Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Our take on the JBL GT-BassPro12

by John Pollard

JBL's GT-BassPro12 powered subwoofer adds a blast of bass to your vehicle so you can really feel your music's impact as you drive. JBL designed this bass system to shine in the car environment, tuning it for tight, responsive low notes.

Powerful bass from a 12" sub
The GT-BassPro12 enclosure features a JBL 12" sub that really brings the thunder with its polypropylene cone and hi-roll rubber surround. The built-in 150-watt amplifier is matched up perfectly to the sub, so it won't wimp out when it's time to rock. Use an amp wiring kit to power up the GT-BassPro12, and you've turned your car into a concert hall.

Unique port for compact design
The enclosure features JBL's unique Slipstream port, which offers shorter length with a wide-mouth opening that reduces port noise and distortion. This means that JBL can build a more compact enclosure, and still get great performance from this hard-hitting sub. The medium-density fiberboard construction offers strength and durability under extreme conditions, while the carpet covering and stylish metal grille help protect your investment.

    Features

Amplifier: The power output from the built-in amplifier is 150 watts RMS (450 watts max). The amplifier is counter sunk into the back panel of the enclosure (the heat sink fins protrude approximately 3/8").

Note: Neither speaker wire, RCA interconnects, nor amplifier wiring kit (power/ground/turn-on wires) are included.

Signal Input: The amplifier has both speaker level (harness) and line level (RCA) inputs. The input sensitivity range is 50mV-4V for the line inputs and 400mV-16V for the speaker inputs.

Crossover: The amplifier's low pass crossover point is continuously variable from 40 to 200 Hz; the crossover slope is 12 dB/octave.

Bass Boost: The bass boost circuit provides a variable (0-12 dB) signal boost centered at 45 Hz.

Status LEDs: There are two status indicator LEDs on the amplifier. A green LED lights to indicate the amplifier is turned on and operating normally. A red LED lights to indicate the amplifier's protection circuitry has been activated. The protection circuit activates and the amplifier shuts down when the input voltage (power) is too high or too low, when the amp overheats, and when there is a short between the amp and subwoofer.

    Dimensions:

    • Width: 22-1/2"
    • Height: 14-5/8"
    • Depth (bottom): 12" (the grille adds approximately 2-1/8", for a total of 14-1/8")
    • Depth (top): 9-1/8"

Remote Level Control: The included remote level control lets you adjust the output level of the amplifier from the front of the vehicle. It can be mounted under the dash, in the glove compartment, etc, and has the following dimensions:

    • Width: 1.625" (2.55" including the mounting flanges)
    • Height: 0.775"
    • Depth: 1.525" (2.028" including the knob and cable)

    Controls:

    • Auto Turn-On: two position switch; on/off; when using the speaker level inputs the amplifier will turn on automatically when it senses an input signal
    • Phase: two position switch; 0° or 180°; the sub's phase can be easily inverted
    • Crossover Frequency: rotary knob; set the low pass crossover point; continuously variable from 40 Hz to 200 Hz
    • Bass Boost: rotary knob; continuously variable from 0 to +12 dB
    • Level: rotary knob; continuously variable from 50mV-4V (line level) or 400mV-16V (speaker level)

    Connections:

    • Remote Bass: RJ-25 jack for use with the included remote bass level control
    • Fuse: a single 25 amp ATO style fuse protects the amplifier
    • Line Input: stereo RCA jacks (female)
    • Speaker Input: 4-pin plug for use with the included harness
    • Power Input: screw terminals for power, ground, and remote turn-on; each will accept spade terminals up to 0.325" wide (approximate)

    Big Box; Big Thump

Written By JamesA, Denver, CO on Thursday, December 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Large box takes up a lot of space in my Toyota FJ Cruiser. I seem to operate the sub at less than 25% of it's power and typically less than 10%, so this unit may be overkill for me.
    Pros:
    Easy install; hard hitting base.
    Cons:
Large box takes up lots of space.

Holy crap. Buy this and stop browsing around now!

Written By Badger G, Clovis, NM on Monday, December 17, 2012

You see the power and specs on this and say, "That's not alot at all! This can't be that great." Then you install it. There is no reason for something so simple to be this loud and clean. This thing pounds harder than my previous system which ran more than double this setup. Everything is pretty much included and it looks great. I dare you to find a system for this price that even somewhat compares with this sound and quality. It's not competition stuff but you will need Dynamatt, It is shaking everything in my G35 right now without even being turned up loud. You are in for one heck of an experience.

I'm using an 8 gauge wiring kit, and a 35 dollar 2 Farad Capacitor. No power drain/headlight flickering whatsoever. The amp doesn't even get close to hot. JBL perfection as usual.
    Pros:
Minimal power requirements, loud and clean, clean setup, all-in-one subwoofer system
    Cons:
You will need some Dynamatt once your car starts to loosen up from the beating its in for.

I was going to go with a Bazooka 6.5" powered sub and decided to get some advice from Crutchfield. When I talked to an advisor, he recommended not to go with the Bazooka for an installation in the trunk. Instead, he recommended this sub and I am so glad I listened! The amount of bass this unit puts out is quite amazing. It hits hard but more than that the bass is tight and crisp. I have listened to anything from rock to raggae to rap and all sound amazing. The remote level control is awesome so that you can adjust the bass level depending on what type of music you are listened to. Installation was very easy and I couldn't be happier with this purchase. Thanks Crutchfield!!!
    Pros:
Great bass, fast and easy install, looks great, remote is great

Installed this in my 2012 Subaru Outback. I was going to get the Sound OrdnanceT B-8PT but Im glad I bought this. Definatly has a thump to it. Great size to fit in the hatchback with room to spare. Purchased the wiring kit as well. With the help of the Crutchfield advisors I didnt have to purchase any extra wiring.
    Pros:
Very happy it came with a remote. Dont have to go to the back of the car to adjust the bass
    Cons:
Non so far. Put a carpet non slip pad under it, will see how it holds up on moving around.

Awesome Sub, Sounds amazing for a great price

This is the first sub woofer that I have purchased and it sounds great. Crutchfield's great customer service made ordering easy, and it was shipped a few hours after I placed the order. The free shipping was also a plus. Overall, the sub sounds great, and having the amp already in the box made installation a breeze. I'd definitely recommend it and this is coming from a cautious "first-time buyer".
    Pros:
    Great sound, easy installation

    Really surprsed

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My son and I intalled this sub in his 2001 Nissan Altima. The instal went very smoothly after we found somewhere to pass the power wire through the firewall. We cranked this up and plugged in the Ipod and we were amazed at the amount of bass this box produced. We lisened to everything from Metallica to Dubstep to Skrillex to rap and the amp kept up with no problem. This thing shook the rearview mirror easily and sounded excellent. It wasn't muddy or overly boomy. We played several bass tracks and test tones and it will play down to 40Hz and stll pound out bass. the only problem is we'll now have to amp the other speakers in the car to keep up with the bass output. As it is now we only have the level set to about 40%. After about an hour of listening and adjusting it I was surprised that the amp wasn't a lot hotter than it was. I could comfortably put my hand on it.

I reasearched this box for a few weeks before buying it and I looked at several others. This was perfect for what we needed. If you're on the fence about this sub I say just get it. I went to best buy and a local audio dealer and none of the other single subs i listened to came close to this sub for sound quality or volume. It exceeded all my expectations and I will be putting one in my Camry in the next few weeks.
    Pros:
Great bass. Great price. Easy to install.

    BASS!!!

Written By Jay, CA on Wednesday, July 04, 2012

After reading the great reviews of the The Sound Ordnance B-8PT I wanted a subwoofer setup that didn't take up too much space to install in the cargo area of my Xterra. The Sound Ordnance B-8PT fit the bill on size but not bass. Don't get me wrong, location is everything and if you have a space under a seat or a trunk this product may be for you but in the cargo area of an SUV, on the freeway with the windows down it just gets drowned out. Crutchfield excellent as always allowed me to return it and I purchased the JBL GT-Bass Pro12. No comparison. You will definitely sacrifice some space but the enjoyment that you receive from the music will make you feel good to listen to your jams while cruising or speeding up the freeway without a lack of quality. The JBL GT-Bass Pro12 is easy to set up and with the remote at your fingertips you can always adjust how loud you want it to go. I haven't turned it all the way up and at mid way reggae, rap and rock vibrate the seat and rear view mirror. I'm very satisfied with the switch and the BASS.
    Pros:
    crisp clear BASS !!!
    Cons:
the same as the other reviewers mentioned.

    Amazing for the price!

Written By Jon, Virginia on Wednesday, May 16, 2012

I just put this sub in my car a few days ago, and I'm loving it!. I would strongly recomend this to anyone looking for a subwoofer on a budget. I love that it has an amp already in it, cause that can cost you alot in itself, and then you still have to buy the sub on top of that! And don't think cause of the low price that its gonna come out weak in sound. It hits hard, and you can definitely feel it pound through the car if you want it to. It's also extremely easy to hook up, which is nice. Also to anyone that see's on here that its max power is 150, thats in RMS not Watts. Its really 450 watts. For $250 this is an amazing subwoofer!
    Pros:
Easy to install, pounds hard, convenient bass level control that you can mount up front on the dash, and clear sound.
    Cons:
    None

    Just what I needed!

Written By DaveS, San Anselmo, CA on Tuesday, March 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the first sub I've ever put in a car. I still need to do some fine tuning, but I'm absolutely loving what's it's done for the sound in my car. I primarily listen to rock, country, and roots music and I feel like I'm at a concert now with deep bass that you can really feel. I put in in the back of an 07 Ford Escape and it has plenty of juice to fill the space. It can really pound if you want it too. I keep having to turn it down. It's really helped my door speakers put out clearer mids too since I can run my head unit Bass EQ at 0 instead of +3. I can't comment on the ease of install since I wimped out and had a car stereo place do it for me. The "bottom" line is this JBL is exactly what I was missing. I get really excited about listening to music in the car now. The remote level control is essential and also has a handy power light on it, so you have the peace of mind knowing that it really turned off when you turn off the car and is not draining your battery.
    Pros:
Plenty of power for the average listener. Deep, fairly tight bass. Not too boomy.
    Cons:
Certain bass frequencies seem to resonate more than others, but that might just be the nature of my car's interior.

    JBL GT-BassPro12

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased a Sound OrdnanceT B-8P. Sounded great, but wanted something with some more juice and did not reach the limit as the volume increased on factory radio. There is no comparison. JBL GT-BassPro12 is amazing. I used the high level inputs, make sure you tap into both the left and right speakers to create a full signal. Sound is very tight and bass is accurate. This is the sub/amp combo if you want to do things right and have strong, accurate bass at high levels.
    Pros:
Quality of box (heavy), tight and accurate bass, connection options, loud
    Cons:
You have to flip the box over to connect the power, ground and remote turn on wires

i first purchased the infinity bass link for my car, it ended up having soe wiring malfunction shortly after using it, so i uprgraded to this sub. this sub isnt even comparable to the infinity. the sound clarity, volume, and sound levels the syb puts out are so much better! crutchfield advisors recommended this sub, and my entire car setup, and i am now in a wonderfully pounding, and clear car system. worth every penny and more to purchase this sub.
    Pros:
clear crisp sound, ported, easy to install, no extra wiring to connect the amp, great quality.
    Cons:
no brackets built in (easy fix, just use a few angle brackets to keep it in place).
