    Features

    Overview: The iPod2car Interface allows you to control an iPod directly from your factory radio, in select vehicles. The iPod2car delivers CD quality sound directly into the factory system via the CD changer port and eliminates the use of RF modulators. The factory radio enables track selection and fast forward/rewind just like using a CD changer. In addition, the iPod2car allows you to keep full control of the iPod from the click wheel. The iPod2car also keeps the batteries in the iPod charged.

    Note: For all vehicles, you will have to disconnect any external CD changer, Cassette player, or XM tuner to install the iPod2car (these devices will no longer be operational once the iPod2car is installed).

    Vehicle Compatibility: The supplied harnesses are compatible with select 1998-2007 Toyotas (2006-2007 Toyotas will require harness modification), 2003-2005 Scions, 1998-2002 Isuzus, 1992-2004 Hondas, 1992-2002 Acuras, and 1999-2001 Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles.

    Note: Please use the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify compatibility with your vehicle.

    Vehicle Specific Harnesses: Depending on your vehicle, you will need to use one of the following supplied harnesses:

    • PXHHD1(Honda/Acura): One end of the harness connects to the iPod2car Interface and one end connects to the factory system. On the interface end, the cable has a clear rectangular 22-pin (8 pins present) female connector that plugs into the iPod2car Interface. On the opposite end, the cable has a blue rectangular 14-pin (8 pins present) female connector that interfaces with the factory system.
    • PXHTY3(Toyota/Isuzu): One end of the harness connects to the iPod2car Interface and one end connects to the factory system. On the interface end, the cable has a clear rectangular 22-pin (10 pins present) female connector that plugs into the iPod2car Interface. On the opposite end, the harness has the following connectors: clear rectangular 12-pin female connector, white rectangular 12-pin (11 pins present) female connector, and white rectangular 12-pin (11 pins present) male connector.
    • PXHCH2(Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Honda/Acura): One end of the harness connects to the iPod2car Interface and one end connects to the factory system. On the interface end, the cable has a clear rectangular 22-pin (8 pins present) female connector that plugs into the iPod2car Interface. On the opposite end, the cable has a round 8-pin male connector that interfaces with the factory system. 

    iPod Cable: The iPod interface comes supplied with a 12' black iPod cable that plugs into the hide-away interface module and then into your iPod's dock connector.

    iPod/iPhone Compatibility: The iPod2car Interface is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible Honda/Acura, Toyota/Isuzu, or Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge factory factory radio as of October 2011:

    Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the factory radio and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until an newer software update is available.

    Factory Radio Control of iPod: Using this interface, your factory radio will control the iPod as if it were a factory CD-changer. Operation will be done by using the same buttons you would use to control a factory CD-changer.

    Note: The iPod2car does not disable any functionality of your iPod. The interface  allows you to keep full control of the iPod from the click wheel. You can still browse files and change playlists on your iPod. You can also skip songs forward and backward from the iPod.

    Factory Radio Display During iPod Operation: The iPod2car Interface does not send any information from the iPod to the radio. This means that the disc and track numbers shown on the display will not reflect the song number on the iPod due to the complex nature of the music library.

    Factory Steering Wheel Controls: If your vehicle's steering wheel controls have the ability to select track and control the forward and rewind functions of your factory CD changer, then they will also control these same functions on the iPod.

    Programming the iPod2car: The interface has eight dip switches located on its side. Different vehicles require different switch configurations. Once you have determined the correct harness for your vehicle, you will need to program the iPod2car Interface. A Dip Switch Configuration Chart in the Instruction Manual tells which configuration is right for your vehicle.

    Note: The dip switches must be set before the interface is plugged into the vehicle.

    Installation Location: Most installations will require you to remove the factory radio in order to plug in the vehicle specific harness. Some vehicles may require you to connect the interface to a factory pre-run CD changer cable. The location of these CD changer cables will vary by vehicle. Some common locations of these cables are in the trunk, behind the glove box, and in or under a center console.

    Works, but cable doesn't hold up

    Product works well, and I like how you can control both your iPod/iPhone simply through the factory stereo. However, the connection that attaches to the bottom of the iPhone/iPod wore out in about 6 months and needs to be replaced. Unless you have an awesome stereo, I recommend putting your money towards a new head unit.

    Flimsy cable connection to ipod/iphone

    This device and the attached Master Sheet instructions are perfect examples of what depicts a great company with high standards for their customers. Works better than expected. A direct plug-in with uncompromising CD quality sound.

    This replaced the FM adapter that, as you know or you wouldn't be reading this, is simply a 'hiss' noise that was quick and easy to plug in. But this now, NOW, NOW, sounds great...change tracks with the radio head unit...charge the iTouch 4th Gen with no special adapter...easy to install.

    Plugged in to an 1998 Acura Bose unit in 15 min. for the first test, WOW. Another 45 min. was spent hiding the cords and securing everything properly (see CON). Believe me, well worth the time.
    Pros:
    The SOUND is very accurate. It DOES Charge my 4th Gen. iTouch WITHOUT any adapter, even though the chart states to use the Scosche PassPort. There are long enough cords to place your iPod anywhere, just leave the extra slack to allow you to use the iPod controls easily when necessary. The Master Sheet that comes with, has the instructions and pictures for YOUR car. It shows how to remove the trim bezels around the radio and where the screws are located for YOUR car. Great touch.
    Cons:
    Manufacturer - The DIN plug that goes into the back of the radio head unit is angled in the WRONG direction for my (or most) application. This plug is a press fit only and could have been manufactured with a 180 degrees opposite angle. You could offer this package with TWO different patch cords for the Honda/Acura line, each cord with the opposite DIN plugs. I had to remove the head unit several times to understand how to secure the plug (zip tie) to prevent coming unplugged during the install.

    Great Product

    I had installed a similar product (also acquired from Crutchfield)in a 2001 Volvo; when I bought my 2005 Tacoma adding the iPod connector was the first modification I did. The install in the Tacoma was even easier than the install in the Volvo; very straightforward, simple plug and play. The Tacoma also had room left behind the factory unit to stow the little control box, so everything is out of the way except for the actual iPod connector cable.

    The product works, providing the advertised features and functions. The only minor glitch is that occasionally on power on (car start) the iPod connects but doesn't start playing. I have to power the stereo on/off and then the iPod picks up from where it stopped.
    Pros:
    Easy Install, direct connect sound quality
    Cons:
    Cable management. No real way around this though, as the wired connection is what provides the sound quality.

    Well Worth The Money

    We bought this for our 2006 Toyota Camry with non-JBL stock radio and no CD changer,
    and it has been working wonderfully ever since we installed it. The sound quality is great.
    For our car, no soldering was required - just insulate a few wire ends, pry off the trim on
    the car dash, and unscrew a few screws to get the stock radio out to plug it in. The cable
    that plugs into the iPod is long enough to reach the back seat. The car did take a few
    minutes to recognize the adapter after it had been installed - on this particular stock radio,
    it can be accessed by pressing "DISC" when there is no CD inserted, since there are no
    CD changer controls. Everything needed to install the adapter was included in the kit
    (except some electrical tape), and the directions were clear and specific.

    Most of the functionality you get from a CD is present with the adapter. We can control the
    volume and song using the next/previous controls on the steering wheel, and the basic
    stock radio controls function correctly. It also charges my 1st gen iPod Touch.

    The adapter didn't get 5 stars because it is not perfectly integrated with the built-in
    controls. The time display for the song does not work correctly and the Random and
    Repeat functions that normally work for the CD changer do not work with the adapter.

    All in all, I am very happy with the purchase and the quality of the product, and would
    recommend this adapter to anyone looking for an iPod/iPhone adapter for their car.

    We put this in my son's 1999 Accord. It was easy to install and works great. You'll
    need to make sure the driven has access to the ipod as the controls don't work that well
    with the existing factory radio.

    Very easy to install. Does a great job of playing my iPod through my 2006 Toyota Tacoma factory installed stereo, but the only control I have is song forward/back through the CD track buttons. All other control must be done through the iPod itself. Also, when playing the iPod there is an annoying character flash on the radio that alternates between 1'00 and 2'00. I cannot make this stop or go away. On the positive side, the sound is great, much better than through an FM transmitter. Lastly, my iPod nano 5g, charges just fine from the supplied cable out of the box.

    The installation is easy. But you have to go to the manufacture's web site to get the DIP switch settings. There is limited functionality for controlling the iPod when it's connected. You can't navigate to different folders, for example. This limitation is a function of the factory radio, not the adapter. We use it for audio books so the limitation doesn't bother us.

    This connection is far superior to cassette or FM adapters as far as audio quality goes.

    Great interface for factory car stereo. Easy to install. I recommend reading
    the directions first as you need to download some information off the
    internet to configure the device prior to installation. Crutchfield includes
    details on how to dismantle the dash which was great. Overall, very
    pleased with the device. A little pricey for what you get, but overall I'm very
    happy to be able to listen to my ipod nano (3rd gen). DOES NOT work with
    iPhone 3GS. I knew that going in so I will have to wait till they come out with
    an adaptor. And crutchfield has amazing customer service. Will be buying
    from them again.

    annoying devise

    Not impressed. The instructions are confusing, so I got on crutchfields web
    site and found it to be not very clear as well. I got this installed in my 2005
    Toyota Matrix. The devise, just has too many flaws. The light that comes
    on to see the display on the factory stereo is blacked out during the night
    hours. In the daylight light hours the back light works. Bottom line you can
    not see anything on your stereo in the dark. Third flaw, just recently after
    having this devise for 5 plus months it has been contantly send the ipod
    touch into pause mode. VERRY annoying. For some reason it does not do
    this with an ipod nano but it does all the time with the ipod touch. Yet it
    will charge the ipod touch but not the ipod nano. Wierd
    gadget, I should have just got a stereo that has an Ipod connection.

    Not a car guy

    First let me say that I am far from mechanically inclined. Woodworking, electrical, plumbing, tree house building, sure, automotive maintenance absolutely not! We drive an older Honda Odyssey minivan (2003) which did not come with a mp3 audio jack and my wife has been forever jealous of the numerous cars I have purchased along the way for myself (yes, very selfish of me but she loves me anyway) that have a jack.

    I found this solution as an alternative to having it professionally installed and thought I would give it a try. After a mere 45 minutes the adapter was installed and working flawlessly! While it states it does work with the controls on the steering wheel, the functionality is really limited. It can go forward and back one song, nothing more. We tend to use playlists instead so there is really no reason to use the controls on the steering wheel.

    It is true that the new 3G iPhone will not charge with this accessory but given the choice I would rather have music and charge the phone separately. The sound quality is excellent, much better than the "FM radio station" alternative.

    The worst part of this installation was locating the radio code, that took us longer than the adapter's installation! I would recommend this to anyone in search of modern conveniences in an older vehicle. Also, like the other reviews said, find the dip switch settings online prior to installation, makes life a lot easier.

    '04 Corolla? No sweat!

    I bought this for my 18 year old son for Christmas. He had asked for an FM transmitter, but finding an open station in the LA/OC region is an ongoing problem as you drive throughout the area. After he opened presents, he immediately went online and downloaded his settings and found a site which told him how to remove the dash trim. Then, he went outside and installed the kit in his pajamas. He is ecstatic with the results. It works better than what he asked for and his friends are amazed that he installed it himself.

    I ordered this for my 2008 Tacoma and I received it within a couple of days. The box comes with 3 separate wiring harnesses so you have to select the specific one for the specific car model. This was difficult to do as the link on the instruction sheet was not working so I had to go to the peripheral website. I found the proper harness and the proper switches on the interface to switch on or off. The instructions provided were not descriptive at all and basically was biased towards having a "professional" install the device. Also, on the harness i used there ended up being 2 out of the 3 hook-ups that I didn't use, there was only one slot that fit one of the hook-ups. Sound quality is good but the seconds on my iPod don't match up to the radio display (the display just keeps fluctuating back and forth between 1 and 2) it's pretty weird. IT'S A GOOD PRODUCT JUST A LITTLE CONFUSING TO INSTALL AND HAS ONE OPERATIONAL FLAW.

    Not For Hybrids

    It was not evident to me or Crutchfield that the unit is not compatible with a Hybrid (Highlander in my case). I found out after reading the dip switch settings on-line. The Hybrid note was printed at the bottom of the Toyota section.

    The instructions that came with the unit indicated the dip switch settings were available at a specific web site. That site did not work. I had to go to the manufacturer's site and search for the dip switch settings. Navigating the Peripheral Electronics site was not intuitive. Using their car year/ make/ model search feature did not help find the dip switch settings.

    I was able to remove the dashboard trim plate around the radio and heater controls easily using an iPod battery replacement tool that I got with an iPod battery ordered on-line. It is a plastic lever with a wide, sharp hook at the end. The hook can be wedged in the space under the trim piece; since it's plastic it is less likely to scratch. Pushing on the non-hook end of the lever eases the trim piece away enough to get fingers underneath to gently pull the trim piece off the dash. You can then easily remove the six 10mm bolts that hold the assembly in the dash.

    Bottom line: I returned the unit to Crutchfield and am considering replacing the radio/ CD player/ cassette player.

    Not Much Help

    Installed in a 2006 Scion tC. Gives me access to the tracks only (9 thousand of them) and does not display any text information. You cant search by artist, nor can you jump forward with the folder button to choose different albums. The only function this buys you is "next track". I find myself looking down at my iPod just as much as if it were connected to the AUX input. This is exactly what I was trying to avoid. If you have no problem hitting "next" a few thousand times to get to the track you want (without seeing it) then this is the adapter for you.

    Wonderful
    I have a Scion xB 2005 with the factory radio. The directions that came with this were amazing. It was extremely easy to install. And everything works. It works with the radio, it charges, turns off, comes with a long cord. It's wonderful.

    The only downfall I had was with the dipswitches. I recommend calling or emailing Crutchfield to get your dipswitch config. The chart and online chart are not the greatest. At least for my Scion.
    If you are having troubles with low sound try turning on dipswitch 6.

    Buy this, it's great.

    Note for 2005 Tacoma owners

    If you are planning to install this in an '05 Toyota Tacoma with the factory CD changer, be aware that you only need to plug in one of the connectors on the applicable harness. Do NOT disconnect any cables from the factory stereo. Just plug the one cable that fits into the vacant slot in the back of the factory radio and you're done. This is a fine piece of equipment that works well and blows the doors off any FM transmitter. Also, when routing the cable from the adapter to the ipod, be very careful sticking your hands behind the glove compartment/radio. There are some very sharp edges which will happily shred the skin off of your fingers.
