Infinity

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Infinity Kappa 52.9i

by Kristen Schaub

Infinity built the latest Kappa speakers with improved technology and high-end materials to provide you with outstanding sound reproduction. The Kappa 52.9i 5-1/4" speakers feature light, but stiff woven glass-fiber woofer cones that won't flex or distort. The Plus One design offers a larger surface area for improved low-frequency output and efficiency, while longer voice coils produce tighter, snappier bass. Large magnets keep the woofers running cooler by placing more steel close to the voice coils to act as a heat sink.

Infinity uses the same Metal Matrix Diaphragm tweeter found in many of their popular home speakers, so you'll hear the music the way it was recorded with minimal coloration or distortion. The dome tweeters pivot, allowing you to adjust them for better stereo imaging.

The computer-optimized outboard crossover networks employ audiophile-grade components to separate highs and lows, so that the woofer and tweeter work together perfectly. Pre-wired crossovers eliminate a time-consuming step in your installation, and terminals at the end of the crossover wires screw directly to the speakers, leaving no chance for incorrect wiring.

Important Note: You should use an outboard amplifier to power these speakers.

Installation Note: These Infinity speakers do not include screws or speed clips. You may be able to use the factory screws to install them, but it's always a good idea to have an assortment of self-tapping screws (5/8" to 1") and speed-clips on hand.

Highlights:

  • 2-way 5-1/4" speakers (pair)
  • True Four Ohm Impedance technology: speaker's 2-ohm impedance combines with speaker wire impedance for a 4-ohm load
  • Plus One® woven-glass-fiber woofer cone with hi-roll rubber surround
  • 1" rotating UniPivot, edge-driven M.M.D.® dome tweeter
  • computer-optimized outboard crossover with tweeter level control
  • direct-connect crossover dongle
  • power range: 2-55 watts RMS (165 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 55-25,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 94 dB
  • top-mount depth: 2-3/16"
  • warranty: 3 years

    Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speakers use cones more surface area than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One design offers greater bass output and a significant increase in efficiency.

Woven Glass Fiber Woofer Cones: This woven-glass-fiber material is very light and extremely stiff, minimizing cone flex. This results in very low distortion and improved clarity.

Edge Driven MMD Dome Tweeters: Each speaker has an Edge-driven MMD (Metal Matrix Diaphragm) dome tweeter. The benefit is increased power handling and reduced distortion at high output. This technology also allows for better integration with the mid/woofer. The tweeter has an adjustable output level, +0 dB (flat) and -3 dB.

UniPivot Tweeter: The tweeter is angled and can be rotated about 270° after installation. This allows you to direct the tweeters toward the listeners, very useful for speakers mounted low in a door.

High-Output Design: The high output 2-ohm voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring and extracts every watt from factory receivers, increasing overall system output and efficiency (relative to 4 ohm speakers). The speaker's 2.0-ohm impedance combined with the impedance of your speaker wire provides a true 4-ohm load to your connected headunit or amplifier. The speakers also benefit from increased power when you upgrade the wire and add aftermarket amplifiers, designed to power a 2-ohm load.

Crossovers: Kappa speakers include computer-optimized, voice-matched crossovers, using audiophile quality air core inductors and polypropylene capacitors. The crossover slope is 12 dB/octave.

Crossover Connections: Each crossover is connected to the speaker by a 6" wire. The input terminals are set screws that will accept up to 10 gauge bare wire.

    Crossover Dimensions:

    • Length: 3-1/16"
    • Width: 1-1/4"
    • Height: 1-3/16"

    Great Infinity Speakers

Written By Brian, Florida on Friday, October 05, 2012
Installed in a 2006 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers went into the speaker bar on my Jeep Wrangler. It was a perfect fit and I had no problems at all. They sound great, a huge improvement over my stock speakers.
    Pros:
Easy fit. Great sound for their size
    Cons:
The grill covers look great, but didn't fit my speaker bar

    Not 100% satisfied... yet...

Written By AlexM, Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, September 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good - not stellar sound at this point. I'm still tweaking my EQ and may change the configuration of the door boxes that hold the speakers to get better mid and low range.
    Pros:
    Good sound; easy to install
    Cons:
Build quality. The tweeter is on a pivoting stalk coming from the center of the speaker - without any incidents (impact, particularly hard bumps) it broke! It was just hanging there by the wires rattling against the speaker cone! Crutchfield is sending me a replacement without any fuss (Awesomeness), hopefully it was just a one off issue and I'll never have to take the door panel off again!

    Great value and sound.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers. Pound for pound, these little guys pound out the sound. Ultimately, I will be adding a subwoofer to round out the very low end. In the meantime, these Kappas (paired to Kappa 682.9s in the rear) are a great install.

Be careful with the center-mounted tweeter while installing. Could break off very easy. Mount the crossovers with mounting tape and zip ties through the provided "mounting slot."
    Pros:
    Sound. Value.

Good product with crystal highs and mids no bass but not what I bought it for. The only reason I didnt rate it five was because when paired with the components it falls very short to comparison 55watts is just not enough power even with the amp Ive got them connected to, but still good product and I dont sit in the back anyways.

    2011 Kia Sorento

Written By Ken, PA on Friday, February 11, 2011
Installed in a 2011 KIA Sorento
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are great, and a HUGE improvement over the factory Kia speakers. I appreciate all types of music, so I'm fairly critical of weak highs or lows; I found neither with these. I replaced the front pair with these (52.9i), and replaced the rear pair with a set of Infinity Kappa 62.9i speakers. To be honest, I'm fairly certain I could have fit the 62.9i speakers in the front too, but I followed the fit guide here to be safe. Wiring harnesses aren't yet available for the 2011 Kia Sorento, so I had to cut and crimp every wire. However, I didn't drill out the rivets of the speaker mounts as directed. Following the advice of someone on kia-forums.com, I simply cut the old speaker and mounting arms out of the existing mount, and screwed the new speakers in place - with amazing results. I'm still using the factory head unit, to preserve the look, steering wheel controls, and Sirius setup. Worrying that it might be underpowered, I bought an amp too, but I won't be installing it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these speakers on my Victory XC. I am impressed with the sound and clarity. The bass is good to be on a motorcycle.
The install was easy, took about 40 minutes. With the IPod the sound is very impressive, with the fm it is still good just not as good as the IPod but you shouldn't expect it to be.
I will be adding the Kappa 62.9i on my Ultra real soon

    1997 Jeep Wrangler Sahara

Written By Mark, Saint Albans, WV on Sunday, December 26, 2010
Installed in a 1997 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a set of the 52.9i and 42.9i Infinity Kappa speakers for my 1997 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. The 42.9i's, using the free adapters, mounted in the lower front dash and the 52.9i's were placed in the sound bar with minimal effort. Everything that was needed to install the speakers was provided by Crutchfield.

After my son and I completed the installation, we turned on the Alpine CDA-9886 CD Receiver, purchased earlier from Crutchfield, and the sound was amazing! Crisp highs, outstanding mid-range and much improved lows could be heard through all volume levels as we cranked up the volume.

I am completely satisfied with the Crutchfield Advisor's recommendation of these speakers.

On another note, Crutchfield has one of the best customer service experiences I've had. I've been a customer for several years and have never been disappointed.

    Looking for Something Better

Written By PhotoArtsLA, North Hollywood, CA on Saturday, September 04, 2010

I got these speakers as a gift, installed them with a new Alpine head unit (for all the weak D/A, I want my iPod Touch in the car) in my Mercedes 450 SEL. Also installed matching speakers for the front, and the result... what ever happened to sonic quality? The world has devolved into sonic rubbish. Adding the sub would be pointless. I'd shudder to see whatever the curve is on these speakers. The hills and valleys of weaknesses. I know not only how things should sound, but using the most translatable speakers existent. I will be taking these things out and trashing, or selling them. Two stars because they did make noise.

    Outstanding sound! 2002 Jeep Wrangler

Written By Dan, Dunedin, FL on Tuesday, January 12, 2010

I installed these in the soundbar of my 2002 Jeep Wrangler and these are a big improvement over the 5-1/4 inch Pioneers that I replaced. Bass is notably better and the highs and mid-range sound light years better. The wweeter is angled and can be rotated to be directed toward the passengers which is a great feature. Overall I could not be happier with the sound these Infinitys put out. They are hooked to a Alpine receiver and I have Polk 4x6 (no amp to the Polks or Infinitys as they are powered by the receiver) in the dash and a 6" Rockford Fosgate amplified bass tube behind the rear seat. These aren't cheap for 5-1/4" speakers but they are well worth the $$. And I was able to use the Inifinity grill which looks cool mounted in the soundbar compared to stock.

    Infinity Kappa 52.9i

Written By Hassel, Aurora, Kentucky on Sunday, November 22, 2009

I love these speakers. they were a vast improvment over my stock speakers....i have an Cadillac CTS with the bose system and i wanted more out of it so i first added these to my back doors and there bigger brother components to the front and was amazed! on a 4 channel alpine off a alpine deck they sound nothing short of amazing! I am hearing suddle hints and decresendos in songs i never knew exhisted. They do have to be amped to get the full force, but they are great for the price. and paired up with the right amp will sound great in any car!

I replaced the factory speakers in the sound bar of my 2000 Jeep Wrangler. They are a huge improvement. Clear highs and even a little bass. They're attached to a Kenwood head unit and I get much more volume and alot clearer sound than I got from the factory speakers. I highly recommend the Infinity Kappa speakers.

    Great sound!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have these attached to a Sony Xplod head in my rear speaker pods. These blow the Xplod speakers that I had in there before out of the water so badly it's almost embarrassing. The deep ends have plenty of punch, midtones are clear, and high tones are great, but not too overbearing like with cheaper speakers. The efficiency of these speakers means you don't have to turn your volume up very high to hear them. The bass I get almost feels like I have a small subwoofer mounted in my car, but maybe it's the Polk 6 1/2s I paired with them. Either way, great speakers and I'd definitely recommend these to someone looking for a mid-range priced car speaker with a smaller size such as this.
