Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the Audioengine P4

by Kristen Schaub

High-performance, passive speakers for any amplifier

Compact, beautiful, and affordable — you get the triple whammy of speaker design with Audioengine's P4s. "But how do they sound?" you ask. Your music and movie soundtracks will sound incredibly transparent, alive with midrange presence and crisp, crystalline highs. We wouldn't expect anything less from Audioengine. Close your eyes and you'll be amazed that the spacious, wide-open sound you're hearing is coming from such small speakers.

Out of the box

Audioengine first caught our attention with their excellent-sounding line of powered speakers. These passive speakers are a great option when you already have an amplifier or receiver that you'd like to use. Pair them with Audioengine's N22 integrated amplifier for a compact desktop system that'll make you want to spend more time just listening.

Versatile placement in your living room, bedroom, or office

The P4s work great in just about any audio setup. Mix and match them with any other pair of Audioengine speakers to create a killer surround sound system in your living room. Or use them in a stereo setup in your den, bedroom, or home office. They'll sound great sitting on stands, on a bookshelf, or mounted on a wall using the integrated threaded inserts.

    Features

Full-Range Sound: Each of the Audioengine P4s has two drivers; a 3/4" silk dome tweeter and a 4" Kevlar woofer. The front ported cabinets offer accurate bass down to 58 Hz.

Construction: The cabinets are built using 3/4" MDF with internal bracing. Internal sound-damping material reduces unwanted reflections inside the cabinet. The cabinet edges are rounded to reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. The speakers are hand finished and have high-density foam isolation pads on the bottom for placement flexibility.

Binding Posts: The 5-way binding post input terminals are located at the top rear of the speaker cabinet; they will accept spade connectors, pin connectors, single and dual banana plugs, and bare wire up to 10 gauge.

Mounting: The speakers can be wall or ceiling mounted with an optional bracket (not included). There are two 1/4"-20 threaded inserts on the back of each speaker, aligned vertically, approximately 1-3/4" apart. There is also one 1/4"-20 threaded insert on the bottom of each speaker, in the center.

    Very musical

Written By WDH, Frederick, MD on Tuesday, January 22, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looked high and low for great near-field desktop speakers for music. Tried the B&W MM-1s, and they were nice, but there was no way to easily add a sub (and they need a sub). Saw a snarky answer on one of the boards to just buy an amp, a couple speakers, and a sub, and I thought why not? So, I have these hooked up with the NS-22 amp, a Klipsch SW308 sub (crossed over at about 115 Hz), and a SoundBlaster Z. My desk faces into the room, so my speakers don't get any extra bass from a rear wall (a shame, because without that, the P4s don't really kick much below 70 Hz). No grills makes these boys look very cool. The MM-1s were all class, but these look like the business end of elegant... classy in a tougher way. They're heavy with a very nice black satin finish. At night, they almost disappear. Packaging was first rate, with cloth bags and all. I was almost expecting to find a bottle of Dewers in there somewhere (sadly, I didn't). So, how do they sound? Well, they sound great. The soundstage is *almost* as good as the MM-1s, but they're not quite as clinical, sounding a little warmer - which I prefer. I play these at low volumes, but they can get loud. Leaning the speakers back with the optional stands helps bring out the highs a bit more. I like it a little better... try leaning them back on a stack of CDs first if you want. The Klipsch is a good compliment to these. I returned the MM-1s because I can't get the full spectrum from them. But these are keepers.
    Pros:
Good soundstage. They look great. They have amazing presence with quality recordings. Pair 'em with a good sub, and OMG! They sound warm with clear highs and a beautiful midrange that brings out strings and vocals. You will look sexier just being in their presence. You'll also smile more.
    Cons:
They're very transparent, so you'll notice it when an album is poorly mastered / recorded. And you'll notice the sub-par nature of poorly encoded mp3s. They do well on bass FOR THEIR SIZE, but you won't get much bass from a 4" woofer; it's just physics.

    Small speakers... HUGE sound

Written By Oscar1, Houston, TX on Thursday, October 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are some of the best im sure anyone can get at a low price for such great quality. Yes they are on the small side, BUT, they sure can can make big sound. I would recommend these for near field system. Dont expect to put these in a big room and for them to sound like tower speakers, be realistic too. But for a small room they are great. They fill the room pretty well. The thing i loved the most was the very clean bass. I just came from some polk speakers that had a boomy bass and was just so annoying. These have fluent and clean bass that is enjoyable at any volume. Plus they are front ported so that gives them a big advantage. GREAT speakers that i highly recommend.
    Pros:
-Great Bass -Great size -Front Ported -Great Finish
    Cons:
    -NONE

    Nice speakers

Written By MastaDisasta, Smyrna, TN on Thursday, March 10, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needed some good speakers for my pc and I tried 2 other pairs that just didn't
do it for me. The Audioengine 2's and then the Bose Companion 3 and then I
finally settled on the Audioengine P4's. But since they are passive I needed an
amp, so I pulled out my old Onkyo receiver. The Audioengine 2's were great, so
great they almost had the low's you wanted to hear, so close that it drove me
crazy, so I went with the Bose. Had the low's but was missing everything else.
So I went with these, and they are great. Crutchfield was so awesome, they had
no issue returning the Bose and Audioengine2's for these. Thanks Crutchfield for
the great customer support, and by the way your service tech helped me setup my
old Onkyo receiver. Best Customer support I have ever experienced!! Telling all
my friends and family about my experience.
