Polk Audio

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Polk Audio db691

by Leigh Schoettinger

Good music becomes great when you hear it through Polk's db Series car speakers. Polk engineers use laser imaging to determine the ideal combination of speaker materials and design to eliminate distortion. The resulting technology produces speakers with smooth frequency response, sharp detail, and the ability to play music at high volumes without strain.

Polk's db691 speakers feature 6"x9" woofers made from a polymer/mica composite and durable rubber surrounds that won't fall apart under stress from heat, moisture, or time. Liquid-cooled 1" silk/polymer dome tweeters use powerful Neodymium magnets to deliver precise high-frequency reproduction, enveloping you in bright musical detail. The 3/4" dome supertweeters add even more sparkle to reproduce your music's natural intricacies. The built-in two-way crossovers keep the high and low frequencies flowing to the proper drivers for seamless, efficient audio.

These db Series speakers feature stainless steel mounting hardware and muscular ABS grilles that will add a stylish touch to your car's interior.

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Kapton Voice Coil Former: The low-mass two-layer 25mm Kapton Voice Coil former is lightweight for high sound output. Kapton's high melting temperature (725°F) ensures high power handling and longer reliability.

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeter and Super Tweeter: The speakers feature 1" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters and 3/4" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite super-tweeters for clearer, more accurate mids and highs.

2-way Crossover Network: The built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.

Flat Spider: The speaker utilizes a flat spider for faster, longer excursion linear motion.

Pole Plate Heat Sink: The speaker's pole plate heat sink promotes better heat dissipation for superior power handling and reliability.

Woven Leads: The speaker features flexible woven leads sewn directly into the spider for greater reliability.

Basket: The speaker is housed in a solid, acoustically inert stamped steel basket finished in rustproof gun metal gray.

Grilles: Strong ABS plastic grilles are included. These computer optimized grilles are based on exclusive MOMO designs.

Great Speakers! must be Amplified!

Written By JMS, Pennsylvania on Monday, May 31, 2010

I read a bunch of reviews for these speakers, and found a lot of people saying no sound comes out of these, my stock speakers worked better than these, or something along those lines. Before I buy a speaker I always check out the the specifications and one thing I noticed about these was was their minimum power started at 10Wrms. Thats a very high starting point for speakers! I realized with this that meant even the best head units out there were only going to push out 14-18Wrms which means your barely going to be pushing these bad boys. Would you settle for a nightlight in every room of your house as all the light you had? Anyways I hooked the speakers up to Rockford Fosgate Punch P400.2 and WOW, what an amazing difference! They went from cranking the H.U. up just to hear them to turning them up halfway and now shaking my mirrors. Take it from me these are good speakers, you just have to get an amplifier.

A warm, rich sound - but lack some brilliance and clarity

Written By Beau, Nashville, TN on Wednesday, November 11, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have the Polk db 691 and db 651 coaxials driven by a Kicker Zx350.4 (60w x 4 ) amp. Now they sound a little better than my 8-year-old Kenwood 3-way 6 x 9"s, but my old Infinity Refenence 6.5"s sounded a lot brighter and more detailed... I bought these Polks because they should last a lot longer in the rear deck. UV rays and heat from the sun will deteriorate most speakers.( My old Infinity Reference 6 x 9" cones rotted away in 2 years time, but I should have covered them up with a towel or used a sun shade because that car sat in the driveway most of the time in direct sunlight.)
As for my front door speakers, I transfered my old Infinitys to my other car so I still enjoy them... The Polk db vocals sound pretty good and they can handle moderate power (60W RMS), but I know first hand that the Infinity Reference have a "brighter" sound instead of the "warmer" sound that Polk db's produce. I am not familiar with the Polk Audio components or the Mobile Monitors, but I think in the future I will try Infinity Kappas- they should have a little more clarity and brightness. These Polk db's suit me just fine for now, as I listen to a variety of music including hard rock. They aren't bad for the money, but if you are not really on a budget, buy a quality amplifier and go for the Polk Mobile Monitors or Infinity Kappas- especially if you are into instrumental, bluegrass, or classical music.

Bad Polk

Written By ChanHyuk, New York, NY on Tuesday, June 16, 2009
Installed in a 1995 Acura Legend LS
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The factory speakers on my Acura Legend were making buzzing noise so I thought it was time to change it. So, I bought set of Polk 6x9 and 6 1/2 to replace factory speakers which are paper base but it hits hard on the base which I like. But when I connected the Polk speakers, it was half as loud as the paper made speakers. I thought I connected the wires wrong but either way it sounded similar. I don't know how they do it but the engineers, they'll make gem out of rock I guess. Oh by the way, when I ordered these two pairs of Polks, the order didn't ship with any wires or wiring harness. None was included in the speaker box either. When I ordered the product online, it said it didn't require any extra harness. I ended up purchasing separate wires and a set of connectors to get the wires connected. I hate cutting and splicing original car speaker wires because I always end up loosing the original speaker plugs and it's messy with splicing on my own. I had to take apart the factory plug and get the wires out of the plugs without cutting the wires. Now, I am hesitant to swap the front speakers with 6 1/2 Polk because I'm going to loose all the base I enjoyed before. Right now I'm cranking up the volume much more to get the similar base effect. The sound detail is more clearer with Polk but from the rear speakers, you really want to hear the base. I'm thinking of trying out Infinity Kapa speakers soon.

Lot of BANG for the Buck

Written By Roger, Columbia SC on Monday, June 01, 2009
Installed in a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in the cockpit of my 23' boat and hooked them up to a 40 watt x 2 head unit and WOW. They sound great. Lots of base, mid, and high end tones. Really sound great without an additional amp or speakers. I will probably add an amp down the road to get the full benefit of these speakers. Have no concerns, they will provide what you are looking for!!

Sounded good while they lasted

Great sounding speakers but had one blow one month after the year warranty expired. I still have the stock stereo and no amplifier too. And to add insult to injury, they're only sold in pairs. Maybe I just got a lemon but they were great for short term listening enjoyment!

Polk Audio db691

Written By Kevin, San Jose, CA on Tuesday, October 14, 2008

I modified the back of my 89 crx to fit these, and i get lots of bass in that
small car. it satisfies me enough to hold off from purchasing a sub for a
while. they demand a lot of power, so an amplifier will be needed in most
cases, although my stereo (22 watts rms) holds it together quite well.
Decent bass, decent price, clear highs. Im very satisfied with my purchase.

Good, Versatile 6x9

Written By tower, USA on Thursday, June 19, 2008

One of the cleanest looking speakers in the entry-level bracket using a
gunmetal color cone and not over-the-top grilles. Produce decent sound at
low power (not so efficient if amplified considerably), especially if enclosed
in a box, allowing it to produce decent mids and dip into the lows. Its also
considered Marinized, making it an ideal speaker for installing in outdoor
vehicles that don't see extreme weather (golf carts, mules, etc). All-in-all, a
good performing, versatile speaker for the price.

This was my first time using Polk speakers. I will say it's my last. They have horrible mids and screachy highs. I feel like i'm listening to music inside a tin cup. I may upgrade to a higher quility Polk, but never would I suggest these speakers.

Nice and tight - excellent for my boat

Written By Douglas, Milwaukee WI on Wednesday, November 07, 2007

I purchased a pair of the 6x9 and 5 1/4" speakers to install in my vintage 1971 speedboat. Coupled with the infinity bass link and a Jensen head unit the system really rocks - hard! I have received a number of compliments on the sound system - for the sound and looks. Everyone likes the speakers - the grills are very nicely done - nothing overstated or cheesy with chrome. They have received a fair amount of splashed water and it hasn't damaged them. I wouldn't submerge them; however, they do prove to work well in a boat. I will be adding a pair of these to my 2007 Accord because the sound is amazing. On a boat the last thing you want is distortion at high volume to overcome the motor sound - these puppies really crank - loud and clear - and at lower volumes when we are tied up on a sand bar - look out you will get lots of people asking how did you get that to sound so good!!! It's fun - and the speakers are priced right!
