Could be better

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Initially installed this with my AVH-P8400BH, and immediately ordered a different brand (carries other products by this company, but not the dash kit...so left the name out). The trim ring provided with this kit was bowed due to being so thin, and when installed, still left substantial gaps around the chassis/face of the receiver. The mounting did not have any attach points back to the dash, so it depends on the dash pop-tabs for stability and security (unlike the 'other brand' that screws in to the factory dash mounts). The plastic mounting plates (that hold the receiver to the fascia) are flimsy, and the only things holding the receiver into position (vibration is a certainty). Pretty consistent to what I've read on other forums/sites. Gave it 1 star since it was included with my receiver purchase.

The 'other brand' is nearly a perfect mounting match. Was almost able to use the factory metal receiver mounts, but ended up using the plastic ones included with their kit. Seems to hold the receiver stable, and rock solid mounting to dash. Am happy with the new kit.
Pros:
Free
Cons:
Flimsy construction, lacks secure mounting to the vehicle dash, lacks secure mounting of receiver

Nissan Frontier Kit (Black)

Item fit well in place of stock dash kit. The trim around my stereo 'Alpine iDA-X3055' did not fit tight though and had gaps that I can see.
Cons:
Trim around head unit does not fit tight.

MOSTLY GOOD

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to install. Quality is pretty good.
Pros:
Easy to install.
Cons:
Quality is pretty good. Missing some of the slots that the oem part uses to attach to the dash, so there are some squeeks and rattles. The pocket below the reciever (single din) is a little warped or bowed. I plan to use a heat gun to bow it the opposite way and may do some hot gluing where it won't show.

Ok, but...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i'm pretty ambivalent about this kit, which came with am DD size JVC head unit from Crutchfield. The kit is simple, and I thought the plastic was thick and durable. Mounted fine in the original factory opening, and I had no issue remounting the HVAC controls back in the unit. I mounted my radio using the side plastic supports that came with this kit, and the radio is very firmly attached to the dash.

So, what's not to like. My issues were:

- The instructions really leave something to be desired. It goes through how you remove the factory radio from the original frame, but if you use the plastic brackets to support the new radio (which I think you have to... the brackets mount to the black trim using screw points that don't exist on this casting), then you don't need to take the original radio out of the original frame. - The texture of the plastic does not match the original - the original has a "weave" pattern to it, some say carbon fiber look. This is matte plastic. It matches the dash, something I worried about, but does not pop. - I'm stuck with a gap at the top and bottom of my radio where I can see into the dash when the sun is at my back. Not much, but enough to annoy me. Haven't figured out how to fix this one. The trim bezel for the radio won't work, since I'd have to had used the whole radio mounting ring, which from what I can tell won't fit in this casting.

I'm not disappointed enough to redo it, but wish there were a better option.
Pros:
Reasonably strong, everything fits (except as noted below), color matches original piece. No concern radio will fall out now that it's installed.
Cons:
Gap around radio is annoying, wish it was textured like the original. Concerned it'll show fingerprints like crazy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read the reviews on this dash kit before ordering my receiver and figured its free and if it doesn't work out I'll buy one of the other dash kits. Man was I pleasantly surprised! Everything went together real smooth and tight. Alignment was spot on, no complaints, and the thing is strong. I mounted a DD chassis in the unit. Yes, it is smooth and not textured like the OEM piece, but it looks great in my truck and I'm very meticulous when it comes to upgrades and mods on my Frontier.
Pros:
Strong Alignment is spot on Excellent color match to OEM black
Cons:
Not textured, but not a show stopper for me

Nissan Frontier Dash Install Kit

Written By RonT, S.E.Georgia on Wednesday, December 26, 2012

It works, but not very high quality. Let me start by giving kudos to Crutchfield as the first one I rec'd was defective (incomplete mold) and they replaced it for free and over-nighted the replacement. The unit itself is not much to brag about. It fit the dash poorly and I filled the gaps with black adhesive backed felt (I used it to line the storage box beneath the radio too). I also found the plastic clips that held the radio in place to be very weak and would allow the radio to shift forward. I disassembled the kit and riveted the plastic pieces together to stop the movement. If another choice of Install Kit were available, I would have chosen it.
Pros:
Holds radio in place.
Cons:
Looks cheap, fits poorly.

Good not great

Written By MIKE, Davis ca on Sunday, September 09, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything fit well except the trim ring for the DD unit. I was concerned about the fact that the unit would not mount to the metal like the factory one did but it is surprisingly secure in this mount. The wiring harness provided by Crutchfield has no ground (black wire says subaru only) the factory unit grounds by the attachments to the metal so you will need to run. A ground wire but the screws that are removed from the metal support will easily hold a ring terminal so it isn't that big of a deal.
Pros:
It fits and looks good minus the trim ring for head unit
Cons:
DD trim ring could fit better.

Metra Kit for 09 Nissan Frontier

Written By Don, Atlanta, GA on Saturday, July 14, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must admit I was pretty skeptical when I pulled this out of the box as it had a lot of plastic (and actually, the stereo is held in place with plastic brackets unlike the OEM stereo which uses metal brackets. I happy to say it is surprisingly sturdy. No squeaks or rattles although winter and colder weather may bring those out? Kit looks very good and fits perfectly.
Pros:
Easy to install, looks good
Cons:
Plastic brackets that hold stereo in place rather than metal

Fits but barely

Written By Anonymous, Clarksville, TN on Tuesday, July 10, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thin plastic, warped edges, no place for the factory supports. It did the job but barely, had to file back some of the button holes so them buttons could move freely, have gaps between the trim and the kit, and the single din storage pocket is bowed on all four sides. It went in, it holds my radio, but it screams cheap after market.
Pros:
It held the radio
Cons:
Had to cut to fit, improvise support brackets, and has a cheap/flimsy look and feel

Worked great

Written By Suzuki Equator 2011, NJ on Monday, May 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The front bezel fit into the factory dash easily. Was a little worried about the left and right sides as I could see a crack of light from the back. Once in place how ever it was perfect Did not show at all.

My truck only uses two of the three switch locations on the bottom portion that is just above the two knob holes. The reason I mention these is because I had to shave these around the edges a bit because depressing the switch would cause it to jam in the down position. I just scraped the edges of the switch hole with a knife, scrap mind not slice. After a few tries the hole was ok with the switch, after depressing it would spring back up.

I used a 1 din receiver and it had some play when using the sleeve that came with the radio. I solved this by wedging and gluing 2 nails onto the top of the sleeve that just happened to fit the gap perfectly. The bezel always hid the gap , I just didn't want the play.

Bezel is a matt black job, not as nice as the one that came with it , but servicable.
Pros:
Great fit Easy to install
Cons:
tight on the buttons causing them to stick Not as nice a finish as the factory bezel

Looks good.....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this with a single din receiver, using the lower pocket it included. It looks factory and matches up very well with the dash, but the pocket moves around a little on bumpy roads causing an annoying rattling and squeaking noise, other than that, it works and looks great.
Pros:
It fits well, looks good, easy to install.
Cons:
Some small gaps, pocket doesn't fit very snug, rattles and squeaks.

Trim a tab

Written By Nissan Truck, SC on Tuesday, October 18, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fits okay. Needed to trim two of the tabs of the bigger trim ring to make it fit around the cuddy box for a single din receiver. Also, needed to insert a piece of foam between the underside of the receiver and the top of the cuddy box to squelch a few rattles because the plastic has a lot of flex in it.
