Kenwood

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Kenwood KDC-248U

by Ken Nail

Sure, you can plug an iPod® into an aux input if you want to listen to your tunes in the car, but why settle? If you connect it to Kenwood's KDC-MP248U CD receiver through its USB input, you'll get better sound and you'll be able to control your iPod from the receiver, too.

Outstanding sound quality
The KDC-248U is a no-nonsense way to add iPod control and great sound to your car. Its potent built-in amplifier fills your car with sound, adjustable with Kenwood's System Q 3-band equalizer and bass boost. Not that you'll need to tweak it that much — the receiver's premium digital-to-analog converter converter renders your discs and digital files with exceptional accuracy, so you'll enjoy outstanding sound quality.

You've got connections
Even if you don't have your iPod on hand, you can keep the party going all day by loading in a disc full of MP3 and WMA files, or by jacking another device into the front panel aux in. When you're ready to expand your system, a set of preamp outputs simplify the job of adding an amp or a powered sub for some extra kick in your sound.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KDC-248U features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The head unit includes a cloth pouch for storing the face-plate when detached.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features an 11-character blue backlit fluorescent display with red button illumination.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face and button illumination is "keyed." When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can change this setting within the menu from On or Off.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-248U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-248U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-248U are as follows:

      • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
      • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System Q Sound Control: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The System Q's User Mode features independent Bass (100 Hz), Treble (10 kHz), and Midrange (1 kHz) control from - 8 to +8 dB.

Bass Boost: In addition, The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV1, LV2 or Off.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, USB/iPod, and Aux).

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Selectable 2.0V Preamp Output: The KDC-248U features a 2.0-volt stereo preamp output that you can be adjusted from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass subwoofer preamp output.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-248U offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

      • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 80 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
      • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
      • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Tel Mute: The KDC-248U features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood KDC-248U features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Tuner Presets: The KDC-248U's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. The Kenwood KDC-248U offers two preset modes.

      • Normal: You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets (total of 24).
      • Mix: A total of of 6 stations can be assigned to a total of 6 preset buttons, regardless of AM/FM band and connected Satellite Radio tuner. You can recall a preset station without switching between bands.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

Each disc can have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 50 folders, and 255 files per folder (512 maximum number of files and folders). Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice unit and works well in my sons Silverado. It works very well with iPhone -> Pandora. The adjustments on the unit are a little complicated but work ok once you get used to them. Overall we are very pleased with the product especially cosidering the price.
      Pros:
Nice power, nice packaging, good display, nice price
      Cons:
Would like more dimming options for the unit.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy installation & has all the functions I want. I'm not a true audiophile and only wanted a decent sounding replacement for my old factory AM/FM/Casette unit. This Kenwood model may not be a true high performance unit but it's a clear step up from my old factory one and the USB port is great. Instead of dragging around a bunch of CD's I just carry a single thumb drive with my favorite music. FM reception much better than my old factory unit. Nice clean look in the dash without unnecessary gimmickry.
      Pros:
Clean look Good sound quality Adequate functions to tune unit to type of music and speakers Easy to learn operating functions USB & auxiliary port
      Cons:

Great sound and was easy to install. My only complaint is that the LED screen is a little hard to read. It would easier to read if the face of the unit angled up a little instead of facing straight.

My only little quibble is that the USB reader only reads the ancient filesystem type FAT; I'm a Linux user and it would be great for it to read a EXT disk or at least read the Windows NTFS!

I bought this for my 18 year old sons vehicle. I wanted something with good quality that was reasonably priced and simple to use. The KDC-248U fit the bill. I installed it in 20 minutes and did the initial set up in five minutes. I am running a Bazooka bass tube and four Polk speakers with it and it sounds great!! Plenty of bottom end and clear crisp highs. Easy to use and understand.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked at a lot of receivers before purchasing this unit. The sound quality is much better than factory, even with factory speakers. Installation took a couple of extra days since the first dash kit came broken. Customer Service shipped out a replacement ASAP and we we're all set. Wire Harness was easy to do as well. I was surprised at how good the AM reception in the unit was. The supplied adapter works very well. Instructions were eay to ready and the install took all of 15 minutes. The USB and auxiallry inputs are nice. I can play my old Ipod Nano 4th gen with the controls on the unit. The only thing I haven't discovered is how to turn the "Beep" off. an attenuator button on unit would have been 5 stars easy. I still give it a 4.5 overall. I'd buy this unit again.
      Pros:
Auxillary/Ipod interface, sound quality, ease of use.
      Cons:
No attenuator on unit, just remote. Dim on unit isn't all that dim.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this yesterday. Seems like a real nice stereo, now have to figure out how to make the necessary settings, etc. Only gripe is that it's not that intuitve to figure out in terms of the controls and seems like most functionality is via the remote. I'm not used to using a remote in a car. I like to just use the buttons on the radio. I seem to be unable to turn off the stereo; the remote isn't doing it and I think that's how it's suppsed to work. There is no primary pwr button on the radio itself. It shuts off when the car is shut off - at least until i figure it out. I hope it's not a wiring problem in the 13 wires I had to conect. Also, didn't care for the 13 wires I had to connect, mostly just tedious. Took 2.5 hrs to put in and is the first radio I have ever installed. The first use of my Ipod via the USB drive was seemless, it immediately started playing and scrolling artist / song. The detailed instructions provided are very helpful. My real comments are about Crutchfiled. What an awesome company. Their tech support is top notch. I called them 4 times during my installation; 2 out of 4 times was direct to a person to trouble shoot with, the other 2 were 1 call transfer away. They know their stuff and are spot on !! Great job Crutchfield.

This is a great unit as an upgrade from your factory stereo. As this was my first install of a custom stereo, I wanted something simple to use, relatively inexpensive, and great sound quality. Kenwood has impressed me on all three of these categories. The stereo sounds great, was not incredibly difficult to install for someone with any amount of how-to knowledge, and is an excellent bang-for-your-buck stereo. I wish that the dimmer switch on the car would automatically dim the stereo as well, but leaving it at its bright setting is not really a nuisance for night driving. Even with my factory speakers still installed, I noticed that the bass was more clear and distinct, and sound clarity is retained at much higher volumes. Operation is very intuitive (I've never needed to look at the directions to perform any task). I'd recommend this to anyone.
      Pros:
Easy to use, far more quality than factory radio, good value
      Cons:
Does not automatically dim with headlight switch like factory radio (but is manually dimmable)

A great unit for iOS devices

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this unit a lot, especially when you consider the price. I was willing to forgo Bluetooth, but very much wanted a way to play the musical and podcasting libraries on my family's various Apple iOS devices. I'm really pleased with the performance in this area. The text displays is easy to read and does a nice job displaying the iOS data: title, artist, track, etc. Despite my feeling that many faceplates have complicated and/or tiny controls, I find this unit pretty easy to use. The red backlighting is a nice touch, and the unit looks good in my 2004 Saturn VUE. If you are looking for Bluetooth, look elsewhere. But if you want a tuner/CD/iOS player, this is a good unit with great sound.
      Pros:
built in amp power, iOS connectivity, easy controls, nice sound
      Cons:
occasionally the song title display gets out sync with the iOS device, always recovers by the next song

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this unit in my 2000 Jeep Cherokee for over a year now and it is hands down an awesome unit. Great sound even with factory speakers. I noticed an earlier review that stated it has a 256 song limit for a USB key and I have not found this to be true, I use a 8 GB usb key for my music and the unit has no problems playing them straight thru or searching. As far as the small buttons go once you learn which one does what it should be easy to use them while driving.
      Pros:
Easy Instal, Great Sound, Awesom price
      Cons:
The random play seems a bit weak when using a large repository of music such as the afore mentioned USB key . The display does not have a "cycle thru all modes" option.

Very hard to drive and go through those tiny buttons to find a menu.
      Cons:
The clock gains about 1 minute every week. Once a month, I have to set it back about 4 minutes. I use a thumb drive in the USB port. The unit will only recognize the first 256 songs on the flash drive. I have over 400 songs on the flash drive. I had to separate them into two directories (folders), and pick one or the other. The manual and specs never mentioned that it would only recognize 256 files.

      Kenwood CD Receiver

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really wanted a new deck to play my iPod on. This one had all the right features and looked cool. It was easy to install, and the sound quality is incredible. I can't get over how much better my music sounds. The remote is great. You don't have to mess around reaching for buttons. Which the buttons on this receiver are small, but that's another reason why the remote is great. You can control your iPod from the remote (which is easier then using the buttons). I don't think it says in the description that it charges your iPod when plugged in, but it definitely does for those wondering. I don't know much about stereo systems, but I know that this Kenwood CD receiver is awesome. Exactly the deck I was looking for: great price, and plays my iPod. :)
      Pros:
Sound quality, remote, ease of installation, USB/iPod port
      Cons:
You can't dim the lights, it's bright, and it being red doesn't help, I wish you could change the color also. Small buttons.
