Our take on the Sony MDR-XD200

Sony's MDR-XD200 headphones are a great way to listen in private to all your favorite home entertainment. Their large 40mm speaker drivers use a powerful type of magnet that improves accuracy and clarity. A sound mode switch lets you select "Music" or "Movie" mode, for more balanced sound from songs and soundtracks. And you can listen in comfort for hours, thanks to padded earcups and an open-design headband.

Highlights:

  • lightweight, around-the-ear design
  • sealed, padded earcups
  • sound mode switch for "Music" or "Movie"
  • 40mm drivers with neodymium magnets
  • 24k gold UniMatch plug adapter for mini or full-size headphone jacks
  • frequency response: 10-22,000 Hz
  • cord length: 11.5 feet
  • impedance: 70 ohms
  • weight: 7.77 oz.
  • warranty: 90 days

    Features

Driver Units: The long stroke 40mm dome drivers give you a wide dynamic range for listening to movies and music.

Neodymium Magnets:  The drivers feature strong, lightweight neodymium magnets to deliver powerful sound.

Sound Mode Switch: Each earcup has a switch on the bottom of them that allows the choice of either music or movie mode, depending on the source that you are listening to. In the movie mode, you get a more powerful, prominent bass response - suitable for movie watching. In the music mode, the bass response is more natural like the original recording.

Ear Conscious Design: This closed, over-the-ear design helps the headphones to fit the angle of any shapes of the ear naturally without squeezing the ear. The earcups swivel vertically.

Construction: The black earphones use soft black vinyl for the earpads and the headband is a black poly material.

    Specifications:

    • Driver: 40 mm dome type with neodymium magnets
    • Type: Closed, dynamic
    • Power handling capacity: 1500 mW
    • Frequency Response: 10-22,000 Hz
    • Sensitivity: 102dB SPL
    • Impedance: 70 ohms at 1 kHz

    Sony MDR-XD200

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got these to monitor and record with a small digital recorder. They do just fine for that. Very pleasing sound with enough clarity to hear everything. You wouldn't want to do any serious mixing with these as the low end may be a little lacking. But really I like it that way. Too many low frequencies pumping into your cranium causes headaches.

These aren't noise canceling, you can pretty much hear everything in the room but for my purposes that's fine. I'm very happy with these headphones.

Good sound, decent price , only con is that this thing is pretty heavy, the band
rests directly on your head and starts to bother after an hour or so. Can't have
it on for long. I bought it only because of the extra long cord and it serves
    the purpose.

    A Good Buy !

Written By Paul, Woodstock, VA on Saturday, February 26, 2011

I don't use headphones a lot, but these Sony MDR-XD200 more than take care of my needs. Very nice sound, relatively comfortable, and the 11-1/2 ft. cord is a great convenience. The movie/music switch does not seem to do much, but for the price, its a good buy and I would recommend them. A 4.5 would be my rating.

For the price you can not ask for more. They are big and not too comfortable, but the sound is good. It includes an adapter. I use them for listening music in my laptop. As always, Crutchfield service is first class.

    Pros and Cons

Written By BG, California on Monday, June 21, 2010

The sound quality is very good for the money. I compared this with Sennheiser via reviews by other Crutchfield customers and purchased the Sony because comfort is important to me. Many reviews said the Sennheisers are too tight on the ears.
Awhile back I noticed ridges in my scalp and even a laceration. I though maybe I had bumped my head somehow. I was a little freaked out. Then I realized that this was caused by these headphones.
There is no padding in the head band. That is a hard plastic head band and when I lay down at night to watch movies or listen to music the head band is digging into my scalp.
I only noticed this after my return period was up. I'll try putting a wash cloth around the head band.
This is the reason I gave this only a 3. Ear pads are comfortable, sound is very good, price is good, the cord is long...it sounds great on my home stereo and my lap top but the head band was not designed for comfort.

Great sounding set of cans for the money

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It usually takes a bit of time to break in a set of headphones in order to make them sound really great. I was impressed with the specs on these for the price and couldn't resist, despite my excellent luck with Sennheisers in the past. These headphones sound great for in home use straight out of the packaging! I hope this means that as they get some wear that they'll somehow get even better. These are extremely comfortable (I've had them on for about 6 hours today). They fit over my ears perfectly and I've had no issues with wearing glasses while listening to them.

Needless to say, this is the best set of inexpensive headphones I've owned! With their knowledgeable and helpful staff and their excellent willingness to please, no one else can beat
    Crutchfield!

Just got these a few weeks ago and they feel comfortable around the ear and the sound is good. The headphones are lightweight and I like the single cord that does not get in the way which is also nice an long. I use them with my Yamaha receiver to listen to movies when it's either too early or too late in the day. Hopefully, the padding on these headphones will last because in the past I've had the mid size Sony on-the-ear headphones which fell apart in a couple years.

The MDR-XD200 is as good a deal for the money that can be found. I've had other headphones costing six times as much that didn't sound as good. Also , the MDR-XD200 is very comfortable and doesn't hurt like the other phones did after extended use (4 to 6 hours).

well to start off i listen to a lot of music in my car with a good system ,i also listen to my 5.1 set up in my home, and record music and play guitar well with this in mind i like to think i have a good ear but everyones taste is diffrent. i got the headphones to be used as a workhorse and do many many things such as comptuter games for guitar and for recording.

they sound really good right now nice and crisp but that can chang ewith time i just havent had them long enough to know. the high end midrange is lackn some pop or bite but the highs sound good no buzz not to bright either so you wont get treble poinsoning. vocals rock on this pair.they are also the best pair i every used for my guitar amp they sound idk really good...or it could be its a tube amp

crutchfield they sent the wrong headphones "my fault" didnt copy the part # right but i just taped the box up slaped a sticker on it and sent it back on its way. and it was free to! they sent the right ones back before they even got there pair back
