Our take on the Channel Master 2016

by Steve Kindig

Channel Master's 2016 antenna receives digital and analog over-the-air TV signals in the UHF and high-VHF bands. (Nearly all digital TV broadcasts are in the UHF or high-VHF bands — channels 7-69.) The 2016's space-efficient design is suitable for roof and attic installations.

The 2016 is a "directional" antenna design, which means it will provide the best results when most or all of the desired stations are transmitting from the same location. If you'd like to pull in signals from different areas, consider adding a rotor to aim your antenna in the right direction.

The 2016 is classified as a Medium-sized Directional antenna, with maximum range of 35 miles. For tips on selecting an antenna, and links to websites that help you locate HDTV signals in your area, check out our article on choosing and installing an antenna for HDTV.

Highlights:

  • receives digital & analog UHF and high-band VHF TV signals
  • range is 35 miles for both UHF (ch. 14-69) and high-band VHF (ch. 7-13)
  • 47"W x 22"H x 36-1/2"D
  • 34" turning radius (if used with an antenna rotor)
  • 75-ohm output for coaxial cable
  • can accommodate 1-1/4"-1-1/2" mast (not included)
  • warranty: 3 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee
  • RG-6 cable is recommended

    Features

Overview: The Channel Master CM-2016 is a compact outdoor TV antenna that is engineered to receive high quality UHF/VHF frequencies (both digital and analog).

Mounting: It can be mounted on a roof, on a wall, or in an attic. The saddle bracket, cross-arm bracket, and U-bolt are used to mount the antenna to the mast.

Turning Radius: If using a rotor on the antenna mast, make sure a 34" turning radius around the antenna is clear of obstruction.

Connections: The included transformer is connected to the antenna tap-off points using the included wing nuts. The other end of the transformer has a female F-type connector. The included waterproof rubber weather boot should be installed over the cable connection to guard against corrosion.

Note: Coax cable is not provided, RG-6 is recommended.

Grounding: The antenna and mast should be properly grounded. Grounding provides lightning protection for the antenna and your TV set.

Note: No grounding hardware is provided with the antenna.

Operating Range: All distances are approximate, actual performance depends on too many variables to predict accurately.

    • UHF Channels (14-69): 60 miles
    • VHF Channels (7-13): 45 miles

Note: For low band channels 2 to 6, an oversized antenna will be needed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great, beats paying 120 a month for basic dish. recieving 22 channels out of reno 30 miles line of sight pefrect picture quality. only gripe is that shipping sucked. package arived on time but it seemed UPS was i a hurry as it appeared they through the box into my yard over the fence like it was a news paper, box was torn and completely open. some how all pieces were still in box and the antenna - which was laing on ground outside of box when i got home - was undamaged. easy to set up and install. knock off the old directv dish and mounted and used cable for dish. aimed at source and programmed chanels - simple
    Pros:
    Easy set up, good price,
    Cons:
    shipping

Channel Master 2016 Outdoor or Attic

Written By Eric, Sacramento, CA on Friday, May 20, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a Telecom Engineer, I installed several of these 2016 antennas outdoors at work. They are small enough for most attics; and I installed one in the attic at home. The TV stations are on one tower in Sacramento, roughly 20 miles away so the signal level is pegged at 100 on most TVs with up to 100' of RG-6 coaxial cable. The beamwidth is a bit wide to capture signals from towers within a relatively close angle. Only once did I run into a situation where a narrower beamwidth would have been nice. Reflections from a nearby object caused periodic pixelizing in the TV. Adjusting the antenna height a bit; adjusting the direction of the antenna slightly off-path; and relocating the antenna a few feet solved that issue. The short wires on the balun (the balun converts from two-wire dipole at the antenna to the coax feed) make the balun a bit difficult to install on the antenna; and this could be improved. Otherwise, this is a very good, durable and relatively inexpensive high performance antenna.

    Experience

Written By Peter, San Diego on Friday, January 08, 2010

As an early adopter of HD in San Diego in 2000, 2001, I bought two of these, pointed them in opposite directions, separated them vertically by 1/4 wavelenght ( about 18") stuck in an FM filter, and got beautiful HD signals from Mt. San Miguel to the ESE and from Soledad Mt NW, as well as everything from LA, 110 miles to the NW from Mt. Wilson. They are still up and running. They also pulled in Tijuana, about 40 degrees south, with no problem. They are very un-fussy about wiring; my first tests had everything hooked up with alligator clips!

    I highly recommend these.
