Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDA-9883

by Robert Ferency-Viars
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine's CDA-9883 CD receiver powers your music with a high-powered internal amplifier. Your music will sound full-bodied and strong at normal listening levels, and you'll have the headroom to really crank the volume when you want to. You'll also find a stylish fold-down face, easy-to-use controls, and plenty of options for expanding your system.

Alpine's Bass Engine® feature lets you adjust the centerpoints of your treble and bass controls so you can really shape your tone. Three sets of preamp outputs provide connections for adding external amplifiers. If you have a subwoofer, Bass Engine's low-pass filter will keep the bass smooth and tight, while a high-pass filter ensures that your speakers aren't overloaded by too much bass.

Just add the optional iPod® connecting cable to activate Alpine's Full Speed controls for your iPod. You can also add a satellite radio, CD changer, or HD Radio™ tuner. Play it safe in your car with Alpine's optional Bluetooth® adapter, which creates a wireless interface for your cell phone or Bluetooth capable music player.

      External Device Controls

      Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps, WMA files with bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps, and AAC files with bit rates from 16 kbps to 320 kbps are supported. Variable bit rates are also compatible. Up to 510 files/folders and a maximum of 255 folders can be read from one disc. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name, and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you're playing a disc with CD Text, ID3, or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track or file by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track, and select it by pressing the play button.

Bass Engine: Bass Engine functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes. Bass Engine includes the following functions:

      • Bass Control:
        • Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz, 80Hz (default), 100Hz, or 200Hz
        • Bass Band Width (Q): Q1 (narrow), Q2, Q3, or Q4 (wide)
        • Bass Level: -7 to +7 (-14dB to +14dB in 2dB steps)
      • Treble Control:
        • Treble Center Frequency: 10kHz (default), 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz
        • Treble Level: -7 to +7 (-14dB to +14dB in 2dB steps)
      • High Pass Filter (HPF): speaker level and preamp outputs (other than the subwoofer output) have a selectable crossover (HPF); off (default), 80Hz, 120Hz, or 160Hz
      • Loudness: on/off
      • Defeat On/Off: reset the unit to its factory default bass and treble settings by turning the Defeat function on

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Subwoofer Pre-out: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, the CDA-9883 has a dedicated subwoofer output with a variable level of 0 to +15.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

Angle Mounting: Alpine recommends mounting the CDA-9883 no more that 35° above horizontal.

Wireless Remote: The CDA-9883 is compatible with the optional RUE-4202 wireless remote control (item number 500RUE4202) or RUE-4190 (item number 500RUE4910). The unit has a remote control sensor on the upper right corner of the faceplate.

Optional Auxiliary Input: With the optional KCA-121B Ai-NET/RCA interface cable or KCA-410C Versatile Link Terminal, you can input audio from an auxiliary source unit, such as a TV, VCR or portable unit.

Changer Name: You can change the name on the display to match the type of device connected to the CD changer input; Changer, USB, or Portable.

Clock Operation: This unit allows you to choose "keyed" or "unit on" clock operation. When the clock has been given display priority and the unit is turned off, the clock will be displayed whenever the ignition key is in the "on" or "accessory" position. If the clock is not given display priority, the clock is not displayed when the unit is off.

      External Device Controls

USB Adapter Ready: With the optional KCA-620M USB adapter (item number 500KCA620M), you can connect and control MP3 players that have USB connections. In addition, if you have MP3s stored on a USB thumb drive, you can select and play those files from the head unit.

Shoulda stuck with my original choice

Written By AH, Goodyear, AZ on Monday, January 26, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally had a JVC unit in my cart, and on a whim, decided to go with this Alpine, the 9883. I chose it becasue it was cheaper and came with all the stuff, to include the IPOD cable. I never ended up using the cable, so, it even more disappointing. Needless to say, this player has a lot of extras, , nothing for the run-of-the-mill guy like me who just wanted a player for his IPOD, btw, it never recognized when my IPOD was connected. Shortly after the install, which was less than fun with running a separate power wire for it, the player started kicking out CD read errors. I take very good care of my CDs, one of the few things I take great pride in keeping clean. Needless to say, it kept going, at least 10 CDs wouldn't play , either at all or just stop halfway through a song. None of these were CDrs or CDrws. My latest experience has a new CD stuck/jammed, in the deck. It not only stopped mid song, but won't eject it either.

Needless to say, Alpine is off the list for me. Thanks but no thanks, lots of great options, low on quality from this experience. The good thing is, Crutchfield was more than helpful with installation issues, and just general shipping time, selection, etc. I would neveer shop anywhere else unless I was really in a hurry. No knocks against Crutchfield.

      Mute button woes

Written By Kelly, Litchfield, CT on Wednesday, October 29, 2008
Installed in a 2005 Jeep Wrangler
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I will say Alpine makes a great product and the head unit is no
exception. The control this h/u gives me over my Type R sub and my CDT
component speakers is incredibly dynamic. That said there are occasions I
reach over to mute the music and I hit the "search/esc" button by accident.
It's no wonder this unit was quickly discontinued and replaced with a model
featuring the "search/esc" button nowhere near the mute. Overall I am
very pleased with this units, but I have had a few business calls where I
ended up embarassed and it has made me wonder if it might be time to
      upgrade to a newer model.

      Alpine all the way

I love Alpine. This deck powers my 4 type S speakers nicely. I also got an alpine
amp hooked up to it with a Type R sub. Love the whole package. This deck has a
lot of great control features like the iPod controlling and the subwoofer control.
Great display, looks great. All around an awesome product. Another A+ for Alpine.

      Great System!

Written By Jeff, Martinez, CA on Saturday, February 23, 2008

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did a lot of shopping for a system -- head unit, iPod and satellite; both online and at 'brick and mortar' stores. Crutchfield had the biggest selection, the best prices AND the best overall package (free iPod cable, free dash kit, free wiring harness). I've never even thought of attempting to install a system myself, but I decided to give it a shot. With the great Master Sheet instructions, the installation was flawless -- and surprisingly easy. Wiring the harness to the head unit was the hardest part for me, but with patience and a couple of calls to Crutchfield support when I had questions (they were VERY knowledgeable and helpful), it worked great! The system surpassed my expectations. The iPod and SAT controls are first-rate, and the system looks and sounds great with my existing factory speakers. I would HIGHLY recommend this Alpine system, AND buying it from Crutchfield!

I bought this for my daughter for christmas. The ipod connection is very fast and she really likes it. It is easy to install and to use. The face is also easy to remove and install. Of course Crutchfield had excellent instructions as well.

Ordered this deck to work with Ipod. Deck looks and sounds great, but the Ipod controls on the deck are very confusing and you can't contol from the Ipod itself. Over all Crutchfield experience was great as always.

Excellent price for this cd receiver with ipod capabilities. I bought the radio, had it installed in my daughter's car and it works and fits perfectly. The ipod capabilites are the reason that I bought this model. It's like an ipod on the dash and there are 10,000 songs on the ipod. Excellent sound. Highly recommended.
      Thank you Crutchfield.

      Alpine 9883 Receiver

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit for my father-in-law and installed it in his 2005 Chevy pickup. Instructions and tech support were first-rate (as always) from Crutchfield. This was a replacement for the factory installed CD/Cassette receiver which was not capable of playing MP3s. My father-in-law is tickled to death with the unit. I highly recommend this receiver to anyone with similar needs.

iPod Deck - Close but not quite

Written By Zach, Bend, OR on Wednesday, February 13, 2008
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this deck after quite a bit of research looking for an iPod controlling deck.
I think this deck sounds great, and looks good. I particularly like the advanced bass and treble controls, which let you not just set the levels of each, but the center frequency and range (range on bass only). This takes what looks like rudimentary tone controls, and get functionality closer to a seven-band EQ... One part of this EQ setup that I find particularly helpful is that if you are using stock speakers, or at least don't have a sub, you can move the center frequency of the bass to a somewhat higher frequency, and then turn up the bass. Stock type speakers have a much easier time handling this without distorting, rattling, etc.

      On the iPod:
this deck works pretty well controlling the iPod. The interface takes a little getting used to. From what I've read, however, Alpine has one of the best iPod interfaces. I've read there are a lot of bad interfaces out there (most of them). The only quirk: You have to turn off shuffle play on the deck before you can browse playlists/artists/etc. WHY!? So the sequence is, turn shuffle off, select playlist, turn shuffle back on. Stupid, Annoying, and gives the deck 4 stars instead of 5. If I were to try again, I'd try some of the new pioneer decks, which are looking pretty good for ipod interfaces.

      Great sound system

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought for my son so could hook up his ipod and allowed easy connection to a Kenwood powered subwoofer. At same time, replaced the original 4 speakers in 97 Avalon. Following the superb instructions and knowledgable tech support was able to install. Made a great father and son project. When was initially installing the head unit, the adaptor wouldn't fit and this was due to my not realizing I had a 6 speaker system(1 tinyl tweeter in each door). The tech sent me the correct adapter for no extra charge and recieved within a few days. Can't say enough for this type of support and am definately committed to Crutchfield for future purchases.

A great receiver with options to expand

Written By Dr. Claw, Parts Unknown, OH on Friday, February 08, 2008

I've been itching to own a latter-day Alpine head unit since discovering its superb handling of the iPod (via the KCE-422i cable that Crutchfield supplied free). While its full-speed (truth in advertising) iPod control is a highlight, this CD unit, unlike some other models that are similar, has many options for expansion (Satellite/HD radio, CD Changer, etc). The sound is nothing short of the quality Alpine has delivered for years as a leader in its field.

I moved from a Sony setup (XR-CA350X + XA-C40 splitter + CDX-757MX + XA-110IP, also courtesy of Crutchfield) to an-all Alpine deal (including their CHA-S634 changer), and I'm not looking back. The more recent (and expensive) models like the 9885 and 9886 may have more bells and whistles, but you're not losing much with the 9883. The only knock on it is some aspects of iPod control (but the speed makes up for it) and less than intuitive controls. Well worth the buy!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a bit nervous about the look of this unit from the picture they have here on Crutchfield, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the picture does not do it justice. The 9883 is a beautifully sleek unit that feels very durable in your hands and not at all flimsy like so many HU's today. There is no cheap, chrome plastic or obscure buttons. It's all pretty straight forward and looks great when installed.

The installation was amazingly easy. I'm a pretty technical guy and I was surprised at how smooth the installation went. All you need is some basic skills such as soldering and the ability to turn a screw and you're set. Even if you're not the technical sort, Crutchfield's instructions are very easy to follow, accurate and vehicle specific. The best part is that they give you everything you need to do the job right for FREE (most places charge for them ie: mounting hardware, wiring harness, iPod cable). Definitely would not pay some yahoo $100 to install it.

After it was installed the sound quality was noticably improved. Where my old HU struggled to maintain its sound this one does so without breaking a sweat. The 9883 is easy to use. The iPod controls are a little different than might be expected, but they are easy to learn and pretty logical.

Overall I love this HU and would highly recomend it. It looks, works, and sounds great.

This is my 3rd Alpine HU I have installed, Alpine has done it again. I put it my 07 Wrangler, crutchfield made it easy again with the proper wire harness and bracket. I have this set up with Polk 650's. Over all the sound is amazing. The iPod set up took about 10 min to get used to. I also have my XM set up with this. I would recomend this unit to anyone. My next purchase will be a powered sub to bring out the bass.

This is a great, budjet friendly headunit. It plays every music format imaginable and has the best iPod interface. Sound quality is excellent and the controls are easy to use. Overall a great pick. I would buy Alpine again. As always Crutchfield is the best place to buy.

      Pretty Awesome!

Written By sunyet76, Raleigh, NC on Wednesday, February 06, 2008

Was kinda worried about taking out my factory Monsoon radio in my 2004 VW Passat. Had head many horror stories of what needed to be done to get HU's to work with the factory speakers and sub. Was quite impressed with the wiring harness and instructions as to the ease of install. In about 20 mins I was up and runnning and the sound was great. Hats off to the CF team for making it so easy. Also for making it easy to get a good head unit to work with a system that it was not supposed to work with. Thanks Again!!!

      learning curve

Written By bob, pittsburgh,pa on Tuesday, February 05, 2008
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Paid for install. My last install was a FM converter. Thought this unit was garbage, couldn't get a good sound and couldn't figure out all the controls. Kept calling Crutchfield to explain stuff. The guys were great! They wanted me to be happy and handled my learning curve without laughing. After many hours of study I found the HPF (high pass filter) and turned the dumb thing off. I now have a sound that is beyond belief! I have a mercedes with a bose speaker system that sounds better than any live concert I've attended. Thanks for all the help,I'm still smiling.

      Alpine 9883 Rocks!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently bought this Alpine 9883 receiver from Crutchfield for my 2005 Nissan Altima and the sound quality really ROCKs. The learning curve for operating this system is less and that is a huge plus against pioneer systems. If you have not bought Alpine in the past - Give it a try - it is absolutely worth the money. Cheers

      Intuitively Simple Operation

Great sound, great price. Lots of adjustability without being gimmicky. Intuitively simple to operate if you're one of those who doesn't read the manual. Free iPod cable a huge plus - and just the right length, too.
