Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

Our take on the Infinity Primus P363

by Kristen Schaub

No matter where your movie and music interests take you, Infinity's Primus P363 makes an enjoyable traveling companion. The sound is detailed yet balanced, with dialogue presence that breathes life into every movie night, whether you're watching a gritty indie thriller or a lush period romance. Plus, the deep, clear bass adds a nice kick to your action flicks. And it also reproduces your music with robust, enveloping sound, no matter what you listen to or how loud you play it. It's all thanks the combination of Metal Matrix Diaphragm® driver technology and low-resonance enclosures that have made the Primus Series a longtime hit with audiophiles.

Exclusive Infinity Metal Matrix Diaphragm drivers
The Primus P363 features Infinity's exclusive Metal Matrix Diaphragm ("MMD" for short) driver technology in the 3/4" tweeter, 4" midrange, and the dual 6-1/2" woofers. These MMD drivers consist of a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. The result is extremely fast, extremely accurate response, giving you distinctly cleaner, more realistic sound, even at higher volume levels.

Build a complete Primus® system
The Infinity Primus P363 will fill just about any room with dramatic and well-defined sound. Use a pair to create a high-quality stereo system, or add it to Infinity's P163 bookshelf speaker speaker and PC351 center channel speaker to create a stunning Primus home theater system. And don't forget to add the perfectly matched PS38 powered subwoofer to get deep, accurate bass in the mix.

    Driver Technology

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels.

Woofers: The dual 6-1/2" M.M.D. cone woofers offer extremely accurate midrange response for cleaner, more realistic sound. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use rubber surrounds.

Midrange: The speaker has a 4" midrange driver mounted above the tweeter. Like the woofers, the midrange uses a rubber surround.

Tweeter: The speaker has a 3/4" M.M.D. dome tweeter that offers superior stiffness and damping compared to traditional metal domes.

Waveguide: The P363's tweeter utilizes an acoustical waveguide to deliver, more even high frequency response, no matter what part of the room you're in.

Crossovers: The speaker features a 3-way crossover system with crossover frequencies at 350Hz and 3300Hz. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope.

Matching System: The P363 is voice-matched to all the speakers in the Primus line, so a complete matching system can be built.

    Connections

5-Way Binding Posts: The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

    Mounting Options

Outboard/Inboard Feet: The speaker comes assembled with attractive silver outboard feet. If desired, you can replace them with the supplied, less visible, black inboard feet. The feet can be changed with the use of a handheld Phillips-head screwdriver. The overall width is approximately 15/16" less, and the overall height is approximately 1/4" less when the black, inboard feet are used, compared to the outboard feet.

    Dimensions

Good things come in small bundles

Written By Emmanuel, Lubbock, TX on Tuesday, April 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speaker is not the most towering floor speaker out there but it's certainly bigger than I thought it was going to be. But even more impressive is the sound that came out of this thing. My god!!! Forget all the technical mumbo jumbo about highs, lows, midrange, impedance , and what not. I know what I'm hearing. The price certainly had me fooled. This thing sounds like $500 apiece speakers. Some of the reviews I read b/4 buying mentioned a break in period on bass reproduction. I didn't have to wait--this speaker hit the ground running.

For the record I'm pairing the speakers with Marantz PM5004 Integrated Amp. and a Rega RP3 table with Elys 2 cartridge. Yeeees, suhhh!!! its' a' good to be back in the land of vinyl again. Honestly, I can't say that either vinyl or CD sounds better than the other. All I can tell you, my friends is that vinyl sounds different from CD and if I had pick one of 'em on any day of the week I say give wax.

If you are on a budget and looking for a speaker that sounds like money is no object then this is your speaker. Plus, Crutchfield will get it to your doorstep in without much hassle. Great job, fellas!

If y'all excuse me I got some records to listen to.

These sound grrrreat for digital sources and playing dance/rock music loud but if you are hooking it up to a turntable, this is not for you. I had these discontinued Pioneer bookshelf speakers that put these floorstanders to shame hooked up to a turntable. I appreciated the sound of vinyl so much more than digital, but not with these floorstanders. Also, there was a crackling in one of the tweeters out of the box so I sent it back..

Overall, the bass is not tight enough and I always kept it as low as possible. The midrange didn't wow me. Take my advice and put the same amount of money into bookshelfs. Your paying extra for the sexiness and loudness.
    Pros:
looks sexy, very Loud, Great for digital sources
    Cons:
bad for turntable sources, bass is not tight enough, extremely heavy.

    Pleasant Surprise

Written By AlMc, Sykesville, MD on Sunday, March 24, 2013

I purchased these on advice from the Crutchfield rep with whom I spoke over the phone. Now any old high fidelity enthusiast knows you can't buy speakers over the phone or Internet since you have no idea how they will sound in your home. But the Rep was very concise in describing the relative strengths and weaknesses of various speakers that I asked about. My biggest concern was the limited power that I would have - 65W per channel using a Denon RCD n7 multimedia receiver. But i also wanted a decent powered subwoofer to accompany these since the Denon had subw output. So he thought these would work for my application - a lot of vocal jazz, soft rock, blues, oldies, and even flamenco guitar and some classical. So I took the plunge and bought them based on his recommendation. I also bought the Infinity PS410 sub on his recommendation. They arrived two days later this past Monday. Boxes were not damaged, and neither were the speakers. The Denon arrived this past Friday. Hookup was simple with the monster cables I also bought. What a pleasant surprise! These speakers instantly impressed me and my family, all music lovers. Everyone is blown away how clean these sound with great definition in the midrange. Bass is very adequate for us and they haven't really been broken in. Highs are smooth and not peaky. While the subwoofer provides the floor shaking thump, the 363's hold their own very nicely. Volume is impressive given the limited power of 65W, despite the low impedance.
    Pros:
Great looking, slender tower, smooth sound across the entire range, Excellent definition especially with vocal reproduction. Quite efficient despite low impedance. Excellent bass unless you need to rattle the roof shingles (I don't). Great value for the price.
    Cons:
Can't think of any. Haven't heard any.

Surprised with bass response after break-in period

Written By Gino R, 10457 on Monday, March 11, 2013

As the title states, i was in for a surprise of just how much bass these speakers produced AFTER its break in period. About 10 days for me or about 8-12 rather loud music time.

When I first tried out these P363, I immediately noticed two things. Really nice highs & clarity but not the bass response I was looking for. I immediately began to cherish my 10inch Klipsch sub woofer even more. I was content with having the sub on at all times to compliment my new setup. No big deal to me because my vocals and mids were already a great gain for me for such inexpensive speakers. Infinity speakers nonetheless.

However about a week and half later I began to notice how much more bass response I was getting from these bad boys. Having a wall behind the speakers also help. I have since shut off my sub and only have the sub on about 10-15% of the time when playing music. And trust me I lovvvve bass, I never imagined the day my sub would be dang near permanently in the off position but thanks to whatever the break-in cycle did.. It did it well. I'm really happy with these speakers. The craftsmanship and quality of the materials used in the P363 would make your head spin as to how inexpensive these speakers really are.

If you just purchased these speakers and are disappointed with the initial bass response you're getting just like I was, PLEASE..Give yourself a good 10-15hours of heavy music time to break these subs in. Something truly magical happens in this break-in period.
    Pros:
Great sound. Real good bass only after the break in period. I'm using a Yamaha RX473 receiver to power my Primus. Great value at this price. Great craftsmanship, sleek & sharp looking unit.
    Cons:
Initial break in period is a must. It would deceive anyone into thinking these speaker lack bass during its initial setup. The speakers should come with some sort of advisory sticker right on em about how important it is to break these speakers in for proper bass response.

    Overrated

Written By GW, Danville, IL on Sunday, March 03, 2013

I bought these to replace a set of Cerwin Vega VS-150's. For those of you not familiar with the VS-150's, they are easily the best speaker Cerwin Vega ever made, but they are HUGE, and I was looking to free up a little space.

Besides freeing up space, I was also hoping to get crisper highs and clearer midrange from the P363's compared to the VS-150's, but that simply wasn't the case - all I did was sacrifice ALOT of bass! Sure, the P363's have a nice punchy "mid-bass" to them, but anything too low simply overpowers them. It seems like I am constantly adjusting the bass level on the receiver with each new song that comes on! That wasn't so with the VS-150's - set the bass levels to maximum and never touch it again - nothing bothered them. I do run a powered subwoofer in my system, but it seems like there is a BIG gap in the bass range between where the sub cuts off and the P363's can comfortably take over. I will give the P363's more time to "loosen up", but I have a feeling the VS-150's will be returning to duty soon.
    Pros:
Slender, space saving design and attractive.
    Cons:
Can't handle low range bass - period.

    Great Speakers for the Price

Written By rick4946, Dallas, Texas on Thursday, January 24, 2013

These are great sounding speakers matched to a Vintage receiver. Good clean deep base with no need for a sub, 80 watts would be about the least power per channel though leaving a lot of AVR or surround sounds out of the picture.
    Pros:
Good clean sound with at least 80 watts per channel or more
    Cons:
Cheap looking black cabinet makes them look like the cheap modern day electronics

The receiver makes a huge difference!!

Written By Tim in Illinois, Channahon, IL on Friday, January 18, 2013

Having been a drummer for more than 35 years, I can appreciate great sound, especially percussion. These speakers are excellent at reproducing music very accurately, with realistic and clean bass. If you enjoy hearing music the way it was recorded, you will love these speakers. Be warned if you plan on a sound check of these before buying; the receiver is the key. Garbage in, garbage out. Ask the store to hook up a solid 2 channel receiver to these and you will end up buying them. I almost passed them up during my sound check, as a Denon theatre receiver was hooked up to them, with no bass or treble control. Very bland until I asked for a medium range 2 channel yamaha hooked to them. Was loading them in a shopping cart after one song.

    Pros:
Very responsive and clean, best in price range IMO

Great Sound and great look. We bought these to replace a pair of JBL front channel speakers for home surround sound. The inifinity P363 speakers sound terrific with special effects. I can hear every breaking glass and transforming robot clearly. They handle music pretty well too. I LOVE these speakers!! The black speakers look great and do not take up much room..

I'm 57 years old and grew up with such speakers as JBL Century 100, AR 3a and Bose 901. I'm still a bit partial to the Bose series but I can say with no doubt that these Infinity speakers are at least as sweet sounding as the old AR 3a which I loved. You can't go wrong here.

Clean sound, tight base.....the snare drum reproduction is just incredible.

I called Crutchfield several times and each advisor spoke highly of these speakers. Based on this and the reviews I purchased a set to replace my aging Bose 601 Series 2 speakers. Quality packaging from Infinity and excellent fit and finish for the money spent. They sound fantastic and highly recommend these to anyone who maybe sitting on the fence.
    Pros:
Performed just as the advisors stated with great bass and all around superb sound quality.
    Cons:
    Speaker cabinets are heavy.
