Our Product Research Team
At Crutchfield, you'll get detailed, accurate information that's hard to find elsewhere.
That's because we have our own in-house Product Research team — they open the box,
verify contents, check the owner's manual, and record dimensions, features and specs.
We stay on top of new products and technologies to help people make informed choices.
Inputs and Outputs Notes
Driver: The PSW505
uses a 12" long-throw polymer composite cone driver for deep, smooth
response and low distortion. For longer excursion, the woofer uses a hi-roll
Video Shielded: The subwoofer
is magnetically shielded to allow safe placement next to TVs and video monitors.
Amplifier: The subwoofer is
powered by a high-current amplifier producing 300 watts RMS/460 watts dynamic
PSW505's solid MDF enclosure (including a one inch thick front baffle)
suppresses enclosure panel resonance for distortion-free, accurate response.
Venting: The PSW505
features a wide, long, rear-firing slot-load vent (approximately 12" x 1-1/4") to
dramatically reduce turbulence, noise and distortion and significantly improve
3-Way Power Switch: The
subwoofer has a 3-way power switch on the rear panel. You can select
"Auto", which turns the unit on automatically when an input signal is
received and off a few minutes after the signal stops; "On", which
keeps the unit on until it is switched off, and "Off", which turns the
unit completely off (instead of placing it in a standby mode). The LED power
indicator glows green when the unit is on and red when the unit is off.
Control: The PSW505 has
a rotary volume control to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the
other speakers in the system.
The subwoofer's phase
switch allows you to select normal or reverse. If the bass sounds muddy or
unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass
Filter: The PSW505
offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 60-120Hz with a
the subwoofer is connected to a receiver through the LFE input, the low-pass
filter of the subwoofer is bypassed. The filter built into the receiver is
relied upon to filter the subwoofer output frequencies.
and Outputs Notes
(Unfiltered) Input: The
PSW505 has a gold-plated mono RCA LFE (Low Frequency Effects) input. This input
should be used when connecting to a receiver with a filtered subwoofer output,
such as those found on most home theater receivers (check the receiver's owner's
manual). The LFE input bypasses the subwoofer's built-in low pass crossover.
the receiver's subwoofer output is unfiltered, you should use either the
left or right Line Input of the subwoofer.
(Filtered) Inputs: The subwoofer has gold
plated left and right RCA Line Level inputs. These
inputs are for use with electronics featuring unfiltered "Pre Out"
jacks (Example: a separate pre-amp processor with a separate amplifier). It may
require "Y adapters" to connect the left and right outputs of the
pre-amp processor to both the subwoofer and the power amplifier.
Level Input/Output: The subwoofer has
5-way binding post connections for front speaker level input and output. The
subwoofer's low-pass filter takes the low frequencies (based on the setting of
the filter) and passes a full-range signal out to the speakers. This is the
recommended method of connecting the subwoofer with a Polk Audio RM-series Home
Theater speaker package and other "satellite" speaker systems.
Response: The overall frequency response for the subwoofer is 23-160Hz,
and the -3 dB frequency response is 28-125Hz.
Amplifier: The warranty on the
amplifier is 3 years parts and labor.
Driver: The warranty on the
driver is 5 years parts and labor.
