Polk Audio

Our take on the Polk Audio UltraFit 3000

by Dave Bar

Get top-notch sonic performance, exceptional comfort, and rugged durability with Polk Audio's UltraFit 3000. These versatile in-ear sports headphones make it easy to enjoy great sound quality anywhere you go — to the gym, on the road, or off the trail; the same sound quality that made Polk speakers famous. Their moisture-resistant design stands up to your active lifestyle, and the wide variety of included eartips ensures you'll get a snug-yet-comfortable fit. These 'phones are made to go deeper in your ears than Polk's other UltraFit in-ear models, which means they naturally reduce outside noise. Soft, bendable ear clips keep them firmly in place so you can keep on rocking out no matter how tough the going gets.

Control your iPhone® or iPod® with ease
The UltraFit 3000's in-line remote lets you switch seamlessly between phone calls and music on select Apple® devices, without interrupting your workout. You can answer and end calls, control your music's volume, and pause, play, or skip through your songs. Plus, a built-in microphone lets you enjoy hands-free conversations on your iPhone.

Pick the cable length that's right for you
The UltraFit 3000 includes two tangle-resistant, Kevlar®-reinforced cables to match your listening style. A long 41" cable lets you wear your music player on your waist or in your pants pocket, while the short 14" cable makes a convenient connection to an iPod tucked into an armband holder or shirt pocket. Or, you can unplug the extension cables altogether, and hook the headphones straight into an iPod nano®, iPod shuffle®, or other MP3 player clipped to your shirt collar. The UltraFit 3000s come with a soft, zippered case for storage, and a clothing clip to help keep them in place while you're on the move.

    Features

UltraFit Series Sports Headphone: Polk Audio designed their new UltraFit Series Sport Headphones to enhance your headphone listening experience while enduring your most demanding workouts, comfortably. The Polk Audio UltraFit Series Sport Headphones are engineered for comfort, performance, and durability. You'll appreciate how they fit and stay put even through the roughest workouts. You'll also be impressed and delighted by the dynamic sound quality of the UltraFit Sport Headphones. The UltraFit 3000 even offers an in-line remote + mic, so you can control your iPod or answer your iPhone on the go.

Dynamic Balance: Co-developed with the Johns Hopkins Center for Non-Destructive testing, Dynamic Balance is a design tool that enables Polk Audio engineers to pinpoint the elements that negatively impact driver performance. These same engineers then carefully control materials, interfaces, and geometries; resulting in a headphone with great sound.

Dynamic Balance Polymer Drivers: UltraFit Sport Headphones employ dynamic drivers much like those in a Polk Audio full size speaker; they're just a lot smaller (6mm). To meet Polk's predetermined performance parameters, their engineers took the same care designing these drivers as Polk Audio large speaker drivers; even adding a discrete crossover filter to each driver to naturalize the high frequencies.

Ported Enclosures: UltraFit Sports Headphones are ported, since there is the port (ear piece) you put in your ear. There are also very small channels in the back of the driver enclosure, beneath the Polk logo. These are crucial to tuning the driver's frequency response peaks. And that means a better sounding pair of headphones.

Moisture Shield: The UltraFit 3000 headphones employ Moisture Shield to protect the headphones during your workout. Moisture Shield consists of a thin scrim on UltraFit 3000 driver screen. This filter material resists moisture that could get to the driver; so the headphones can keep performing through strenuous activity. Moisture Shield also provides an acoustic barrier to help smooth frequency response.

SecureFit Support: SecureFit Support is a flexible ear hook that wraps around your ear, so the earpiece stays in place. With SecureFit Support, you'll experience a snug yet comfortable fit. Now, you can put your headphones on and forget about them during your workout.

StayFit Eartips: Properly fitted eartips help you to eliminate extraneous noise, experience greater bass response, and enjoy better tonal balance. Eartips that fit correctly also feel more comfortable. No two person's ears are exactly the same, so Polk includes a variety of StayFit silicone and memory foam eartips to ensure a secure and comfortable fit for optimum audio performance.

    • Silicone Eartips: 3 pair of round silicone eartips (Small/Medium/Large) and 2 pair of three-flanged silicone eartips (Small/Large) are included.
    • Memory Foam Eartips: 2 pair (Small/Large) of memory foam ear tips are also included.

Noise Reduction: The UltraFit 3000 provides a high level of noise reduction, thanks to the sealed inner-ear fit you get from the included silicone and memory foam eartips.

Ultra Flexible Tangle-Free Planar Audio Cable: Standard round headphone cables always coil up and twist; and are a constant source of annoyance, because they get in the way of your workout. Eventually repetitive twisting means the cable will break or pull out at the end. The UltraFit's planar design (with oxygen-free wire for better conductivity) completely eliminates coiling, so the headphone cables won't tangle up during a workout, or when stored away. The planar design also eliminates micro-phonics, the tendency of an electronic device to turn a mechanical vibration into "noise," which you would hear, in this case, through the headphones.

StrainGuard: Sports headphones get a lot of abuse. UltraFit Sports Headphones have been designed with this in mind. StrainGuard is a protective system that addresses the areas where sports headphones fail most often. A Kevlar core that houses the speaker wire provides extra tensile strength to prevent the wire from being pulled apart at common failure points. The other points of common failure in sports headphones are at transitional points between cable lengths and at connection points. In the UltraFit Series, all transitional connections are computer designed to strengthen the points where they fail most.

3 Cable Lengths: UltraFit Series headphones come with three cable length options, so you can wear your music device the way that works best for you. The attached 14" headphone cable lets you clip your portable music player to your shirt collar (with included shirt-clip), an included 41" headphone extension cable enables you to wear your music player on your waist or pants pocket, while the supplied 14" headphone extension cable lets you wear your iPod nano, iPod shuffle, or other MP3 players on a t-shirt sleeve.

Note: The 41" headphone extension cable is the only cable that included the in-line remote/mic.

3.5mm Connector: All UltraFit Sports Headphones employ a gold-plated 3.5mm connector that has been designed to fit through the opening on most portable audio player cases.

Note: A 2.5mm adapter is also included for select mobile devices, such as Nokia.

3-Button Remote Control + Mic: The UltraFit 3000 features a 3-button remote & microphone (located on the 41" headphone extension cable) so you can use your iPod, iPhone, or iPad on the go with in-line controls. The in-line remote lets you initiate play/pause, change tracks, adjust volume, or take a call (iPhone only) without ever touching your player. The in-line microphone supports both voice control (for iPod/iPhone/iPad) and hands-free communication (iPhone only). The UltraFit 3000 is "Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad" compatible and supports the following models and functions (as of 12/28/2011).

    Polk Audio UltraFit 3000

Written By Mike D, Carthage, NC on Thursday, August 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these "$100" headphones free with another purchase. They have several optional ear bud options which is nice. Some are better than others, personal preference I suppose. The optional short and long cord is a nice touch so you can use an arm band without a long cord to deal with. The only down side I experienced is that the junction that allows you to have two different cords makes the cord heavier and that can be annoying while running. These head phones did not work with my generation 1 ipod shuffle but it worked fine with a Gen 3 nano and Iphone 4. As far as noise reduction, it depends on which buds you use. The memory foam ones work well for that but some of the others less so. It is nice to have options.
    Pros:
Lots of ear bud options. Two cords. Good, full sound.
    Cons:
cord can be a little heavy with the volume control and cord junction

    Earbuds

Written By BillM, Maine on Sunday, July 29, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have used them a short time. They fit well and stay in place, for earbuds they do a fair job of noise cancellation. They are comfortable for extended periods. The wiring harness on the earphones is very short and another wire must be plugged in to make the earphones usable. The package contains extra wire and different sizes of fittings for the ear plugs.
    Pros:
good sound, comfortable, moderate noise reduction
    Cons:
headphone wires should be longer so an extra wire doesn't have to be plugged in to make the set usable

    Poor Sound

Written By Mark, Philadelphia, PA on Thursday, July 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these strictly for running outdoors. I thought by dropping the extra coin on headphones I would get amazing sound quality. Nope. They sound dull, tinny, no bass, no sound quality. I read the tips to try different ear buds (they are interchangeable), however did not change anything except comfort. I think the design and comfort of these is good, just the sound is awful. I have a 12.99 pair of Sony's that sound twice as good.. Unfortunately I am beyond the return window.
    Pros:
comfort, style, long cord is nice
    Cons:

    Misrepresented

Written By ALA, Brooklyn, NY on Wednesday, June 20, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was replacing a damaged Monster iSport pair. When I received the Polk packaging it looked top quality and and carefully unboxed the headphones. When I pulled the in ear plugs out of their insert I was immediately shocked. They felt and looked cheap plastic. They were actually not appealing at all. Nevertheless, I insterted the foam tips and tried them on. They do not comfortably rest around ear or feel secured inside your ear. The music sounded tinny and very flat. I took them to the gym with and there it all went wrong. The headphone jack has to be connected to either a long or short wire to plug into your iPod. Once you think it is connected it would either cut the music off or become barely audible and often change from left to right. You have to jiggle the jack back into the insertion. Unbelievable!! It fell out my ears twice whil I ran on a treadmill and kept distorting everytime I used weights near my chest or if they were tugged every so gently. These are the most un-sport headphones I ever used. And they sound awful like a pair of $5.99 phones. Unacceptable. I am sending them back right away. Going back to Monster iSport.
    Pros:
The packaging is VERY impressive and pleasing.
    Cons:
The actual product is extremely inferior, poorly constructed and sounds awful.

    Expensive and poor quality

Written By Argueta, Puerto Rico on Thursday, June 14, 2012

This headphones are extremely expensive for what you get. I have had Bose products all my life however I was attracted by the sweat proof feature of the Polk. This headphones are functional but the price tag based on the built quality should be $50. Sound quality is fair however they are very uncomfortable. I will return them and get the Bose in ear.
    Pros:
    Sweat proof
    Cons:
    High price and bad quality.

    Polk UltraFit 3000

Great sounding quality ear'buds". Secure during active sports, and appear to be of quality construction. I am hearing (while ice skating) sound I didn't know was in my content, especially in the base and lower treble range. A variety of ear bud shapes and sizes ensure a good fit.
    Pros:
Great sounding, stay in place securely, light but well made. Extra buds and cord lengths allow custom fit. Reasonable price.
    Cons:
    none

Awesome ear buds, better than the Dre Beats

Written By Steve, North Potomac, MD on Saturday, January 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I first purchased the Monster Dre Beats and ended up exchanging them for these Polk Ultra Fit 3000s. The Dre Beats stayed secure over my ear but not in the ear very well. These Polks have a snug over ear fit but the best thing is that the over ear hook is flexible/bendable so the ear buds stay in your ear. The sound quality is great and they stay snug in and on my ear while at the gym. These are the ear buds to get if you exercise or move around a lot.
    Pros:
Fit snug over and in the ear. Sound quality.

    Good Sound Quality, functionally challenging

Written By AK, Acrata, CA on Monday, January 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is better than a few other earbuds I've tried for sure. The challenging part is dealing with the mic/volume control that ends up halfway down to my belly button. While in the gym, or out cycling- especially on the bike, I'd much rather the design featured the mic/controls up close to my mouth! I find it difficult that the big plug in where the "longer" section that has the mic/control, is past the big fat junction, intead of the other way around. When I was shopping for a quality earbud set with mic, I wanted it to be much more functionally easy to use than this set up. The earbuds stay in place pretty well, but you do have to fiddle with them some in order to et them "adjusted" to your ears.
    Pros:
Good Sound, Stays On ears during workout.
    Cons:
Bad Mic/control placement- past the plug in for the longer cord. Must fiddle with earbuds to get them to stay put.

    So Far So Good

Written By Kubs, Scarborough, ON on Thursday, January 19, 2012

Had these headphones for a month now - got them on sale from Crutchfield Canada. Main use for me is sitting in my office working away with my music.
    Pros:
Impressive sound. Bass exceeded expectation. Fortunately comes with many sizes and styles of ear inserts. I had to go through them ALL to find what fit best. iPod control is great for skipping songs and volume control. Another plus is when they are off your head - you can't hear much noise coming out of the headphones. A good thing.
    Cons:
They really need to sit in your ears just right, or you lose the quality sound. You need to keep pushing them in; even a simple yawn will have them moving out of your ear.

    Polk Audio UltraFit 3000

Written By Adam, Raleigh, NC on Tuesday, January 17, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The headphones are quite comfortable and I've been impressed by the sound quality. However, I do have concerns about their long-term durability. After wearing them less than two weeks, the headphones developed an issue with the volume control button on the cord and kept randomly muting my iPhone. Crutchfield's customer service was excellent though and I received a replacement pair a couple days later.
    Pros:
    Comfort, sound quality

    Polk Audio UltraFit 3000

These headphones are a welcome addition as far as comfort. I where them 8 hours a day at work. I do need to push them in my ear once in a while, but they never fall out completely. The music on my new ip 4s is clean enough for a construction site. However I don't think it is worth the price. The other issue is the only mic and volume button is on the long cord and combined with the connection plug it is a big chunky mess hanging on my chest. I wish I went a different route.
    Pros:
I really like the way they fit stay in ears very well. For listening to music on my iPhone 4s the sound is as good as my $9.00 set.
    Cons:
If you want to use them for phone calls the sound quality is weak. Also no voice canceling that I can tell

Great product! Every lightweithg set of headphones I tried so far offered marginal sound and just would not stay in my ear especially when working out at the gym. The earbuds that come with I Pods are a waste and don't do justice to a geat product. Right out of the box these Polk headphones proved to be comfortable, offered great sound (they actually offer better sound with my I Pod that listening to my almost $20,000 Krell system) and they just don't fall off. These are the perfect headphones. Buy them!
    Pros:
    comfortable and sound quality
    Cons:
    pricy but worth it

    Headphone review

Great headphones, I am interested to see how well they stand up to rigorous athletic events. Ran one Marathon so far, held up well. Typically headphones die after too much sweat, so far these are working well. The control buttons on the cable are great (use with an iPod touch). Allows you to change songs and volume, very useful. So far great product.
    Pros:
    Sound quality, iPod control buttons
    Cons:
Hard to get an exact fit, but there are many options and after a while you can figure out which pads work best for your ears.
