Grado

Our take on the Grado SR80i

by Dave Bar

Grado sound for a song

Want warm, balanced, natural sound that can transport you straight to the heart of your music — without breaking the bank? Look no further. Grado's SR80i headphones are an affordable introduction to what high-end audio is all about. You'll experience powerful dynamics, and the kind of focus and sonic detail you'd expect from much more expensive 'phones. They can be easily driven with a portable music player or laptop, and include a 1/4" adapter plug so you can enjoy 'em on your home system, too.

Born in Brooklyn and built to perform

Each pair of SR80i headphones is still made right in Brooklyn, New York where the Grado family has been building award-winning audio gear for almost 60 years. Like all Grado headphones, the SR80i uses a vented "open-air" earcup design with large, non-resonant air chambers for powerful, extended bass response and a more open, spacious sound. The diaphragms in each SR80i driver have been put through a special "de-stressing" process that allows them to deliver more music detail for an even larger soundstage. The drivers are also carefully matched to within 0.1 dB for enhanced stereo imaging. Plus, Grado gave these 'phones a stout four-conductor connecting cable for enhanced signal flow and bass control.

From the review Grado SR80i Headphones: Striking the balance between music and ambience

"The standout point for me was the wearability — these headphones felt really comfortable for extended listening at work, and there was a minimum of ear fatigue at medium volume levels... if you want a day-in, day-out working headphone companion that faithfully reproduces your song collection... you should put a set of Grado SR80i headphones into the mix."

Vented diaphragm: Grado headphones have a vented diaphragm design for a large, airy, three-dimensional sound.

Drivers: The diaphragm is made of a low mass polymer, developed with the compliance of the suspension in mind to achieve the desired low frequency response. The diaphragm's total mass is designed to provide a full 20 kHz bandwidth, while avoiding break-up at lower frequencies. The left and right drivers are matched to within 0.1 dB for exact imaging.

Connecting Cord: The 4-conductor cable design improves the control and stability in the upper and lower frequency range.

These headphones are great! For the price, you can't go wrong. They don't look pretty, but the sound is full, the balance is great, and I have found them to be quite durable. One draw back is the cord; it's very long and thick, and can be a hassle if you're trying to be mobile with your music, but aside from that I have no negative remarks. They do not cancel ambient/background noises well, but they're not made to. I like it because i can listen to my headphones and still hear when someone's trying to get my attention. Very happy with my purchase!
    Pros:
Sound is great- Full lows, good midrange, crisp highs. They rest on your head well, so long term use doesn't get uncomfortable.
    Cons:
The cord gets in the way a bit.

    Great Grados

Written By thehouseofdis, New York, NY on Monday, May 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Grado SR 80is to replace my old SR 80s which finally died after a dozen or so years. These are a bit larger than my original SR 80s but they sounded great right out of the box and continue to improve with time. I'm using the donut pads (available as an optional accessory) that used to come with the SR 80s but now only come with some of the more expensive headphones. I prefer them because they are a little more firm than the standard pads, but they can be fatiguing especially at first. The build quality can seem a little cheap but I like that it is low tech and in sure it keeps the price down, since these, like most (or all?) Grados are made in the US. These are open headphones so they are not noise canceling, which I didn't expect them to be. If the volume is up sound will leak out so they aren't really made for wearing on a plane or subway (the cable is really too long for this too) but they are great at work if one still needs to hear a phone or coworker talking. I would give these headphone 4.5 stars overall and only the comfort level brings them down from 5 stars.
    Pros:
Sound, sound, sound! Low tech look
    Cons:
Comfort over extended period of time

The Grado SR80i's are excellent sounding headphones. I hear detail to my music that I never heard before. They are the best sounding headphones you can get for under $100.
    Pros:
Great clarity and detail. Very comfortable to wear. Light weight open air design.
    Cons:
They look a little old fashioned, but in my opinion that adds to their appeal.

Lovely set of headphones for $99

Written By Jay, Pittsburgh, PA on Friday, April 19, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really enjoy the sound quality of these headphones. Like every other pair of Grados I've ever owned, it takes time for them to not seem too tight for my head (I have a great big head). But the sound quality makes it all worth it. The only headphones I've owned that come close soundwise for under $100 are the Grado SR-60s, which also took awhile to break in, size-wise.

    There is no noise reduction.
    Pros:
Sound quality. It's so "you are there."
    Cons:
Tight fitting headphones that take awhile to break in. I store them on top of a regular speaker, as if the speaker were my head. It's happening gradually, that they fit me better. If you want this much quality at this small a price, it's a fair exchange. The only other headphones I've liked this much cost $200, but they were so loose, they were always falling off my head, and I had to pay $100 twice to have them repaired.

These headphones sound great. I bought them as to use for my computer and listening through a DAC, you can hear everything that was recorded on the record. Most of my i-tunes songs were recorded from vinyl so the warmth of the recording really comes through with these 'phones. I've had Grado headphones before so I knew they were good.I would highly recommend these headphones to anyone who really cares about music.I auditioned a pair of Bose OE's and then these Grado's. There was no comparison. The Grado's sounded so much better and the Bose cost more.

    comfort,price,quality of sound

    Excellent phones for the money!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned several pairs of headphones over the years. My two favorite so far have been the Bose TriPort OE's and the Grado SR80i's. The Bose have the laid back east coast sound, while the Grado has the west coast more open sound even though they were made in Brooklyn. I very much like the open, balanced sound of the Grado's and the outstanding clarity with both voices and instruments. They are very comfortable even after long listening sessions and the cord is definitely heavy duty. The one complaint with the Bose is that the cord is flimsy but replacable. The noise reduction category is not really applicable to the Grado's since they are not designed as such. As far as the retro look, not a problem-I'm also retro.
    Pros:
An overall excellent choice with a nicely balanced, clear sound and a great buy in this price range.

Bought these for sound quality - frequency response and balance, etc. I use them in an office environment where I want to be able to hear sounds in the room. The Grado SR80i headphones deliver exactly what I wanted - open backed to be able to hear other sounds, delivering top quality music sound, well engineered and constructed to adapt for a comfortable fit, at an excellent price. Listening experience is now limited by the quality of the recording - not the delivery. (used with a DAC)
    Pros:
Open back design so you are not isolated from other sounds. Great frequency response. Clean sound. Comfortable adjustable fit. light weight. Great value for price.
    Cons:
    Not a long cord

    Grado headphones rock!!

Written By BigFrankieB19, Atlanta on Wednesday, January 30, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As an aspiring audiophile I was looking for an inexpensive entry level headphone. After researching I chose the Grado for a few reasons: the price, the reputation of Grado headphones as great for listening to rock music, and because Grado headphones are American made in Brooklyn, New York. I made the right choice. Although I am sure that I will eventually move into some higher priced, more finely tuned headphones, I will always be happy with my Grados.
    Pros:
Great sound with guitar heavy music. Good mid range sound with adequate bass. Very comfortable.
    Cons:
Noise reduction is minimal but not a concern for me. Open back design. If you are listening to Slayer in the same room as your wife, she will probably hate these headphones.

These headphones sound great, I like the open design, I want to hear around me. If my dog barks or the door bell rings I want to hear it. My son has Beats Solos and they are not close in sound quality. But they're good for him, 16yrs old he loves the excessive bass!

Great set of cans for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I already had a couple pairs of headphones including a pair of Sennheisers that I love (and still do) but I wanted to try out the Grado sound so I bought these. These are a great value in my opinion. They sound very forward, with great mids and highs. You feel like you are on stage with the band when listening to a good live recording with the headphones. These aren't for bassheads but then again if you are looking at these seriously then you probably already know that. I bought the L-cush pads from Crutchfield as well as prefer them to the stock pads despite the fact that they aren't quite as comfortable. In my opinion these headphones are great if you listen to rock or metal, but probably aren't the pair I'd reach for if I was listening to a rap or electronic music playlist.
    Pros:
exciting soundstage and clarity, made in the USA, semi-retro look
    Cons:
    bass is a little weak

As a whole, these headphones are too massive for the gym because they are very bulky and the audio wire is very thick, too long and too heavy. However, the sound for the money can't be beat. They are very comfortable because of the foam earpads.

    Love my SR80i's

Written By Erik, Minnesota on Sunday, December 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, these are NOT noise cancelling headphones, hence the low marks there. I use these at home so I don't need them to deafen me to the outside world. I was looking for something truly balanced and these cans certainly delivered. Aside from the clunky appearance these headphones are quite light and slightly smaller than I expected. The construction at the hinges is solid, no signs of weakness. The headband is of simple construction, the lack of additional padding is not noticed, and is quite comfortable. I can only describe the sound coming from these cans as "juicy". I fell in love with the pure and sweet sounding vocals, not to mention the deep balanced bass. These won't be shaking off your head, but will certainly deliver clear, accurate, mids and lows.

While these headphones are light, they did seem to have quite a bit of lateral pressure on my ears, I simply stretched out the headband a bit and was pleased to find I was able to wears these indefinitely with little to no discomfort. I have only 2 small gripes with this set. First, the housing for the actual speaker is shoddily glued in place. This can be fixed with another dab of hot glue, but should be a non-factor. Second, the wires from the stereo cable connect to both headphones and come to a "V" connection on the listeners chest. These can become twisted pretty easily and are a bit of a pain to untwist, but does not hamper the sound to any degree.

Bottom line, these are some great cans.
    Pros:
    Amazing sound clarity, lightweight, comfort.
    Cons:
Build quality could improve with a few small tweaks.

A great choice, if isolation isn't important

Written By Jason, Lafayette, IN on Saturday, December 08, 2012

I've owned my SR80s for about a decade now, and I'll never part with them. The soundstage is open and spacious, the timbre is very natural, bass is solid without being overpowering, and they don't pinch your ears during extended wear. The reviews complaining about the lack of isolation are completely correct - these won't let you shut out the outside world, and the outside world will hear what you're listening to. But if you don't mind the lack of isolation, I can't imagine a better set of headphones at this price point.
    Pros:
Sound quality far surpasses the price point - these babies just plain sound great.
    Cons:
Open-air design means you can't tune out a noisy environment, and folks nearby will hear what you're listening to. (Not so much a "con" as just the nature of the design.)

Grado SR801 phones give clear clean volume

Written By Lana, Bremerton, WA on Saturday, December 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had some very expensive Grado headphones about 10 years ago, and loaned them to a friend and never got them back. When I saw these for such a reasonable price, I wasn't expecting as good a quality as the ones I had , but was I surprised!! They deliver clear and clean sound with tons of volume, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a great set of phones at an affordable price.
    Pros:
Comfortable fit, do not hurt or pinch your ears. Volume is clear and clean, no back noise.
    Cons:
A little awkward to be taking with you if you are looking for something smaller, they are a little bulkier than some phones, would recommend them for at home use for computer, TV, movies.

Been looking for reasonably priced headphones at or near $100. I received a subscription email from Crutchfield suggesting the Grado SR80i. I read all the reviews for these on Crutchfield and Amazon.com. Reviews were all positive. I am not disappointed, they sound great and no fatigue on the ears. Prior to this I was using some Sony MDR-V250 headphones. I listen to Pandora and Sirius XM online on my Dell desktop computer at work. I also coupled this purchase with the NuForce uDAC-2. An awesome 1-2 punch!
    Pros:
Reasonable price. Sound and comfort excellent.
    Cons:
Not too great on the looks.
