Denon

Our take on the Denon AH-C300 Urban Raver™

by David Brown

Big bass, small headphone

Denon AH-C300 Urban Raver

Powerful bass doesn't have to come from a bulky, on-ear headphone. With Denon's AH-C300 Urban Raver in-ears, those big beats and deep lows won't get left behind. Toss those stock earbuds and let the AH-C300 give your favorite hip-hop, rap, techno and dance tracks the low-end frequency response they need to come alive. Each earpiece features two parallel 11mm drivers to deliver jaw-dropping bass in a form-fitting headphone you can bring anywhere. A wide assortment of ear tips and stabilizers let you mix and match to find a comfortable fit that will seal in sound while blocking external noise.

Control your iPod®, iPhone® or iPad® with the AH-C300's control wheel on the right earpiece. Answer calls and control music playback with a simple push of the center button. Turn the control wheel as easily as you would a stereo knob to adjust the volume of calls and music. And don't look for a microphone on the cord — it's built right into the earpiece for clear conversations wherever you are.

Get interactive with the Denon Club app

Get more out of your listening experience with the free Denon Club app for Apple® and Android™ devices. Denon Club features custom EQ and simple music library integration, so you can fine-tune the sound of your headphones for any kind of music. Features

Drivers: The AH-C300 Urban Raver in-ear headphones feature Denon's patent-pending Double Air Compression Driver technology. Each earpiece feature two 11mm drivers mounted in parallel to give you excellent bass response, crystal clear sound, and improved SPL.

Compatibility: The headphones feature integrated Apple-compatible controls and microphone on the right earpiece. These can control music operation on compatible Apple devices and conduct phone calls or perform voice recognition activities. The AH-C300s are compatible with iPod nano (4th gen or later), iPod classic (120GB/160GB), iPod touch (2nd gen or later), iPod shuffle (3rd gen or later), iPhone (3GS, 4, and 4S), and iPad. Audio is supported by all iPod models, as well as virtually any device with a 3.5mm minijack output.

Mini Control Wheel: Denon's patent-pending Mini Control Wheel gives you control of your iPod, iPhone, and iPad. The volume can be raised or lowered incrementally with a twist of the wheel. While listening to music, you can control playback by pressing the center of the wheel for play/pause, next track, previous track, fast forward, and fast reverse. Phone controls include answer/end a call, switch to an incoming or on-hold call, put a call on hold, or decline a call.

Headphone Cable: The headphones have a 55" double-coated cable with a 3.5mm miniplug terminal. The clear, low-friction outer coating helps keep the cable from getting tangled. A 3.5mm-to-1/4" adapter is included for listening to home components with a full-sized headphone output.

Comfortable Fit: The AH-C300 Urban Raver headphones are designed for comfort and fit. After studying over 4000 pairs of ears, Denon's engineers designed the earpieces to account for subtle differences in ear placement, ear canal size, head size, and jaw depression. The headphones come with multiple pairs of ear tips so you can choose the pair that gives you the best fit and performance: 4 pairs of silicon ear tips (XS, S, M, L), 3 pairs of double solid silicon ear tips (S, M, L), and a pair Comply Foam ear tips. For an even more secure fit, the headphones include 3 pairs of ear stabilizers (S, M, L), designed to fit snugly inside the bowl of your ear.

Included Accessories: In addition to the ear tips, the headphones come with a zippered, embossed protein leather case with a detachable carabiner so you can hook the case onto a belt loop, a purse strap, or a backpack.

Denon Club App: The Denon Club Smartphone Application for iPhone, iPad, or Android is designed to enhance your listening experience. It includes a real-time spectrum analyzer, and allows you to use any of 10 EQ presets, or create, store, and share your own custom EQ curves. The app gives you access to song lyrics, and create and store custom playlists. With the TuneIn Internet Radio service, you can listen to any of over 50,000 internet radio stations.

Heavy Bass without sacrificing much mids and highs

Written By AudioVideoGeek, Northern Virginia on Wednesday, December 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bass-heavy headphones such as Dr. Beats, Soul by Ludacris, and Soul Republic tend to exaggerate bass or induce additional bass at the sacrifice of mid-range and highs. Not so with the Denon AH-C300 Urban Raver (albeit a corny name for an otherwise wonderful product). The bass is most certainly there without being overly exaggerated, courtesy of dual 11mm drivers in each ear. Among many earbuds and headphones that I own, I will compare my AH-C300 to my Denon AH-C560R earbuds and my Sony xba-4 earbuds. Sound used for testing: lossless wav music files from Black Eyed Peas, Pink, Michael Buble, Bond, and the like. For AH-C560R, the bass was decent with mids and highs a bit muddled and distorted. For AH-C300, the bass was strong and clean, and music was overall louder at same volume, with the mids and highs coming across much more clear and cleaner than from the AH-C560R. For Sony xba-4, the bass was cleaner and tighter the Denon AH-C300, but not as as deep as the Denon AH-C300, (maybe due to balanced-armature drivers vs traditional drivers found in the AH-C300), with mids and highs cleaner and clearer than the AH-C300. Conclusion: If you are a music purist with classical and jazz in your music library, I recommend the Sony xba-4. However, if you mainly listen to dance, hip-hop, electronic, top 40 hits, I recommend the Denon AH-C300 (once properly fitted after driving yourself crazy doing so), without sacrificing much mids and highs.
    Pros:
Great bass w/o sacrificing clarity of mid-range and high sound. When comparing side-by-side with bass-inducing headphones from non-traditional audio electronics companies, you will hear a world of difference, picking up the nuances of musical instruments that you would have thought non-existent with other high-on-marketing, low-on-audio-quality earbuds. Built quality is excellent, much better wire housing than more flimsy looking, but much more expensive Sony xba-4.
    Cons:
Big, may not be suitable for those with small ears. Tough to get fitted despite numerous options provided for earbuds and ear stabilizer. Lack of comfort with ear stabilizers mounted. A bear to get it properly fitted. Needed to watch several online videos to determine proper placement of ear stabilizers because user guide was useless.

    Denon AH-C300 Urban Raver™

Written By Paul, Statesville NC on Saturday, October 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love these phones! I previously purchased a pare of kliptch X7i and was very disappointed. I like a lot of base and the Denon AH-C300 do not disappoint, the kliptch were sorely lacking in that department, and the cable on those phones are some of the noisiest I have ever encountered. Every slight move of my head turned into an overpowering crunch in my ears. So I returned them, Crutchfield has a great return policy, and purchased these Denon phones. I have been a loyal fan of Denon since the early 90s. They make great products that sound amazing and are fairly affordable. If you want a great sounding in-ear head phone with beautiful low end, these are the headphones for you!
    Pros:
Nice packaging. When I saw the box they came in I knew I purchased something good. Really like the leather carrying case. It holds the phones and my iPod.
    Cons:
    Nothing yet
