Polk Audio

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Polk Audio DXi 650s

by Jo Greene

Go ahead, circle the parking lot till your favorite song is over. Polk Audio's DXi Series speakers will make you want to hit "repeat" so you can hear it all over again. Polk uses a high-tech approach and ideal materials to give your tunes an exciting new edge.

Precision woofers showcase your music
The DXi 650s speakers feature 6-1/2" polymer/mica composite cones that are lightweight and stiff, so they can create a big sound with minimal distortion. Polk analyzes their drivers in motion to ensure that cone movement is even and precise. Polk also uses laser imaging to craft woofer cones that are perfectly balanced to resist distortion-causing resonances. These speakers also fit in many 6-3/4" openings and, since the frame's less than 2" deep, you can install them in many space-challenged vehicles.

Silk/polymer dome tweeters broadcast sweet sound
Rest assured, you'll hear every detail of your most enthralling musical moments. Each 3/4" silk/polymer dome tweeter brings out the high-frequency highlights in your music, and a proprietary magnetic liquid cools each tweeter so you'll get clear sound and excellent long-term performance. From an intensely quiet acoustic pluck to the most exhilarating electric solo, it'll be a very entertaining ride.

Highlights:

  • shallow-mount 6-1/2" 2-way car speakers — also fit 6-3/4" locations

    Features

High Efficiency Design: The Polk Audio DXi Series speakers feature a high efficiency design so less amplifier power is needed for more audio output, meaning better sound and more volume using less power.

Dynamic Balance Driver Technology: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Klippel Optimized Components: For a driver to reproduce complex sounds accurately, the cone must move in exactly the same distance and manner in both directions of travel. The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Polk optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Composite Cones: Each Polk DXi650s speaker features a Dynamic Balance, polymer/mica composite cone woofer. These composite cones feature tremendous stiffness-to mass ratio. Lower mass means faster transients and finer detail.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the speaker uses butyl rubber surrounds.

Silk Dome Tweeters: Each Polk DXi650s speaker features a 3/4" silk dome tweeter for clearer, more accurate highs. Each tweeter employs a light-weight neodymium magnet for higher efficiency.

2-way Crossover Network: The built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.

    Polk Audio DXi 650s

Written By xerobane, Tulsa, OK on Saturday, April 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put a pair of these in as my door speakers coupled with a pair or Alpine SPS-610's in the rear deck and an Infinity Basslink in the trunk. These Polk Audios and the Alpines compliment each other PERFECTLY. I use an inexpensive Pioneer deck and a Kenwood 1000w 4ch amp. The sound from these Polks is absolutely amazing. Sure, they aren't competition-level speakers but if you just want to listen to your music at volume, these are perfect and produce near flawless mid-to-hi range sound. The Alpines will take care of the low-to-mid ranges for you. These FAR exceeded my expectations for a pair of speakers at this price and installation was so, so easy. An added bonus is they are beautiful looking speakers. Of course as with 99% of speakers, you won't see them once they are installed but when you first unbox them they are just pretty. And they have separate capacitors and crossovers which I had personally never seen in any non-competition speakers before. I also expected a little bit of rattle or vibration at high volume but they come with rubber rings that go between the speaker and the bracket to prevent this from happening.

If you just want or need something as an improvement over your stock speakers, these are a great choice, especially if you run them off of an amplifier...and don't want/need to spend $200 on a pair of speakers.

Bought these speakers to replace the cheap factory sound bar speakers, improved the sound 100%. Jeep owners, to get the best sound from these speakers, poly fill/stuff the sound bar.
    Pros:
    Great sound

Not much bass, that's what a sub is for.

    Good speakers

Written By Scott, Plano, TX on Friday, April 05, 2013
Installed in a 2002 GMC Yukon
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in the front doors of a 2002 Yukon. Attached nicely with the plastic insert provided by Crutchfield. These replaced the stock paper speakers and component tweeters. I disconnected the stock tweeters and just run these. Sound is crisp and clear. Mids and highs are nice but hardly any bass which is ok because I'm getting the bass from the rear speakers.
    Pros:
    Crisp clear mids and highs.
    Cons:
    Bass response is minimal.

These speakers look small but sound big. They are light on the bass but I expected this. I believe them to be constructed of quallity material and are sure to last a long time.
    Pros:
Great sounding speakers that are sure to last me a long time.
    Cons:
Little light on the Bass but I expected that.

    Polk Audio DXi 650s

Written By TonyC, Ohio on Saturday, March 30, 2013
    Installed in a 1996 Saturn SL1
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Alright, I will start with bad first. Unlike Polk's similarly priced DB series these speakers' tweeters can not be tilted. The other bad thing is Polk's sensitivity rating seems a little overly optimistic to say the least, and almost dubious. These speakers require noticeable higher power than stock speakers. So, if you are not planning on powering these with an amplifier (highly unrecommended) than be sure to have a head unit that provides a lot of power. Now, to the good parts. Tied for best aspect of these speakers is sound quality and power handling. These speakers provide a great full range sound (once you tweak the equalizer settings). Power handling, I am currently using a regular aftermarket head unit to power these speakers (not recommended) and they sound better at 75% volume than they do at 25% volume. Also, these speakers provide a "decent" amount of bass (for what they are) some might be able to get away without a separate subwoofer; but I highly unrecommend it. As much as Crutchfield goes on about buying good speakers first, I strongly feel if your stock speakers aren't physically broke (torn foam, ect.); then the best thing you can do for your sonic enjoyment is to add a subwoofer. Note: If you are putting these speakers in an Saturn S-Series; I found it easier to install the brackets into the car first then the speakers; because the speakers sit literally on top of the screws holding the bracket to the car. Also, don't be afraidd to buy scratch and dent.
    Pros:
*Sound quality *Power handling *Build quality *Cructchfield
    Cons:
*Tweeters can not be tilted *Polk's sensitivity rating is dubious

I can't beleive how crisp they sound. They have great mid's and highs and the sound is crystal clear. I replaced the front speakers on my Chevy Silverado and because they sound so good I'm replacing the rears speakers as well.

    Very clear sound.
    Cons:
    Could have better bass.

    Great speaker for the price

Written By Kevin H, Denver, CO on Wednesday, March 27, 2013
Installed in a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 4 of these to replace some factory front and rear door speakers in my 2002 Tahoe that were pretty shot. First off, installation was a breeze. The highs and mids sound great but I was a little disappointed with the bass. I don't expect ridiculous amounts of bass from a set of 6 1/2" door speakers (that's what a sub is for), but I expect better sound from them in the frequency range between my subwoofer and my mids and highs. I've installed systems in 8 different personal vehicles over the years and have yet to find a 6 1/2" speaker that meets my expectations for bass response, so that's why I stil rated 4 stars. It's as good as, if not better than most of the speakers I've installed, and the price is affordable. Some day I might have to try splurging on a $200 - $400 set of component speakers to see if they meet my expectations.
    Pros:
    - Great price - Significant imrovement over stock speakers
    Cons:
    - Bass response did not meet my expectations

A great replacement for stock speakers

Written By R. M. Acton, Greenfield, MA on Monday, March 25, 2013
Installed in a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The stock speakers in my 1998 New Beetle had met the end of their life. Bought these (on sale!), installation was straightforward, and they sound great. I was initially intimidated by having to drill out the rivets holding in the stock speakers, but it wasn't hard at all. The new ones fit beautifully, thanks to the included adapter ring, and overall I'm pleased.
    Pros:
Bass is nice and punchy, tweeter is sharp. I realize they're not the fanciest speakers, but they sound a million times better than my worn out stock speakers.

    Installed in a 2006 Subaru Impreza 2.5i
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality of these speakers for mids and highs is excellent. I would agree with others that they definitely lack bass but if you look at the specs that shouldn't be a surprise. In my opinion, these definitely need power. I wouldn't run them off a head unit alone, especially on a stock radio. I installed these a couple days before I put in my amp and subs and they sounded ok. This weekend I started running about 50 RMS to them with the x-over set to 70 Htz. The difference was night and day. With power you can crank these things with no distortion. I got these when they were on sale and dollar for dollar they are the best pair of speakers I've owned.
    Pros:
    crystal clear sound
    Cons:
    lack of bass response

    Upgraded

Written By Nowg, Tucson, AZ on Sunday, March 24, 2013
Installed in a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to upgrade the factory speakers in my '06 Cobalt which had begun to crackle and wear out. This is the first stage in my eventual total audio upgrade. I'm still using the factory stereo. The speakers are hooked up directly to the factory stereo without any amplification. There was a very obvious quality increase over the factory speakers. I'm getting a very clean, crisp sound. Crutchfield provided a complete instruction set which included pictures. The instructions were easy to follow and outlined literally every step necessary to complete the task. Whereas other instruction sets might say to remove the door panel, these tell you specifically where each screw and fastener is located and how best to access them. Additionally, Crutchfield provided factory wiring harness adapters as well as adapter plates for making a clean and custom installation. Those items came free of charge and made the installation considerably easier--no cutting or splicing required. This is less of a review of the speakers and more of a review of Crutchfield itself. The speakers fit and sould amazing. The technical support and additional parts and information provided free of charge by Crutchfield makes it foolish to go anywhere else. This level of service simply doesn't exist anywhere else, in any field, let alone car audio.
    Pros:
Shallow profile fits my car door perfectly. Wiring harness and adapter plate included by Crutchfield made the installation super easy and reversible, should I decide to remove the upgrades. Provide a very clear and crisp sound. Definitely a quality product for the price.
    Cons:
Even if I'm trying to be picky, I can't find one. Maybe it'd be nicer if the mounting holes on the speaker were radially symmetical. Hahaha!

Installed in a 2002 Dodge Intrepid
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are golden with high and mid range audio! I was hoping the low end would at least be on par with the factory speakers I took out. Not even close. There is very little audio below 50hz no matter the volume. At 50hz about -15db. At 75hz about -5db. These readings are taken from inside my Dodge Intrepid. Maybe in a ported or sealed enclosure they might be better but I can't hide my dissapointment in low end performance. I now have to rely on my 6x9s in back for anything below 80hz.
    Pros:
Extreamly good high and mid range performance.
    Cons:
    No bottom.

Replaced my stock Bose door speakers with these. The stock Bose were great until I replaced the head unit. No more distortion at loud volumes. I have a subwoofer in my setup so didn't buy these for the bass. They sound clear and I'm pleased.
    Pros:
    Loud and clear!
    Cons:
None, but these don't really seem like a solution for you if you want more bass - depending on the application though. Buy a subwoofer if you need that.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these on sale to replace the blown factory Infinitys. Great mids and highs, a little kick in the bass, but the mid lows and lows are weak. Installed with a Kenwood Excelon HU, so there's room to expand to a sub later to make up for it. Overall really good speakers.
    Pros:
On sale. Quick and easy install thanks to Crutchfield support and factory wiring diagrams.
    Cons:
Low freq is lacking depth under about 120hz. Still good overall sound.
