Magellan

Who needs a portable navigator?

Portable GPS puts you in touch with the world when you're on the road. Tap the restaurant icon, and it asks you what kind of food you're looking for. Type in "Mexican," and you're eating a burrito before you know it. A portable navigator not only gets you to your destination, it can also find museums, theaters, and other spots along the way. Many navigators receive traffic reports, so you can avoid jams. Other cool features range from hands-free calling to 3D graphics and lane guidance. Best of all, you can move a portable easily from car to car, a big plus for multi-car families.

Our take on the Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM

by Dominic Devito

Magellan's RoadMate 5045-LM eliminates the two "hidden costs" in portable navigation: traffic reports and map updates. This portable navigator gives free lifetime traffic updates in most metropolitan areas so you can find your way around delays on your route. And you also get free lifetime map updates, so you can add current maps up to four times each year without any additional cost. Plus, the RoadMate 5045-LM features a generous 5" display that makes it easier to follow maps in any vehicle.

More maps with more detail
Magellan includes maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico with this navigator, as well as 6 million points of interest for finding lodging, fuel, restaurants, and other stopping points. If you're traveling on a highway, the RoadMate gives you destinations right off the exits instantly, saving you travel time. Route optimization lets you find the most efficient route when running errands by sorting multiple stops on the same trip.

You know how confusing it can be when everyone's telling you to take a right, but there are multiple right hand turns in front of you. The RoadMate 5045-LM's text-to-speech voice prompts say actual street names at most turns, so you'll know you're making the right move. Highway lane guidance that shows you the exact lane you need to be in ahead of time, so you can handle the most complicated highway junctions. Magellan's OneTouch™ menu allows you to access all your favorite spots with just a single touch of the screen, so you don't have to scroll through multiple menu screens every time.

AAA's got you covered
The included AAA TourBook® features give you instant access to service details and recommended destinations from the leading travel resource. If you're an AAA member, you can quickly access a phone listing for AAA Roadside Assistance™ in case of emergency — you'll also get your exact GPS location so help can find you quickly.

    Navigation Features

GPS Receiver: The RoadMate 5045-LM is equipped with a WAAS/EGNOS-equipped GPS receiver. It receives tracking signals from numerous satellites, updating your position once per second. This receiver provides positioning accuracy down to 3 to 5 meters (10-16 feet).

Note: Please note that the Magellan RoadMate receiver is a receiver only and does not transmit GPS location signals. Neither the receiver nor the vehicle can be tracked using the Magellan RoadMate receiver.

GPS Antenna: The portable navigation unit features an integrated multidirectional GPS patch antenna adding to its sleek design.

Note: The first time you use the Magellan RoadMate it may take up to 4 minutes to compute your location under normal conditions. With adverse conditions (not having a clear view of the sky) the time to compute your location the first time can increase.

GPS Positioning: Setting a GPS position is useful if you are not getting satellite information quickly because the Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM has traveled over 500 miles while turned off. Setting the GPS position will allow the unit to compute which satellites are available and calculate the position quicker.

GPS Status Screen: The GPS Status screen uses green bars to indicate that the Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM is using certain GPS satellites to compute the position. Orange bars indicate that the Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM is trying to lock onto a satellite signal and no bar shown indicates a satellite that is not being tracked. The longer the bars, the better the signal.

Map Data: The RoadMate 5045-LM comes with detailed maps and destinations of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, and Puerto Rico, preloaded onto the built-in flash memory.

Note: Map upgrades are available for purchase from the Magellan website (www.magellangps.com) using the Magellan Content Manager and can be downloaded to an inserted micro-SD card.

Free Lifetime Map Updates: The Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM includes free lifetime map updates. Lifetime Maps entitles you to receive up to four map updates per year, for the life of the GPS navigation unit or until Magellan no longer receives relevant map data (whichever is shorter). An Internet connection and Magellan's Content Manager software is required.

Note: The updates will be the same geographic map data originally included with your Magellan product. In some instances, the Magellan unit might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update, in which case you will need to either select reduced map data coverage, or  purchase a separate micro-SD card to load all or a portion of the map data coverage on the card. Lifetime Maps may not be transferred to another person or another Magellan product.

Touchscreen Display: The unit features an extra-large anti-glare, touchscreen 5.0" WQVGA display (14% larger than a standard 5.0" screen) with easy to use menus, maps and icons. The display's brightness can be adjusted for easy night and day time viewing.

Auto Night Map Display: In Auto Night Map Display mode the unit's map screen is displayed in vivid colors for daytime use and a dark-tint colors for nighttime use.

Map Screen: When a route has been calculated, it will be displayed on the Map screen in green with small arrows indicating the direction of travel. The top of the screen displays the name of the street that comes next in your Turn List together with its distance. If you are not in the city in which the next street is, the name of the city is displayed instead. As the route progresses, voice alerts will be used to prompt you of upcoming maneuvers.

    • Map View Options: The portable GPS unit allows you to the following map views.
      • 2D Map: Two dimensional view of map which displays the top of the screen in either the direction of your heading or direction pointing North.
      • 3D Map: Three dimensional view of map which displays the top of the screen in the direction of your heading.
    • Map Screen Modes: There are two unique modes that the Map Screen can be displayed in - Normal and Routing.
      • Normal: In Normal mode, your position is shown on the map along with the time and your speed. As you travel, your position will be updated, giving you a clear view of your position and surrounding streets.
      • Routing: In Routing mode, additional information is displayed, providing you with more detailed information about the route you have selected. In the routing screen, you can view the name of the current street, plus the street name for the next maneuver, POI icons, and distance to next maneuver. You can toggle between the distance remaining to reach your destination, approximate time remaining until the destination is reached, and the approximate time of day to arrive at your destination.

Multilanguage Turn-By-Turn Voice and Visual Guidance: The RoadMate 5045-LM offers Turn-by-Turn visual guidance through it's wide touchscreen display and voice guidance via its built-in speaker. You can select English, French, or Spanish.

Text-to-Speech: The RoadMate 5045-LM is equipped with Text-to-Speech. As you navigate to your destination, the RoadMate 5045-LM will announce the names of the street or exit ramps (or both if desired) that are involved in each maneuver.

Auto Zoom: You can set the navigation unit's map to automatically zoom in to the lowest level when coming up to a turn.

Turn Warning: The Magellan RoadMate will sound an audible beep, bell, or chime to notify you of an upcoming turn. You can also turn this warning tone off.

Maneuver List Screen: Each line of the Maneuver List screen provides details about the maneuvers in the order that they are to be made, with the next maneuver at the top. The bottom bar of the Maneuver List screen indicates the distance and time to the next maneuver as well as the total distance computed for the route. The Maneuver List can be modified if you want to exclude one of the maneuvers to avoid traveling on one the streets listed.

OneTouch Favorites Menu: The RoadMate 5045-LM features Magellan's exclusive OneTouch favorites menu. The OneTouch menu provides easy access to those destinations and searches you use most. The OneTouch Favorites menus provides instant access to your personalized bookmarks of favorite places. You can bookmark your personal favorite destinations, and access them whenever you want from the OneTouch menu.

Keyboard Options: When entering your destination or other data, you can use the on-screen keyboard to spell out the name of the location. You can choose to use the standard QWERTY keyboard layout, or switch it to an ABCDEF keyboard layout.

QuickSpell w/ SmartCity Search: QuickSpell with SmartCity Search narrows your address and city searches, making destination entry easy. To help you make sure you enter in the correct destination, the RoadMate 5045-LM will automatically correct spelling errors and complete your destination address. QuickSpell with SmartCity search also uses information in the unit's database to limit the keys that need to be pressed, presenting only those which can access information in the database.

Current Location Screen: The Current Location screen displays approximate address information, the distance from the next and previous cross streets, as well as your latitude and longitude. To the right is a compass point in your direction of travel, calculated elevation and speed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had an old and small Magellan for years that worked great but wanted to upgrade to a larger screen and udated mapping. My wife has a Garmin and I find the Magellan's to be easier to use. Cant beat them for the money.
    Pros:
Large screen. Accurate. User friendly. Like the insurance commercials say...... so easy even a cave man can do it.
    Cons:
No headphone jack like my old unit had. Almost no GPS of any brand has this feature now unless you get a unit desinged for a motorcycle.

    Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM

Written By JR, NY on Wednesday, February 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Magellan Roadmate 5045-LM almost a year ago, but didn't want to review it until I was positive. This is an EXCELLENT purchase. I don't know what issues other posters have had, but the maps seem to be up to date to me (not when you initially buy it but once you do an update). So far, there has been two (?) map updates available since my purchase. It has NEVER given me wrong directions, or any of that looping stuff.

Whenever I plan a trip, there's always the 4 available route options, and they are always accurate. It seems smart enough to avoid routes that would work but aren't the fastest, mostly highways, or shortest distance (as per the options) so it's doing something right. The only issue can be that sometimes the fastest option on LOCAL roads can be slower than the shortest distance, if it isn't accounting for you being caught at red lights. There's not much it can do about traffic light programming though.

Overall, the only issue I ever encountered was when driving into the heart of a major city, and being surrounded by skyscrapers. The GPS became sketchy. It was still giving me directions, but it was using the wrong street names, and displaying the wrong street names -- although the directions were correct. I had to turn it off and on about 2 times before it returned to normal. So my only real negative is NOT to solely depend on this in major cities.
    Pros:
Large screen. Accurate directions. Multiple route options. Multiple destinations. Ability to save destinations and activate with a single push. Traffic updates. Rerouting options.
    Cons:
Pretty much worthless when surrounded by large buildings, but that's the same with most GPS systems.

    Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM

Written By A.M., Corona, CA on Tuesday, February 14, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to use as an inexpensive alternative while I decide which in-dash unit I want to install in my vehicle. I chose 5045-LM because it was offered with a larger screen and lifetime map updates. When I received the unit I immediately downloaded the latest map updates. I was disappointed to find that the updates were outdated and do not include streets that were constructed 3 years ago. I also found that the unit takes me in circles rather than giving me a direct route to my destination.
    Pros:
    Reasonable price
    Cons:
    Maps are outdated

    Magellan RoadMate 5045-LM

Written By D1, So. Minnesota on Tuesday, October 11, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In comparison to my old (& dead Garmin), there are 2 issues: (1) The ETA is always too high at the beginning of the trip, but zeroes in the closer you get. EG: 1 hour off on a 5 hour drive. (2) Twice on this trip (while set on fastest time), it by-passed obvious paved roads to go to gravel roads, zig zag around 5-6 miles, then come right back to the road I thought we should have taken. Seems to not make a difference which setting it is on (fastest time, shortest distance, mostly or no freeways. May be something I don't know about in the setup--if so, I wish someone would tell me. I do like a 2 mile warning before a turn (not 1), the bigger screen and fast lock in on a satellite. It doesn't seem to charge thru a USB port from my PC though?

Written By Grace G, NYC, NY on Tuesday, August 02, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Before I bought Magellan 5045 KM I tried TomTom and Garmin. The accuracy of information is almost the same, which means it is not really perfect. What is claimed to be as 5-10 ft. accuracy it is not true - in fact in any of these devices the accuracy is about at the best 50 feet. If there is a service or auxiliery road along the freeway - the device does not recognize if you are on a service or main road. What I like about Magellan is that it is associated with AAA and it has very good the Point of Interest features. Also is better than TomTom and Garmin with retreiving the satelite signal and adjusting the route, when you don't follow the original instruction. Some of the route adjustments which I received particulary by TomTom where radiculous. Overall I think that Magellan 5045 LM is a good product.

I purchased the Magellan Roadmate 5045-LM on January 2, 2010. The reason I purchased the Magellan Roadmate 5045-LM was for the large screen and free lifetime map updates. I have an older Magellan Roadmate that worked fine, I wanted the free map updates and larger screen. The screen is very bright and easy to see during day and night time driving. Another plus is the the 15 mile traffic / reroute feature.
