Dual

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Dual XML8150

by Ken Nail

iPod® and iPhone® lovers — here's the receiver for you

Dual designed the XML8150 digital media receiver with an integrated flip-out dock that provides a direct connection and mount for your iPhone® or iPod®. You can adjust the mount for vertical or horizontal orientation of your device, whatever works best with the layout of your dashboard. You can use the controls on the receiver or your iPod to access your tunes, and the receiver dock keeps your device charged as you drive, too.

Dual XML8150

Even more ways to play your tunes

The XML8150 won't play CDs, but you sure won't be at a loss for entertainment. You can use the receiver's front-panel auxiliary input to connect a Dock & Play satellite radio, an MP3 player, or other audio source. You can also use the USB input or SD card slot to play back music files — it's like having a CD changer built into the player.

Dual XML8150

Built-in Bluetooth®

It's time to quit fumbling for your phone when you're driving, as this Dual offers hands-free calling with any compatible phone. When a call comes in, the XML8150 mutes your music, while you conduct your conversation over your vehicle's speakers. If you've got music stored on your mobile device, you'll appreciate how Bluetooth audio streaming lets you listen to your favorite music without plugging in your phone.

Your system, your sound

This Dual's sound controls are a definite step up from most factory systems. The 3-band parametric equalizer lets you adjust the levels and slope of specific frequencies, making it easy to custom tune the audio output to your liking. If you like a one-button approach, select from one of the seven preset EQ curves. Three sets of preamp outputs simplify hooking up amps, and you can even control the level of bass with the subwoofer level control.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Dual stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Dual, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Auxiliary Input:  The XML8150 features a front-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for temporary connecting an external portable audio device, such as a portable MP3 player.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Built-in Bluetooth: Bluetooth hands-free communication is built into the Dual XML8150, making it easy to integrate a Bluetooth enabled cellular phone (up to 10). Bluetooth is a two-way wireless communication system allowing you to make & receive cell phone calls, or stream digital audio from your Bluetooth enabled phone on the XML8150 digital media receiver.

    • Hands-free Communications (HFP): The built-in Bluetooth hands-free feature allows you to talk on your cell phone through the XML8150 without the need of holding it in your hand, which helps avoid any traffic violations by keeping you focused on the road. Incoming calls will be automatically appear on the display and a ring tone will heard through your car speakers. You can answer a call from the head unit or have the head unit automatically answer any incoming calls. You can dial a number from the head unit or the included remote control. In addition, you can view a list of the 10 most recent phone calls dialed, received, or missed. The XML8150 even supports call waiting. An external microphone is included for better audio performance (no integrated front-panel mic).
    • Audio Streaming (A2DP/AVRCP): The built-in Bluetooth audio streaming feature allows you to stream digital audio from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone to the XML8150 & control the playback of the audio through the head unit.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some mobile devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the XML8150.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Dual XML8150 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, scan, & preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The built-in AM/FM tuner allows you to store up to 18 FM station presets and 12 AM station presets. You can tune your presets manually or have the head unit do it automatically.

Scan Tuning: Press the Scan button on the included remote control to preview strong stations on the current band, pausing for five seconds at each. Press Scan again to select station or cancel the function.

Local: The Local function allows only strong radio stations to be received, blocking stations with weaker signals.

European Tuning: You can switch the tuner between USA or European tuning.

HD Radio Ready (with iTunes Tagging): HD Radio operation requires connection of the Dual HDM90 HD Radio tuner (070HDM90, sold separately). With HD Radio you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. The Dual HDM90 HD Radio tuner is also capable of iTunes tagging. iTunes tagging gives you the ability to tag a song (up to 64) and stores it to a connected iPod. The next time your iPod is connected to iTunes, the tagged songs are displayed with the option to purchase them from the iTunes Store.

Note: This function can be operated with the following iPod/iPhone models - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen), & iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4/4S).

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Dual XML8150 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the XML8150 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the XML8150 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 60 watts x 4 channels (240 watts total)

Preset EQ Curves: The Dual CD Receiver features the following preset EQ curves to customize your music listening - Flat, Pop, Jazz, Classic, Beat, Rock, or User.

3-Band EQ: The User Preset EQ setting allows you to adjust the unit's 3-Band EQ.

Band Selectable Center Frequency Quality Factor Level
    Bass 60, 80, 100, or 200Hz 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0 -6 to +6 dB
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.5 kHz 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25 -6 to +6 dB
    Treble 10, 12.5, 15, or 17.5 kHz N/A -6 to +6 dB

Loudness: The Loudness function enhances the bass & treble frequencies at low volumes.

2V/6Ch Preamp Outputs: The Dual XML8150 is equipped with three pair of 2-Volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front & rear speakers are fading, while the subwoofer output is non-fading. The subwoofer preamp output's level can be adjusted independently from 0-12. Adjusting the subwoofer level to 0 turns the subwoofer output off.

Subwoofer Control: The unit's non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs feature a variable low-pass filter (80, 120, 160Hz, or Off) and output level (0-12).

Source Volume Level: The Source Volume Level control allows a gain adjustment for each audio source (Tuner, iPod, Aux, SD/SDHC, and USB). You can set the source volume level (+/-6dB) for each mode, depending on the relative volume of each audio source.

Program Volume: You can se the XML8150 to power-on to the same volume level (1-46) every time.

Key Beep: When this function is enabled, every button press will output a beep tone.

    Display Features

Fold-Down Front-Panel: The head unit's front panel folds down to access the unit's SD-card slot and integrated iPod dock. The front-panel display needs approximately 2" of clearance in front of it to open.

Works fine... interface seems a bit odd to me but sound is great. But I'm not using built in amp so I can only evaluate as a receiver/preamp.
    Pros:
Has both a USB and AUX input!

    Great receiver for price

I was looking for an inexpensive radio for my old truck that would work with my iPod instead of having a CD or cassette. This Dual receiver filled the bill and more. It also has a really good bluetooth interface with an included microphone that works well with my iPhone. My wife says I sound clearer using the bluetooth with the sun-visor mounted microphone than when I use my phone by itself! The iPod dock looks a little weird but it works great - or I can connect the iPod with a cable to the USB connection on the front face. The SD card slot inside is another feature that is an excellent "extra" as far as what I expected to find. I had some trouble at first when I copied a number of albums to an SD card. I copied the albums each to their own file folder and only the first one would play. I had to move all the songs to the root file for the receiver to play through the full list. Not the best solution, but it works.
    Pros:
All the features I wanted and more. 18 FM presets, 12 AM presets, iPod dock, SD card slot, USB & 1/8" stereo Aux input, bluetooth with included microphone for cell phone hands free function.
    Cons:
Control buttons are a little small, SD card reader doesn't seem to read seperate album files.

    Pretty good sound

The Dual XML8150 has quite good sound and of course if a very good value. I don't think it is particularly intuitive in use but reading the instructions helps! Unfortunately the wiring harness provided (at a cost) for my old Mercedes 300D Turbo was not particularly helpful. The 300D runs its four speakers through a fader and connects its grounds prior to connection to the fader. Only a right and left positive/negative run from the fader to the OEM unit. To connect the Dual required bypassing the fader, finding the individual grounds and matching to parts of the harness. This would be true of any aftermarket unit I think.
    Pros:
Good sound, inexpensive, fairly easy indash install prompt delivery and quick response to my question about whereabouts of wiring harness (it was stuck under a box flap under the peanuts).
    Cons:
Wiring harness did not really apply to my car.

Great buy, but I found that not all USB sticks work well with the device. Sound quality is good and it was fun using Bluetooth to link my Blackberry for calls. It worked well, and I priced the radio on the web for over $120, so the value was exceptional..
    Pros:
Great value and easy to use features
    Cons:
Sony memory stick would not work well, but others worked fine.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed to add Ipod connectivity to my 03 Jeep Liberty. I purchased an adapter through ebay, only to find out that it was not compatible. I then realized I could get a new head unit from Crutchfield, with all accessories for installation (included for free) for the same price. It turned out great, now am I not only able to make handsfree calls through my speakers with bluetooth, but I am also able to control Pandora through the head unit or remote - without having to mess with the Ipod and take my eyes off the road. I haven't used the dock yet, as I don't want to prematurely wear it out, although the usb port works great. Thanks Crutchfield, it's been a while since I last ordered something from you guys, although now that I am reminded of your great deals and service - I will be coming back to complete my stereo system!
    Pros:
Safe way to listen to your iPod/Pandora and make calls while driving Easy to set up and operate
    Cons:
Some buttons could be a little larger It had frozen a couple of times, although I think it was Pandora's fault

    Buzzes

When I charge my phone and I'm playig music through the aux chord the speakers play a buzzing sound. The USB doesn't charge my phone and I can't play music through it. It also produces a buzzing noise. The buttons are small. It's less than I expected.
    Pros:
    Price
    Cons:
Buzzing when charging. Display buttons. Display too dim.

Well it took me three days to figure out the bluetooth function but it is very easy once you are familiar with it. Sound quality much more than expected for the price. I dont have iphone ipod or any apple products . I stream pandora from my galaxy. My biggest deciding factor was the phone option. So much better than using my speaker phone. It did reset once like the battery was diconnected but only once. Time will tell
    Pros:
    Bluetooth,sound quality,price,price,and price
    Cons:
Instructions left out very important parts about how to stream music. After pairing you need to hit the #4 play pause button . That drove me nuts

    Great for Three Weeks

Written By Max G, Honolulu, HI on Friday, May 24, 2013

This unit was pretty great, especially for the price. However, after about three weeks of use, the built-in iPod dock quit on me completely. I can still use the USB jack for that purpose, but now need to buy some kind of mount for my phone. Also, it would never sync contacts over Bluetooth, don't know why. Looking to probably replace the unit.
    Pros:
Price, ease of install, iPod dock, good Bluetooth microphone
    Cons:
    Crappy build quality
