Great Sound, Crisp Highs and Clear Mids, Durability Questionable

I got these speakers in December 2012 and they have been installed for 4 months now. I installed them myself with the Crutchfield included factory wire harness adapter. For a 4x6 speaker, they have a fair amount of Bass but nothing spectacular. The woofer excels at producing clear Mids and the tweeters produce very crisp but not harsh Highs. Cymbals sound spectacular and the snare in the drum kit is more pronounced now. I love them. Unfortunately, the driver side speaker has developed a crackling just 3 months after install. It was intermittent at first and now it is constant. I have taken the door apart 4 times, checked to make sure the wiring is good, there is no loose internal door components, and that the dust cover is securely fastened to the door. Nothing has helped. I have contacted Polk and they will be replacing the speaker under warranty once I have the time to remove it and send it to them. I will write another review once I receive the replacement speaker and install it. These speakers are driven by a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X395 so I know they have not been overpowered. I also do not turn the volume above 30 (Max 35) and have not heard any distortion or peaking in any of the other speakers. Makes me wonder what would happen if I drove these with an amp to their rated 50 watts. Overall a GREAT speaker, just with questionable reliability but FANTASTIC customer service from Polk.

Plastic Frame, Lacks much bass for Lows, Questionable Reliability

Great Jeep Wrangler in dash replacement

Great looking replacement for your in dash speakers for the Wrangler that sound decent. I wish they would have a little better quality sound but that may be due to my older head unit or by contact with the dash frame. I need to investigate this further... Would give 5 stars if it fit a little better.

Pros:

Looks great and sounds decent

Cons:

Not a exact fit; lots of mounting options, you just have to choose which works best for you and make it fit.

Good fit, average sound

Replaced factory set of rear speakers in Silverado using stock amp. Good improvement in mid/high response but degraded bass respose. Factory speakers actually reproduced lower frequencies than these. Fit well in stock locations without modification. Plan on replacing them again so I can get some bass.

Pros:

Decent basket construction, ok mid/high sound, do not distort easily.

Cons:

No bass at all, none, even at low volumes. Other speakers available for less cost that perform as well.

Perfect for Sliverado Regular Cab

Installed these in the rear pillar of an 05 Silverado 2500 HD Regular Cab, along with some MM651's in the front door and I think these outperform the MM651's. Nice upgrade from the OEM's.

Pros:

Nice clarity, fit pretty well, and were easy to install.

After a year....no complaints

These speakers have nice sound. I think they sound better than the regular db461's that I replaced. The only thing is that you have to drill new holes for mounting.

The Plastic Frame is Junk

I would give this product a 0 if I could. I just insatllaed these 3 weeks ago in the back door of my 2011 GMC Sierra. In all fairness I did not buy these from Crutchfield. Installation was easy, they fir well and sounded good. Today I had a short in the spreakers, thought a wire may have dropped offf, couldn't be more wrong. Whe I took the inside door panel off the drivers side door I could not believe what I saw. The entire frame had broken around each screw. There was nothing holding the speaker in place at all and the rest of the frame had also been destroyed. Then I took the passenger panel off and that speaker was even worse. The frame around the woofer had actually broken along with the rest of the frame. I have a stock head unit and no amplifier. I do like to play the music loud but come on, this is absolutely unacceptable.

Pros:

Fit was good, sounded good when lasted.

Cons:

Frames are plastic and just junk.

Nice speakers decent range. Not the punch of larger products but for the space provided these units deliver. With the special 'half off w/ qualifying purchase, this was a great deal. I am verry happy.

Pros:

Easy install, nice cear sound, water resitant.

Cons:

not the biggest bass punch, would not push these too hard

Clear precise sound is my opinion of this product. A driver of this size is not capable of delivering a lot of bass, but neither is any other driver of this size. If you want bass you need to add an appropriate subwoofer. As to the value, I cite the law of diminishing returns. You would have to spend a lot more for an incremental increase in quality.

These were very easy to install. Instructions were great as were the speaker harness connectors which were included. I can just about turn the radio all the way up with no distortion. Excellent upgrade from my worn out factory speakers.

Pros:

Easy to install, good bang for the buck.

Cons:

Be careful with the GM plastic on a regular cab. I broke mine during removal.

01 Silverado Ext. Cab

OK speakers at best. They sound good but are not durable. I have them hooked up on my JL amp with 75 watts RMS and never turn it up past 30% max volume (about 25 watts I figure). Under these conditions I have now blown out 3 sets of these in about 1 and 1/2 years. I spoke to Polk about this and they directed me to get a specific capacitor which I did and I installed this. It helped some but I still blew out another set (the 4" driver voice coil seizes up and then its one big tweeter). Added an electronic crossover to eliminate lows that Polk engineers stated blew the speakers and that helped my last set last for about 6 months but they blew out this week. At least Polk has been very good about replacing them for free every time, until now. I need to find something else for the rear doors in my Silverado ext. cab. Oh and the first sets plastic mounting frame fell apart (disintegrated), likely due to Arizona's hot dry summers, which caused the speakers to fall out of the doors.

Pros:

Easy to install. Nice sound if you run them at about 10 - 15 Watts RMS and no more. Good looks.

Cons:

Not durable. Dont handle the power they state they can (blow out very easy at about 25 watts RMS). Make sure to get an electronic crossover or capacitor to block bass in order to help extend their life if hooking them to an Amp.

I replaced these speakers with my old 75 corvette originals in the dash. I had to make simple mods to fit but they went in perfect. the sound is amazing. I was listening in my garage after I put them in and my neibor 3 doors down thought I had put my stereo speakers outside. I have an alpine set up and I have not had the problem with the bas. Great speakers great price.

Speakers were shipped free and ariived the same week I ordered them. I installed them in my YJ Wrangler alomg with a new head unit. They sound great. They are compact and powerful. I am satisfied with the service and the product.

Pros:

Sounds great. Free shipping and timely arrival

Cons:

Fit in the space but had to drill new mount holes. Universal holes were not universal enough for Jeep Wranglers. Everything fits fine with a little tweekadge.

I installed Polk Audio db461p in the dash of my 96 S10 the are hands down the best 4x6 speaker I've ever heard. I'm running them off my deck . Cristal clear highs, good mids, not really meant for lows though but that's what subs are for. I did need to modify the passengers side speaker cover because it wouldn't fit back on (just had to cut the very corner of the speaker bracket off doesn't effect the speaker at all). I planed on installing tweeters as well but after installing these I realized I don't need them. The highs or more then enough to go with my 12" Kicker CompVT subwoofer.

Bought these speakers to replace rear 4"x6" factory ones. The speakers can
handle some power and have a good response, you can tell the separate
tweeter/woofer design makes a difference. That being said, the high's are a
slightly muted and the lows are a bit suppressed, but with 4"x6"'s, one should
not expect a big bass. All-in-all, a quality set of speakers for the price.
