Nothing really except that the magnet on these things are rather large so some modification may be needed.

    These speakers are Powerful!

Written By Ryan, Newburgh,NY on Monday, June 20, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have these 6x9's in my 93 maxima, i love these speakers they have so much bass and they are so loud!! If you want big sound and big bass from your speakers then the Kappa 693.9i are for you. These Kappa's took about a month to break in, to where you can feel the bass from my car in your car. The 639.9i sound amazing but they will fatigue your ears if you do not have an amp and i suggest that anyone who gets these speakers purchases an amp as well. I am planning on buying the Rockford Fosgate Punch P400-4 to power my Kappa's and i will update my review soon after that.

    Simply Brilliant

Written By MKuzava, Washington, DC on Friday, May 13, 2011

My goodness where to start? First off I should confess I made a best offer on eBay and got a brand new unopened pair for $85 with free shipping. I'm running these through an Alpine head and Alpine T-420 Power Pack in dash amp putting out exactly 70 watts rms per channel. I have a tiny car and these aleviated the need to even consider a sub/mono channel amp, the bass is that good. I know for the price it's impossible to do any better, but I would have paid full MSRP for these, they are that good. I replaced an aging pair of Pioneer Premier 6x9"s with these and the difference is stunning. My only caveat is that they over power my front speakers right now, but that's to be expected since they are merely filler "get by til I can afford a pair of Boston Acoustics SR65s" Pioneer 30watt rms 6.5"s. Other than that pull the darn trigger and buy these.

    Awsome Clarity - Great Choice

Written By B. L. Ritchie, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on Wednesday, May 04, 2011

These are a great upgrade choice. They really hit the highs with a clear smooth response in the mid range. The bass is tight but it would be even nicer if they could hit some of the lows without using an external amp. The built in power of a deck is OK however these speakers love and need power.

Give these the power they deserve and you will really enjoy them for a long long time.

Great addition to my 03 Honda Accord

Written By RyanC, Winchester, VA on Friday, January 21, 2011

After replacing the head unit I bought these speakers for the back deck of my 2003 Accord*. These speaker where exactly what I was looking for. The sound quality is amazing, The lows speak nicely (they are not a sub woofer, so while the range that they speak is excellent, they will not hit the extreme lows as well as a sub) and the mid and uppers are crystal clear. All and all I must say that I am very pleased with the performance of these speakers. Well worth the investment in my opinion.

*These will fit the 03-07 accords. Mind you that they are not going to be plug and play. To get them to fit in my car (since I did not want two way 6x9's) I had to dermal out some of the plastic on the underside of the factory grill as well as make adjustments to the mounting holes. After all that the rear deck looks completely stock and I fit these speakers in. Doing that was worth the time.

Great addition to factory system after a few tweaks

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Added these to replace my stock 6X9's in my 2008 Nissan Altima.Had a few problems with it powered by my factory head unit-they demand a lot of power that the factory head unit cannot produce and when the volume goes up the factory system automatically cuts out the bass as a fail safe to prevent speakers from blowing. My solution:wire in a processor like an MTX Re-Q to the rear wiring and put in an amplifier then BOOM!All the bass came back x2!The Infiniti's were loud as hell and thumping drowning out the rest of the stock speakers!Wow!

I put these in the rear deck of my 2001 Toyota Solara. It was time consuming since I had to take out nearly all of the rear interior to install but once they were in they were well worth it. Clean bass and crisp highs. You can't go wrong with these.

After installing a pair of Kenwood 3-ways I was dissapointed with the clarity and frequency range, so I returned them and got the Kappas. These speakers are awesome, the built in LPF makes all the difference in the world if you're not running subs. I'm pushin them with a 300w Alpine amp that's as old as the hills, it just won't die. The $50 upgrade was well worth it.

Not pleased at all no BASS!!!

Written By Blood1, Queens, NY on Friday, June 19, 2009

I bought these and power them with a Kicker 350.7 (90W@2 Ohms) and there is absolutely no bass coming from these. I've tried everything, tweaking the signals sent to them, turning off the x-over on the amp so that the built-in inline cross over sends what signals it can to the woofer part and I'm just not pleased at all. My stock speakers in my 07 Altima were much better and produced a much richer, deep feeling bass. In the front I also have the 63.9i and those are ok for the highs. These are incredibly good for highs but very dis-pleased with the 0 bass from these things.

This speakers are the best on the market this days. I have an amp ready for them but amazingly this bad boys are loud ,this factory stereo on this car have plenty of power to run this baby's. on the other hand at the auxiliary input I'm using a Sony MP3 -- NWZ-A728 it has a equalizer that almost double the sound

    Nice Speakers

Written By james, riverview, FL on Wednesday, December 03, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Front door of an '08 Ram and man what a difference from stock speakers, I have highs now which is really nice. These have good mids too. As far as bass goes nothing compares to a sub and I have all the low end playing through my kicker l7. I would definitely go with these again if I needed another set. The crossover is a nice feature as well since it makes sure the tweets are only playing highs and the woofer is doing only mids. Couldn't be happier with the speakers or crutchfield thanks again Ringo.
