Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

Our take on the Infinity Primus P252

by Loren Barstow

The Infinity Primus P252's clean styling and dynamic performance make it a great addition to any home audio system. Use a pair of these speakers for stereo listening, and they'll create a large "sweet spot" — you'll enjoy warm sound throughout your entire room. Or make them a part of an Infinity Primus home theater setup for high-impact movie sound effects. Either way, you'll experience precise imaging and a wide soundstage.

The P252 owes its performance to Infinity's exclusive Metal Matrix Diaphragm™ speaker material. This material uses a stiff metal core to add rigidity to the drivers, for clear, accurate sound. Two 5-1/4" woofers dish out detailed lows and mids, and a 3/4" tweeter produces highs with sparkling clarity. And the speaker's high sensitivity means that you won't strain your amp when you crank up the volume.

Recommended center channel: Infinity Primus PC250.
Recommended surround speakers: Infinity Primus P152.

    Driver Technology

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels.

Woofers: The dual 5-1/4" M.M.D. cone woofers offer extremely accurate midrange response for cleaner, more realistic sound. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use rubber surrounds.

Tweeter: The speaker has a 3/4" M.M.D. dome tweeter that offers superior stiffness and damping compared to traditional metal domes.

Waveguide: The P252's tweeter utilizes an acoustical waveguide to deliver, more even high frequency response, no matter what part of the room you're in.

Crossover: The speaker features a 2-way crossover system with crossover frequency at 2500Hz. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope.

Matching System: The P252 is voice-matched to all the speakers in the Primus line, so a complete matching system can be built.

    Connections

5-Way Binding Posts: The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

    Mounting Options

Outboard/Inboard Feet: The speaker comes assembled with attractive silver outboard feet. If desired, you can replace them with the supplied, less visible, black inboard feet. The feet can be changed with the use of a handheld Phillips-head screwdriver. The overall width is approximately 15/16" less, and the overall height is approximately 1/4" less when the black, inboard feet are used, compared to the outboard feet.

    Infinity Primus P252

Written By Ronnie, Louisville, Kentucky on Wednesday, April 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thanks Crutchfield for another great product. I ordered on Friday afternoon and received them Monday afternoon. They realy suprised me on how much bass they put out for the size of the woofers. If you want the really deep bass for movies I would still recommend a sub. You cannot go wrong with these speakers no matter what you are using them for.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of, Good job Crutchfield for shipping my speakers on time as promised. These speakers replaced my primus 150 that i used for front speakers. These speakers completed my infinity home theather speaker setup. What a big difference having the p252's for the front. I'm hearing instruments that i haven't heard from my 150's. The sound coming out of these speakers is clean, nothing but pure sound for music and movies. Outstanding speakers.
    Pros:
    clean, pure sound
    Cons:
    none so far

Great speakers, def worth the money. I hooked these up to my standard Sony receiver (which is without all of the bells & whistles) with Monster THX 16 gauge speaker wire and I noticed a big difference in sound quality over the pair of Aiwa speakers I had. These are perfect for a home theater system in your bedroom.
    Pros:
Sound quality and they are sturdy.
    Cons:
    none

I bought these a few years ago to replace the small fronts that were in my Infinti surround system package. Great highs and mids complement the rest of the system. not perfect but can't beat them for the price.

    Infinity Primus P252

Written By Paul G., Newfield, NJ on Tuesday, July 26, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered 2 of the Infiniti Primus P252 speakers to "upgrade" my surround sound system. Previously, I used 2 old bookshelf speakers on either side of my center speaker. They just didn't "cut it." Now, the sound difference is amazing! I checked around and Crutchfield was the cheapest for these speakers. There was no shipping charge and I received them in only a couple of days! Now, when I watch Blueray movies, it's almost like being in a movie theater. What a great company and a great product! P.S. I even rerceived a personal thank you in the mail!

I went from Polk bookshelf (which i do love) to these since my new room is much bigger..they are awesome! the performance, sound and volume rock! Don't listen to the reviews that say they lack bass - because they don't, and you will most likely be using a SUB anyway..So these rock

    INCREDIBLE SOUND

Very clear, loud sound. Perfect for a home theater system. It's not simulated
Bose magic sound - this is the real deal! Gives a much better 3D effect to your
sound, especially when lower frequencies are involved. Highly recommended.

    NOT SORRY

Written By wa, USA on Sunday, December 26, 2010

I was hesitant to order speakers that I had never seen or heard, but based on reviews I
stepped out of my comfrot zone and order 2-252's and a PC250 for center sound. I am
not sorry that I did. They look great and sound great, It would be hard to find a better
    speaker for the price.

Winner of my own blind test.

Written By barakumba, Redmond WA on Friday, November 12, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My budget for fronts and center was about $500. After reading numerous tests and reviews I narrowed down the search to two other brands and the Infinity P252.

First I've bought one set but the sound was so flat and lifeless that I had to return them right away. Then I ordered another brand and was pleasantly surprised by them - unlike my old speakers they can easily project the center of the sound stage - it almost feels like there is a hidden center speaker and the voice is very clearly reproduced. The Infinities arrived one week later and I organized a small blind test with my wife and son (he is 10). All 3 of us picked the Infinities. The sound stage is wider, deeper and more detailed - it felt like there is more of everything in the sound.

Few days ago I received the matching PC350 center and it actually added even more life to the sound so I'm really happy with the purchase.

Good luck with your search for perfect speakers!

Nice slim, sleek design built solid .. for only having 2 5-1/4 inch woofers and a 3/4 inch tweeter... they are crisp and clear, what low bass these speakers do not pick up on my Infinity ps212 sub covers with no problems got these hooked up to 14guage wire with monster cable bananna plugs and im VERY happy with these speakers and im Proud to say i own a complete Infinity system powered by an Onkyo receiver.. I love Infinity and i hope this helps anyone intrested who is stuck between brands infinity cannot be beat for the money ide even say they out perform brands in similar style costing more.

    Big sound, Small price

Written By MichaelD, LaCrosse,WI on Sunday, October 05, 2008

I think a 2-way speaker system is a better way to go, than 3-way. unless you buy an expensive pair of three way speakers like my Polk Audio rti12s. with woffer type mindrange's. The Infinity Primus P252 speakers are outstanding, with room filling clearity I bought them because I loved my p250's so much. now I have a complet primus system(p252,p250,pc250,p150's)-7.1 in my 12x16 bedroom. and I have a sub, I don't think I need it but i had it so i use it. It sounds almost as good as my much more expensive polk audio system in my living Room. Michael D.

    p252

Written By jazzman007, Boston MA on Monday, April 28, 2008

For sterio music thare is little that is lacking in the frequincy range. These towers provide enough bass for any type of music except techno, and that is not music. these are a good value, eventhough thare are not alot of reviews for these speakers, just read the reviews about the p162 bookshelfs and you can get a good idea what these are about. No need for a subwoofer. The better the amp the better the sound, have used with H/K recever and will soon have hooked up to a Denon running a full digital signal from onkyo universal disc player running through optical. With the H/K all sounds clear as a bell with little coloration. worth a listen.
