What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Pioneer TS-SW2501S4

by Dominic Devito

Pioneer offers a great way to get exceptional bass in tight quarters. These shallow-mount TS Series subs feature a low profile, so you can put them in extremely thin boxes. They'll fit easily behind most truck bench seats while thumping just as hard as conventional subs.

Pioneer's Air Suspension Control System locks in air between the main cone and the internal drive cone, causing it to act like a spring. This eliminates the need for a spider structure, reducing the depth of the sub without sacrificing sound quality. The result is punch that goes just about anywhere.

The TS-SW2501S4 10" shallow-mount sub presents a 4-ohm load and handles up to 300 watts RMS. Pioneer reinforces the injection-molded polypropylene cone with basalt and aramid fiber for rigidity and responsiveness. The 3-layer surround sandwiches a layer of fiber between two layers of urethane to keep your bass under control. Pair this sub with a special low-profile enclosure from Pioneer to get the most out of this slender powerhouse.

Highlights:

  • 10" 4-ohm shallow subwoofer
  • interlaced basalt and carbon reinforced IMPP cone
  • 3-layer urethane and fiber-woven radial surround
  • cast aluminum basket
  • Air Suspension Control System eliminates traditional spider structure

    Features

Shallow Mount Woofer: Pioneer's "Shallow-Mount" subwoofers are designed to provide wider installation options for a broad range of vehicles. They can be mounted behind or under the seats of many vehicles. Although they have a compact design, these woofers still deliver the same big-bass performance of a full-size subwoofer.

Double Cone: The subwoofer features an interlaced Basalt/Carbon Fiber reinforced IMPP (injection molded polypropylene) double-cone woofer. The volcanic-rock fibers create a cone that is lightweight, rigid, well damped, stable in temperature extremes, and more environmentally friendly.

Surround: The double cones use a dual three-layer, fiber-woven, "M"-shaped radial surround to attach to the basket and form the Air Suspension System. This design keeps the voice coil centered, even under high power, for clear and powerful bass.

Air Suspension System: Typical subwoofers use a spider to control the woofer cone's excursion. The Air Suspension System, formed by creating a sealed air space between the double cones, effectively replaces the spider, providing superior design and performance characteristics. It provides excellent linearity and clear bass with low distortion.

Voice Coil: The TS-SW2501S4 has a 3" aluminum, 6-layer long voice coil wound onto a Phenol Resin Coated Glass Cloth bobbin. This design higher efficiency and sensitivity than conventional designs to provide powerful, tight bass.

Magnet: The woofer has a high-power strontium magnet.

Basket: The woofer has a one-piece, die-cast aluminum basket. The basket utilizes its rigid spokes to hold the top and bottom sides of the motor structure securely, effectively minimizing any undesired output loss.

Pole Yoke Design: The woofer's vented and projected pole yoke design allows for better heat dissipation, increased power handling and greatly improved linearity during large excursions by expanding the magnetic field.

    Specifications

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Pioneer range from 0.35 to 0.7 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Pioneer is 0.45 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Pioneer range from 0.5 to 0.7 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Pioneer is 0.6 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. One 3" diameter x 11.5" long port should be used with the 0.6 or 0.7 cu/ft enclosure.

Single Reflex Bandpass Volume: The bandpass box sizes recommended by Pioneer range from 0.7 to 1.2 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Pioneer is 0.9 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. The 0.9 cu/ft enclosure should have a sealed chamber volume of 0.45 cu/ft and a vented chamber volume of 0.45 cu/ft. One 3" diameter x 7" long port should be used with a 0.9 cu/ft enclosure.

    Good Product for the money

Written By Chad k, Vacaville,ca on Wednesday, April 10, 2013

I got 2 of these for my 2002 silverado Extended cab truck. I had to use these due to my limited space under my rear seats. Overall they sound great and I have no complaints, however the only down fall is due to their small size and design they don't quite hit the low low bass. So I sometimes gotta play with my amp a little bit. Overall a great product.
    Pros:
    Good value, good overall sound
    Cons:
limited in the lower bass ranges

    Excellent sub!

Written By MattP, Athens, GA on Wednesday, January 19, 2011

I put this sub (plus a Sound Ordnance Bass Bunker Model BB10-T enclosure and a
Bazooka MGA1500 amp) in my '96 Acura Integra coupe. The system fits in my trunk
perfectly and takes up almost no space.

The sound of the subwoofer is pretty amazing. It puts out a ton of volume with relatively
little power, and it sounds tight and clear with all the music I tested it with (everything
from dubstep to Fleshgod Apocalypse, Tchaikovsky to Dimmu Borgir). It handles blazing
fast double bass drum with exceptional clarity, never farting out or sounding muddy, but it
doesn't sound thin either with bass heavy music. The sub is a little more expensive than
the competition, but the high efficiency and great sound quality really make it worth it.

I would rate it at 5 stars, but Pioneer makes the mounting diameter on this 9 5/16". This
is at least 1/16" bigger than just about every sub box on the market that I researched...
with the exception of Pioneer's own slim enclosure. Not cool, Pioneer. This isn't a big
problem if you are fabricating your own box, or handy with a Dremel, but it certainly is
annoying that Pioneer designed their subwoofer to be just large enough to not fit in the
    majority of enclosures.

    Big bass, small box

Written By mtucker, Escondido, CA. on Tuesday, June 30, 2009

I put this 10" Pioneer in my 2003 Tacoma double cab. There is very little room behind the rear seat so I needed an ultra shallow sub that could go in a very small box. I have been impressed by the amount of bass it makes.

Pioneer recommends a box with 0.45 ft^3 of volume and a minimum of 0.35 ft^3. The commercially made box I bought is 0.33 ft^3 (sealed). Close enough. I didn't find any other 10" subs that were designed to go into a box with this little volume. All other subs wanted at least 0.5 ft^3 or a lot more.

The Pioneer plays nice and deep. I am very happy to get good bass in that small of space. I started with about 130W and moved to a 400W amp. The Pioneer didn't need the extra power (it seems fairly efficient), but I was upgrading so I thought I would go with more power.

People are surprised when they get a back massage from the sub behind the seat. "What could fit back there and make that much bass?"
