Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics S95

by Ken Nail

Boston Acoustic's S series speakers let you enjoy clear, natural sound, even with a low-powered system. And with a wide variety of sizes, you'll find a set for most commonly-sized speaker openings.

The Boston S95 6"x9" speaker features a 3/4" tweeter with a built-in cooling system for long term reliability and excellent power handling. A contoured tweeter plane guides high-frequency output to create a larger listening "sweet spot," while Boston's Amplitude Modification Device (AMD™) reduces harshness in the upper mids for clear, detailed sound.

The sturdy woofer cone teams up with a durable butyl rubber surround to produce tight, clean bass with minimal distortion. And you'll hear a smooth blend between the woofer and tweeter, thanks to the built-in crossover.

Highlights:

  • 2-way 6"x9" speakers (pair)
  • copolymer woofer cone with rubber surround
  • 3/4" Type-S3 soft dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-35 watts RMS (120 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 50-20,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 92 dB

    Boston Acoustics S95

Written By Thomas, Ohio on Monday, December 13, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was a breeze replacing the rear deck factory speakers in my '89 Chevy.
The sound is a big improvement, although it seems the bass is a little weak.
The supplied trim piece is useless, an actual grille cover would have better.

    Clear sound.

Written By Scott B, California on Thursday, October 21, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers put out clear sound, but not super loud. I picked these (with the
advisor's help) because they are lower power and a better match for my head unit since
I didn't want to add an amplifier.

I don't like the bezel they come with. There is no actual grill so I'm worried that mounted
in my rear window deck, there is no protection from dirt or debris getting on the cone. I'm
going to make an actual grill for them.

I just installed these in my 2003 accord this weekend. Sound quality even with
my stock head unit is incredible for such short money.

Also the install couldn't have been easier, as instructions and the wiring
harnesses were included. Customer service and quality from crutchfield can't be
beat! I'll certainly be returning when I upgrade my head unit

Put these in the rear deck of a town car to replace factory speakers and they
are great. Very clear and the bass is good. The hig's sound like the should with
some amplification, nice and clear. I have the alpine 45 watt amp that plugs
into the head unit and combined I do not need an amplifier or a sub. Great speakers.

    Great Speakers

Written By Alex, FT. Worth , Texas on Saturday, September 19, 2009

I have a 1997 honda accord, and I just purchased a Pioneer radio a few weeks ago to upgrade my stock one, which wouldn't play my iPod. I considered buying new speakers, because I knew my stock ones would go soon as they are nearly 13 years old. I called up crutchfield and asked which ones would work and they reccommended these. I read through the reviews and decided to go ahead and get them. Wow, they installed in nearly 10 minutes. They plugged right in, slid in the slot and all I had to do was fasten them down with my stock screws. They sound amazing. So much different then the stock ones. The bass is great, treble is great. It takes some tuning with the audio options to get them sounding how you want, but once you get everything tuned in, it sounds A+.

If you're looking to upgrade, and not burn a hole in your wallet, get these! You won't be sorry you did.

Good sound for mids and highs

Written By Kyle, Mansfield, CT on Sunday, August 23, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are excellent speakers, they put out good sound, but don't expect much
bass and they are definitely in the low-power range for 6x9s (only 35w RMS).
Honestly though, if you're planning on putting a subwoofer in your car, you don't
need anything that will put out any more bass anyway and without a 4 channel
amp powering your speakers, you won't be putting out enough power to make
these go at 35w RMS anyway.

Good product by Boston, and a good price.

    for midbass and highs

Written By baaqee, Orlando, FL on Saturday, February 16, 2008

this is a great speaker for midbass and highs. The speaker is not going to give you the low bass of a kicker would. If you are looking for something that is going to bang this speaker does not do that. if you are looking for highs and solid mids than this is the one, and when you add an amp it makes you feel like you are right in the front row of a concert. the speaker fits for honda civic 2004 but is very thigh because the trunk rods.

    Horrible Bass

Written By saaketham, Stillwater, OK on Friday, December 14, 2007

I replaced my 2007 Honda Accord's factory speakers with the S95s. Bass went down so bad, that I'm contemplating putting my stock speakers back. Its that bad! In my previous car, a 2004 Camry, I replaced the rear deck speakers with Alpines (forgot the model), and never did I wish I had a sub after that. I listen to many kinds of music - Pink Floyd, Guns n Roses, AC/DC, Enigma, Indian music, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg ... those Alpines rocked for all of these!

These Bostons, on the other hand, make even my bass-heavy music sound bad. Highs sound alright, but, bass is so bad, that I wouldn't recommend these speakers to anyone. Maybe they'll "loosen up" and become fuller-sounding in a few weeks, but .... right now, I'm disappointed!

    Good speakers, interesting install.

Written By Carlo, Katy, Texas on Monday, July 30, 2007

When I was looking to replace the 6x9s in my 2000 Grand Cherokee, Crutchfield said this speaker was not going to fit, but now it does.

Install: You have to use the plastic ring on the back... but for some reason, it is not a perfect fit. I have to cut it in half, glue it to the back of the speaker, and then install it into the car. Not a big deal, just an extra, unexpected step.

For the Grand Cherokee owners with Infinty systems: This speaker will only get bass...but a good amount of bass will come out of these speakers.

For the Grand Cherokee owners without Infinty systems or have an aftermarket headunit: The speaker's tweeters are amazing. I have the 6.5 inch version in the back doors and they are amazing. Makes me wish I had a driver, just so I can sit in the back and listen to music.

Four stars, only because the install.

    Perfect drop-in replacement

Written By Lori, Howell, NJ on Saturday, July 21, 2007
Installed in a 1997 Honda Civic
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to replace the stock speakers and head unit in my '97 Civic LX and decided on these as well as the matching S65RC's for the front.

These speakers truly lived up to their reputation and definitely perform well in all aspects. I found the highs to be a little over-strident at first, but after turning the treble down slightly on the receiver and turning up the bass, I found the sound to be much more balanced. The highs are extremely natural and detailed, lacking sibilance and harshness that I heard in-store with other speakers.

Note on the bass: As you may have guessed, these speakers are a little bass shy at first. Give it time. Personally, after driving around for only two weeks, I have heard a HUGE improvement in these speakers and the bass has increased by a significant margin. It's still not quite as full as I'd like, but at this rate I anticipate that they'll sound ideal within a month. Overall, the bass is just excellent. It's tight, punchy, and it can definitely dig deep when it needs to.

Installation: These were a true drop-in fit. They took under 30 minutes to install in my Civic. The speakers came with some kind of unneccessary black plastic piece as well as a cover that didn't seem to do much (the silver thing in the pictures). I did not install these as the civic already has a grille and I figured that one more piece of plastic would only encourage more resonance in my plastic-y Civic.

Overall, highly recommended. If you're looking for punchy, natural, clear, well-engineered speakers, these are the ones.

Ok to start the main reason i ordered these for my 2000 civic was the reviews. After ripping my back seats out and finally installing them i was very impressed. These are very efficent running off just my pioneer head. Bass isnt extreme but for most it should be plenty. They make a perfect mid range sound to accompany my 1 10inch JL sub. The highs are also very clear. These are exactly what i was looking for , Great Choice.

    Great Accord replacement

Written By Timothy, Wisconsin on Friday, June 22, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you own a new style Honda Accord Coupe and want a simple upgrade for the extremely poor Honda factory sound, you can't go wrong with these speakers in the rear deck. Very simple install. I now have adequate smooth bass, and can actually hear nice mids and highs. Only problem, I now realize how bad the factory fronts and tweeters are, which I thought I could live with until I heard these coming from the rear. I want to find replacements for the fronts Until then I will turn the fader toward the rear.

    Very clean and lively sound

Written By Charles, Minneapolis, MN on Friday, March 23, 2007

I bought these for my 2003 Accord EX. The rear grilles popped right out (one of the plastic tabs did not come out the way it was suppose to and fell into the land of the lost-Hondas fault) and the factory speakers unscrewed nicely. One of the four screws is in an awkward location, but it is reachable.

The connector that Crutchfield supplied worked perfectly. I hooked up the wires, dropped the speakers in and screwed them into place. I then replaced the grills. Total labor time, maybe 25 minutes tops. Most of the time was spent on unscrewing the "one" out of the way screw in each speaker.

I turned on the FM radio, and at first thought I had just wasted my money. However, when I moved into the front seat, and listened to a CD and my Ipod, I was very pleased with the sound.

I drove about 100 miles running errands, and had my Ipod running (direct connection with a periphial I also bought here at Crutchfield). It sounded great.

The highs were distinct and localized, providing a very detailed and lively soundfield. The mids were perfect. The bass was deep and solid but not overpowering.

These were perfect for my application, and well worth the money.

    Excellent Value

Written By Fred, Alex. VA on Wednesday, March 14, 2007

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    Excellent speakers !

Another drop in fit (literally) in a Crown Vic.
Just one S95 weighs MORE than both factory speakers
    together !

Bright highs, clear mid's, and a very tight bass.
Like another owner said, took a while to realize that
the bass on these is clean clear and tight, and there
is no *muddiness* at all, these speakers need an amp
to help bring it out. You need more, you need a sub.

My only complaint is that they do not have a high enough power rating IMHO

I put these in my rear deck about a year ago and didn't hear the great sound i wanted. The reviews were so good that i wondered what was wrong in my car?I also put the Boston Acoustics S55 in the front doors to match.

As i sat there and tweaked the alpine HU i just wanted to cry at how bad all 4 sounded.I went back to the crutchfield reviews and everyone loved them,so i looked deeper into why?
It was the Speaker Baffles all along! Most everyone who used the Speaker Baffles with any speaker were not happy with the sound.I cut out the bottom of the Baffles one at a time to test the different sound and WOW what a great day it was!I also did the same to the front 5 1/4's and now all 4 speakers sound really, clean and tight.Crutchfield rocks for all things Audio/Video!

    AWESOME SPEAKERS !!!

Written By screwstockspeakers, Philly, PA on Monday, January 08, 2007

When I first got these speakers a few months ago, I was kinda disappointed that they didn't sound any better than the stocks that I had removed from my 2006 Accord, prompting me to consider adding a sub. But, I actually held back on that decision because I noticed that these Bostons strangely got louder over time. Then, being the audiophile that I am, I eventually replaced my front door speakers too (which already sounded good) with the Alpine SPS-17C2's, and amped all four speakers up with a 4-channel Pioneer GM6200F, and let me tell you something: I no longer want a sub, because after setting the bass boost a little higher on the amp, it gets a little too deafening for me inside the car, especially with the types of music I listen to (heavy metal, hard rock, rap/hip-hop, crunk, etc). These amped-up Bostons are totally AWESOME because now, they drown out the ambient highway noises, rather than the other way around. All I can sum up is: GET THESE SPEAKERS, YOU WON'T REGRET IT (and make sure you amp them up to get their FULL potential)!!!

Installed in a 2003 Hyundai Sonata
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these thinking they'd be an upgrade from my rear stock speaks in my 2003 Hyundai Sonata. I didn't realize they'd improve my system this much though.

I bought an Alpine 9856 deck along with Boston Acoustics s95 6x9s from Crutchfield, and my system sounds "worthy" now. I was a little worried the speakers wouldn't provide that much bass response, but I was completely wrong. Paired up with the deck I bought, I'm pretty surprised.

I couldn't even afford to replace the front speakers yet and I'm almost amazed at the sound in my car. When I was waiting for Crutchfields order to arrive I was on here researching new front speakers (at very least), and also an amp and a sub. At this point, I realize (with my budget at least) there's no need. Just replacing the front speakers with Boston Acoustics would be a bonus, not a necessity as I belived before the aformentioned were installed in my car yesterday afternoon.

Great bass response for a 6x9

Written By Ted, Valdosta, GA on Thursday, September 21, 2006

My girlfriend is one of those people who likes to crank the bass up with little regard to how distorted it sounds. When I removed the factory speakers from the rear deck of her Honda Accord, both of the 6x9's had tears around the edges, from the abuse I assume. We installed these new ones and took the system for a test drive. Surprisingly, the Bostons held up to her demanding settings and sounded as good (if not better) as 8" boxes in my pickup. We're very pleased with these.

Great sounding speakers, not an easy install

Written By Dan, NY on Monday, September 18, 2006
Installed in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am

Purchased speakers for 2001 Pontiac GrandAm GT1 to replace rear deck speakers on the Monsoon System. Speakers do not fit as well as original 6X9 that came with the Monsoon System, needed to purchase screws that were shorter then the ones provided with the kit. Also the speaker connector was not compatible with the Monsoon system becuase of separate connections for tweeters and woofer on Monsoon system 6X9, where the new speakers had a built in cross over with one connection. I ended up splicing the wires and making my own connection. However once I worked thorugh the installation the speakers sound great!

    Loud and Clear

Written By Chet, Tampa, Fl on Saturday, September 02, 2006

Mounted these in the rear of my '03 Intrepid, to compliment the S55's in the doors. Awesome, and leagues above stock.
If you want some clean rears, With good highs, and mids, these are your speakers. Bass is probably 25% deeper than my stock speakers. You'll still need a sub, if you want punchy bass though.

Just a note to other Intrepid owners. These will not completely recess into the factory cutouts, so they will sit about 1/8" above the deck. Don't fear, the deck cover still fits just fine. Thanks to the Crutchfield master sheet, dismantling the back seat, and deck, which seemed intimidating, was cake work. There are 2 Nuts, and 2 Bolts, though. The sheet said 2 nuts only.

Start to finish mounting time, 50 minutes.
