What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the JBL GTO804

by Ken Nail

Got an urge to get the lows bumping? JBL GTO subwoofers may just fit the bill. They work great in sealed or ported boxes, so you'll get bass the way you like it. And these compact subs offer a lower profile than most subs so they fit into smaller boxes that save you space.

The GTO804 8" subwoofer sports a polypropylene cone, with a big rubber surround that allows plenty of cone movement without sacrificing control. A heavy-duty dustcap reinforces the cone for lows that kick without distortion. A special integrated vent keeps the sub's internal workings cool and improves power handling capability.

Highlights:

  • 8" 4-ohm subwoofer
  • polypropylene cone with Hi-roll rubber surround
  • power range: 50-200 RMS watts (800 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 30-400 Hz
  • sensitivity: 91 dB
  • mounting depth: 4-3/8"
  • sealed box volume: 0.30 cu. ft.
  • ported box volume: 0.60 cu. ft.
  • Recommended Q-Logic Box Type: 1
  • warranty: 1 year

    Features

Woofer Cones: The JBL Grand Touring Series woofers feature polypropylene woofer cones with a heavy-duty molded dustcap.

Hi-roll Rubber Surrounds: The woofers feature hi-roll rubber surrounds to provide exceptional cone-edge suspension and long-throw linearity with control and stability at the excursion limits.

Spider: The woofer's progressive spider provides better control at the excursion limits and reduces woofer distortion.

Shallower Design: The Grand Touring Series' new proprietary frame, unique in-board motor structure, and new cone design allow the woofer to be a full inch shallower than equivalent-sized models.

Terminals: The woofer features binding post terminals which can accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade lugs, and single banana plugs. Because of the spacing between the + and - terminals, it cannot accept dual banana plugs.

    More than I expected

Written By Anonymous, Wilmington OH on Friday, March 08, 2013

I wanted some more bass in my 89LX mustang. I didn't want something that would take up too much space and this sub had pretty consistent reviews. I am powering it with a Kicker ZX200.2 off of one channel for now. I plan to let it break in fully before I hit it with 200 watts. It is in a Sound Ordnance bass bunker with polyfil. The sub has a lot of range and really shines in the lows. Not something I expected from an 8" sub. It is very accurate and fast. I'm not sure I even want to run it at 200 watts. The quality I am getting with 100 is pretty satisfactory. Now if you are looking for serious bass that drowns out your highs and mids you should probably look elsewhere. This sub is for sound quality. Bass you hear more than feel. Great for any genre of music.
    Pros:
    Serious bang for your buck.
    Cons:
    You don't have one yet.

Definitely a quality product for little cash.
    Pros:
    Sound quality.
    Cons:
If installing in a Suburban with FACTORY 8in sub. You Must use longer screws. Was told it would fit in factory hole no problem. The magnet on subwoofer is much larger than factory therefore pushing it out further. When installing quarter kick panel back over sub be careful not to damage sub as it will be in the way now. Recommmend a bud to help.

The reason i bought this sub was because all the reviews were so good. a lot of people said it sounded like a 12". they were wrong. If you want something REALLY loud get something bigger. On a different note, it doesn't take up very much room and its not terrible for when it only has to hit for a short note, after that it gets kind of bogged down.

    Great little sub

Written By Kraig H, Round Rock, TX on Monday, October 18, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sub. I have it in a sealed box, pushed by an Alpine PDX-5. The sub is nice and tight, with great sound quality. I'd definitely recommend this
to anyone looking for an 8" sub. Plus, it's under $100!!! You can't get much better than that.

Make sure you give it a few weeks to break in. At first, mine wouldn't play very low. But after a few weeks, it really opened up. Now it sounds fantastic.
Definitely put a smile on my face.

Almost as loud as my twin 12 box with an 1800 watt amp pushing it. Put these little guys to
the test with a m1000 Alpine @ 2 ohms and wow . Rolloff is pretty severe below 50 hhz but
these are 8" speakers so I'm still impressed.

Sounds great in a .3 cuft mdf enclosure with polyfill. Great for the family car where you need more space and not excessive bass (even though it hits hard if you need it to.)

    This sub hits!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this sub to go inside a pre-fabbed plastic sealed box. I am pushing 150 RMS and 300 peak. This sub gets really loud before any distortion is heard. My car sounds like it has a 10" sub, but I am able to fit this in a much smaller space than a larger sub would take. My Jeep has amazingly loud, clean, tight bass without taking up much room. Great sub!

Unbelievable bass from an 8" sub

Written By Mike, Greenville, KY on Wednesday, November 25, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted more bass in my 1991 GMC regular cab truck. But, I was on a tight budget and wanted something small so I didn't have to sit up under the steering wheel. So, being on such a tight budget. I took the woofer out of an old Pioneer TS-TRX800 box. Unhooked the tweeter and replaced the sub with the JBL GTO804. It was a ported box and I wasn't expecting what I got from this little 8 inch sub. It hasn't even gotten broken in good yet and the bass is unbelievable and still getting better. This little sub puts out better bass than a lot of 10 inch subs I have had. If you are limited to an 8 inch Sub. This is the sub you want. I am gonna try the bigger JBL subs the next time I need a sub. If they are any better than this little 8. I know I won't be disappointed.

    great sub

Written By Jeff, San Diego, ca on Monday, March 02, 2009

wow this is a great sub fon an 8"I original had this sub in a ported box that someone gave me and I was not really all that happy with it. It was about as loud as the 6 in speakers in our other car. i had it in there for about 5 months but it was taking up too much space inside my f150 so i custom made a .3 cubic foot box that fits under the back seat. it got so much louder and sounds much better. i had no an 8 in sub could be so loud and i only have 150 watts rms. the sound quality is very good. I listen to a lot of metal and it plays the double bass flawlessly. When put in the right box, this sub will pound.

    Great sub

Written By Andy, State College PA on Monday, November 17, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

People crack me up getting low sensitivity subs, then they need a zillion watts to drive them. Due to space limitations in a 65 VW bug, I built a small box for this and its mounted under the rear seat. The amp only has about 200 watts and I have way more clean, tight bass than I can possibly use. So - to sum it up - great speaker, great size and better sound than I thought was even remotely possible. I love it so much that am duplcating this system in my next project car.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Subwoofer far exceeds my expectations. I built a 0.3 cu ft sealed enclosure and have about 350 watts RMS available. After tweaking the crossover and gain, I have a fairly linear response to at least 40 Hz, but am seeing 31 and 25 Hz on the RTA when playing FM radio stations (I never realized FM could carry those frequencies). This is the first sub I've built that truly rumbles instead of booms. I cannot believe this driver can sound so good for its price range. JBL still understands bass.

Installed in a .6 cu sealed custom box with a 200w RMS amp. This
subwoofer performs wonderfully and with a rich full sound from 30 to
150hz. I have it installed in a truck cab but think this thing could easily fill a
    larger area.

I had a Punch 8" under the back seat of my F-150 supercrew and was never happy with the bass. Crutchfield tech recomended this JBL and it was a good change. I have always been a Fosgate fan and even won a contest with some Fosgate 10's one time but this JBL is much better. For the F-150 supercrew owners the Qlogic 8" truck box fits perfectly under the back seat. It is a budget freindly choice for bass unless you have $500 to spend on the MTX thunderform.

Just got my sub in and was very impressed. I am a big fan of all jbl products and was not disappointed with this buy. I built my enclosure slightly oversized in a downfiring configuration. It has plenty of output for a sub in such a small box. Sounds more like a ten or a twelve. I bet four of these in say 1.5 cubes sealed would be awesome. Another A+ for jbl. Now how about my a3000gti?
