Alpine

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Alpine MRP-M650

by Ken Nail
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Outstanding audio performance — you expect it when the amp is an Alpine. Alpine's V-Power amplifiers supply the high level of performance you want without shaking loose too much of your hard-earned cash.

The MRP-M650 mono amplifier will power your subwoofer with 400 watts of power. Add a second sub and the MRP-M650 pumps out 600 watts — enough power for some seriously "good vibrations." The variable low-pass filter adjusts the frequency output to match your system, while the Bass EQ lets you dial in some extra boost on the lows. A subsonic filter eliminates inaudible, ultra-low bass notes for cleaner output.

The amp's machined-metal heatsink keeps the internal parts cool and distortion low even when you're cranking the volume. Gold-plated screw terminals and RCA connections resist corrosion that can degrade signal performance.

Highlights:

  • mono subwoofer car amplifier
  • 400 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (600 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms)

    Features

Power Supply: The MRP-M650 amplifier's power supply uses MOSFETs to convert DC battery voltage to the higher DC voltages needed for high power. It supplies positive and negative voltages around 0V, rather than around 6V as with conventional single-polarity power supplies. The result is higher power levels and a dynamic range wider by as much as 10dB.

Low Pass Filter: The amp is equipped with a 50-200Hz variable low-pass filter with a slope of 24dB/octave.

Subsonic Filter: This amp utilizes a 15Hz subsonic filter to eliminate super low frequencies that can rob power and damage speakers. The subsonic filter operates at all times, and cannot be turned off.

Bass EQ: The Bass EQ circuit provides a boost of 0-12dB at 50 Hz.

Inputs: The amplifier offers both line-level and speaker-level inputs for 2 channels. The supplied speaker-level input harness allows you to connect this amplifier to a receiver without preamp outputs, either aftermarket or factory.

Terminal Covers: The amp comes with two plastic covers that protect and insulates the RCA, power, and speaker connections. Four supplied machine screws attach the covers to the amplifier.

    Inputs and Outputs

    Left Side Of Amplifier:

    • GND (ground): Gold-plated terminal strip (0.34" wide)
    • Battery: Gold-plated terminal strip (0.34" wide)
    • Remote: Gold-plated terminal strip (0.34" wide)
    • Speaker Output: Gold-plated terminal strips for 1 speaker

    Right Side Of Amplifier:

    • Line Inputs: 1 pair of gold-plated stereo RCA jacks
    • Speaker Level Input: Molex plug input for supplied 8-pin harness

    Wiring Recommendation

Power Wiring: Because of the size of the terminals, only 8 gauge power and ground wire will fit. Only the Streetwires 8-gauge amp wiring kits contain the needed 60-amp fuse. If another amplifier wiring kit is chosen, the fuse should be upgraded to 60 amps.

    "CLEAN" INSTALL

Written By TRIPPLE _F_P, MILES CITY, MT on Wednesday, December 12, 2007

This amp delivers clean power. I am pushing 2 Infinity Kappa 102.7w 10's (50-350 rms) / (ran in parallel = 2ohm load). The amp delivers 600 rms @ 2ohms. I have the gain all the way up. Sounds great! But, if I had to do it all over, I would have went with the M850 mono. These are in a down firing sealed q-logic box (1.2 cf). It takes more power to push these subs than I thought. So, said, always go more power then you think you need, you can always turn the gain down!!! (vehicle-2004 F-150 super-crew) "by the way, my M450 & M650 fit nice under the seats, after cutting the my heater vents out." Very clean install!!

Note: Was shipped the wrong subs, and Crutchfield handled the issue with great care and promptness!!!! Will definitely do business again!!

    Absolutely Astonishing!

I am using this amp with a 12" Alpine Type-R sub in a 1.75 cubic foot enclosure and I could not ask for more. The amp is only turned up half way and it hits so hard you can really feel it in the chest. Alpine amps have always been known for putting out good clean power and this one certainly does it. I would highly recommend this amp. Also, it has a very classy and clean look to it, which is a plus as well.

    Alpine Powered - Do it!

Written By Bitwise, Las Veges, NV on Monday, October 08, 2007

Over the years I've installed several custom systems in several cars, all relatively high-end setups with component speakers, subwoofers, etc. Alpine amps have been used in the last three of them...and will continue to be used in any future setup. They are consistently underrated for output, super clean musically and high-quality throughout.

My current setup in a Mbz E430 consists of a AVIC-N3 (+XM,IPOD,+RearCam) driving a MRP-F450 and MRP-M650. The MRP-F450 is running in 4 channel mode to Polk dB component seperates on the corners, while the MPR-M650 is driving a Alpine SWR-1242 12" sub in a custom 1.25 cuft. enclosure in the trunk.

This system is super-loud and super-clean sounding. No one believes it's only a single 12" sub until I actually show them. It gets so _low_ and so _loud_ it's incredibly easy to get busted by the police if a cruiser happens to be within a half-mile or so :) Plus the free back-massage, acoustically pumped by the incredibly great MRP-M650/SWR-1242 combo, is always fun!

It's probably my favorite system I've ever built. The Pioneer AVIC-N3 with full DVD video action, IPOD 80G video & audio action, navigation, rear-view camera, XM Radio....what more could I want!

    Nice Amp

Written By Deathwish99, Webster City Iowa on Saturday, July 22, 2006

This amp is a very nice amp. I just recently installed 2 of these in my car. The results were awsome and I have to get a ported box for my subs because my subs are hitting so hard my sealed box is coming apart, literally. I've only heard this amp with subs in a sealed box but in a ported box it should be much louder. If your looking for an amp thatll turn some heads when cruising and beable to hear you coming, i'd reccomend this wonderful alpine amp.

    Alpine Type-R 12

Written By Peter, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Thursday, June 08, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently upgraded my 2003 Honda Element with a little bit of boom and I must say that I am very happy with Alpine. After many talks with my good friend Alan and reading a bunch online, I picked out the best equipment for the money and space that I am willing to give up.

I have one Apline Type-R 12" with Dual Voice Coils (SWR-1242D) that I mounted in the Q-Logic 1.25 cubic inch ported box (QLH-1.2512SS). Alpine recommends anywhere from 1-2.0cubic inches in a ported setup, but i read somewhere that 1.7 cubic inches is optimal. I picked the 1.25 box due to its compact size in the back of my Element. I surf a lot and watened to make sure that I had enough room to fold back one rear seat to accomidate my surfboards/friends.

I matched the sub with the Apline MRP-650 V-Power Amp. I have both voice coils wired for 600W @ 2 ohms. I mounted the amp upsidedown on the back of the box. Bought the recommened streetwires amp kit and ran the power down the drivers side, RCAs down the passenger side. Looks very clean thanks to Alan.

I changed out my stock head unit with the Apline CDE-9845. I felt that it was the best deal for the money. I also bought a Aux cable and drilled out a hole in the underside of the storage bin located under the gear shift and ran the Aux for iPod/DVD/Laptop hookup. When not in use it stores toally away and appers to be stock.

When the bass hits i can not make out whats in my rearview. This combination gives me plenat of bass and more importain... clear bass. I have tuned the sub so that my headunit output is only 11 out of 15 and everything sounds super clear and loud/booming at 22 on the head unit (out of 45.) Enjoy!

    Alpine MRP-M650

Written By chris, Rochester, NY on Thursday, June 01, 2006

Bought this amp to power a 12 inch solo baric L5. I already had a mrp-f450 4 channel running my speakers so needless to say I was already happy with the first alpine amp. My expectations were definately met, wired the sub in parallel for a 2 ohm load and it SLAMS! Also, using 2 amps I was worried I would create a ground loop and get noise (alternator whine) into the system, Alpine's "Star Topology" seems to work great, I have absolutely no noise coming through my speakers and am not using any filters of any kind. Would definately recommend this and any other Alpine product to anyone that is looking to upgrade their system, you simply can't go wrong with Alpine's line-up.

    Alpine MRP-M650

Written By Tehvine, NY on Saturday, April 29, 2006

I currently own two MRP-M650's in my accord with two 12" Type-R Dual 4ohm woofers. Originally I only had one of these amps powering both subs in series parallel for 4ohm, but I decided I wanted 2ohms and more power. I thought the 4ohm configuration was loud... With both amps running a 2ohm load to each sub, they slam like no other. I used to have to tighten my tail lights every week. With both amps I lost all the nuts and had to get new and put some loc-tite on them. If you do decide to get 2 of these badboys like I did, you will need a cap without a doubt. I recommend something in the 2.5+ farad range, my honda alternator is no match for the current draw of these bad boys. Needless to say, I'm loving alpine and these are some awesome amps.
