Outdoor speakers let you move the party outside

Outdoor speakers are built tough -- they laugh at wind, rain and weather. Tuck a pair under your eaves and they'll pump out the tunes to keep everybody smiling and swaying at your next cookout or pool party. We also have some "rock" speakers that blend seamlessly into your landscaped lawn or garden.

Our take on the Definitive Technology AW 6500

by Tara W.

Bring the rich, dynamic sound of Definitive Technology speakers to the great outdoors. The AW 6500s feature the same high-quality components as one of Definitive's indoor speakers, but are ready to stand up to the hardships of outdoor living. Install a pair near the pool, on your deck, or even in a sauna — their all-weather enclosures are fully sealed. And the included brackets let you rotate the speaker up to 360° for maximum flexibility.

Crystal-clear highs, distinct mids, and deep bass
Definitive pairs a 1" tweeter with a 6-1/2" woofer for accurate reproduction of the voices and instrumentals in music. They supplement those drivers with a low-bass radiator that delivers bass equivalent to that of a 10" woofer. You'll get deep lows to round out the sound of your favorite tunes.

Got wire?
Most speakers don't include any. Learn more about in-wall wiring at the Crutchfield Learning Center.

Did you know?
Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

Overview: The Definitive Technology AW series all-weather outdoor speaker allows you to enjoy your music outdoors in domestic or commercial applications. The AW series all-weather outdoor speaker utilizes specially developed materials and components to achieve a high level of durability, dependability, and sound quality.

    Driver Technology
    Enclosure Design

    Mounting Options

    Driver Technology

Pressure Coupled Radiator Design: The AW series outdoor speaker provides clear, high-definition sound by pressure-coupling a BDSS technology driver to a racetrack-shaped mid/bass radiator cleverly placed on the opposite side of the enclosure. This technique offers a total bass radiating area greater than an 8-inch woofer to belt out powerful bass that fills outdoor areas.

BDSS Technology: Definitive Technology's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) driver offers a wide-bandwidth accurate frequency response, broad dispersion, low distortion, and detail retrieval; so you hear more the music with greater accuracy and enjoyment. BDSS drivers incorporate the following design features.

    • Balanced Double Surrounds: The speaker's balanced double surrounds support the cone at two points to provide better mechanical stability for longer, more linear excursion, and improved damping to suppress parasitic cone resonance.
    • Mineral-Filled Polymer Cone: The speaker features a deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cone engineered using sophisticated 3D modeling techniques for wide range performance.
    • Waveguide: The cone's integrated waveguide smoothes off-axis response for broad, even dispersion and better imaging.
    • High Temperature Voice Coil: The driver's high temperature, oversized, lightweight vented voice coil offers improved power handling and quick transient response. The voice coil is also lengthened to increase linearity and lower distortion.
    • Magnet Structure: The driver's magnetic system is optimized by finite element analysis to maximize magnetic flux in the gap for high efficiency and linear excursion.
    • Die-Cast Alloy Basket: The die-cast alloy basket minimizes ringing and vibration while the open area minimizes back wave reflection.

    Drivers: The Definitive Technology AW6500 features a 6-1/2" BDSS driver coupled to a 5-1/2" x 10" (racetrack) pressure-driven low-bass radiator, and a 1" pure aluminum dome tweeter.

Break-In Period: The AW series outdoor loudspeakers will sound good right out of the box; however, an extended break-in period of 20-40 hours or more of playing is required to reach full performance capability. The break-in period allows the suspensions to work in and results in full bass, a more open midrange, and smoother high frequency reproduction.

    Enclosure Design

Polystone Non-Resonant All-Weather Enclosure: The Definitive Technology AW6500 features a fully sealed (air and water tight) design, aluminum grilles, and rugged PolyStone enclosure, which allow it to be fully exposed to the elements and still reliably deliver their indoor speaker sound quality for years of outdoor listening enjoyment.

Note: The AW series speakers utilize special components and material for outdoor use. However, you will achieve the longest life of the speaker by positioning it to minimize direct exposure to the elements as much as possible.

Available Colors: The Definitive Technology AW6500 comes in either a Black or White (paintable) finish.

    Connections

Binding Posts: The AW6500 is equipped with a pair of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts to attach your receiver's speaker wire.

    Mounting Options

Mounting Bracket: The AW6500 outdoor speaker features an integrated galvanized steel mounting bracket and unique enclosure shape which allow a full 360-degrees of rotation for maximum placement flexibility. The AW outdoor speaker, using the integrated mounting bracket, can be oriented horizontally or vertically. The mounting bracket allows you to mount the speaker to an outdoor wall or under the eve of your home. The integrated mounting bracket can also be used as horizontal stand, if you want to simply place the speaker on a table or shelf. The mounting bracket is also removable, if you one to place the outdoor speaker in a vertical position on a shelf or table.

Note: The AW speaker can be mounted vertically or horizontally, but remember to always point the speaker in such a way as to allow water to roll off the driver cone and/or low bass radiator.

Placement: Position the AW series loudspeaker as close as possible to the area where you will be listening to it. Pointing the active driver baffle towards the listener while the low-bass radiator side faces the wall or ground gives you the ideal balance of clear mids, extended highs, and low-end bass even in the tough acoustic conditions of the outdoors. The AW speaker has a very wide dispersion patter; however, if you are trying to cover a very large area, you will be better off using multiple pairs of AW speakers in order to achieve and even distribution of sound. With multiple pairs you will avoid having areas where the sound is tool loud and others where the sound is not loud enough. One pair of AW series loudspeakers will cover approximately 200-400 square feet of listening area at moderately loud levels. Try to point the speaker directly at the listening area.

    Great Speakers - Perfect Addition

Written By Chris in Phx, Phoenix, AZ on Tuesday, August 07, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a great outdoor speaker to add to our Pool Area... Sunken Bar needed great sound... added a roof on the bar - these speakers sound great with roof to bounce the bass off of... without the roof - they sounded really good - but with it added - they sound great. 2nd night they were up - roof wasn't done - they went through their 1st Monsoon - no issues as expected. Previous reviews made me purchase above and beyond the BOSE - glad I did... the sound is much fuller than Bose.
    Pros:
    full sound - great speakers
    Cons:
    None

    simply AMAZING!!!

If you are looking for outdoor speakers, look no further. I have heard almost every outdoor speaker out there and the Def Tech 6500's are far and away the best sounding outdoor speakers under $1,000. Bass reproduction is superb and mids and highs are fantastic. Mounting and bracket are easy and smart. They can get loud, more than enough for my half acre lot. Crazy high recommendation.
    Pros:
    Sound, sound, bass, value, everything.
    Cons:
None (would have been nice if they came with mounting hardware)

    Sounding Great!

Written By Rich V, Milwaukee, WI on Tuesday, June 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To be honest and upfront, I haven't given these speakers the recommended 20-40 hours break-in period before writing this review. That said, they sound great! Highs and mids come through nicely, and bass is definitely present, assisted by the radiator. They aren't mounted near the house, so there's not really anything for the bass to reflect off of either. They also weathered their first storm with flying colors only two days after I hooked them up. It rained so hard that I couldn't see the end of my street a mere six houses away. The next day after the storm, I sat on my deck, fired up the receiver, and happy to hear them still working and sounding great. My wife also hit them with water from the hose while she was watering plants, got worried for a second, and remembered they're waterproof.

They're being powered by a Pioneer VSX-1021 K on Zone 2 (which is also awesome, different music/volumes in the living room and kitchen than outside is just fun to do) and at full volume I'm ready to move away from them a bit. Makes me wonder what my neighbors think! If you were pushing them with more power, I can only imagine crisper sound and enough volume to fill a decent space.
    Pros:
    Clean sound, good price, waterproof!
    Cons:

    Excellent Product

I replaced a 15 year old pair of Polk Audio M5 outdoor speakers which had served me well but one blew out. These are actually an upgrade in my opinion with better bass and crisper highs. Simple and easy bracket design made for an easy swap out and for the price point, I think these are a very good value. Highly recommend these Definitive Technology products and will consider their family of products first when looking at future purchases.
    Pros:
quality build, simple and effective hanging brackets, excellent sound with strong bass and crisp highs

I purchased these to replace some 8 yr old Bose 151s. After removing one of the 151s, and replacing it with a AW 6500, I played some music to see the difference. The difference blew me away. These are just excellent, and probably are the best outdoor speakers I've ever heard. I have a surround sound with all def tech speakers, and my wife could care less about the sound. She listened to these, and I actually got a "wow" out of her.
    Pros:
Great separation, with excellent bass, mids, and highs
    Cons:

    Meets expectations

Written By Schnide, Alabama on Sunday, June 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These Def Tech outdoor speakers replace an aged Paradigm Stylus 250 which served me well over the past 10 years. My comments will be for my initial impression since I have just installed. The Def Techs are about 25% larger and provide about 25% better bass. The highs and mid-range are comparable but the planar woofer does add the expected sonic value.

I like the sound. The installation was not a replacement in kind because of the size. I had to move a few inches from the vertical wall. No big deal though it will add some time to the installation.

My wife even noticed a difference who is usually ambivalent to musical subtleties. I think the sound will continue to evolve as we pass the break-in period. I am looking forward to it.
    Pros:
    Better bass Nice design -
    Cons:
Could use better guidance around installation recommendations.

AW6500 Outdoor Speakers on Acre Lot

Written By JoeJ, Marlboro, NJ on Wednesday, June 06, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After some research, decided to purchase and install a pair of these speakers about 35 feet apart below the soffits of a two story home, mounted to the siding. The sound is just amazing, as it projects incredibly well throughout the main entertainment area of my yard (large inground pool and patio spanning an area of about 100 x 80. The most impressive part of these speakers is the combination of bass performance and sound quality /projection at even lower volume levels.

Should also note that I purchased the white ones and paint/primed them as indicated in the instructions to match my siding. Hardest part of the job was snaking the speakers wires through the siding over long distances.
    Pros:
Great sound. Paintable to match home.
    Cons:
Lack of paint templates to cover the speakers while painting (had to cut my own). You need to get your own mounting hardware as well, but that is acceptable (used Wing-Its)

    Excellent outdoor speakers

Written By MarkS, Clovis, CA on Sunday, May 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound really great. I have had them about 2 months now. They are attached to my outdoor patio ceiling about 10' apart next to the house wall. The installation into stucco took about a half hour and the provided brackets made it very easy. The speakers have very good low bass due to the 4 x 10 passive radiator that is facing the ceiling while the other drivers are angle down at about a 45 deg angle. I have them connected to an older DENON 2802. I have clear sound throughout the backyard (about 90' x 25') even though they are under the patio. I recommend these speakers and all other deftec's because of their high quality and excellent sound.
    Pros:
Quality, Clear highs, Pretty good bass, Ease of install
    Cons:

We wanted sound on our patio for a graduation party for our niece and our son. I picked through the prices and the reviews and settled in on the AW 6500. Tested them indoors and they seemed ok. Then mounted them outdoors... They keep our pool party rocking! Great overall performance for an outdoor environment. Plan on another set for the covered patio.

    Pros:
    Bass response is impressive

    Blows Bose Away

Written By Tom M, Clinton, PA on Tuesday, May 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have Bose 251's on my house over the patio...I had an 2nd set of off brand speakers for the other side of the patio....after replacing the 2nd set with these speakers...they just blew my mind. They are incredibly clear. The Bose are going to be taken off the house and will now be the 2nd set of speakers...the bass is 3x's better than the Bose. Don't waste your money on the 251's..these are clearly the better speaker. The only thing to remember is, these speakers are pretty big.
    Pros:
    Nice clear music, excellent bass.
    Cons:
Wish they added more holes for hanging them on my house for they are too spread apart for my application.

I am a speaker snob and didn't expect much out of these, but I was pleasantly surprised. The sound quality is actually quite good and the bass radiator does a good job of reflecting sound off the outside wall. Of course, they only go so loud in an outdoor setting, but I think they are adequate. Looking forward to my next party to really test them out.
    Pros:
Good sound quality. Bass better than expected.

Limited volume in a large yard.

    Rocking in the back yard

Written By ZMan, Southeastern NC beach on Friday, May 04, 2012

This speakers replace a pair of Russound Outback speakers that had been plugging away for the past five years on the back porch. As a previous reviewer mentioned it takes about 40 hours to break these speakers in. However right out of the box they sounded pretty good. Currently I'm using a very old Adcom 545II amp to drive them. The sound is well balanced, with a minimal midrange peak, and the bass is very good, for a speaker of this size. They are very efficient, so it doesn't take to much power to actually knock squirrels out off the trees in the back yard. Currently using a Logitech Touch, with the iPeng app, so I can happily control the sound remotely from the hammock with a smart phone. For the price these are very good outdoor speakers, highly recommended.
    Pros:
    Balanced sound. Good base response.
    Cons:
40 hour break in period, but, sometimes you gotta wait for the cake to bake.

Great Speakers!!!!!!! I was really on the fence about what to get, I splurged on these, and have been extremely happy with them. I though they were a little pricey, but went for them anyway based upon the reviews and purchased 2 of them to put out by my pool. I am happy, and they were well worth the money. I have them hooked up to my sonos system. They just earned a repeat customer!!! Thanks Crutchfield!

    Happy after break-in period

Written By Jon, Wichita, KS on Monday, November 07, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I conducted exhaustive research and there simply is not an outdoor speaker with better "specs" than these for their size. After hooking them up (75 watt per channel Onkyo) I quickly assessed that they were worth about $350, not $500 a pair. After a decent break-in period (recommended by Def. Tech.) they loosened up and improved greatly...and now are well worth the $500. They will solidly hit the advertised 40 hz on the low end. I think the only better setup would be a separate subwoofer, which I considered building. They also seem to handle the power so well I plan on upgrading my amp as they seem to just begin hitting their sweet spot about the time my Onkyo is running out of head room. I mounted them on the house wall about 1 foot below the ceiling of my covered deck.
    Pros:
    Best frequency range for size.
    Cons:
stickers a pain to remove (frustrating)
