Our take on the JVC EXAD KD-AVX1

DVD receivers: They're not just for movies

DVD receivers add a new level of entertainment to your vehicle. You can watch a movie on the screen when you're parked on a Saturday night, or play a DVD through your rear seat video setup on the road. Touchscreen receivers allow you to breeze through menus with the tip of your finger. Most DVD receivers feature a USB input for audio from your iPod, and the ability to add an adapter that allows video to display on the screen. Some receivers even offer connections for a center speaker and a subwoofer, so you can build a full-fledged theater in your car, just like at home.

No question about it: you're going to love JVC's KD-AVX1. It's an in-dash DVD receiver with a 3" LCD monitor built right into its motorized, fold-down faceplate. It offers up a great blend of eye-catching aesthetics and innovative technology that'll keep you entertained whether you're driving cross-country or just camped out in your driveway.

Your DVD videos will show up right on the monitor. You can only watch them while you're parked, but you can always use the screen to display digital images you've uploaded from disc. The audio/video input's selectable modes let you mount a backup camera on your vehicle and connect it to the receiver, so you can use the monitor to give you a better view of what's behind you.

Like most DVD receivers, the KD-AVX1 plays your DVDs, standard CDs, MP3s, and WMAs. But here's the best part: Giga MP3 technology lets you load up to 100 hours of your favorite MP3s or WMAs on a single recordable DVD, and the KD-AVX1 will play them. That means you can store your entire music collection on just a few discs.

And finding your favorite tracks quickly is no problem, thanks to the intuitive front-panel keys (much like PDA controls) and helpful menu system. The combination of the two makes total system control quite easy, and contributes to the elegant style of the receiver.

Strong built-in power works with 24-bit digital-to-audio converters to deliver powerful, dynamic playback. Then the 7-band Intelli-EQ takes over, giving you the power to sculpt the sound to fit your vehicle's acoustics just the way you like it to.

The audio/video input lets you connect another source, such as your favorite game console. An audio/video output sends a signal to an external monitor and set of wireless headphones. Dual-zone capability means that the folks in back can enjoy a movie while you listen to another source up front.

Add a JVC SIRIUS tuner, antenna, and subscription for the endless variety of satellite radio. And three sets of 5-volt preamp outputs send a clean signal to any external amplifiers in your system. A wireless remote is also included for convenient operation.

General Features

3" TFT LCD Monitor: This unit features a 3" TFT LCD monitor built into the motorized, fold-down faceplate. The LCD serves as a video monitor and system information display.

Intelligent EQ (7-Band iEQ): This model has "Hard Rock", "R&B", "Pop", "Jazz", "Dance", "Country", "Reggae", "Classic", "User 1", "User 2", "User 3", and "Flat" preset EQ curves. "User 1", "User 2", and "User 3" presets can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For each User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 6.3 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -5dB to +5dB in 1dB increments.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-AVX1 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo. MP3 files with a bit rate from 32-320 kbps and WMA files with a bit rate from 32-192 kbps are supported. Each disc can have a maximum of 1100 files and 250 folders, with a maximum of 999 files per folder.

Dual Zone Capable: The 2nd Audio Output allows you to route all A/V entertainment to an optional back seat monitor and headphone system, allowing front seat passengers to enjoy independent CD or radio programming.

SIRIUS Satellite Radio Controls: This unit can control an optional SIRIUS Satellite tuner (item #607SIRJVC1). In addition to the SIRIUS tuner, you will need an antenna and subscription in order to receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio programming.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AVX1 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low", the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high", and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Source Naming: The KD-AVX1 allows you to assign names of up to 16 characters for AM and FM stations (30 station maximum), and a name up to 16 characters for a connected external component. You can also assign names of up to 32 characters for CDs (including a connected CD changer, but not MP3/WMA or CD Text discs--30 disc maximum).

+10/-10 and +100/-100 Buttons: When selecting CD tracks or MP3/WMA/JPEG file within a folder, you can jump ahead or jump back to the nearest track/file number that is a multiple of 10 by using the "+10" or "-10" buttons on the remote. For example, when selecting track/file 32 from track/file 6, you can press the "+10" button three times (>10, >20, >30) to get to 30, then the "track up" button twice (>31, >32) to get to track/file 32. For MP3/WMA/JPEG files with a number greater than 99, use the +100/-100 buttons.

Subwoofer Output: This unit has 2-volt gold-plated subwoofer preamp outputs (the front and rear preamp outputs are 5-volt outputs) on a 6" pigtail. The subwoofer output has independent level control, adjustable from 00 to 08, and a selectable low-pass crossover. You can select a cutoff frequency of 55, 85, or 125 Hz.

High-pass Filter: The front and rear speakers have an adjustable high-pass filter that can be set to 55, 85, or 125 Hz.

Audio/Video Input: The audio/video input can be set to one of the following modes:

  • Audio + Video: choose when connecting an A/V component like a VCR
  • Audio: choose when connecting an audio component like a cassette deck
  • Camera: use this mode when connecting an optional rear view camera
  • Camera Rev: the mirror image of the rear view through the rear view camera is automatically displayed on the monitor

Compatibility with Optional AUX Input Adapter: The optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item # 105KSU57) may be used to provide an auxiliary input on this unit. Item 105KSU57 connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the aux input adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that JVC calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. The dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), Auto (display window automatically dims when your car head lights are turned on), or On (display is always dimmed). Also, this unit has a timer that allows you to turn the dimmer on for a period of time each day. The timer allows you to select a start time and an end time for the dimmer.

Note: The amount of dimming is fixed, it cannot be adjusted, and the illumination wire must be connected for Auto operation.

DVD/Video CD Features

MP3/WMA Playback (Giga MP3): The KD-AVX1 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on DVD-ROM, DVD-R, and DVD-RW discs. The disc must be compliant with UDF-Bridge format. Discs must be created on a computer with a DVD burner. The DVD burner software application must be compliant with UDF-Bridge format.

Note: DVDs recorded on stand alone consumer DVD burners are not compatible with this unit.

Direct Access: Using the supplied remote, you can directly access any title or chapter on a DVD, and any track on a Video CD.

Multi-Angle Display: This function allows you to choose the viewing angle of scenes that were shot from a number of different angles.

Note: This function is limited to DVDs recorded with multiple camera angles.

Monitor Type: You can choose one of the following monitor types:

  • 16:9: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 16:9
  • 4:3 Letter Box: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3. While viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen.
  • 4:3 Pan Scan: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3. While viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars do not appear; however, the left and right edges of the picture will not be shown on the screen.

Scan Search: When playing a DVD or Video CD, there are five fast-play speeds in both directions (2x, 5x, 10x, 20x, and 60x).

Slow Motion: When playing a DVD or Video CD, there are five slow motion speeds in both directions (1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2).

Repeat Play: When playing a DVD, you can repeat the current chapter or title. When playing a Video CD, you can repeat the current track.

Random Play: When playing a Video CD, you can play the tracks in random order.

Intro Play: In this mode, you can play the first 10 seconds of each track on a Video CD.

Zoom: When playing DVDs, Video CDs or JPEG files, you can enlarge the picture using the zoom feature. You can choose one of six zoom settings. Once the image is enlarged, you can move the image around on the screen.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of Auto or On.

Digital Audio Output: You can choose the type of signal that passes through the optical digital output:

  • PCM Only: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder that is incompatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio
  • Dolby Digital/PCM: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder that is compatible with Dolby Digital
  • Stream/PCM: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder that is compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is equipped with JVC's "J-Link" CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer (257CHX1500). Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Optical Digital Output: The optical digital output on the rear of the unit allows you to connect an optional digital audio processor.

Audio/Video Output: The 2nd Audio Output (left and right RCA audio jacks) and Video Output (RCA composite video jack) allow you to connect an optional back seat monitor and headphone system.

Audio/Video Input: The audio/video input consists of left and right RCA audio jacks and an RCA composite video jack, allowing you to connect external equipment to this head unit.

A good, if stripped down, idea

Written By moo, Omaha on Sunday, June 11, 2006

Dont get me wrong, this is a solid head unit. It does exactly what it says it will, but thats about it. In spite of the LCD screen, it doesnt do much more than a bottom of the line HU that costs 75% less.

Pros:

The screen is neat.

It sounds good.

Very clean design, relatively easy to navigate the menus.

Can play music DVD's and display pictures for custom screen savers.

Plug and play Sirius support (too bad I have XM :(

Cons:

Very spartan features. Not terribly advanced beyond the most basic options. Built in EQ, with presets, radio tuner, DVD player. I think my personal MP3 player has a better equalizer.

No built in screen savers (not even an active equalizer?! ) and there are only a few backgrounds, all of which are just simple colors that appear on the sides of the screen. This can be fixed by putting some photos on the device, but for some reason the unit wont recognize my burned DVD's so I dont know how well that works.

The remote is terrible, is only useful as a DVD controller and even then its very complex and the print is small, dont even try to use it while driving.

My bottom line? I am something of an audiophile and was looking for something with some substance but this device does not deliver up to my standard. If the DVD-player gimmick is all you are looking for without a lot of frills, this is the HU for you. If you like to tune and tweak your audio, look elsewhere. This machine is too stripped down.

Excellent unit!!

Written By Adam, Ventura, CA on Sunday, May 07, 2006

I bought this unit because it seemed unique and did not take up a lot of space. It has been excellent. Great picture on the screen, great audio output (especially with the 5V pre-outs). It seems like the few negative reviews I've read have wanted this unit to do EVERYTHING. Just remember, this thing is a quality unit that plays DVDs on its own screen for ~ $600!

Does the job, but nothing more.

Written By Dusty D, Reno, Nevada, USA on Thursday, March 09, 2006

You have to realize that the equally priced alternative is a cheaper head-unit with an i-Pod Video or Creative Zen Vision.
The i-Pod starts off as a better option because it can leave your car and stand alone. What can turn the tide is the ability of the remote and receiver controls/capabilities.
The remote for this unit is a JOKE. Good for DVD and LOUSY for audio playback. You cant change ANY of the audio settings with the remote (EQ, FAD/BAL, etc.) and sometimes, the volume buttons dont even work!? So now youve got a DVD full of all different types of mp3s and you have to go through two menu screens on the face to switch the EQ as its randomly playing raggae to rock to hip hop, to techno, etc. for hours on end . . . :(
The EQ settings are ok and they are all adjustable by 10 different frequencies :) Reciever also has DTS turning your car into a home theatre w/HIGH qaulity surround sound :) The VX is also VERY powerful for those not using an amp.
Screen looks stunning but mp3 control is basic. You cant browse the disc without stopping play and loading each folder you go through one by one. VX lacks the ability to browse the disc while listening to mp3 playback. Also, the lack of ability to remember where it was in the track when turned off is sad especially considering the most budget of mp3 units can do this!? I didnt think this would be an issue but it is REALLY annoying.
The e-brake thing is a non-issue, the faceplate can change angles which is really cool, installation is tricky and will most likely involve cutting out part of the dash molding. Overheating is a big problem in my vehicle (85 Toyota pickup) leading to skipage.

Awesome!!!!

Written By Todd, Palm Beach Gardens, FL on Saturday, December 03, 2005

I put this unit into my 2005 f150 it matches perfectly. The screen is awesome. I have sirrius hooked up and is easy to navigate. An xbox is hooked up and is easy to play and see on the screen.

Pros:
Screen is crystal clear. You can see the picture no matter where you sit. Easy to use menu and equalizer. Give radio station preset titles. It looks awesome.

Cons:
To preset a radio station is a little annoying, but minor. The remote is kinda of sluggish; you have to hold the button for a few seconds.

Overall I would recommend it for any one seriously considering this unit. No regrets at all.

JVC KD-AVX1

Written By vinnie, San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, October 26, 2005

If you are looking for an awesome - inexpensive DVD/Stereo combination, this is the unit to own. It does everything I want it to do. Although it does not have the jumping dolphins, race cars, or other screen activities you might see in other models, its a unit for the conservative buyer / user. Besides, who really looks at that while their driving anyway? If you do, you might get a bad case of vertigo and crash your valued ride. The clarity of the DVD picture is awesome. Matter of fact, the installation shop stated that it was the best picture they had ever seen. Looking at the other negative reviews, I feel that these folks really didn't do their research prior to investing in this unit. It does have a 6 pre-set channel feature, an easy to use menu, and a cusomized equilizer (who really prefers seperate bass/treble over an equilizer these days?)- as others have complained about. The installation took less than an hour in my Siverado 2500HD Crew Cab (no hacking of any kind on the dash). The professional installer was so impressed, he bought the same unit for his personal vehicle. This unit has a very clean look to it, very simplified but user friendly (it looks awesome at night). Last, it does have a detachable face, which adds piece of mind in the dishonest world we sometimes live in. You will not find a better unit for the price Crutchfield has listed. A 10+ in my opinion.....

Annoyed by the little things

Written By Disruptor22, Chandler, AZ on Tuesday, October 25, 2005

I bought this player for the nice display (enen though it can play movies) and the DVD mp3 playback.

What upset me the most was the fact that the player would restart the song after turning off the car. The next thing that annoyed the world out of me was the fact that when placed on random, it would play say a song you just hear 5 to 10 songs later out of the WHOLE 800 songs I had on just one DVD. That was really annoying.

The tuner programming I found quite annoying and a different type of setup programming took me a while to get used to.

Other than that, the player was decent, decent sounds decent play back, could use a bit better colors on the screen with a little bit better resolution.

With some added features for the little things, this could be a great reciever, but I am thinking of going to a MP3 deck thats Ipod compatable. I don't know though, I would perfer to find a decent DVD deck for music.

Slightly dissappoined

Written By Andrew, New Baltimore, MI on Thursday, September 29, 2005

PROS: 7 Band EQ
Super clear screen
SUB out that is fully adjustible
Giga MP3 on any type of dvd recordable, even the little ones
Old JVC remote operates the unit
Internal amp is defeatable, you can turn it off.
very good sound

CONS: no fw/rw in mp3 tracks
unit does not remember last position of mp3
Sudden ATT not a sweeping gradual mute
No radio presets on the face
No volume KNOB, I hate having to push the button a thousand times to adjust the volume
No spectrum analyzer, just boring screen while playing cds or mp3s
No custom background picture

I really wish JVC would have packed a few more useful features into this unit, I would have payed the extra $ just to have them included. Other than that it is an awesome unit.

I guess you can't please everybody

Written By Josh, Charm City on Tuesday, September 06, 2005

Most of this review is to respond to some of the nit-picky issues others have mentioned abou this head unit. (And by the way, I dont work for JVC, but I do own this particular unit which was purchased from Crutchfield)

MP3s starting over:
So what if the unit starts at the beginning of the last mp3 played when you turn in back on? Is it that big of a deal? Most songs are typically only 3-4 minutes long anyway. If you dont want to hear it again, skip to the next song.

FF/RW MP3s:
Again, most songs are typically 3-4 minutes long - what are you really fast-forwarding or reversing to anyway - shouldnt you be listening to the song? That is why you saved it to your disc, right? I dont think I ever fast-forwarded or reversed once on my last mp3 player even though it had that functionality.

Equalizer:
Why wouldn't you want one? Simply having bass and treble controls is just not enough anymore. Dont you want to tailor your sound using a 7-band EQ?

Remote buttons:
Contrary to what one reviewer said, there are only a few buttons at the top of the remote that arent used by this head unit unless you connect an optional backseat monitor.

Fitment:
Installation was never an issue - even though a few people on here complained about the oversized faceplate. It went into my 2005 honda civic without incident.

The screen is amazing. The 3" LCD is plenty big. DVDs play with exceptional clarity. The giga-MP3 capability is probably the best feature. I fit my entire music collection onto one DVD with room to spare. Best of all, this unit is half the price of the more expensive multimedia units with most of the same features. Bravo JVC!
