Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for Ford

by Zak Billmeier

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your Ford, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA Spec's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to your compatible Ford factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different play lists right from the radio. USA Spec's Direct Mode lets your passenger control the tunes using the iPod itself. The interface charges most iPods while connected, and you'll get a handy auxiliary input for connecting an MP3 player or another source.

You'll get a handy auxiliary input for connecting other sources, such as a satellite radio or another type of MP3 player.

    Features

Overview: The USA Spec PA15-FORD2 iPod-to-Ford car stereo interface allows a compatible iPod with a dock connector to be connected to and controlled by the factory radio (with Satellite Radio tuner) in select Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles. If you vehicle is not equipped with a Sirius Satellite Radio tuner, the USA SPEC PA15-FORD1 (581P15FRD1, sold separately) must be used.

Vehicle Compatibility: This interface enables a compatible iPod to exist with a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury factory radio (with Satellite Radio tuner) and control your iPod via the vehicle's factory radio and steering wheel controls, or the iPod's click-wheel/touch-screen. Non-navigation radios must have both Aux and Text buttons for the PA15-FORD2 interface to function properly. Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

iPod Compatibility: The PA15-FORD2 is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury factory radio (as of 10/11/2012):

    Notes:

    • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

iPod Control: The USA Spec PA15-FORD2's on-board software translates commands from your factory radio's Sirius control into commands that will control your connected iPod. There are two modes of controlling your iPod:

    • Folder Mode: Access four folders (Playlist, Artist, Album, All Songs) on your iPod from your factory radio's Sirius Satellite Radio presets 1-4.
    • Direct Mode: All the controls on the iPod are unlocked, giving you total control remotely; the radio still has basic controls; track up, track down, fast forward, and fast reverse. Direct Mode is accessed from your factory radio's Sirius Satellite Radio preset 5.

Note: Direct Mode allows you to play music streamed from Pandora.com and Sirius/XM Online from a connected iPhone or iPod touch through your factory radio.

iPod Text: The Artist name, song title album name, and playlist text can be displayed on the radio when using the Folder control mode.

Battery Charge: The PA15-FORD2 charges iPod battery when connected. Charging stops automatically half-an-hour after your iPod is paused.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA15-FORD2, there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. The aux input is enabled by setting the DIP switch #1 on the side of the interface adapter to the "On" position. The auxiliary source is accessed on the factory using Satellite Radio preset 6.

    Not great!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product works okay if you don't care what song you are on. After installing this item I wanted to change songs using my seek button on the steering wheel of my truck and unfortunately it skips to the next playlist instead of the next song on the playlist. The whole reason I was purchasing this product was for integration with the options on the truck so I wouldn't have to replace the factory stereo. Crutchfield's customer service was excellent and allowed me to return the product for a full refund. I highly recommend Crutchfield but do not recommend this ipod interface.
    Cons:
Integration into the factory system is a joke. I don't know anyone who wants to switch playlists from the steering wheel control.

Purchased as a gift for my daughter... She saw a similar unit on another web site... I returned it to Crutchfield as the USA Spec unit does not support "bluetooth" as the other unit does.... My daughter wanted the bluetooth connectivity.
    Pros:
    Price and crutchfield
    Cons:
    No Bluetooth

    Installed in a 2006 Ford F-150
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was a simple do it yourself in my 06' F150. One hitch. After I plugged everything in my satellite radio was disabled. Called tech support - quick answer - unplug the factory lead - wait two minutes - turn on the ignition - plug in the factory lead - perfect. Works just like it should.

    Great for a F150

Written By xcape, Austin, TX on Saturday, September 10, 2011

Just put this in my truck.. No tools were needed at all.. 1 - Snapped of the panel that surrounds the radio (be careful with the pins.. ease it off from the top down) 2 - The Sirius receiver is right below the radio with the cable connections facing you. 3 - Unplugged the Sirius and put the USA Spec in line, 4 - Ok, may be a bit ghetto, but I just wedged the USA Spec between the radio and the Sirius, it hasn't made any noise in the past 7 days, but we'll see.. 5 - Ran the iPod cable out through the driver (right foot) kick plate, it pops right off when pulled, and snaps back on.. Ran the cable down the between the seat and console and done.. You can improve your install as you'd like but this is fine for me.. All functions work right from the radio..NICE.. Only thing it doesn't do is allow you to hear the phone or voice mail thought the radio.. its not a speaker phone.. You'll have to do true bluetooth for that...

    Finally, something that works.

This guy installed in my 05 Focus just as advertised. Everything fit and it worked
perfectly. A few easy steps - disconnect battery, remove face plate (easy, pops right out),
remove radio (4 screws), connect the harness and gizmo as illustrated (90 seconds),
put the radio back in, put the face plate back on, reconnect the battery and that's it. I was
amazed at how easy it was! I highly recommend this product if you have a 05 to 07
    Focus.

Music and Books on the go

    Installed in a 2006 Ford F-150
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What's to say, easy to install and easy to use. In my 2006 Ford F-150 I didn't even need to use any tools. All access panels were snap off and back on. I use this with an iPhone and when I plug it in, it starts playing my audiobook right where I left off. The navigation of the iPhone menus using my factory radio is easy and displays all the information I could care to see. By using the preset radio buttons you can switch between playlists and artists easily. There is a direct mode (radio preset 5) available so I can use the iPhone touch screen. I canceled my satellite radio and in direct mode, I can stream Pandora directly to my radio. The Sound Is GREAT!
