JL Audio

Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

Our take on the JL Audio CP108LG-W3v3

by Dominic Devito

Engineered for performance

JL Audio's CP108LG-W3v3 MicroSub enclosed subwoofer system delivers impressive bass without needing a lot of power or taking up much space. This MicroSub handles up to 250 watts RMS, housing one 8" W3v3 subwoofer that offers impressive low end. The enclosure is designed from the ground up to get optimum performance from its driver, so you get much more than just a box with a speaker inside.

JL Audio uses state-of-the-art automated woodworking equipment to fabricate the high-quality MDF enclosure with rugged automotive carpeting, a steel-mesh grille, 5-way binding posts, and solid internal wiring. The enclosure is finished and inspected by hand at the manufacturing facility in Florida to ensure that you get the bass that you expect from JL Audio.

Small enclosure, big sound

The specially designed, slot-ported enclosure measures just over 6-1/2 inches thick, so it'll fit just about anywhere. Features

Overview: The CP108LG-W3v3 PowerWedge subwoofer system is a compact bass solution for the vehicle with limited space. This ported enclosure is loaded with a single, 4-ohm 8W3v3 woofer.

Enclosure Design: The enclosure features top-quality MDF (medium-density fiberboard), constructed using state-of-the-art CNC woodworking equipment, and covered with high-grade automotive carpeting. The driver is protected by a black steel-mesh grille. Internally, the enclosure is equipped with JL Audio's ECL wiring from the woofer to the 5-way binding post connectors. The port and binding posts are on the left side of the enclosure.

Dimensions:

  • Width: 18-5/8"
  • Height: 11-1/8"
  • Depth:
    • 5-1/8" (enclosure)
    • 6-5/8" (including grille)

Flared Port: The enclosure has a side-firing flared slot-port. The flared slot-port design minimizes turbulence and improves fidelity. The port is 1-1/2" high and 4" wide at the opening.

Driver: The 8" W3v3 driver has the following features:

  • Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W3v3 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.
  • Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.
  • Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC): The Vented Reinforcement Collar is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability. By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC greatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weaknesses. It does this by greatly increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes. the VRC also feature slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings to reduce thermal compression effects and enhances reliability.
  • Spider/Lead Wire Assembly: The W3v3 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly which is assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. The spider is insert-molded into a composite carrier tray which also incorporates the terminal assembly and lead wire strain relief features for enhanced reliability and optimal alignment of parts. The flying lead wires are carefully controlled and strain-relieved without resorting to woven-in lead wires, which can degrade spider performance.
  • Elevated Frame Cooling: The elevated frame design of the W3v3 delivers high-velocity air flow through slots directly above the top plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.
  • Surround Stress Relief: By creating a radiused feature on the edge of the cone, stress is relieved from the surround material at maximum forward excursion, resulting in longer life and more consistent surround behavior.
  • Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer comes with a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase optional grille mesh inserts which are specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.

Fantastic Little Sub!

Written By Dave K., Farmington, UT on Sunday, June 02, 2013

This thing is amazing! I was looking to replace a Sound Ordnance powered sub that quit working after 2 weeks of use, and what a way to go. I have it in a 2011 F150 Supercrew and for it's size you can't do any better. It is powered by a JL120 mono amp which is a good combination. I have it paired with Boston Acoustics SE85s in the doors that are powered by a Boston Acoustics GTA504 amp. I left the factory head unit in because I didn't want to loose the sync system, and all I can say is..... WOW!!!!!! The bass is very tight and fills the room without all of the window and molding shaking that annoys everyone around you. I was hoping to fit it behind the rear seat but it is a little too deep so under the back seat it goes. If you aren't sure about this sub I say do it! One purchase I have never regretted. A bit pricy but worth every penny.
Pros:
Huge sound from a small box. Great build quality. The embroidery is a nice touch.

JL Audio 8W3: Very Impressive

Written By nickygnar, Annapolis, MD on Tuesday, May 28, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this sub to replace an older JL Audio 12W1 in a ported box to reclaim some trunk space in the back of my Honda CR-V. Obviously it's not nearly as loud as a 12" woofer, but still plenty punchy and the slot port built into the box really helps accentuate the lows. Surprisingly clear, low bass for an 8" woofer running off of a 250/1. Build quality is standard JL- top notch. The box is very well made and the terminals are dead simple to use and provide a clean contact patch with the wire. Even though it seems a little expensive for what it is, I'm very happy with my purchase.
Pros:
Solid, well-made box; easy to connect; clear, quality sound; fits underneath the picnic table in a Honda CR-V
Cons:
A little pricey

The little subwoofer that could!

Written By Jeff the golfer, Metro Detroit on Wednesday, May 22, 2013

I've read a lot reviews about this sub but it was primarily used in trucks. Since I own a car, I was hesitant about buying this. The main reason I purchased this is because I wanted my trunk space back that the JL Audio 10 in. W-7 enclosure took up. Now it's no W-7 but for an 8 inch sub it thumps. My JL Audio HD 750/1 (used for the W-7) is overkill for this sub but after talking to the technician it's been calibrated properly for this sub. For car applications, I suggest if you own a car with folding back seats, open them up so you can hear the sub without turning up the volume and risk blowing it.
Pros:
size and sound
Cons:
a little pricey but it is a JL Audio product which is a good thing.

Not as good as I hoped

Written By Anonymous, Vincennes, IN on Saturday, April 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an alpine m500 pushing it. It's in the trunk of a Mustang Convertible The bass doesn't come through real well with the top down. I was hoping for a little more. It starts clipping pretty easily from the amp. I may not have it dialed in properly. A lot of people talked about how hard this hit, but maybe mine hasn't broken in yet or amp not adjusted the best.

Pros:
Great size for a convertible. It was easy to connected.
Cons:
Hope it will start hitting harder soon.

This Sub is Filthy (That's a Good Thing)

Written By Bossman, Pittsburgh, PA on Friday, December 07, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like many others here, I purchased this sub after reading the rave reviews posted on this sight. It seems that most have installed this in crew cab trucks and cars, but I stuck mine in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I haven't installed a sub system for a few years and missed it. I'm not into earth shattering bass, but still wanted something with cojones. I hooked this up with a JL Audio 250W Amp, and the sound is excellent. To round out the system are some JL 6"x9"s and and basic 6"s in the front off a Kenwood receiver. Not a single person has believed me that the sound is coming from one 8" sub. I can't imagine being happier with this system, which in total cost less than a $1k. In one word, filthy!

Great Sound

Written By C. Russell, Harrisburg, NC on Monday, November 19, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a 92 Chevy Silverado Single Cab, and really do not have alot of room for subs, so I had been researching the best fit. After lot of thought and looking, I settled on these subs. I ended up installing a pair of them on a Kenwood 400w amp, and it blew me away the quality of sound. These 2 8 inch subs provide more than plenty of bass in the truck, and they will rattle your brains without a lot of noise outside of the truck. Have a small vehicle and limited space? Perfect choice!
Pros:
Great sound, Easy to install, Quality built
Cons:
None that I can come up with

Great Product

Written By Eric K., Pensacola, FL on Sunday, November 04, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The other reviews made me buy this product and I'm glad that I did! It really does give you a lot of bass for it's size. I thought it would fit under the back seat of my 2004 F-150 extra cab, but it didn't and I had to get a seat lift kit to fit my amp under the middle and the JL box under the driver's side. Both are now well hidden and the JL stealthbox sounds great. This box is perfect if you want great sound inside without getting pulled over by the police for the sound outside! It's a little on the expensive side, but I'm confident in the quality and the fact that it will last. There's not much out there that will fit under a back seat and sound this good!
Pros:
Quality, Sound
Cons:
Cost

Fantastic sub for trucks

Written By Greg, Santa Barbara, CA on Wednesday, October 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This little sub fits great in my Nissan Frontier extra-cab. Since I rarely have more than 1-2 passengers, I removed the rear jump-seat behind the driver's seat and put the JL sub in it's place. It fits neatly on the shelf where the seat used to be and occupies about the same amount of space. This allows me to still utilize as much of the extra-cab as possible for my stuff while filling out the low frequencies in my music that I wanted from a sub. It sounds great and hits plenty hard for me in the small truck cab. I would highly recommend this sub!
Pros:
Compact, well built, and sounds great.
Cons:
None

1998 BMW M3 w/ JL Audio Micorsub

Written By hjsna, Rockledge, FL on Sunday, August 26, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1998 BMW M3 which I use for my business. After the factory speakers went out I replaced them with Polks Audio MM5251 for the front and MM 691 for the rears. Running them from the factory amp was a disgrace to the Polk Audio brand. My installer told be I would blow the speakers if I had too much bass coming out. So I decided to get a JL Audio XD 700/5 five channel amp and bypass the factory amp. I needed a good sub. But I wanted it in the cabin not in the trunk. My installer recommended the Kicker Hideaway, but I did some research and decided to go with the JL Audio 8 inch Microsub, especially since it was ported. It delivers more than enough bass and then some to shake my rear view mirror. I also have the remote bass controller for the amp, I highly recommend this so you can adjust the bass quickly without messing with the head unit when you are driving. Anyway this sub is too big to fit under the seat, and I don't think I wanted one under the seat if it was going to cause vibrations to the passenger. It fits perfectly right in front of my rear seat, in the footwell area without any straps. It takes a little space from that area, but someone can still sit there and the rear seat is rarely used in my car anyway. And since I have a black interior it blends in. This sub delivers tight bass and it is more than I need- exactly what I wanted. I high recommend this setup!! I would put this setup in any car. Most importantly I highly recommend this Microsub!!
Pros:
Compact, easy install, nice tight bass, excellent sound, stealth
Cons:
Too big to mount under some seats, slightly expensive but worth it.

Great Sub!

Written By CostelloIT, Longwood, FL on Saturday, August 04, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first the price can initmidate you because there are boxes with 2 10"s that are close in price. I was looking for a speaker that would not consume my whole trunk space. This sub is able to produce great bass (everyone who hears it cannot believe it is one 8" sub). The size is very small so it does not consume a lot of space either. I can say that although I am very happy with it, if you want to be the person who has bass so intense it shacks the mirrors of the car behind you, this may not do it for you. If you are looking for great bass that shakes your own mirrors, and not consume your whole trunk, this will deliver the results you are looking for.

I recommend to get a amp that when bridged runs at 4ohm so it matches the sub. I bought a Rockford Fostgate that when bridged was 200watts at 4ohm and it is awesome!
Pros:
small size, amount of bass, look
Cons:
Cannot think of any

Awesome compact sub!!

Written By dquangt, Seattle, WA on Saturday, July 28, 2012

i have a rav4 with a hidden recessed trunk space that i wanted to put a sub in. its not a large area so this fit the bill perfectly. i had reservations about it being only 8" but with the great reviews i felt i should give it a try. boy am i really glad i did.

i am powering it with the jl audio 700/5 amp and the pioneer 8400 dvd headunit. the amp provides more than enough power and the sub has a great clean sound. the only reason i give "sound quality" a 4 instead of five is because it can't quite reproduce certain low notes in the music i listen to like a larger sub can, but honestly 90% of the time i don't notice or care. the sub is pretty amazing and fills out the sound perfectly. it allowed me to not only keep my install totally stealth, but its so small that i even have half of the hidden trunk space left to store items when i need too.

great job jl audio!
Pros:
small size, clean sound, quality build

none

JL Audio 8" subwoofer

Written By Robert, Upland, california on Monday, July 16, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agree with the reviews of everyone else on this product. I just got finished installing a new Alpine head unit, and Alpine components speakers which are powered by a 4 channel Alpine amp. I powered this 8" sub with a 300 watt Alpine mono amp and it rocks. I formally had this same amp powering two 10" speakers and the sound quality from the 8" is amazing. No need for two of them. This entire system went into my 2008 crew cab Chevy Duramax, with the sub easily fitting underneath the rear bench seat. For the person wanting a well rounded system, I would definitely buy this subwoofer. You can't beat it for its performance, size and cost.
Pros:
Very compact and affordable
Cons:
None that I can think of

Not what I was looking for.

Written By Rob, San Diego, CA on Tuesday, May 22, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not exactly what I was looking for. I own a 2006 BMW 330i 4DR sedan and I was hoping to save space in my trunk. I read a few reviews from this site, and people were making claims that this unit hit as hard as two 10's. Not even close! I guess this is a "truck" cab style of box, so of course it is gonna sound loud, but BMW's sound proof there trunks (which I did not know), so this little box isn't gonna cut it. Thank goodness for the 60 day return policy. So now I ordered the JL Audio CS110-WXv2, should be here any day now. I'll let you guys know how it sounds.
Pros:
Build quality, nice look.
Cons:
Not an in the trunk type subwoofer.

Space saving, hard working sub!

Written By DR Woods, Denver, CO on Tuesday, May 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this JL subwoofer to replace a great sounding JBL single 12" sub. I get the same deep low base from this 8" and it's a third the size of the JBL. Very good build quality and easy hookup. I especially like the embroidered "made in America" stitched into the covering. Great sub at a good price.
Pros:
Nice eye candy. Quality construction. Easy hookup. A great opportunity to by US made quality.
Cons:
Use good judgement when selecting the right size sub for your application. I have a small vehicle and this JL sub really fills the bill.

Must have for those that drive trucks!

Written By CoreyBH25, St. Louis, MO on Wednesday, May 09, 2012

I just had this box put in my truck yesterday and I felt more than obligated to write a review on every website I could find that sold this box. I have a 2012 F150 FX4 SuperCrew. This truck came with everything EXCEPT bass in the speakers. First off everyone knows that JL Audio makes amazing products. The box itself is as small as it gets which makes everyone skeptical on its performance which is expected. When they brought my truck around I heard the bass and was impressed but when I stepped inside to leave... I had to turn the bass down ALL the way because it was so loud. All the reviews, people said they thought they had a pair of 10's or 12's in their truck and I 100% believe them! I have had two 10" kickers in a ported box before and this hits just as hard! It fits under my seat perfectly and you can't even see it! This thing is amazing!
Pros:
Perfect size, AMAZING sound, and more bass than anyone would need!

Big sound from a small subwoofer

Written By Kaiekahi, Kapaa, HI on Friday, May 04, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I got this in the mail I didn't expect it to be so tiny. After hooking this up to the MTX TD500.1D running 300 watts RMS, all I can say is "wow". I can't believe this is only an 8" subwoofer. It hits the lows superbly. I can't wait for it to be broken in so I can really see what this can handle.
Pros:
Loud clean bass, small size makes it perfect for my 2008 2 door wrangler.
Cons:
A bit pricey but well worth it.

This sub unit is unbelievable,I've had it for ove a year now and just got it installed this past saturday. Along with the jvc-av50 deck-infinity kappa 2-way 6x9's-infinity kappa 6.75's-infinity kappa 5 channel amp. All in a 2008 Nissan Frontier crew cab. It took my sub a few hours to break in but afther that all i can say is WOW!!!!!! this sub sounds like two brand name 10's and for it to keep up with the kappas it has to be one heck of a sub. By the way the sub is only getting 200 watts.

Just an all out great subwoofer system
