What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Alpine SWR-1223D

by Dominic Devito
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Bass production is all about moving air and Alpine's Type-R subs do that better than ever. Advanced suspension features give these heavies the extra-long cone excursion needed to push large amounts of air, while the two-piece parabolic Kevlar® treated pulp woofer cone and multi-roll Santoprene™ rubber surround promote accurate response. Best of all, these subs feature shallower mounting depths than previous Type-R subs, so you can fit them into more spaces in your vehicle.

The SWR-1223D 12" subwoofer handles up to 600 watts RMS for big-time output, and its dual oversized 2-ohm voice coils offer system wiring flexibility. It works well in sealed and ported enclosures so you can choose what kind of bass you want to hear and feel. The one-piece aluminum frame houses a double-stacked ferrite magnet structure for increased accuracy and power handling, along with a finned, radial heatsink that shunts off excess heat for long-lasting reliability with reduced distortion.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

Highlights:

  • 12" subwoofer with dual 2-ohm voice coils

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Alpine Type-R Subwoofer: These redesigned, fourth-generation Alpine type-R subwoofers include several enhanced features to achieve even cleaner, deeper bass extension, faster, more accurate transients and even greater output capability than before.

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-R subwoofer has a two-piece structural parabolic Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted dust cap of the same material, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of injection molded Santoprene, that allows for an incredible amount of linear excursion and greater SPL. The High-Amplitude Multi Roll Surround Design allows for extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area. FEA Optimized for linearity and made with injection-molded Santoprene, the HAMR surround is a key part of the suspension system that allows for extreme excursions with accurate, distortion-free control

FEA Optimized Spider with Reinforced Layer Spider Integration: An FEA optimized Nomex progressive spider with reinforced layer spider integration ensures reliable and consistent control of the tinsel-leads to eliminate any possible mechanical noises or interference typical of many high-excursion designs.

Radial Vented VC Heatsink and Airflow Management System: Alpine's Patented Radial Vented VC Heatsink and Airflow Management System actively manages voice coil temperatures by forcing air directly across the heatsink system. This helps to minimize power compression and ensures reliable long playing time by actively eliminating output-robbing heat away from the voice coil. The new one-piece cast aluminum frame with integrated shorting sleeve uses the entire frame as a heatsink, to allow for sustained power output and handling, even in the most extreme of applications.

FEA Optimized Segmented Machined CRC Motor Structure: The new Type-R subwoofer has over 20% more motor force than its predecessor delivering more accurate, louder and cleaner bass with even more control, thanks to its new ten-piece, segmented, double stacked magnet structure. The optimized machined CRC motor structure also creates a symmetrical magnetic field while optimizing flux density to greatly reduce distortion, while further improving power handling and output.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensure for an ultra symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to greatly reduce distortion, while further improving power handling and output.

Oversized Voice Coil: The oversized (65mm), high-temperature (180°C), 4-layer dual voice coil offers more than 35% more surface area, allowing for increased power handling to 600W RMS / 1800W Peak.

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 2-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 4-ohm load. If each coil is connected to a different amplifier channel, each channel will see a 2-ohm load.

Push Terminals: The push terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire up to 8 gauge, pin connectors, or banana plugs.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 1-ohm load) or series (for an 4-ohm load).

    Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed and Vented Enclosure Compatible: The Alpine Type-R Subs have been completely redesigned to offer more installation flexibility and application versatility (in either a sealed over vented enclosure) to build the ideal sound system in your vehicle. These new designs offer a near 20% reduction in mounting depth, while offering even greater output capability.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box sizes range from 0.65 cu/ft to 1.25 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size is 1.0 cu/ft.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The recommended vented box sizes range from 1.0 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size is 1.5 cu/ft. A slot port with the following dimensions should be used: 12" (W) x 1.25" (H) x 22" (L).

Very nicely looking, solid aluminum voice coil vent, the sub is sturdy and weighs over 20 lbs for each one lol Using a temporary amp with only 160-320 watts and it gets pretty decently loud, the new ones should be even better

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had some older type r's already in my trunk and decided it was time to upgrade. So I started looking around for some deals. Had considered going with Kicker's or JL but decided that I've been using Alpine products for a long time and I've never been disappointed. I found these on Crutchfield at unbelievably low price so off the back I'm excited. I currently have each sub wired to 1 alpine mrd m500 amp x 2 in a sealed box in my 2010 GTI. The amps push about 500 watts x 1 each. I'm really surprised at the clarity of the bass and the cleaness of the sound. I'm keeping my factory head unit and will likely be getting the LC2i line out converter from Audiocontrol to clean up the sound even more.
    Pros:
I got these at very very very good value but worth the $249.99+ initial plus price tag.
    Cons:
Bass not as deep as JL w3's but JL cannot compete value wise as even used w3's can run about $400+

Very good sub! And now that the 12D2's came out, the 1223d's are really cheap! Have 1 in a 2.5 cu.ft. Labryrinth port box and it ROCKS! With the price drop, I am adding a 2nd one! Will build an off axis T-line and see how it goes! Should be shaking the heck out of my truck!
    Pros:
Price is great! Very durable sub! Rated at 300-600 RMS, and can handle more! Been feeding mine 800 for over a year and doesn't show an ounce of pain!
    Cons:
Not that I have needed it yet, but it would be great if they were re-coneable! Other than that, nothing!

Alpine is a good sub. I had 2 of the kicker CVX 12" before these but I blew one of them. I was rolling with just one and that one is loader then 2 12" alpines type R. They do sound a bit cleaner but ive also heard that they blow real easily.
    Pros:
Good sound for the sale price. Good bass.
    Cons:
Scared to put it up any loader because they might blow. Have a Rockford fosgate 1000 watt 1 ohm. Amplifier

I bought these 2 of these subs because they were on sale (149) and I would've gladly paid way more than the original price 249. Actually I'm surprised that they don't cost way more.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this woofer to replace a RF P2 that had the rubber surround separate after 11 months. The RF was not even pushed hard...I will say that it sounded very good before it happended. I could have had it reglued but it did have me wanting more, so I decided to search for a replacement. After hours on Crutchfields website and reading countless reviews I decided to buy this one. First I noticed the support basket was a little thicker and looked stronger, overall the woofer was well built and looked great. The supplied jumper wires seam a little loose in the connector but haven't disconnected, only time will tell. After the break-in period I have to say that this woofer hits harder and lower than the RF. It's not a huge difference but the sound quality is there and it put that little extra something I needed in my system. I thought about buying the new version but could not resist the price drop on this model. I have it installed in a 1.0 cu. ft. sealed box. pushed by a JL 500 v2 mono amp. Very happy! I would also like to thank Crutchfield for their great service and getting it shipped fast!
    Pros:
    Quality build, great sound
    Cons:
    jumpers a little loose

    Amazing sub!

Written By Anonymous, Cortland, NY on Monday, October 03, 2011

This subwoofer is amazing, I have it in a ported Sound Ordnance box I purchased from Crutchfield. It is powered by an Alpine MRP-M1000 wired at 4 ohms. I haven't cranked it because I don't want my alternator to die. On songs where I feel it's hitting hard and shaking my mirror, the sub looks as if it is going along at a leisurely volume! The lows are amazing and the mids aren't bad, but it is definitely made for the deep lows rather than higher bass notes. Even on level 18 on my Sony deck, I can feel my seat vibrate in my 04 Impala. When it was installed the guy installing it had it on volume 26 and it just filled the garage with bass. It blew all the leaves in my trunk into his face! If you are considering buying this sub, do it. You won't regret it. I'm a bass head and one is definitely enough, but if setting off car alarms and rattling your car to bits is up your alley, buy two and go ported. I can see my trunk flex on bass heavy songs, so imagine what two will do with the volume cranked!

    Blew my mind

Written By Cody B, Lafayette, IN on Saturday, October 01, 2011

I was hooking two of these up, and my anticipation got the best of me. After hooking up one, I tested it and it blew my mind. I hooked the second one up and could ot believe this much power was coming from a sub this price. There is no better deal out there. My recommendation is to make a cutom box for premium sound. Ported.

great subwoofers, ive had alot of subs, these are certainly the best i have ever had provided by the best company i have ever dealt with. crutchfield knows the definition of service, and they go far beyond the standard of customer service. i recently bought 2 alpine r's and could not be happier with them in the sound ordinance box i bought from crutchfield, to put it in simple words, my car thumps BOUNCES, RAGES WITH BASS. im running these on alpines mx100 amp 1000 watts rms. the box looks amazing and i have a 3 year warranty on the subs. if you are debating getting any other subs for a higher price or a lower price, think no more, i have already spent that time for you, these are high quality and deliver exactly what you want...BASS. REASONABLE PRICE with great quality and yes they are much better than the rockford fosgates that i have had, thankyou crutchfield

I have this sub hooked up with a 600 watt alpine mono amp which I bought at a local audio store and after just 4 months I noticed a very audible rattle coming out of the trunk so I check it out and the box that the dealer said was made for this sub had blown the side panel out and was rattling against the box. I now need a new sturdier box for this beast.
