Polk Audio

Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Polk Audio db6501

by Leigh Schoettinger

Good music becomes great when you hear it through Polk's db Series car speakers. Polk engineers use laser imaging to determine the ideal combination of speaker materials and design to eliminate distortion. The resulting technology produces speakers with smooth frequency response, sharp detail, and the ability to play music at high volumes without strain.

Polk's versatile db6501 component speaker system features 6-1/2" woofers made from a polymer/mica composite and durable rubber surrounds that won't fall apart under stress from heat, moisture, or time. Liquid-cooled 1" silk/polymer dome tweeters use powerful Neodymium magnets to deliver precise high-frequency reproduction, enveloping you in bright musical detail. You can surface- or flush-mount the tweeters with the included swivel-mount cups. Just aim the tweeters so they broadcast toward your ears, creating a powerful stereo image.

External crossovers direct the right frequencies to the tweeters and woofers to maximize their performance, and their housings let you hide all wiring for a clean, professional look. These speakers feature stainless steel mounting hardware and muscular ABS grilles that will add a stylish touch to your car's interior.

    Woofers

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Kapton Voice Coil Formers: The low-mass 2-Layer 1" Kapton Voice Coil formers are lightweight for high sound output. Kapton's high melting temperature ensures high power handling and excellent reliability.

Pole Plate Heat Sinks: The pole plate heat sinks promote better heat dissipation for superior power handling and reliability.

Mounting Ring: The supplied mounting ring has mounting holes for both 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" applications, including GM/Chrysler 6-3/4G, allowing the speaker to fit more vehicles. In most cases, the ring should be used to mount the speaker.

    Tweeters

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 1" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs.

Mounting: The supplied mounting cups allow you to surface- or flush-mount the tweeters. The tweeters swivel in the flush-mount housings, allowing you to adjust them for optimum imaging.

    Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

      Surface Mount Flush Mount
    Mounting Height 1.046" 0.364"
    Depth 0.825" (screw depth) 0.938"
    Frame Diameter 2.002" 2.297"
    Cutout Diameter   N/A 1.951"

    Crossovers

2-Way Crossovers: Each Butterworth outboard crossover features a 12dB/octave high-pass network for the tweeter and a 12dB/octave low-pass network for the woofer.

Tweeter Attenuation Switch: You can adjust the output of the tweeter to match a level appropriate to your vehicle or your system. On the end of crossover (opposite the terminals), the tweeter attenuation switch can be set to 0dB, -3dB, or +3dB.

Electronic Tweeter Protection Circuits: Each crossover has a built-in protection circuit that guards the tweeter against accidental damage from high power.

Crossover Connections: The crossover inputs and outputs are screw terminals. The crossover housing is vented, giving you a choice of hidden wire channels for easier, more professional-looking installs.

Mounting: There are two mounting holes in the base of each crossover.

    Crossover Dimensions: L=5.029", W=3.072", H=1.075"

Installed in a 2011 Honda Ridgeline
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked as expected. Sound is not as good as expected for price, but this is using stock wiring. Will be taking the door off again to run new wires.
    Pros:
    Solid build, good sized magnet
    Cons:
Higher price vs sound quality. Tweeters have a cheap look, but sound ok

    Not Bad

Written By Matt L, Coeur d' Alene, ID on Monday, March 11, 2013

Not too bad, they severely lack in bass though. I do have a sub for that, but it's kinda irritating. The tweeter are way too sharp in my opinion and need to be turned down at the crossover. They do sound clean and great on an amp.

    Pretty Good

Installed in a 2000 Pontiac Firebird
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second set I purchased but I haven't installed yet. This set (4 total) are heading into a 2000 TA. The first set I used to replace all 4 door speakers in an 08 Avalanche. I have them hooked up to an old school Lanzar 240s amp with the gain at about 75%. They are crisp and clear until you have the music way up - up at unsustainable listening levels. They handle the power and I had to turn the gain on the crossovers down for the tweeters because they are producing ear piercing highs. Bass is OK, could be better but for what they are - they are good enough. The sub takes care of the boom. No problems with speakers - been in the truck over a year and they get abused every day with the music up during my commute. Don't know how they will hold up as competition speakers but I guess I will find out once they get installed in the TA
    Pros:
Crisp and clear until way past RMS, handle lots of abuse
    Cons:
Ear piercing High's if you don't adjust the crossover properly.

    Nice until the tweeters died

Written By Lee3333, Queens, NY on Sunday, February 24, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these speakers in my show/race car 3 years ago, and they don't get used everyday. The engine is loud, so I did not notice that the tweeters were not working until a few months ago when I had the radio on while I was working on the car. Then I realized that both left and right tweeters were dead. I had some old component tweeters and I hooked them up for the time being. But I was disappointed that they did not last long.
    Pros:
    Sound good
    Cons:
    Tweeters didn't last

    Good while they last

Written By Anonymous, Holly Springs, NC on Monday, September 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have mixed feelings on these speakers. I have gone through 3 sets. I purchased them a couple of years back to install in my 06 Chrysler 300C. I am powering them with a D450.4 amp. I have 12" subs on 2 of the channels so really wasn't looking for these to produce a lot of bass. I ran them with the gain on the amp almost completely down. One of the woofers quit working and Crutchfield was outstanding. They sent me a replacement set so I could change the whole system or just the speaker that blew. A few months later another speaker blew again and once again Crutchfield was great. I thought they were blowing due to fault of my own. I run my system HARD. This time I adjusted the high pass filter on my amp and headunit to pretty much take out all of the bass going to the components. That worked good for a year and then out of no where, both of my tweeters quit working. What the world???? This happened just outside of my 1 year warranty so I am out of luck. I am going to replace them with 3.5 speakers. As much as I am trying to find fault in myself for running my system so hard, I am having a hard time doing that.
    Pros:
Good sound, easy installation. Great customer support from Crutchfield.
    Cons:
Reliability. Every component of the system has broke at one time or another with the exception of the crossovers.

Amazing when used what they are intended for!

Written By Nate, Salem, Or on Monday, September 10, 2012

There are a few things people need to realize. I have read reviews where people are not happy because there is little bass out put. These speakers are meant to be used for more of a mid-bass and highs, sound to ACCOMPANY a sub or subs. You wont get power bass out of these since they are not designed to do so. Other people say they sound terrible when run off of their head unit. They NEED to have an amp. Also, it is possible to damage speakers by UNDER powering them, as well as over powering. That all being said, I have two sets of these in my 93 4Runner in all four doors, powerd by an Alpine PDX 4.100 amp. I have run them for over 5 years now and they still sound amazing. Great mid-bass and clear crisp highs. I am also running one Kicker Comp VR 10" sub in a slotted box, powered by an Alpine PDX 1.600. This combination works wonderful for all music types, and is not overkill in any way. It was very reasonably priced for the quality. Sorry if this is a rant or too long, but people need to know things like this before spending money, then being upset or disappointed. These speakers are wonderful. I have been in the car audio business for over 18 years now, and these impressed me.
    Pros:
Everything is well done and sound great when properly powered.
    Cons:
    None

Written By Anonymous, Nashville, TN on Saturday, August 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced some Pioneer component speakers with these in the front doors of a '09 Accord. The Polk speakers cost $90 more, but you really get what you pay for. I'd recommend forking out the extra money if you really value sound quality. These speakers bring out every little nuance/detail from your music. I would not buy these speakers without buying an amp that provides adequate power. They need proper power to do them justice. I am running them through a Sound Ordnance M4100 amp and they sound amazing. Also would recommend installing Dynamat in the front door panels...it creates a great bass response. Before the Dynamat I had no bass.
    Pros:
    Awesome clarity/detail.
    Cons:
    None.

    Great Sound

Written By SilverGST, Mt. Vernon, AR on Tuesday, August 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers are / were an excellent addition to my stereo, I loved them. However, they didnt last very long, almost 2 years, then the speakers became soundless. First the left side went, then the right side. The speakers were more powerful than my stereo, so I know I didn't blow them out. Time to look for another mfgr for my next set of speakers.
    Pros:
    Excellent sound!!!!

    Cost, durability, warranty

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK, the first set was in my GF's 4Runner. It sounded so good I immediately ordered a set for my Wrangler JK. Actually made a more noticeable, remarkable difference in the Toyota, but that is likely due to the crappier existing speaks. Vocals, guitar, and hand claps in live recordings that I've never heard before!

    value clear highs separation, presence
    Cons:

    Fantastic Speaker when powered correctly

Written By RaulH, Clawson, Mi on Monday, July 09, 2012

I have these speakers coupled with an Alpine MRX-F30 amplifier and holy cow can they hit! Extremely clear vocals, bass is very tight and punchy, just what I expected. Now, I truly understand what good bass from a component speaker can sound like. Anyone saying these cannot produce bass does not have enough power to them. They Love power.
    Pros:
Outstanding speaker for the price, sound as good as speakers costing three times as much!
    Cons:
    None.

    Not too bad...

Written By Ron D, Yuba City, CA on Wednesday, June 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a bad set of components. The bass is completely missing, but the accuracy of mids and highs is much better than the stockers these speakers replace. I am hearing things that I've never heard before in my music. I strayed from my usual Infinity purchases to try these Polks, and while they aren't fantastic enough to do it again, I am not too disappointed.
    Pros:
SQ accuracy, adjustable crossovers (although I use 0db; -3db cuts too much out and +3db is too harsh)
    Cons:
    Serious lack of bass

    Quality issues apparent

Written By kaotik78, Manchester, NH on Friday, June 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased my first pair from Crutchfield and installed them in a 07 Subaru Impreza. They sounded great for a week then started to distort at any/all volume levels. Crutchfield was great in shipping a replacement set out to me, which did the trick. Unfortunately that only lasted for about a year and now they are exhibiting the same distortion and any/all volume levels. Two times is enough for me to look elsewhere. The quality isn't there. Tweeter screens come loose and fall off in extreme heat during the summer.
    Pros:
    Handles higher wattage.
    Cons:
Prone to failure, distortion, crackling. Tweeter grill's come loose in summer heat and fall off.

    Great speakers for the money
    Cons:
Not the problem with the speaker but I had to fabricate a bracket to be able to install the speakers. The bracket that Crutchfield supplied did not work. I gutted my factory speakers and mounted the bracket that Crutchfield sent to the factory bracket. In the end all worked great.

Great factory upgrade, ideal for most.

Written By Kaltenberg91, Wisconsin on Friday, May 25, 2012

Have owned these for a couple years and use them every day. They are a great upgrade from factory and give a rich clear sound. When used with a subwoofer at low to moderate volume they have a really balanced sound. After some time and occasions where I cranked them higher than normal listening volume they've began to show some wear. Still sounding great at normal volumes they begin to distort more rapidly than before as higher volumes are reached. Overall great speakers, and definitely cant complain with the price. Don't buy your gear anywhere besides Crutchfield, they give you everything needed to make installation quick n easy.
    Pros:
Very clear, crisp sounding speakers. Best you can buy for the cost.
    Cons:
Lacking bass (as far as 6.5" components can go) High volumes had shown "wear" on the speakers.

Polk Audio ..... only If you put them in the right spot

Written By Dan, NJ on Friday, April 27, 2012
Installed in a 2004 Toyota Highlander
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I got these and was a little surprised by the wait. They were very light but like mentioned in the other review do not let that fool you they are LOUD. However they are a little on the Scratchy side. I have these in the front and back powered with a Hifonics 4x100 rms channel amp. In the back they sound very crisp and clear and don't have the ear irritating Scratch. Though in the front they do have an annoying high pitch scratchy sound when vocals or really anything is played at high volume. I figured that the reason this was because the tweeter was closer to my ear then on the back. So If you get these make sure u put the tweeter pretty close to the mid.
    Pros:
pretty solid for the price and really loud.
    Cons:
could have more bass but whatever I have subs so it takes care of that. Much rather have gotten the DLS Ultimate UP6i but because of the buy one get one half of i went with these.

Polk Audio db6501's sound amazing !

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were just what my Tahoe needed. They went in the front doors very well. And with one good hole saw they went in the back doors as well. A huge increase in sound quality and imaging. They are run from an Alpine head unit with the Power-Pack added, a must for the price. I highly recommend them, they can handle power as well.
    Pros:
Great speakers ! The tweeters really sing the high's crystal clear.
