Sony

Our take on the Sony RM-X60M/L

by Ken Nail

Sony's RM-X60M/L wired marine remote control lets you manage the tunes on your boat from a convenient spot — without exposing your Sony stereo to the elements. When connected to a compatible Sony marine stereo, this splash-proof remote can handle track selection, fast-forward, rewind, volume, and source selection. If you've added a Sony HD Radio™ module, iPod® adapter, or satellite radio tuner to your stereo, you can use this remote to navigate quickly through long lists of stations or music files.

This 4" round remote comes with an 16.5-foot cable, so you can mount it in a variety of locations. Store your stereo safely inside the cabin and let this IPx7-compliant remote deal with the sun, salt, and spray. Warranty: 1 year.

Features

Compatibility: The RM-X60M is designed to work with Sony's UniLink control marine receivers that are compatible with Sony's wired remote. The included UniLink "Y" adapter allows you to connect this unit and another UniLink source (CD changer, Satellite or HD Radio, and iPod) to a compatible head unit.

Display: The display shows source and mode information, satellite radio information, and RDS and CD text information (if supplied by the head unit).

Water Resistant: The remote is water resistant, so it is ideal for use on boats, where a head unit needs to be kept dry, but you need to control it from a damp remote location.

Mounting: The RM-X60M requires a 3.25" diameter round cutout. It's held in place using the included mounting bracket. The mounting depth is 1.4375".

Buttons:

  • Volume +/-: used for volume control
  • Source: selects source (Tuner, CD, CD-changer, Satellite, HD-Radio, iPod, etc)
  • Muting: mutes output
  • Off: turns remote off
  • Mode: cycles through radio bands, satellite bands, etc

Sony Marine Remote

Written By BowRider, Louisiana on Monday, May 20, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Cable was too short. Couldnt buy one from Sony. Purchased extension cable online. When playing iPod, you can not see the song titles on the display, all it shows is "USB". This remote is good for changing volume, changing radio stations if you listen to the tuner and putting a little light on the swimdeck at night...not much else.
Pros:
Seems to be more rugged than previous remote
Cons:
not very functional to use with iPod/iPhone

GET OUT YOUR HOLE SAW

Written By GARRY THE BOATER, FLORIDA on Wednesday, June 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I HAVE HAD 3 SONY REMOTES ON MY BOAT OVER THE YEARS. EACH ONE LASTS ABOUT 2 - 3 YEARS. THIS WAS A NEW MODEL 1 1/2 YEARS AGO WHEN I INSTALLED IT. REMOTE IS STILL FUNCTIONING PERFECTLY AT THIS TIME. INSTALLATION WAS VERY DIFFICULT, I HAD TO DRILL A GIANT HOLE IN THE BACK OF THE BOAT, MUCH LARGER THAN WITH PREVIOUS SURFACE MOUNT MODELS. THIS IS TOUGH THROUGH SOLID FIBERGLASS AND WOOD..... STILL WORKING THOUGH.
Pros:
EASY TO READ
Cons:
BIG MOUNTING HOLE

I used this for a custom stereo set up on my motorcycle. Functionality is great, it has survived the first road trip in the rain... No better solution!
Pros:
Water proof Small size Full function
Cons:
Connectors are large and were tricky to tuck away.

Sony marine remote

Written By chris, texas on Monday, April 23, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield delivered as usual! Great service. Pretty nice unit. Note: before you cut a 3-1/4" hole in your boat, this unit can control your Ipod, but cannot control playlists, artists etc. So you will be scrolling through 500 or so songs to find what you want. I should have read the specs a little closer.
Pros:
Nice package. Waterproof.
Cons:
Big hole to mount it. No "search by" feature

Sony RM-X60M/L

Written By Ant D, New York on Tuesday, October 18, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced my Sony RM-XM10 remote with this one. Works great and looks better too! Gave it only 4 stars because I've only had it a few weeks but, so far so good. Thanks Crutchfield! You were far more help than Sony themselves!

Upgrade and lose functionality?

Written By Tuner, Gainesville FL on Thursday, May 05, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded from an older Sony CD w/iPod interface and RMX55 to the newer
head unit with the tune tray (DMX MS60) and an RMX60. The iPod control on
the head unit is excellent with USB interface speed. The RMX60 ,however,
does not display any information in the mode setting or the Playlist name
which is troubling since my deck is in the cabin...the older wired remote was
slower but did display all the information. Fix those two items and it is a 10, as
it is, disappointing is the best I can do.
