Kenwood

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Kenwood DPX308U

by Ken Nail

If you've got a double-DIN dash opening, take out that wimpy factory radio and slide in some Kenwood quality. The DPX308U CD receiver offers strong performance and useful features that'll make you wonder why you waited so long to replace your old radio.

Ready to roll with your iPod®
Once you plug your player into the handy front-panel USB input, just press the "iPod" button to the left of the big control knob and you're ready to go. You'll feel right at home when you navigate your tracks and playlists, with the help of easy-to-use search tools like Alphabet Search. The dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys eliminate the need to work through menus when you're making a quick search.

You can also switch quickly to "passenger mode" to control your iPod® or iPhone® from the device — useful if you're listening to streaming content like Internet radio stations. Kenwood also includes a wireless remote so your passengers can control the entertainment while you worry about the driving.

Variable color options
Playing nice with your iPod is important, but you want a new receiver to look good, too. The DPX308U cuts a distinctive figure with its sleek styling, glossy exterior, and prominent control knob. To top it off, you can set the display and button colors to match your car's interior. You'll be looking forward to driving at night, when you can turn up the sound and the lights.

Sound quality to rock your ride
This Kenwood's built-in MOSFET amp will impress you with its clean power, so turn it up if you want. You can use the 3-band equalizer for precise adjustment of the highs, mids, and lows, while eight EQ presets allow quick shifts to a tone curve that matches your music. The Speaker Settings function tailors the output of the receiver to match the size and type of speakers you've got installed in your vehicle.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The DPX308 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve.

Note: As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

1-Line, 13-Digit FL Display: The Kenwood DPX308U is equipped with a 1-line, 13-digit fluorescent display.

Variable Color Illumination: The Kenwood DPX308U features variable color display and button illumination. You can choose from one of 24 preset colors, have the unit scan through all 24 preset colors continuously, or customize your own color (RGB: 0-9). The display and button illumination can be set to the same color or set independently.

Dimmer: The dimmer function will dim this unit's display and button illumination automatically when you connect the orange/white Illumination wire of this player and the vehicle light switch is turned On. You can also choose to dim the display manually.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned "on" or "off" within the menu.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood DPX308U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood DPX308U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the DPX308U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System Q Sound Control: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Detail Audio Control: The Kenwood DPX308U features independent Bass, Treble and Midrange control when the System Q Sound Control is in User mode. The Detail Audio Control allows you to adjust the following settings for the Bass, Treble and Mid frequency levels.

    3-Band EQ Detailed Audio Settings
Center Frequency Q-Factor Bass Extension Level
    Bass 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, or 150 Hz 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, or 2.00 On/Off -8 to +8
    Midrange 0.5k, 1.0k, 1.5k, or 2.0k Hz 1.00 or 2.00 N/A
    Treble 10.0k, 12.5k, 15.0k, or17.5k Hz N/A N/A

Bass Boost: In addition, The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV1, LV2 or Off.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, USB/iPod, and Aux).

Supreme Setting: When MP3/WMA/AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Selectable 2V Preamp Outputs: The DPX308U features Front and Rear/SW preamp outputs. The Rear/SW preamp output allows you to adjust from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass, non-fading subwoofer preamp output.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood DPX308U offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Tel Mute: The DPX308U features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood DPX308U features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Tuner Presets: The DPX308U's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. The Kenwood DPX308U offers two preset modes.

    • Normal: You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets (total of 24).
    • Mix: A total of 6 stations can be assigned to a total of 6 preset buttons, regardless of AM/FM band. You can recall a preset station without switching between bands.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

Direct Access Tuning: Using the included remote control, you can directly enter a station's frequency from the remote's numeric keypad.

Forced Mono: This function reduces the noise when stereo broadcasts are received as monaural.

    Disc Playback

    DPX308U

Written By Les, Huntsville, Al on Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Only used and rated this unit on USB support. I had this unit for over a year before selling the car (the radio helped). I needed USB. It does what it claims. Now I need another for a used Toyota. What troubles me is the fact that the volume knob on my factory radio can be reached without leaning forward. But, the rotary knob in the Kenwood is off more to the other side where I would have to lean forward to reach it. Kenwood can change that I hope on the next go-around. Also, had to find and fumble with the remote to change folders because there was no dedicated button to do that (and there is on the factory Toyota CD radio I now have. Will someone PLEASE design a radio that will respond to voice (PAUSE) followed by other voice commands like Advance and Change Folder. My Garmin now does that just fine and I don't need to be pulling off the interstate just to skip a folder.
    Pros:
Nice if you need Bluetooth. Excellent hardware.
    Cons:
User Interface, position, size, and availability of buttons could use some more thought. The lettering was small enough and the unit far enough away that neither of my bi-focal lenses could be used, so had to get a special driving glass perscription that focused on just the dash or the road.

Nice unit, fussy display, tiny buttons

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The factory unit in my '06 Focus died so it was time to replace it. I liked the USB and aux inputs on this unit and the price was right so I gave it a roll. It sounds way better than the factory unit, which is really the bottom line for me. But I have to admit, the buttons on this thing are itty bitty and so hard to work when you're trying to pay attention to the road. Also, setting all the settings involves a lot of pogo-sticking through menus, which was tedious and I tended to get lost.

I really would have preferred more conservative styling. Really, at this price range I couldn't find any that didn't look all gee golly whiz bang. I don't need that. I want sound quality and good usability of the controls.

Finally, I bought the Metra steering-wheel control interface and the silly thing thinks this is a JVC unit and therefore took several extra, maddening steps to install.
    Pros:
Sound quality better than the factory unit
    Cons:
Setup menus difficult to use Tiny buttons

This stereo replaced the great sounding am/fm 6 disk Cd, cassett system (210 watts total). The old systems LCD display(s) started to get buggy, and wouldn't show correctly at time after 10 year of ownership! So it was replaced with this system. I can honestly say that the sound Quality is the same or better...no complaints there as I was very satisfied with the factory unit.
    Pros:
Great Looks, Great sound, Easy install with the right DD tools, easy navigation once you get the feel for it!
    Cons:
Could come with a more indepth user manual

This deck has some great features and extreme ease-of-use right outta the box!! I like how you can set the display screen as one color and the buttons as another. Sound quality is light years better than the factory deck in my girlfriend's Camry.
    Pros:
Source selection for iPhone, Aux In, CD and Radio are all in one button; dual color selection; remote included.
    Cons:
There are no rear inputs for Aux In and USB, which means you MUST have wires hanging off the front of a brand new afternmarket deck!!!

Awesome radio for the money!! I put it in my 1998 explorer and it sounds amazing! Be sure to get the proper harness with the kit. I accidentally ordered the wrong one, but Crutchfield helped me troubleshoot the issue and sent me the proper one for free! Great value, great customer support and just an overall pleasure to deal with!
    Pros:
Great sound quality, USB port, cool color display and ease of use.
    Cons:
None in particular. I had to modify my dash a little, but thats not the radios fault.

looks awesome in my 86' Dodge Conquest TSI

Written By Spencer, Fort Jones, CA on Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Great Head Unit! - despite Crutchfields car selection tool saying that this head unit wont fit in any 86 or older Dodge Conquests or Mitsubishi Starions this stereo fits perfectly with minor modifications to the factory mounting brackets. I was amazed at how good this stereo looks in the dash, it has the clean look of a stock head unit but with much better sound quality and features and at night it lights up bright enough to see it clearly but not so bright that its brighter than all the other dash lights or puts a glare on the windshield. I also like the equalizer and all the other nice features that show how well designed it is like the separate amp and power antenna leads so the antenna only goes up when using the radio and your amp will still turn on regardless of what source you are listening to. I think this radio will look great in any car old or new and i highly recommend it. I also plan on buying the PAC SWI-RC steering wheel adapter because i know it will work with Conquests and Starions as well
    Pros:
all the nice features and the sound quality
    Cons:
none this is a great product

    Almost Perfect

Written By KevinV, Pasco, WA on Sunday, October 21, 2012
Installed in a 2003 Mazda Protege
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this radio to install in my sister's 2003 Mazda Protege. Could not have been happier. Was looking for something that would easily fit and have iPod control. Almost bought a cheaper JVC model and am soooo glad I stumbled upon this Kenwood. All the reviews I have read to-date about this radio are absolutely correct. Makes the stock speakers sound a LOT better. Was easier than I expected to install. Did not need the Metra DIN Head dash kit whatsoever. When researching radios that would fit the Protege, this radio had a couple red flags regarding installation. "Modified Fit" was not correct as the rear factory bracket did not have to be removed and the mounting hardware that came with the radio worked fine. Nothing extra needed. I still trust Crutchfield for knowing what fits and doesn't, but hope their techs take another look at this radio and Mazda applications. Probably could have saved money in not tacking on the extra installation accessories.

Almost perfect, except...the tuner preset buttons are tiny, the clock is not visible when the radio is powered off, and the menu system when you want to change settings or adjust the audio is rather cumbersome.
    Pros:
Sound quality. Stock speakers now sound upper class. Display. Lots of info and color that can be turned off if desired! Clock visible continually when powered up. iPod Control.
    Cons:
Tiny preset buttons. Clock not visible when turned off. Less than smooth menu system. Looking to adjust bass and treble quickly? Not gonna happen. Glossy front panel. Loves to attract fingerprints.

I purchased my receiver 2 weeks ago and purchased an install card. I am enjoying my new receiver and had a good experience using install card. I thought about installing it myself, but after reading some of the other posts, I decided to pay to have someone else install it. The best money I could spend. The receiver makes my original speakers that came with my car a little better, but noticably different when I use my ipod! WOW! No regrets about purchasing this unit yet. I am very pleased with it.

I've bought many receivers over the years for my cars and have been satisfied with them all, but this receiver has the best sound of any I've bought. The complaint I most often have about car stereos is the lack of bass response; I do not have that complaint with this system. This receiver gives you the ability to tailor the frequency response in several bands as well as a basic "bass boost" function which allows you to tune out the frequency losses due to the inherently complex environment created by the interior of a car. You won't be disappointed if you buy this unit.

    The Kenwood DPX308U

Written By Indy, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA on Saturday, July 14, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using Kenwood products since the 8-Track days. Kenwood has never let me down and the Kenwood DPX308U lives up to the billing. Having features you would see in much more expensive units, this Kenwood CD receiver is a great value for the money. Equipped with 22 watts RMS (the actual power to the speakers), the MOSFET amp delivers plenty of punch for normal everyday driving. This unit is installed in my 2003 Ford Ranger 4-door supercab. Ranger has a 6" X 8" Pioneer speaker in each of the 4 doors and 2 Pioneer 10" subwoofers and sub amp behind the front seats. You can change the face to 24 different preset colors or you can customize it to your car's exact color to make it look factory. There is bass, mid, treble, subwoofer and volume offsets for each source (tuner, USB, portable/iphone and CD). You also can adjust the unit to the type of speakers you have in your vehicle 4", 5" 6", 6 X 9 or OEM. The volume offset maintains equal volumes for each source so you don't get blasted and hurt your speakers when switching from one source to another. The Kenwood DPX308U is also pretty easy to use by following the instructions in the instruction manual. It is better to set up everything before hitting the road. I have no problem recommending this Kenwood DPX308U CD receiver to anyone who is looking for a great CD receiver and wants alot of features and don't break the bank! If you can use a DD din receiver, you won't be disappointed with this one!
    Pros:
Multi color options with user custom setting, clock is super-easy to set, many features for the money, good clean sound at all volume levels, nice looking unit with easy to read display. Custom speaker settings, volume offset and bass, mid and treble lever adjustment and freq settings make a great custom sound for your particular vehicle. Clock displays time even if unit is in Standby mode. Also the SW preout is nice for adding a subwoofer and amp. Great features for what you pay.
    Cons:
Only reason I did not give 5 stars is because all you get with this Kenwood DPX308U is a "quick-start" guide which only gives basic features. You have to download the "instruction" manual and then print out 41 pages. This manual should have been included so when you are sitting in your vehicle setting everything on the unit, you could refer to the instruction manual. As for the unit itself, I cannot find any cons.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If Sound Quality had 10 stars I would give it 10. I have a 04 Nissan Titan with Rockford Fostgate sound system and it sounded great with stock head unit. With this head unit it sounds 10x better. With the truck turned off the head unit looks stock. It want attract theives. But when you turn it on and the lights go to flashing it looks down right sexy. The only problem was hooking it up. IDK if this is a titan problem or what but it was difficult to say the least installing this puppy. I had to take a razor and shave the edges off the brakets to make it fit. Also the wires were kind of confusing. But once the headache of installing it went away I was thrilled with this baby. If i would have payed 350 for this I still would have been thrilled. Im begging you. If your looking for a double din. Your search is over.
    Pros:
Looks stock when not on. Looks amazing when on. Sound Quality is unmatched by any head unit I have owned or heard.
    Cons:
    Needed painkillers after installing it.
