Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Our take on the ZVOX Z-Base V220

by Marshall Chase

With the Z-Base V220, ZVOX delivers their powerful platform speaker technology in a version sized for smaller TVs. Flexible connection capabilities include analog and digital audio inputs, for both newer and older TVs and components. Best of all, you'll enjoy clean sound that's surprisingly robust.

Dialogue reclaimed, commercials tamed

If you can't hear what the actors are saying, it's nearly impossible to follow the story. That's why ZVOX created a dialogue enhancement feature that gives voices new clarity and prominence. What's more, ZVOX knows how sponsors love to blast us out of our seats when they go to a commercial break. Thanks to the output leveling feature, the V220 keeps commercials on a short leash so you can just relax.

ZVOX Z-Base V220

Solid performance, sturdy support

This one-piece system houses three full-range speakers, a high-output woofer, and built-in amplification — there's no need to use a separate receiver or run wires to any external speakers. Plus, the V220 is designed to serve as a convenient base for smaller flat-panel TVs with screen sizes up to 32". Even older TVs sit perfectly atop this sturdy wooden cabinet that can support up to 120 lbs. Place the Z-Base directly underneath your TV and you won't have to worry about making extra room for it on your entertainment stand.

Loaded with convenient features

The Z-Base V220 is a great place to plug in your iPod® or portable player for terrific sound. It has a minijack input on the front panel for easy access. The display on the V220 lights up from behind the front cloth grille to show you volume and mode then disappears when not in use. And the V220 learns the commands of your TV remote, giving you one less clicker to keep track of. Signal-sensing circuitry powers the system on and off along with your TV.

    Features

Overview: The ZVOX Z-Base 220 is a single-cabinet audio system for your flat-panel television. It combines high-quality speakers, a built-in amplifier, a built-in subwoofer, and ZVOX PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound processing to give you an easy surround sound solution. Since there are no speaker wires to deal with, you just need to connect the power and audio cables to get started.

TV Compatibility: Most 19"-27" flat-panel TVs (and some 32" TVs) can be placed directly on top the Z-Base 220. The television should weigh 70 pounds or less. The TV's pedestal base should not exceed 16" width or 13" depth. You can also place the unit on a shelf directly below the TV, if desired.

Class D Amplifier: The ZVOX Z-Base 220 is bi-amplified, using a specially designed, highly-efficient 35 watt Class D amplifier that includes electronic contouring for superb frequency response.

Three 2" Drivers: The ZVOX Z-Base 220 uses three 2" main speaker drivers that use a long-throw design to create a remarkable wide range, and accurate sound.

5-1/4" Subwoofer: In addition to the three main speakers, the Z-Base 220 has a built-in down firing high-mass, long-throw 5-1/4" subwoofer in a ported enclosure.

PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound: The Z-Base 220 uses ZVOX's proprietary PhaseCue II virtual surround processing to give you rich, three-dimensional sound with movies or music. PhaseCue II, as its name implies, manipulates the phase of the separate channels to "fool the ear" into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. The benefits of PhaseCue II vary greatly based on program material. Live music and well-recorded modern movie soundtracks will deliver rich, three-dimensional sound - pulling the sound out from the speakers and into the room, literally surrounding the listener.

    • Music: With music, PhaseCue II creates a very wide soundstage - it literally sounds like you are listening to speakers eight feet apart from each other.
    • Movies: When listening to a good movie, the soundtrack will envelop you - putting you in the middle of the action.

Note: While the virtual surround experience isn't the same as a high-quality 5.1-channel system, the performance is much better than the speakers built-in to most TV's.

Wood (MDF) Cabinet: The Z-Base 220 features a cabinet made of MDF (medium density fiberboard), the same material used in most high-end loudspeakers. Its low-profile design blends perfectly with most flat-panel TVs.

Disappearing Display: The Z-Base 220 features a four-digit display located behind the speaker grille that shows the current setting for volume, bass/treble, and PhaseCue II (virtual surround). It also shows when you have engaged the Mute, Output Leveling (OL), or Dialog Emphasis (DE) features. A few seconds after you stop using your remote (or front panel) controls, the display disappears completely.

    Controls

Dialogue Emphasis (DE): Dialogue Emphasis (DE) provides an easy-to-use and effective method for improving the intelligibility of television dialogue. By pressing the Dialogue Emphasis (DE) function button on the remote control, the system engages a circuit that mimics the functions of a hearing aid. The frequencies used by human voices are dynamically emphasized, while other frequencies are minimized.

Output Leveling (OL): The Output Leveling (OL) function prevents large changes in volume levels. Simply press the Output Leveling (OL) button on the remote control and a sophisticated processor takes over, making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer, so there are fewer jarring moments when switching channels or when commercials come on. This system also helps by boosting the audio levels from a DVD or Blu-ray player that are not loud enough.

Surround Settings: You can adjust the level of PhaseCue II virtual surround processing effect. You can select from Surround One (low effect), Surround Two (moderate effect), Surround Three (strong effect).

Tone Control: The Z-Base 220 has independent bass and treble controls. Each has a range from -4 to 4, and can be adjusted using the remote control only.

Remote Control: The included wireless remote has controls for power, input select, mute, volume, PhaseCue II effect level, bass and treble level. and DE/OL functions.

Programmable: The new Z-Base 220 can be programmed to respond to your current remote control. The illuminated display walks you through a less-than-a-minute programming cycle. Then your TV remote, cable box remote, or satellite receiver remote can control volume up, volume down, mute, and power on the ZVOX system.

Auto Standby: The Z-Base 220 will enter a low-power Standby mode after approximately 5 minutes of no audio signal.

    Connections

One Cable Connection: The Z-Base 220 requires only one connection cable. You can use either analog or digital connection options to your television.

Audio Inputs: The ZVOX Z-Base 220 offers analog and digital audio inputs:

    • Digital Inputs: The Z-Base 220 is equipped with a coaxial digital (single RCA) and an optical digital (Toslink) input. The digital inputs will accept 2-channel PCM  only (not compatible with Dolby Digital bitstream signals).
    • Analog Inputs: The Z-Base 220 has two rear-panel stereo RCA analog inputs and a front-panel 3.5mm analog audio input. The front panel input is handy for connecting an iPod or other portable audio device.

    The great ZVOX

Written By Dick, Minnetonka, Mn on Thursday, May 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We purchased the ZVOX ZBASE V220 to enhanced the sound form a 32 inch tv. My sister in law was having a hard time hearing the sound from the tv. The ZVOX sure did the trick. The sound is so much better that that which came out of the original tv speakers. Another plus was how easy it was to set up. We would highly recommend this unit. As usual, Crutchfield was most helpful in choosing this unit and getting it shipped out.
    Pros:
GREAT SOUND FOR SUCH A SMALL UNIT. IT IS GREAT THAT THE TV SITS ON TOP.
    Cons:
    NONE

Great value and sound for the $

Written By Kenton B, Honolulu, HI on Thursday, April 25, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We all know TV speakers suck, and in those installations/locations where a home theater is impractical an alternate solution is required. The V220 is the solution in my bedroom where the 50" wall mounted Samsung plasma had awful sound to go with its stunning picture. What a difference this little box makes. Great sound, wide soundstage, a hint of surround, clear dialogue and vocals, output leveling, optical digital input, tone controls on the remote, what's not to love? And IT PLAYS LOUD without a hint of distortion when the Blu-Ray player demands it. Granted, it is not my Def Tech setup in the living room home theater, but I never tire of listening to it, and that is high praise indeed. ZVOX, you rock!
    Pros:
Compact size, great sound, ease of use.

    Great Product

Written By Bruce, Huntington Beach CA on Sunday, March 31, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a Crutchfield believer. I have a bigger ZVOX hooked to my 50" set. I had bought a 32" Samsung from Crutchfield and really like the set but not the sound. The ZVOX makes all the difference. Crisp sound without having to blast the volume.
    Pros:
    Inexpensive, easy to set up.
    Cons:
Not really a con. The Samsung set does not allow me to turn off the speakers. I wanted them off so I had to fiddle with the volume controls on the set and the ZVOX so that the volume on the set was off at the level we wanted to listen.

    Great Soundbar

Written By Mollie, Houston, Tx on Thursday, March 28, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great soundbar for small TV. Bought a 24" television for the kitchen. The sound on smaller TVs leaves something to be desired so we searched and purchased the ZVOX based on others reviews. We were not disappointed with the ease of installation or the quality of the sound.
    Pros:
    Small size, easy install
    Cons:
No cons for the ZVOX only the fact that most smaller TVs have no way to turn off their speakers which means we could not teach the cable remote to operate the sound. Have to use 2 remotes, 1 for on/off, channels and the other for sound.

    Excellent Sound Quality

Written By RichR, Concord, CA on Wednesday, February 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The additional clarity and sound quality was exactly what we wanted. The base is in an enclosed cabinet but the sound projects just fine. We weren't looking for true surround sound, just better quality and we got just that. My wife likes to listen to the sat. dish's music channels and now she can hear the music.
    Pros:
Easy to install. Reasonable cost. Good quality sound.
    Cons:
Need to make sure the TV speakers are sync'ed to the base. Our TV doesn't have the ability to turn off the speakers so the volume adjustment needs to be the same for both speakers in the TV and the box to sound right.

    Awesome TV Speaker

Written By quickguy, vernon CT on Friday, January 25, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The easiest and best sounding speaker bar I have ever used. Two mins to set up and WHAMO. This Lil box sounds extremely detailed and plays LOUD. I have readreviews stating sub woofer shook the whole TV. I have topped my V220 with a 47 inch Sony LCD. The base is just one inch smaller than the v220. No shakes or rattles of any kind. So easy to set up to my ATT Uverse remote. I will admit the Surround leaves it a little short but the three different settings are useful and noteable both on TV and DVD. Great midrange and highs. To my ears the lows are perfect and yes you can feel the impact. Dialouge emphasis is outstanding, If nothing else worth the price of unit aolone.. Build quality and fit and finish are excellent. I have not been this excited about TV since cable came about. Buy this , YOU WILL NOT regret it.
    Pros:
Small size. Solid wood cabinet. Fit and finish. Ease of hook up. Clear sound.
    Cons:
Lacks a little bit in surround sound area but still ACCEPTABLE.

    ZVOX Z-Base V220

Written By mns3dhm, Fort Worth, TX on Monday, January 21, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using the ZVOX Z-Base V220 in my kitchen and it's a vast improvement over the TV speakers. The ZVOX has a small footprint and fit right under the Direct TV receiver. Connections and setup are extremely simple and I can operate the ZVOX using the Direct TV remote, which is a plus. The device has decent sound quality and a number of preset sound modes that can be used to enhance dialogue, increase surround effects, reduce volume during commercials, etc. ZVOX claims a frequency response of 55 Hz- 2 kHz so, while it's adequate for my kitchen application, you'd probably want one of their larger units for your primary TV setup.
    Pros:
Good sound quality overall Easy to connect and setup Small form factor
    Cons:
Dialogue enhancement OK but not great (could be due to speaker location, room interaction, etc.)

    Fills the bill

Written By PaulJ, Campton Hills, IL on Sunday, January 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted some way to boost the audio quality of my 32" Sony Bravia, but was constrained by 1) furniture size; and 2) budget size. Most regular sound bars were simply too big for my TV cabinet. So I thought I'd try the ZVOX since it fit under the TV. I've had the unit for a couple weeks now, and am very pleased. I ordered it from Crutchfield on a Monday and got it Friday (with standard shipping). After reading the materials (there's a quick set up guide), I had it installed in about 10 minutes. Synchronizing my (AT T U-verse) cable remote took a bit longer, but after about 30 minutes I was set and ready to go. The sound, while not "home theater" quality, was still far and away better than TV alone. The black front looks fine (volume indicator goes off moments after level is set/reset), and lifting the TV monitor a few inches up helps with viewing, too. Audiophiles might scoff, but this was exactly what I needed.
    Pros:
Easy to install. Very nice sound quality. Perfect for those who want audio improvement but don't want to invest in a home theater system, or don't have the room to do so.
    Cons:
    none yet

Very nice unit. Using this in the bedroom with a 26" TV. Used to have to turn the TV up high to understand dialog in the shows, now can play at a low volume and hear everything quite well. Lots of inputs and like the fact that it shows no lights when on or off.

Great sound, fits nicely under the TV.

    ZVOX Z-Base V220

Written By Tom, Mobile, Al on Sunday, January 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product works as expected. Had to get with ZVOX customer support to set up due to my 39" Toshiba not having an internal speaker cut-off capability (why Toshiba would have all the external audio jacks w/o this cut-off is beyond me, but that's a different story). Only problem is a loud sub-woofer pop when the unit is turned off with the Direct TV remote. Customer support was no help, almost indifferent to this problem.
    Pros:
Works as expected, low end price for a 2nd TV.
    Cons:
Set up difficulty, sub-woofer pop when turned off.

Great product and excellent customer support

Written By DK, Buffalo Grove, IL on Friday, January 04, 2013

Simple to set up, sound quality is a huge improvement over my TV speakers. Called customer support with a customer support with an issue with the triggering of Auto Standby . The Customer Service agent was very knowledgeable and helped to isolate the problem, which was caused by the cable signal and not caused by the Z-Base.
    Pros:
Setup is very easy. Sound quality is great. Compact form factor looks nice. Affordable.

    My new ZVOXZ-Base V220

Written By Phil, Bishop, CA on Monday, December 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For awhile I thought I was losing my hearing. I could see people's lips moving on TV shows, but what they were saying was badly garbled. Same with music, especially on the lower notes. On talking with a Crutchfield rep it was suggested to me that a supplementary speaker system would be of great help. Most TV sets, especially the smaller ones, do not have the space to install larger speakers. The ZVOX Z-Base V220 V220 was recommended as a likely remedy for my problems, so I ordered one from Crutchfield. Written setup instructions were minimal but adequate, especially on the use of the supplied remote. A couple of calls to Crutchfield's tech support quickly resolved them. A good feature is that this equipment may be programmed to operate with your regular TV remote. Bottom line: It constitutes a great improvement over your original equipment.. I highly recommend it.
    Pros:
Much better sound from your TV.
    Cons:
Setup a bit difficult. Be sure to read the instructions twice before attempting it. Crutchfield's tech support is of great help here if and when necessary.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds just as good as the 550 we have in the living room. Would recommend this small unit to anyone who wants to fill a small room with great sound. Very easy to program to work with my Directv remote.
    Pros:
Small size works well with my 22inch LG. Ease of use.
    Cons:
    None

    Excellent versatile small speaker

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set up in a few minutes. Just enough inputs for a simple system. I have it connected to Apple AirPort Express (3.5mm) and Apple TV (optical) as well as cable (D COAX) and old school gaming systems (RCA). It is a substantial improvement over the TV sound. As others have noted, the bas is not what you could expect from a dedicated sub, but is good for TV and great for most music (I stream my library from multiple devices). Bass heavy music is less impressive. The the price, it is a good value, and accurately reviewed. The surround simulation is a small improvement, but nothing spectacular .
    Pros:
Simple, good value, unique form factor, awesome large disappearing display
    Cons:
    No sub output.

    ZVOX Z-Base V220

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ZVOX base 220 is everything and more than the reviews and description of sales say, Great design, compact and delivers sound so much better than expected and so easy to connect. The settings displayed on the front panel allow for volumn control, balance of base and trebel but also "Dialog Enhancement" "d e" The purchase allows 30 days trial period for return and full refund if not satisified. Believe me, You will NOT return it or give it up under any circumstances. The very best sound enhancement system available anywhere for the money. compared to other systems offered costing double, this one has double the pleasure. I know, I shopped going to stores and listening to demonstrations. If you have a large screen TV you have got to have this sound system. JUST-DO-IT !
