Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P8400BH

by Ken Nail

Packed with features
Check out the features you'll find on Pioneer's DEH-P8400BH CD receiver — Bluetooth® for hands-free calling and audio streaming, an HD Radio™ tuner for the best in radio sound, and Pioneer's MIXTRAX for DJ-style audio and visual effects. When you add in iPod® controls and a great-looking variable-color display, you're looking at a receiver that'll bring safety, convenience, and superb sound to your car.

Pioneer DEH-P8400BH

Bluetooth for safety and convenience
Pioneer's DEH-P8400BH mutes the music when a call comes in and displays the incoming number or contact name. Just press a button and talk — no fumbling for your phone. The receiver stores your phone book if you like, so outgoing calls are easy too. If you've got music on your phone, use audio streaming to send it to the receiver, with no wires to get tangled up.

HD Radio for unparalleled radio sound
HD Radio's sonic advantages are impressive — FM broadcasts that are near-CD quality, with AM that's as good as what you're used to on FM. And if your local HD Radio station employs multicasting, this Pioneer allows you to tune into multiple channels on the same frequency, so you'll have more entertainment choices. Plus, the iTunes® tagging feature lets your save song info when your iPod's connected, so you can purchase the tracks you like later.

Pioneer for great sound
At the heart of this receiver, the built-in amp delivers plenty of power for strong sound. You'll also find an impressive collection of sound-shaping controls. Pioneer's Easy EQ 5-band equalizer lets you adjust the sound to your car's interior, while the Advanced Sound Retriever reverses the compression process to give you more high-frequency sparkle and musical detail from your digital audio files.

Play your music and streaming sources
The DEH-P8400BH plays all your CDs, including those with MP3 and WMA files burned onto them. Plug your iPod into the USB input, and you can use the Pioneer's controls to run the show. Once connected, the receiver bypasses your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its own high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with the highest fidelity possible. When you plug your iPhone® into the USB port, you'll be able to take charge of your Pandora® Internet radio stations from the receiver. And this Pioneer's 1-amp USB port will charge your devices in record time.

Choose colors to match your car and your taste
The bright dot-matrix display displays all system information clearly, and you can adjust the display and control colors of this receiver separately, with thousands of possible combinations on tap. The DEH-P8400BH will blend right in, whatever the color of your car's control surfaces and dials.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPhone® 5 Note: You'll need to update this Pioneer receiver to enable Bluetooth control and metadata display for the iPhone 5 or other Apple iOS6 devices. This update requires a laptop with Bluetooth running Windows 7.

Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX takes the music from your USB-connected iPod, iPhone, or other flash memory device and plays it back with added transitions and effects, creating a virtual DJ inside the DEH-P8400BH head unit (not compatible with iPod/App mode). Engine Time Alert: This setting allows you to measure the length of time that elapses from when the head unit is turned on and display the amount of elapsed time per set period (15 min., 30 min., or Off). There will also be an audible alarm. This function is handy if you are listening to the radio with the vehicle' ignition is in the accessory position, and the engine off.

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer on or off. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.

      HD Radio

HD Radio: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio or RDS FM broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

XM Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control Pioneer's GEX-P920XM XM tuner (130P920XM, sold separately).

Note: A subscription to XM, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming.

      Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The DEH-P8400BH is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0 (powered by Parrot) allowing to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. Bluetooth Technology is a short-range wireless radio connectivity technology that was developed as a cable replacement for mobile phones and other electronic devices. Bluetooth operates in 2.4 GHz frequency range and transmits voice and data at speeds up to 1 megabit per second.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

      • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
      • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Phone Pairing: Up to 5 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit. Only one device can be used at a time.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer DEH-P8400BH.

Hands-Free Communication: The DEH-P8400BH supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The DEH-P8400BH allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the DEH-P8400BH, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

      • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically (A-Z).
      • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.

External Microphone: During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the head unit's included external microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many aftermarket or factory radios. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip. The microphone measures 0.475" (diameter) x 1.445" (depth).

Note: The unit is not equipped with an integrated microphone. The external microphone must be installed for Bluetooth hands-free communication.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The DEH-P8400BH will be able to control basic playback features; such as Play, Pause, Stop, Previous track, and Next track. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Note: The Pioneer head unit requires an optional Bluetooth firmware update (HW05-SW01.27.20) to enable Bluetooth AVRCP control and metadata display for the iPhone 5 or other Apple iOS6 device. If you do not own an iPhone 5 or iOS6 device, there is no need to install this update.

iPod Display: The head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information, including - Track number, Folder number, Elapsed playing time, Song title, Artist name, and Album title.

Note: There is no music information displayed when this unit is set to 'App Mode'. Instead, all music information will be displayed on your iPod/iPhone's LCD screen. The head unit's LCD will only display the text - 'App Mode'.

Pandora App: The free Pandora App lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Pioneer DEH-P8400BH using your connected Apple iPhone, via the Pioneer CD-IU50/CD-IU51 iPod connector cable (sold separately) or the USB/iPod dock cable that came with your iPhone. Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-P8400BH is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player. AUX must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source.

2nd Auxiliary Input (optional): In addition to the front-panel minijack Aux input (AUX 1), you can connect a second auxiliary component by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector (AUX 2). The optional CD-RB10 (130CDRB10, sold separately) lets you connect an additional auxiliary component via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

      Disc Playback

Compatible Discs: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on, CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

AAC Decoding: This unit will playback AAC files with a bit rate of 16-320 kbps (encoded by iTunes) recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs.

Note: The AAC file (.m4a) must originate from iTunes. The AAC file must also not contain DRM protection. Not compatible with Apple Lossless.

WAV File Playback: The DEH-P8400BH offers playback of audio WAV files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs. The head unit supports 8-bit and 16-bit LPCM (Linear PCM) WAV files with a sampling frequency between 16 to 48 kHz.

File/Track Name List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD or connected USB device, so you can easily access your music. The Name List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Repeat & Random: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH offers Repeat (disc/track/folder) and Random (disc/folder) playback modes.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P8400BH is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P8400BH are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P8400BH are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Knob: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH features a 3-way rotary knob combined with a 4-way lever for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary knob and 4-way lever.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

Preset EQ: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH is equipped with seven EQ presets. You can choose from Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2.

Graphic EQ: The DEH-P8400BH's two Custom EQ modes (1 & 2) let you adjust the head unit's 5-band graphic EQ (100Hz, 315Hz, 1.25kHz, 3.15kHz, & 8kHz). You can adjust each band between +6 to -6.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (Gain: 0dB to +12dB).

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Three Pair of 4.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Crossovers: The DEH-P8400BH employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

      • High Pass: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
      • Low Pass: The subwoofer preamp output features an18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

Subwoofer Controls: The Pioneer DEH-P8400BH lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Rear Channel Speaker Output: You can choose to use the rear channel output (speaker and preout) for full-range speaker or subwoofer. If you select "subwoofer", you can connect a 4-ohm subwoofer directly to each rear speaker lead, or a 2-ohm subwoofer to one of the rear speaker leads, without using an external amplifier.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The DEH-P8400BH comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The mute button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90% (function that cannot be performed from the front panel). In addition, the remote provides answer/end phone controls for Bluetooth.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Good deck, wish it were smarter...

This is a good deck, but I wish it were smarter. I have to carry two bluetooth capable phones, which allows me to have my music on more than one device and require hands free for both. This deck does not make it easy to switch between the devices.

The menus are VERY clumsy and navigating them is annoying at best.
      Pros:
Bluetooth audio & hands free, price, 3 pre-outs, pandora controls
      Cons:
It's not very smart, MixTrack is useless to the average user.

      Feature rich head unit

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was looking for a head unit with clean look to it; this unit fit the bill. Works very well in my 02 Jeep Liberty. Wanted bluetooth for calls but have used it to stream music more than I ever planned. Installation was simple with Crutchfield provided wiring harness. Does a decent job of powering four Pioneer 4-way speakers. The Pioneer provided remote is very easy to use - even easier than using the head unit knobs and buttons.
      Pros:
Bluetooth for streaming and phone calls USB cable included Aux input Included remote
      Cons:
Takes some time getting used to the multitude of functions on the unit. The microphone for the phone calls could be better.

      Great Bang For The Buck!!

Written By Whitster, Rockwell, N.C. on Saturday, October 27, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is a Great Value!! Linking my Fiancee's new Samsung Galaxy S3 to this Pioneer head unit on "Phone Mode" was a Total Piece Of Cake!! We left the stock factory speakers in her 1999 Honda Accord, and it Sounds Great!! I guess that is testament both to the compatibility of the Pioneer DEH-P8400BH, as well as the quality of the speakers that Honda installed in this vehicle. The sound quality when talking on the phone is good, but not great. But, She Loves It!! Many "Brownie Points" scored there!! This is a Very Good "Bang For The Buck" Product, All Around!!
      Pros:
Price, compatibility with stock speakers, ease of linking "Android" style Samsung Galaxy S3 Phone with head unit.
      Cons:
Sound quality a little "Grainy" on "Phone Mode". Takes some time to learn your way around features, modes, etc.

      TOO Much Radio Static

Written By Anonymous, Douglassville, PA on Friday, October 19, 2012

Purchased this head unit for my birthday back in September, Sound quality is great! Very big improvement in quality of sound over stock head unit. I bought this radio for all the features available for the price (great deal i thought). I bought it knowing the USB port was on the rear so not thrilled about that but it had everything else i wanted. My Biggest complaint is the radio going back and fourth between analog and digital. Its all static. I even had my friend who is a certified installed check out the unit and even he can't get the static to go away. Maybe it has something to do with the digital tuner for HD radio, I don't know. Other then that I pretty satisfied with the unit. I would rate this unit higher if I could get good reception.
      Pros:
Great Sound over stock unit, Can dial in sound much better then with stock unit. iPod Controls, BT, and BT Audio is a pretty nice feature
      Cons:
      Rear USB port, Radio Antena

Wow what a dramatic upgrade from my stock headset and speakers. I installed the Pioneer DEH-P8400BH and some POLK DB speakers in my 07 Magnum and it is hard to get out of the car. The sound is great. I'm sure having digital HD radio helps but I honestly have not had so much pleasure listening to music in a car.
      Pros:
Nice features - Blue Tooth - HD Radio - Streaming Audio ipod or Pandora. Being able to change the color to match your car dash lights..
      Cons:
Would like to have had preset buttons instead of having to select tuning through the display. The clock could be a bit larger

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is very good. The bluetooth works great and was easy to set up and use. It has a lot of features for the prices, so it is a good value. This is the first after-market unit I've installed in a vehicle in a very long time and there are a few things I'm adjusting to. I'm not crazy about the "dial and lever" design for the controls. The volume knob doesn't stick out very far and it has a smooth surface so it is difficult to turn. It is easy to push, which changes it's function, while trying to adjust the volume. The clock is virtually unreadable when playing music. I could do with out all the twisty-bendy laser show in the display and make the clock easier to see. It doesn't have presets for the radio stations, so you have to scroll through to find the one you want.
      Pros:
      Great sound Bluetooth
      Cons:
Difficult controls Clock display too small

I added this head unit to my factory Monsoon system in a 1999 Pontiac Trans Am. I could not be happier! The adjustable illumination controls allow me to match the rest of my interior lighting. The bluetooth is easy to use and the install was simple and took less than an hour. I have yet to hear distortion and no more woofer slapping. The sound quality is impressive and the versatlity of the the unit is top notch. Love it and I recommend it to everyone I talk to.
      Pros:
Sound quality, ease of use, power, adjustabel illumination display
      Cons:
      None so far

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always used Pioneer from day one and this model is great. Bluetooth quality is excellent. The Ipod and USB functionality is also superb. My only complaints are below. These are somewhat minor, but if the stereo had these, I would give it 10 stars. First, it doesn't support voice dialing. Second, there is no front panel USB and this makes no sense to me. They do include an USB cable to connect to the rear, but why should you have to fumble around with a loose cable. Third, the instructions are all there, but it is confusing since another model is included. It is very difficult to tell when they switch instructions between the two models.
      Pros:
Display Bluetooth call quality Radio reception
      Cons:
Confusing instruction booklet no front panel USB no voice dialing

      Worth Every Penny!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We recently installed this into a Hummer H2 2003 model. Crutchfield hooked me up with everything and it worked Great!!

The tuner picks up ever Station!! I can pick up stations in Lousiana, and across Houston from Beaumont!! The sound quality is great! The Deck looks great and is super easy too use! The instructions aren't great but it's not hard too figure out! It's very easy, took me about 10 minutes too go through all features and tune them too my Hummer. Everyone here that says its hard too use is impatient and just a super hard critic. They could have put easier present locations but it's not a big deal! Infact I like the switch thing, it's different and unique. I use all the features and everything works flawless.

This is a must buy for the money. If you're on a budget I would go with this. I love it and you will too, guarantee! Crutchfield will help you install it of you get confused. Pioneer has yet too let me down yet! Way to work!
      Pros:
Looks cool, unique, ease to use, lots of features, cheap, pioneer, tuner, will come off If you want too hide it.
      Cons:
The presets aren't on the deck(you have too press like 2 buttons, so it's not a big deal), that is all

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a sailboat delivery captain, I spend a lot of time on the road. I wish this were easier to use. The lack of preset buttons, and difficult menu are a tough combination. The main reasons I bought this model were the bluetooth (which works well) and the HD / RDS which are very difficult to access. The manual is not clear, and I have trouble getting to the features I want to use (for example, tuning to HD2 is really hard to get to when driving down the road). I have only had it a month, but have put 7000 miles on my van with it, and have yet to find the logic in the controls. The sound it good, but getting to the features is somewhat difficult.
      Pros:
Good sound, really like the ability to turn off the display to make the dash dark at night... hands free calling works well.
      Cons:
IMHO, very difficult controls. Hard to tune, much like a radio with only a search function... lack of preset buttons for the tuner, and difficult getting to the HD channels make these features less then useful. Also have a hard time using the RDS

Overall, I'm very happy with the product. The sound quality is awesome. The tuner's sensitivity is great - picking up even the weakest signals. I read some reviews that complained about operation of the radio but it seems intuitive to me. I like the ability to change display color settings to match the interior lighting. The Bluetooth audio streaming and phone support works really well and setup was easy...just pair up the phone and you're off and running. Installation was easy considering that I bought the GM wiring harness and mounting kit. The only installation issues I had were related to a faulty GM harness and the Crutchfield support guys were very helpful with that. Overall the radio is a great value.
      Pros:
Sound quality, sensitive tuner, intuitive operation and great Bluetooth support. Reasonable cost!
      Cons:
The only criticism I have at this point is that the surface of the display is very shiny which allows for a lot of glare making the display difficult to see on sunny days. I haven't experimented with the contrast settings yet but hopefully that will help.

Great head unit with all the features. Made my factory speakers sound better than ever with the high pass filter. More controls than I know how to use for my amp and subs.
      Pros:
High pass and low pass filters, blue tooth, pandora control, USB charging.
      Cons:
Can't change the volume with out backing out of other controls.

      Great Stereo, Great Price

Great Sounding Stereo. Replaced Factory HU and couldn't imagine my car stereo sounding so good. iPhone support is great. Bluetooth Audio and Phone support works amazingly well.

Only two things that I have a real gripe about so far. I've had the unit installed for about 3 weeks now. Text on the display is kind of small to read while driving. Also, if the last device to play was a USB device (like my iPhone), then you jump in the car later and just want to listen to stereo, the unit will not power on until I plug my phone in or hold the Source button for about 20 seconds.
      Pros:
Sounds Great! USB Rear plug Comes with Bluetooth and hands free mic iOS sync is spot on
      Cons:
Display text a little small and some colors not easily seen Can take a while to switch from USB to another source if last USB device is not attached. Switching sources - you have to cycle through all the sources. Can't go backward.

Great sound, display is hard to see, and unit is not user friendly. The maual is complicated and hard to understand.
      Pros:
Great sound, good features such as USB and Bluetooth.
      Cons:
Display is hard to see, and the manual is very confusing.

      Pioneer DEH-P8400BH

Written By RichM, Wilkes Barre, PA on Thursday, July 05, 2012
Installed in a 2007 Hyundai Tucson
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Still working through some issues with this thing but my bottom line on this unit is that it is an "adequate" replacement for the stock CD/AM/FM unit that came with my 2007 Hyundai Tucson. The "human interface" for this unit seems to have been designed with manufacturer economy of parts in mind rather than the end user trying to operate it while traveling 70 mph down the interstate. Sound quality with stock Hyundai speakers is OK. Don't even bother with the crappy apps for your iPod (total waste of time). Odd faceplate shape makes it difficult to remove if you install trim from the mounting kit. NOT a good fit for the the 2007 Hyundai Tucson. Knowing what I know now I would never have purchased this unit.
      Pros:
I can listen to radio stations and my ipod
      Cons:
User interface not suitable for operation while vehicle is in motion. Trying to go through menu items while driving is not a good idea. Sound quality with stock Hyundai speakers is not good. Fit with provided mounting kit from Crutchfield fine, but trim just does not work well with this unit. The Apps just are a waste of time. Use the stock music player on ipod/iphone. iPod/iPhone control from head unit is next to useless. Would be nice to have access to playlists. Use "app mode" intead.

      MAKE THE CLOCK READABLE !!

Written By GS, Washington, DC on Monday, June 18, 2012
Installed in a 2003 Mazda Protege
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a really good radio, really good sound, takes a while to learn to use and tricky to make sure you are pressing the know instead of turning it for some of the functions.

two issues: 1) when the radio is not playing the clock readout is big, in the center of the display and easily readable. When music is playing it is not and if like me you want to know what time is it while driving you will be left very annoyed. 2) that weird background display shape spinning stuff which Pioneer pitches as a plus it not for me or anyone I know and I wish they would get rid of it to make the clock display bigger.

beyond that it's a great radio and I am very happy with it
      Pros:
music sounds great - bluetooth phone calls work great with built-in microphone - "AppMode" didnt make sense to me at first until I really figured out how to use it and what it adds but now I really like it for Pandora - music over USB and bluetooth both work great too - installed very easily - HF radio sounds nice too but I rarely have a reason to listen to it
      Cons:
time display size when music is playing is unreadable from drivers seat - sort of complicated to operate in terms of number of operations and ease of doing the wrong thing to the controls (turn/push instead of push/turn etc) - I wish the USB was in the front - would be nice if there was a button for each channel in a preset bank instead of having to scroll back and forth across all the channels - mixtrax display adds no value at all did i mention the size of the clock display?
