Terk

Our take on the Terk HDTVi

by Steve Kindig

Terk's HDTVi solves the challenge of getting reliable TV reception with an indoor antenna. Most antennas are big and unwieldy and designed to be mounted outdoors or in a cramped attic. That option isn't practical if you live in an apartment or condo, or want to avoid the hassle of installing an antenna yourself.

Terk's HDTVi can pick up your local digital and analog channels, and will look great sitting next to your TV. It's tuned for optimum digital TV signal reception, with a high-gain design that utilizes log-periodic elements and dipoles for receiving both UHF and VHF broadcasts. The UHF antenna element can be positioned vertically or horizontally to aid reception.

Details:
  • receives digital and analog UHF/VHF TV signals (channels 2-69)
  • VHF/UHF band separator with 75-300 ohm matching transformer
  • pre-attached 66" coax cable
  • 13-3/8"W x 9-1/8"H x 16"D (41-1/2"H with dipoles extended)
  • warranty: 1 year

Terk HDTVi

Written By mar2jeter, Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, November 21, 2009

I live in the Las Vegas area about 10 minutes from the strip and I get about 25 channels with this nice indoor antenna. I get about 6 spanish channels , CBS , ABC , NBC, CW, FOX vegas My vegas PBS , Vegas channel , home shoppers network, RTV , 2 music channels and a few other stations. Quality is in 720p , 1080i, 1080p and some in 480p depending on the channel. It was very easy to install (Took me 5 minutes) and easy to scan on my Sharp HDTV with the air tuner. I finally got fed up with my cable company with them raising my prices and getting just basic cable channels so i decided to get this antenna and save myself $65 a month anyway. Thanks Crutchfield with the nice packaging. Great Job!!!

Great, especially for the price. Free TV!

I live near Raleigh, NC. This antenna works great with my Panasonic Viera Plasma TV. The HD looks as good as it does with my Blu-Ray player. I believe my TV's built in turner may help (no converter box needed).

Fine HD Antenna

Written By Bruce, Sacramento, CA on Monday, June 22, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed the Terk HDTVi over the weekend. Excellent results. Re-scanning the TV yielded 10 of 12 local DTV stations versus the four I received before with another "Digital" antenna. Picture is clear with only rare pixelation.

I'm in a single story frame house with three walls between the antenna and the outside world. We are fortunate that all our primary station transmitters are within 5 degrees of each other and about 26 miles away. Within those parameters, this is a pretty good deal at this price.

Using a Sony Bravia HDTV, this gives me great reception for digital. That is all that really matters with the change coming up! Get all the stations great! Very happy with it. This is the first Digital antenna I've owned and probably the last.

Great reception, awkward design

Written By Brian, Nashua NH on Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Reception is great. I get all the channels I expected to after looking them up on antennaweb. The only down side is that the design is unstable and a bit awkward. The cable comes out of the bottom of the antenna and doesn't stay securely in the small groove allowing the unit to easily fall over. I have it wedged next to a speaker for support. So- as for quality, does a great job on reception indoors. Design could be better, but as others have said, not a deal breaker.

MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Written By Eric, Portland, OR - 97202 on Friday, April 17, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had my doubts since I had read mixed reviews and I thought that this would be like any other indoor antenna.

Went from picking up a couple of HD stations to getting the entire range of what is listed on Antennaweb's site. Tried the one unit I purchase on all three TV's in the house and it worked great. Just ordered two more this morning.

For comparison, I live in a 3200 sq. ft., two-story house in SE Portland, OR near Cleveland HS. The house was built in 1914 and is lath and plaster throughout. Antennaweb states that the transmission towers are between 5 and 6 miles at a heading of 271-273 degrees of north from my house.

I live on the 3rd floor of a 4 floor appartment building and having this antenna does nothing for me. I made the cable longer so I could put it outside on my deck and does pick up a few channels, nothing too impressive though.

works great-little awkward

Written By deme38, Belen, NM on Tuesday, April 07, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought and connected this antena for a friend in Belen NM used with a panasonic viera TV (she does not have cable, she was using rabit ears). The antena hooked up easily, I ran the "scan digital only" from her panasonic menu and got all but one channel she wanted with no fuss. For that one channel, she needs to move the antenna.
The only down side is the antena is a bit unstable, but not to the point of it being a deal breaker.

Good performance from this antenna

Written By TED, Columbia, MO on Thursday, February 26, 2009

I used an inexpensive powered antenna with my "old technology" TV set, and thought a powered antenna would be needed for my new digital set. When none was readily available, I bought this Terk unit. My fears that it would not receive enough signal for good picture and sound quality were unjustified.
The manufacturer recommends the antenna be placed above the level of the television. I was forced to locate it on the entertainment center (about 30 inches in height) just behind the TV, but am getting good results nonetheless. I am no more than about 40 miles from most of the stations I receive.
Despite some criticisms I have read about this antenna having an awkward, top-heavy design, it works well on a flat, stable surface. The fins that attach to the upper part of the antenna base can be set either horizontally (wide) or vertically (tall). I found the vertical placement allows the least interference from movement near the television-probably not an issue if the antenna is elevated as the manufacturer specifies. I am very pleased with this product.

Terk HDTVi

Written By Michael, Arnold (St. Louis), MO on Thursday, January 22, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I live in a St. Louis suburb where almost all the stations are north of me. This small directional antenna works very well for me. I just point it north and all the local digital channels come in beautifully. I haven't tried it for the VHF analog channels since they will be going away soon. If you live in an area where the stations aren't all in the same general direction, then this may not be the best choice. But I'm very happy with mine.

Terk antenna fits the bill

Written By Joe, Takoma Park, MD on Monday, January 19, 2009

If need be, I'll go the distance and put in the necessary time (usually my greatest expense) and money to address my own technical needs. But
whenever there is a bona fide quick fix solution to a problem, I embrace it with every fiber of my lazy being. I'm glad to report that my Terk HDTV
Antenna qualifies as one of these solutions. Our family purchased a 40" LCD TV this past fall and don't keep a a television subscription. Our TV
viewing is mainly monitor based, usually VHS and DVD. But when our occasional broadcast viewing remained routinely poor with old school rabbit ears, we checked Crutchfield for a simple solution. Sure enough, they had one in the TERK HDTV Antenna. And while we live close in to DC, we were
concerned that having only a set-top aerial wouldn't be adequate, since our television is in the basement. Surprisingly, it works perfectly. Although
the base of the unit is too narrow to balance easily when the entire array is fully extended, it can be done. We receive all DC area stations clearly, both analog (for now), and digital signals. So, we're good to go, unless subscription television one day becomes mandatory!

HD Antenna

Written By Len, White Plains, NY on Friday, January 16, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We've purchased other Terk antennas, so I expected great things from this one. It does work well with the new digi box we purchased for our old analog TV set. When the signal is strong, the picture is very good. But it does flicker in/out on occasion, perhaps my fault, as we have limited space for the antenna. A longer lead-in cord would be better. I agree with a previous reviewer in that this unit is very unstable. The antenna's fans (on top) are heavy, and the base is small. Plus, the lead-in cord runs through the rubber base, which is not at all a good desgn; it should go through the rear stem, not the base. So it tips over very easily.

All in all, a good, not great product.

Average indoor antenna

Written By Heath, Denver, CO on Thursday, December 18, 2008

I can get all my local channels with this antenna. Sometimes I will be watching a show, and it pixels and has sound interruption, right on an important part. Especially on channel 7 which is ABC here in Denver. I end up having to put it on a chair. It is an eyesore and takes some getting use to being on the side on and in front of the TV. I am thinking about buying a Channel Master to put on the balcony.

Awesome Antenna!

I bought this antenna based on all the great reviews. I'm glad I did. I just got Directv and based on my location I receive Chicago local stations. I got the Terk to pick up South Bend locals too in HD. I'm located 25 miles from there and the antenna works great just sitting right next to my TV. I highly recommend it!

Terk HDTVi

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an impressive antenna and really brings in the signal. Once you get past the unusual look, you realize how good it works. Hooked up a new Panasonic TV right out of the box and the picture was pretty good. Hooked up the Terk antenna to the TV and the picture was stunning with weaker signals now coming in full strength. Don't know how it works, but it does.

If you're looking for a clear and sharp picture - this IS the antenna for you! Had used cheep $15 rabbit ears for a couple of years and by adding a few dollars and getting the HDTVi, I've significntly improved the reception and the clarity of my 32" analog Toshiba . Waiting for my gov's coupon for the converter box and than I'll get the full benefits of HDTV. Throw on top the great and so professional customer and support service of Crutchfiled's, you can't go wrong.

Terk antenna

Written By patricia, Allentown, PA on Sunday, May 11, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did not pick up any better signal than with my rabbit ears. Plus, the small base reduces stability of the unit, such that it toppled off my TV and the antenna bent leaving it less effective.

I am able to receive the following analog signals: 3, 6, 10, 12, 17, 29,35,48 57, 69
I can receive the following DTV with the digital converter: 3, 6, 10, 17, 35, 48, 51, 61, 65, 69
I was hoping to be able to pick up 12 (PBS) and 29 (FOX) with the Terk antenna, but was unable.

Good Antenna

Written By Danny, Chesterfield, VA on Tuesday, April 01, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this antenna to supplement my DishNetwork HD service and it works exceptionally well most of the time. I am very pleased with the purchase and do recommend it for its small size, ease of use, and value. With the exception of the ABC affiliate, I am able to get all the over the air Digital/HDTV signals available out of the Richmond area. The difficulty I have with the ABC affiliate is probably due to a weaker signal being transmitted. At times, I do have to adjust the direction where the UHF is pointed, and the signal strength of the FOX station varies at times. I may consider purchasing the amplified version of this antenna, but Crutchfield doesn't sell it, yet.
