Sound Ordnance

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Sound Ordnance™ M-4050

by Buck Pomerantz

Win the battle for great sound in your ride. Sound Ordnance amplifiers feature tough construction, rugged looks, and a 3-year warranty, so you can enjoy the full power of your music for the long haul. Even better, you can add Sound Ordnance to your arsenal at a surprisingly affordable price.

The Sound Ordnance M-4050 4-channel amplifier deploys 50 watts RMS to each channel, giving your music plenty of firepower. You can also bridge the amp to 2-channel mode to mobilize a pair of subs with 180 watts RMS each, or send 180 watts to a sub while the front channels run your full-range speakers. An adjustable high-pass filter makes sure your full-range speakers operate within their optimum range and give you the best tone possible. If you're driving a sub, the low-pass filter and selectable bass boost allow you to control your bass barrage at will.

The M-4050 amplifier uses sophisticated power supply and output technologies to ensure clean amplification from the inputs all the way to your speakers. Special circuits protect the amp from overheating and short circuits, and a turn-on delay virtually eliminates that annoying thump when you turn your system on.

Highlights:

Power Ratings: The Sound Ordnance M-4050 is a 4-channel Class AB amplifier with an RMS power rating of 50 watts per channel into 4 ohms, and 90 watts per channel into 2 ohms. The amp can also be bridged into a 4-ohm load for a power rating of 180 watts (x 2). Power ratings are measured with an input power of 14.4 volts.

Crossovers: The M-4050 is equipped with both high-pass and low-pass crossovers. The front channels (channels 1 and 2) and the rear channels (channels 3 and 4) have separate crossovers. You can set the low-pass cutoff frequency between 50Hz and 250Hz, and the high-pass cutoff frequency between 80Hz and 2 kHz. Separate switches let you select low-pass, high-pass, or full range operation for the rear channels, and high-pass or full range for the front channels. The crossovers have a 12dB per octave slope.

Bass Boost: The amplifier has a bass boost switch, labeled Super Bass, to give small subwoofers more volume in the low frequencies. You can select the amount of boost with the 3-way switch: 0dB, 6dB, or 12dB. The Super Bass feature is available for the rear channels only.

LED Indicators: The M-4050 features two LED indicators: a green LED that illuminates when the amp is powered on, and a red LED that illuminates when the amplifier is in protect mode due to overheating or a short circuit in the speaker wire.

    Connections

Removable End Caps: The end caps on the M-4050 are removable with a 3mm Allen wrench (not supplied) to make it easier to attach the power and speaker wires.

Power Connections: The power and ground connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. (An 8-gauge amplifier wiring kit is recommended.) The remote turn-on terminal is a set screw terminal that will also accept up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The speaker connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

RCA Inputs and Outputs: The amplifier features two pairs of stereo RCA inputs for connecting your head unit--one pair for the front channels and one pair for the rear channels. If your head unit only has one pair of preamp outputs, you can feed all four amplifier channels by connecting optional Y-adapters. (You will lose front-to-back fader capability if you connect the amplifier using Y-adapters.) There is also a pair of stereo RCA outputs for feeding the preamp signal to another amplifier, if needed.

Fuses: The M-4050 features two 20-amp ATC blade fuses.

    Bang for the Buck

Written By TomB, Amity, PA on Wednesday, May 22, 2013

If you are on a budget, but do not want budget sound...You will want this amp. I just finished the install in my 1998 Jeep Cherokee today. Kenwood headunit, this amp, 35watt RMS Pioneer speakers in front doors, an a 10" Kicker Comp in a truck box mounted behind front seats. I had a similar setup in a Cherokee that I owned previously, the only difference being the amp. My budget this time around was limited, even though my install space was not. It is a big amp..yes....well worth the money?? Absolutely!!! My sister has been tossing around the idea of me installing a system in her Focus and my Jeep just put the final nail in the coffin on that decision. She thought Amps and Subs were for noise you can hear around the block. This setup is so crystal clear and POWERFUL!!! The 180watts going to the sub (with two channels bridged) is no bull. My old system used a 4 channel Kenwood 800watt amp bridged going to the same kind of box and It cant even be compared. I put in a CD of my sisters (Kenny G's Titanic sound track) and the sound quality between the crystal clear highs and seat vibrating bass made my hairs on my neck stand on end. And that is not my kind of music. WOW..that is all I have left to say...WOW... Long review, but I want folks to know that $100 plus change can really get you a fine amp for your ride. Thanks Crutchfield!!
    Pros:
Outstanding power. Nice layout of connections and adjustments...makes for a clean/easy install
    Cons:
Are you kidding me?? Umm.....I didn't buy one sooner?? Yes..it sounds that good!!!

    Astounding!

Written By Jimmy, Florida on Monday, May 20, 2013

I was astounded at how good my new M4050 sounds for the price! II bought my M4050 last week to replace another older different brand amp that had problems. My old amp was heavier and had a smaller chassis but the M4050 sounds 100% better, has plenty of power and the sound is absolutely crystal clear. I have the front channels connected to 2 pair of Kicker KS60 coaxials and a pair of older Alpine Type R tweeters, and bridged the rear channels to a single 10" Alpine SWE 10" sub in a sealed enclosure. I have put my system through some testing since I installed my M4050 last week and it hardly even gets warm, even after 30 minutes of continuous loud volume. My whole system sounds great, both at high and low volume. When I found out Sound Ordnance is Crutchfield's "house brand" I knew it was a good amp because Crutchfield would not put their name or reputation on a bad product. These Sound Ordnance amps sound fantastic and you just can not beat the price. I will 100% recommend Sound Ordnance to anyone who needs a great amp at a budget price. My M4050 is without a doubt the best inexpensive 4 channel amp I have ever heard. It sounds every bit as good as other amps at 2 or 3 times the price. These Sound Ordnance amps are an excellent sounding amp with plenty of power at a great price. Thanks again Crutchfield!
    Pros:
Great sound, crystal clear mids and highs and plenty of power for subs. The amp looks good too. Seems to perform perfectly and not get hot at all. even with both front and rear channels running at 2 ohms.
    Cons:
I would prefer a variable bass boost knob or potentiometer instead of a fixed 0, 6 or 12 db bass boost, but that is a very minor issue. The amp is a bit large, but I had room for it. Some have said the plastic mounting brackets break, I could see how that might happen, so it is best to pre-drill mounting holes and run the screws in by hand or a long shank Phillips bit on a cordless drill but be sure to use a drill with a clutch set about in the middle to avoid damaging the brackets.

    Pros:
    Great sound, solid performing amp.
    Cons:
The side covers are plastic and held onto the unit by 2 allen screws. It is a little annoying trying to attach them after wiring up the amp. I had a difficult time tightening the mounting screws with the cover on.

    Plenty of Power

Written By Alek, Grand Rapids, MI on Monday, November 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp has plenty of power to drive my Polk db501 front speakers and my Infinity Kappa 693.9i rear speakers. As many have said, the plastic mounting frame feels weak, but it did not break when I screwed it down to the box, so there's that.

A strange note, when screwing down the positive power terminal (onto wire that was NOT yet connected to a power source) my screwdriver arced to the metalicized plastic frame. I checked the fuses, and one of them had blown. I haven't noticed any indication of damage in terms of sound quality, but it was quite surprising and a bit disconcerting.
    Pros:
    Powerful, clean sound Affordable
    Cons:
Plastic Mounts feel Weak and Cheap

Written By MikeE, Cave Springs, AR on Sunday, May 20, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a reasonably-priced amp to power two 6-1/2 speakers plus a 10" sub and this fit the bill perfectly. The built-in high-pass and low-pass filters are just what I needed. As others have mentioned, this amp is pretty big, but I put it in a 32' RV so room wasn't a concern.
    Pros:
Nice features at a good price.
    Cons:
It may be a little too big for some applications.

I got this amp for my Jeep..hits under the back seat. makes my speakers sound great..I have a 10'' sub & 5 1/4 hooked up. bridged the sub so it has 180 watts & 50 watts to each of my 5 1/4 sounds great!! Makes my sub bump but I can still hear the words from my other speakers just fine. I was alittle worried about not being able to hear the words having a Jeep Wrangler..But it sounds better then I thought it would!!

Price, sound quality, bass boost, allows you to hookup two subs or one sub & 2 other speakers or 4 smaller spearks.

    SO M-4050

Written By Zach, Ohio on Saturday, February 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice amp for the money, it feels very durable when you are holding it. It has never come close to getting hot or even very warm. It was very easy to set up, everything is labeled well. Crutchfield's tech support is awesome, they were very helpful.

The only thing i would say is bad is the size. I wouldn't even consider it a bad thing really, just if your trying to conserve space it is a bit bigger than other amps of the same power. It doesn't really matter to me because my subs already take up the whole trunk so i'm not going to be putting anything else in there anyways haha
    Pros:
good quality, doesn't overheat, labeled well, terminals are easy to use/switch wires etc
    Cons:
    i little bit big

    Big sound, big amp

Written By A. Hennessy, Boston, MA. on Thursday, February 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Probably the best upgrade I made to my system. Easy set up and Crutchfield even helped with the crossover settings when I called tech support. Songs that you have heard thousands of times sing with detail that you have never heard before. If you listen to a lot of music in your ride it is worth the price to upgrade the sound. The only drawback was the size of the amp, it is big compared to other similarly powered amps. If you have to install this in a tight area it might make adjustments a pain. I have bought several Sound Ordnance products and they were well worth the investment. Life is too short to listen to lousy fidelity.
    Pros:
Great sound, very loud, very reasonably priced. Great tech support.
    Cons:
Very big, whats up with the dog tags?

This amp works well once it gets warmed up but for the first five minutes of driving all I hear is a loud rumbling noise even with the source turned all the way down.
    Pros:
    Looks nice and good sound.
    Cons:
Needs to warm up before clean sound comes.

    SO M 4050 amp

Written By Jeremy, FW, Indiana on Saturday, December 31, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my wife's Jeep Liberty. We were trying to do something on a budget and beat the factory sound. We're pushing a set of Pioneer 6 1/2 separates and another pair of 6 1/2 Pioneers for the doors, all off the front 2 channels. The rear channels are bridged and driving a single 10" Rockford Fosgate sub. The set up was an afterthought when the 4 Pioneers didn't deliver the sound that we wanted. The same afterthought resulted in the set up that we now have. The amp is seeing a constant 2 ohm load and seems to perform well. No sound complaints what so ever. She does not have fader control now, but never used it anyway.

The mounting brackets are mediocre at best. Plastic, c'mon! You need to slide a screwdriver through a hole in the top of the amp to screw it down. Holes are too small and also preclude you from using proper screws. When looking into sub options, I opted to go away from the compact powered Sound Ordnance sub because of a customer review indicating that mounting of that sub was also poor. It wouldn't be fair to say that their R & D department designed and built nice stuff but failed to actually install it in the real world, but I have thought it.
    Pros:
    Sound, performance, price.
    Cons:
    Mounting brackets.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got a whole entry level system for my sons truck. All Sound Ordinance; 4 speakers, 4 channel amp and the 8 inch sub connected with a JVC head unit. I was not to impressed when i opened the boxes but i thought lets give them a shot. After everthing was connected I was blown away with how good it was for the price. You will not win any sound audio contests but if you want a good everyday audio system you will not be disappointed. PS: That little 8 inch sub is awesome I just wish it had mounting brackets.
    Pros:
    Great amp.
    Cons:
    nothing yet.

It does the job well but check out its size. It is big for the power output. The unit has chrome plated bezels near the terminal blocks so don't try to tighten the power terminal with the battery connected. Oops.

Good quality amp for the money

Written By KB, Badin NC on Wednesday, June 08, 2011

Bought this amp to replace the factory amp in my 99 BMW 328ic. Sounds great and didn't have to spend big bucks to get it. Tech support was great in finding a problem with the first amp shipped, second was shipped free of charge and as always it was on my doorstep within a couple days. Would definitely buy this brand again. Thanks Crutchfield
