Toshiba

Our take on the Toshiba DVR620

by Loren Barstow

Enjoy the flexibility of recording to either DVD or VHS with the Toshiba DVR620. It combines a DVD recorder and VCR in one space-saving package. Just connect a cable box or satellite receiver to capture your favorite TV shows. Internal dubbing from VHS to DVD, and vice versa, lets you back up your home movies and other non-copy-protected material. A flip-down door reveals front-panel inputs that provide a quick and easy way to record from other sources, such as a camcorder. And if you have an HDTV with an HDMI input, the DVR620 can upconvert DVDs to better match your set's high-resolution screen, so all your discs will look their best.

Learn about the ins and outs of HDMI connections at the Crutchfield Learning Center.

If you don't need a tuner this VCR/DVD Combo works fine,. You need an HDMI connector to go from Combo box to the TV. When I hooked it up my picture was pixelated which I solved with a signal amplifier.
    Pros:
Good picture. Handles both VCR and DVD. Called Crutchfield for help with cables needed.
    Cons:
No tuner. Must watch same channel that you are recording.

I'm on my 3rd (DVR620) to date each one has had the same problem...a clicking/ticking sound, each one made it less often then the previous one, but still there. The sound comes and goes machine on or off, disc tray full or empty. The first unit also had problems recognizing the it was hooked up to a HD TV via HDMI cable, second unit word fine except for the noises, now after a couple of weeks the current unit HDMI video input signal doesn't work, audio side works fine. Never had any of these problem with my old Panasonic which I had for at least 10 years, died after a power outage. Best thing I can say is I'm glad I brought it from here...GREAT customer service, rapid return service!!!
    Pros:
    Auto finalize.
    Cons:
    Manual poorly written.

This is my second Toshiba DVR620. The first one is still working, but my husband and I want to be sure to have a machine that can record and play both VCR tapes and DVDs, so we bought a spare. In addition to making tapes and discs of movies and current television shows, we also are putting old tapes, mostly family home movies, on DVD. This machine does it all to our satisfaction.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased The Toshiba DVR620 because my Sony unit had a power burn out. After a careful review of what is currently availabe,I decided to check out what was hot on Ebay.I soon decided I wouldn't have any cushon to fall back on if anything went wrong.I realized the only place to get a good product, free tech support and free shipping was CRUTCHFIELD.I bought the Toshiba DVR620 simply because it had the ability to dub in both VCR & DVD and vice versa.I spent a few days reading the manual.I called tech support for a review of connecting to a cable TV setup. As always,in a few short minutes,I was talking to a tech who was more than willing to walk me through connecting the unit.I had all the info I needed and had my DVR620 working in a very short time period.Being a telephone tech,I understood everything I was told.and had all the info I needed to start using the DVD/VCR.My tech also took a moment to tell me to call back anytime I needed assistance. After near two weeks of playing with the VCR/DVD,I am convinced I made a great choice in what I purchased and whom I purchased it from.I also have stereo equipment I bought from CRUTCHFIELD about 15 years ago and all is working great.Thank YOU
    Pros:
Does what I need it to do and thensome
    Cons:
    No tuner

It is a great machine, it will let us record part of the programs we like. Sorry it won't allow us to record from a regular digital antenna. Haven't had time to try all of the features. Would always like to see larger displays for us "old" people with poor eyesight.
    Cons:
Needs larger displays for seeing from a distance

Works but must keep TV on to record

Written By Mikethedrummer, Toms River, NJ on Wednesday, September 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as good as any other combo but be warned. I have tried several DVD recorders, some combo recorders, and none of them will record unless you keep the TV on all the time. The content providers (cable, satellite, etc.) are building in content protection called HDCP. They want you to rent a DVR or use Tivo which records to a temporary device as opposed to a permanent device DVD. I have talked to many tech support staff, read many blogs, and there is no way around it. The Crutchfield tech support staff were very knowledgeable but the problem was not resolved. I returned the unit just like all the others.
    Pros:
Easy to use, nice menus, does what is expected
    Cons:
Will not record unless you keep the TV on all the time.

Very Happy wih Toshiba DVD/VHS recorder

Written By heff, newark, DE on Sunday, July 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield service was excellent. Previously had a Sony DVD/VHS recorder, which was almost impossible to use and had many deficiencies. The Toshiba unit was easy to setup. It worked flawlessly. Quality is excellent. I have recorded from VHS and video camera onto DVD, including some editing, and it went very well. No issues or difficulties. Instruction manual is easy to follow, well organized. Everything on the recorder has worked exactly as described in the manual. Remote is easy to use; well labeled and organized.
    Pros:
Quality. Ease of use. Capability to transfer from VHS, video cameras and other sources.
    Cons:
    None thus far.

    Good Choice

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For me this was a great purchase. I wanted to copy some old VHS tapes to disc before
it was too late and this machine has done it very well. I've copied over 240 hours of
tapes since I bought the DVR620 with no errors or problems. I've also recorded about
15 hours of shows directly from TV. It doesn't copy with HD sharpness but the quality of
everything so far has been great. The quality of audio on the final discs has usually been
clearer and louder than the original in many cases. I think the instruction manual is
generally good and relatively easy to follow, at least for what i've needed to do. There
are qute a few other VHS/DVD combo choices out there but I am really happy that I
    chose this one.

Great machine. Does exactly what I wanted, but instructions are intense and it is not so intuitive.

    A great machine!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Toshiba DVR620 is a marvel! With your technical help, it was a snap to hook up to my Toshiba HDTV. The set-up procedure went flawlessly and I have enjoyed watching and making my own DVD's, primarily using movies from Dish Network as my source material. The best feature (compared to my old, un-named DVD recorder) is the automatic finalization the unit provides. I have used other DVD recorders for more than 5 years and this one beats all the others hands down.
    Thanks for the recommendation.
