What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics G312-44

by Dominic Devito

The G3 Series subwoofers from Boston Acoustics incorporate innovative technologies with advanced materials for low-frequency firepower that'll enhance any type of music. The patented RadialVent® cooling system shunts heat away from the voice coil, and the ultra-rigid chassis provides a rugged platform for high-powered bass.

The 12" G312-44 dual voice coil subwoofer features a rigid copolymer woofer cone and a large compressed foam surround. Extended cone excursion lets these subs pound out ultra-low notes, while the 2-1/2" voice coils handle 375 total watts RMS for bass that hits hard. Boston's unique SureSet™ fuse configuration makes it easy to switch the total impedance between 2 and 8 ohms, and it protects the voice coils from overload when the music is cranked.

This multi-purpose sub works well in all sizes and types of enclosures. You can install this sub with Boston's GTR Tunable Radiator for a big boost in bass level without a large enclosure. The gasket allows for standard and inverted mounting so you can get creative with your installation.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most 2-channel car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation. Most mono amps are stable down to 2 ohms.

    Features

Chassis: The Boston Acoustics G3 series high-performance subwoofers are built upon a rigid chassis. It features the patented RadialVent cooling technology which directs airflow around the 2-1/2-inch 4-layer voice coil for increased power handling.

Materials: The G312-44 woofer has a co-polymer woofer cone with a raised dustcap and a large compressed foam surround. The wrap-around gasket gives you a good seal whether you top-mount or bottom-mount the woofer.

SureSet: The speaker terminals are equipped with two 7.5-amp ATC fuses for selecting between series or parallel voice-coil operation. When both fuses are used, the woofer is configured for parallel operation, and the woofer's impedance is 2 ohms. When one fuse is used in the center slots, the woofer is configured for series operation, and the woofer's impedance is 8 ohms. There is no need to change the position of the speaker wire in order to switch between parallel and series wiring. The fuses also provide voice coil protection under transient conditions such as accidental momentary overdrive. Use of the standard automotive style fuses allows you to quickly service the woofer in case a fuse is blown during usage. Note: The fuses do not protect against voice-coil failure resulting from long term high power abuse.

Terminals: The woofer has rugged spring post terminals that accept up to 8-gauge bare wire or pin connectors.

Long Excursion: The woofer has a 2-3/4 inch peak-to-peak excursion for accurate deep bass output from a small sealed enclosure.

GTR Tunable Radiators: The G312-44 is compatible with the Boston Acoustic GTR Tunable Radiator (item number 065GTR12, sold separately). These passive radiators, when mounted in an enclosure with the G3 woofer, can produce increased bass output without added enclosure volume.

    Enclosure Recommendations

Sealed Enclosure: The ideal sealed enclosure for the G312-44 woofer is 1.0 cubic feet.

Ported Enclosure: The woofer can also be used in a 2.0 cubic foot ported enclosure with a 4" diameter x 13" long port (tuned to 34 Hz).

great sound from a small enclosure (sealed). i highly recommend BA because they put quality assurance at the top of their priority.
    Pros:
great sound from a sealed box.
    Cons:
make sure your amp can push it. it's stable at 8/4/2 ohms. i had to remove one of the fuzes to get the sound working.

    Great sound!

Written By Bill B., Boulder, CO on Wednesday, May 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this for about a month now and the more I use it the better the sound is! Great sound quality in my opinion, especially for the price. I have it in a sealed box with just a 300 watt amp right now which I'll upgrade to a 500 sometime. It hits hard and plays the lows really nice. I mostly listen to hip/hop and electronic/dubstep music, so far it sounds great with anything I play.
    Pros:
    Great value and sound
    Cons:
    Nothing special in looks

    Good Quality Sound

Written By JamesC, San Diego, CA on Tuesday, August 30, 2011

After a couple weeks of listening to this sub I have fallen in love. Out of the box I only liked it. It had stellar sound quality but lacked volume. From what I understand these subs must have their break in time. After about 15 hours of playtime, its volume finally started to match its sound quality. FYI I'm throwing about 500w RMS to it and have the box built to specs. This is a sturdy sub and plays pretty much everything I throw at it. I have to agree with one of the other reviewers that the bass that comes through the sub is directly related to the bass that the artist(s) put(s) in. Luckily for me most of the music I listen to is bass heavy. It handles dubstep, R&B, modern Rock, and metal very well. Even classical music sounds good and it doesn't overdo it like other subs do. It sounds like I'm sitting with a big orchestra. The only genre it has trouble with is 70's 80's music. You still get a good sound, but not that 80's kick drum bass that you hear in other systems (if you know what I'm talking about). All in all I believe this is an audiophile subwoofer and it's a bargain for the price.

    Boston Acoustics G312-44

Written By C.P., Georgia on Monday, August 01, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an absolutely awsome sounding subwoofer. It sounds really clean and accurate and plays all the bass notes just as the artist intended. I paired this woofer with the alpine mrp500 amp and this was a flawless combo for someone looking for exceptional sound quality, however I did return this unit because I realized that I prefer more of an spl subwoofer that will give me the big bass that I desire. Don't be mistaken, this sub has the potential to deliver big bass but only if the song and/or artist calls for big bass.
