Our take on the P.I.E Aux Input Adapter For GM

by Tim Sprinkle

Got a portable music player? Then you probably know that a direct connection to your vehicle's radio will give you the best possible sound quality. The Precision Interface Electronics GM12-AUXv2 adapter lets you convert the CD changer port on your General Motors factory stereo into an auxiliary input, suitable for connecting an add-on satellite radio tuner, portable music player, or other audio source.

Just connect the power and ground leads, plug the 12-pin data connector on the adapter cable into the factory radio's changer port, connect your portable player to the adapter's RCA inputs, press "CD" on the radio, and go! This adapter uses the CD changer port — once connected, you can't use a changer with your factory radio. Warranty: 90 days.

Note: Please enter your vehicle information then check the Installation Details to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. You can also call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 for help.

Features

Overview: DPX Auxiliary input converters by PIE (Precision Interface Electronics) are designed to convert the CD Changer port of the OEM radio (with CD Changer controls) into an auxiliary input. Devices such as Satellite Radios, DVD Players, VCRs, MP3 Players, and Game Systems can be added the the OEM radio without an FM Modulator. DPX Technology maintains full function of all factory steering wheel and rear seat controls.

Compatibility: The GM12-AUXv2 allows you to add an auxiliary input to the factory radio in select General Motors vehicles. The adapter plugs into the factory system using the supplied cable. Please, use the Crutchfield Car Selector to determine if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

CD Changer/XM Radio: In nearly all cases the factory CD Changer, XM Radio, or rear seat entertainment system (when present) will work in combination with this auxiliary input adapter.

Mounting: The adapter can be secured to any flat surface.

Connections: The adapter has two RCA (left and right audio) inputs on one side. On the other side of the adapter is a rectangular 10-pin jack that interfaces with the supplied cable. The adapter end of the cable has the 10-pin plug and the other end has a 12-pin plug which connects to the factory radio. The included cable also has a third plug to accept the harness previously plugged into this 12-pin jack on the factory radio. In addition the OEM style harnesses, there are two individual wires that must be connected to constant 12 volts and ground respectively.

Aux input

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As I prepped by removing the dash, it wasn't hard to remove. After figuring out how I was going to run the cabling, next was connecting the power/gnd. After looking around, I noticed that you could use the hot-wire (from the wiring harness) from the radio, and I connected the GND to the back of the radio. Overall, not a bad install.
Pros:
Made my system in my truck sound as good as XM Radio, (Pandora, TuneIn Radio apps). I may be 43 years old, but it made me feel like a kid again by added audio equipment to a vehicle and turning it up because it sounded so good.
Cons:
As I was installing the GND on the back of the radio, I lost a screw that held the radio chassis together, so I used another one, but hung tight to that one, LOL.

Excellent Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing was a piece of cake to put in. I have a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer LT with the Bose system and the last thing i wanted to do was replace that beast with an aftermarket stereo, but unfortunately it didnt come with an AUX port. Thats when i found this... It fits perfectly and it works with XM (it actually uses the XM band function, but XM still works if you are not using your MP# player). In my case the only part that needed thinking was figuring exactly which wire to tap into, but in the TB's case it was the top orange wire on the harness, and for the ground i just found a bolt in the stereo enclosure itself and hooked it to that. I would highly recommend this to anyone. And as always Crutchfield gave me excellent service before i even purchased the product!!
Pros:
Great quality sound easy to install Crutchfield customer service
Cons:
None yet

Great way to get AUX into your car (2003 GMC Yukon)

Written By Zambini, Santa Cruz, CA on Monday, February 13, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't forget the butt connector! (or some way to splice into your +12v line).

Installation was pretty simple, just took a bit to find the right way to power it. Works great and it was definitely better than replacing my entire head unit (cheaper, and I got to keep my head unit!).
Pros:
Inexpensive, easy to install
Cons:
Took a bit of research to find out how to power it.

2006 Pontiac Grand Prix

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Would have been great if it had worked. Reviews were insightful but none that pertained to me or my car. Crutchfield Staff was an excellent help, and their tech support was the only thing taht was keeping my from extracting the hair from my own head.

Would have been 5 stars if the product description would have informed me that in order for the adapter to work in my car, I need to have a car dealer (or a 3rd party car audio retailer) "activate my XM controller" in my OEM stereo. Unfortunately, the 5 dealerships that I was willing to drive to had absolutely no idea what I was talking about.

It just works - 2003 Chevrolet 2500HD w/Bose

Installed in a 2003 Chevrolet 2500HD with Bose+Aux - works great! you have to toggle the seek button back and forth to switch between XM and Aux input and sometimes this takes a couple of trys. Works fine with iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S as source. Does not require you to disable internal CD player.
Pros:
easily adds Aux/iPod input to factory Bose system.
Cons:
none so far - hope it lasts

Junk

Written By DPM, AZ on Sunday, December 18, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First one I bought quit working after about a 2 years. It produced nothing but garbled static and distortion out of just one speaker. I figured it lasted a good while, so I bought another one to replace it, and it only lasted 5 months before ending in the same fate. Should have known the quality was poor since they only warrantee the product for 90 days. Will not buy a third. Stay away from this product and just buy an aftermarket radio that's already got the iPod hookup integrated.
Pros:
Works great...until they break.
Cons:
They don't last. Poor quality product. Purchased two in the last two years and both are now dead. Will not buy a third.

GREAT Interface

Written By Dave, Cheyenne, WY on Thursday, December 08, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

'07 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. Factory; Monsoon system, On-Star, XM , 6-disk in-dash CD player. Also have steering wheel controls, and steering wheel pattle shifters. Only thing missing factory litteraly was the NAV, and the garage door opener (LOL). Installation from start to finish took only 30 minutes. Left jumper in the 'XM position'. Removed a screw from the radio to ground to, 'T-tapped' in to the constant orange wire for radio for power. Ran the phono jack down and cut a small hole in the top-back-right side of the cubby to have cable come out. Seek up then down relatively quick and it's 'ON', do it again and its 'OFF'. Shows that I am still listening to XM though. You have to 'turn it 'OFF' though for XM to work again, even if you turn vehicle off. Everything still works as well. Even if you cycle through other parts of the stereo if the Aux was 'ON' it will be 'ON' when you go back to XM. GREAT GREAT GREAT Product!!!!!
Pros:
Quick, SIMPLE, cost efective sollution!!! So that I can retain my factory system!!!
Cons:
Having to wait for the shipping.

It Simply Just Works!

Written By vondoom88, nowheresville,IL on Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Install was on a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix. I received this as a gift from my brother this year and the install was pretty easy. Hardest part was finding a 12v source and a good ground. Other than that straight forward plugs inline with the radios harness. add a 3.5mm to stereo rca cable and your all set.
Pros:
A simple solution to adding ipod/mp3 to your factory radio.
Cons:
Can't charge my ipod. Not a deal breaker for me.

This is a great product installed in 2005 Chevy Tahoe, Bose, in-dash 6CD changer, no XM. I was hooking up my Zune through the RSE DVD player, but now no wires hanging down and I can keep the factory radio look. I added a AUX-IN jack near the console to give my vehicle a finished appearance.
Pros:
Works as advertised. Able to keep factory radio and play Zune.

This product it's the best solution, do not use an FM transmitter if you have the option of using this instead. I'm a female and installed it myself, and that should tell you how simple it is to install. Sounds just as stereo CD quality. In my system sounds INSANELY clear since its on a 2004 Chevy Tahoe with Bose System....I wish I had known this product was around since 2005, could have saved hundreds I wasted with FM transmitters. Thank you for such great product and Crutchfield for carrying this reliable product. Your install instructions are flawless!!

'02 Pontiac Sunfire w/ Factory Monsoon System

Written By Daniel C, Raleigh, NC on Thursday, September 22, 2011
Installed in a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this product from Crutchfield so I could play my ipod through the factory stereo system, but all did not go as planned. The installation was extremely easy, tapped into factory harness for power and ground, plugged everything in and....nothing. Quadruple checked power and ground, moved the internal "short" peg to every different position per PIE instruction sheet and still nothing . Finally gave in and called tech support to find out that early to mid '02 Sunfires have a different radio that is not compatible with the PIE aux adapter. I just wanted to post this so that anyone with my same vehicle hopefully calls tech support to find out if they have the compatible radio or not before purchasing; when I was searching through the reviews I didn't see one '02 Sunfire that had posted. But, Crutchfield's friendly staff have been completely understanding and are doing an exchange for an aftermarket Kenwood receiver as I type. I can't speak for the products performance (although if Crutchfield puts their name behind it, you can rest assure its good quality), but Crutchfield's awesome staff get five stars from me!

Awesome, way to easy!!!! Took me about half hour to install. Bought some rca to mini audio jack, hooked up my smartphone or ipod and....walla, good to go! The sound is excellent in my truck. Deep bass from the bose system. The power and ground wires were a breeze to splice in to the factory harness.
