What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Alpine SWR-1242D

by Steven Johnson
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Big and bad and built for heavy-duty sound, Alpine's SWR-1242D 12" subwoofer delivers high-impact bass that you can hear and feel. Alpine has taken the best features from its previous SWR Series subs and added the hottest technology for ground-pounding power and superb accuracy.

The pulp cone has been reinforced with Kevlar® (the material used in bulletproof vests) for extra rigidity, so it won't buckle under hard play. A rubber surround helps to maximize cone travel for deep bass, while withstanding the decay that can destroy a speaker. A redesigned thermal management system and aluminum airflow motor cover shed heat quickly for efficient operation and better power handling.

The 2" dual 4-ohm voice coils are big enough to handle lots of power while offering system wiring flexibility. The tinsel leads are virtually unbreakable — they're woven into the dual progressive Nomex spiders. An aluminum diecast frame provides a secure, non-resonant housing. The SWR-1242D is designed for use in sealed or ported enclosures.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

    Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-R subwoofer has a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted dust cap of the same material, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of injection molded Santoprene, that allows for an incredible amount of linear excursion and greater SPL.

Mirrored Progressive Nomex Spiders: This subwoofer has twin mirrored progressive Nomex spiders for added stability and mechanical durability. The custom progressive rolls gives the woofer a longer, more linear stroke with maximum centering and restoring force. Special edge control design and Nomex construction provide excellent tear resistance, strength and long-term reliability. The woofer has integrated tinsel speaker leads that are woven into the spiders for the one-sided terminal layout.

Cast Aluminum Frame: The woofer is mounted to a custom cast aluminum frame for added strength. This high mass frame also dissipates heat quickly to make it an integral part of the woofer's thermal management system.

Heat Transfer Plate: This subwoofer contains an integrated heat transfer plate that is thermally coupled to the voice coil. This plate pulls heat away from the voice coil and transfers it to the cast aluminum frame, achieving up to 20% additional power handling, and better reliability.

Magnetically Optimized Motor Structure: Through Alpine's advanced magnetic circuit design, this woofer offers better sound quality, and a higher sensitivity and power handling capability:

    • Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: This patent-pending design intensifies the magnetic field for higher SPL and lower distortion. The magnetic field is balanced over a wider area for better control at high excursion.
    • Extra Length Extended Pole: The extra long pole piece provides additional surface to capture radiated heat for additional power handling.
    • Extra Thick Top Plate: The extra thick top plate keeps more windings in the magnetic gap for better control.
    • Dual Stacked Magnets: The dual stacked magnets provide the powerful magnetic energy and extra depth for high SPL and maximum control.
    • Bumped Back Plate: This "bottomless" design provides extra room for longer cone excursions.
    • Optimally Saturated Pole: The optimally saturated pole reduces magnetically induced heat by eliminating eddy currents throughout the voice coil stroke, and evens flux distribution to eliminate "hot spots."

Multi-Stage Ventilation System: The SWR-1242D has a multi-stage ventilation system with the following features:

    • Cone/Voice Coil Junction Venting: The unique parabolic cone and voice coil attachment piece help to pull cool air into the motor structure.
    • Spider Plateau/Leg Vent System: Two vertical slits are cut into each of the five "legs" of the basket below the spider to allow cool air to flow in and heated air to flow out.
    • Dual Flare Pole Vent: Another part of the thermal management system is the unique dual flare design of the pole vent. This maximizes the flow of cooler air to the voice coil, and results in better power handling.

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 2-ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 8-ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4-ohm load.

Power Handling: This woofer has a total RMS power rating of 500 watts and a total peak power rating of 1500 watts. Each voice coil carries an RMS power rating of 250 watts and a peak power rating of 750 watts.

Push Terminals: The push terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, banana connectors, and dual banana connectors.

Jumpers: The woofer is equipped with two voice coil connection jumpers. These jumpers allow you to wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2-ohm load) or series (for an 8-ohm load).

    Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.57 cu/ft to 1.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Alpine is 0.85 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.75 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Alpine is 1.7 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. A slot port with the following dimensions should be used with the 1.7 cu/ft enclosure: W = 12", H = 1.25", L = 21". If you cannot use a slot port in your enclosure, you will need a port tube with the following dimensions: Diameter = 3", L = 9.9".

    Manual Correction

Recommended Enclosure Volumes: The manual incorrectly lists the recommended enclosure volumes for this subwoofer. The recommended enclosure volumes in the Crutchfield database were obtained directly from Alpine.

Probably the best sub you can get for the money. Give it enough watts and it'll keep you satisfied. Two of these would make your ears bleed.

    Loud but not impressed

Written By Hoogie, Washington State on Tuesday, March 23, 2010

I had 2 of these in a custom built sealed enclosure, built to Alpine specs. Super loud but the sound quality was barely listenable. I was going deaf so I gave one away to a friend and put my remaining speaker in a ported enclosure, which is still loud and has a little better sound quality, but not the kind of sound I was expecting from a sub at this price. My Infinity Reference sub and my cheap pioneer sub I had previously had much higher sound quality running off all the same gear. If you want insanely loud go for it, do not buy expecting good sound quality.

    BOOM!!!

Written By Anonymous, San Diego, CA on Tuesday, March 02, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After being without a system in my car for 12 years, I spent about a week review 10" and 12" subs. My boss is an audiophile and had me get all the spec sheets for 8 different subs and ran them through a software program calculating what each speaker could do maximized specs for custom sized boxes for both ported and sealed.

The 12" Alpine Type R was his recommendation for a 1.75 ft^3 box with a 3" port with length of 11.69". I made the box with the specs he gave me and this thing hits hard!!! Oh my, was I impressed! I'm pushing 500W RMS(250W RMS per voice coil) from Alpine MRP-M500 mono subwoofer amp. I have this baby in a 2004 hondacivic coupe and still have trunk space left over.

Crutchfield service was great and had everthing I needed from them! Would definately recommend this 12" sub to anyone who needs some bump within this price range.

    Amuzing

Written By LS1Proud, Sacramento, CA on Wednesday, February 17, 2010

These subs can't be beat by many of the more expensive competitors. Some of the most amusing things I have read are the people that blew these subs up with amps that did not meet up to the power ratings of the sub. Funny that most don't seem to understand the concept of clipping. It is far easier to blow ANY sub with an amp that is underpowered for the subwoofer in question or speaker for that matter. Sealed is a great box for these subs, yet I have used these in dual-bandpass setups and had awesome results. I have been in the car audio industry for over 10 years now and think those that blew their subs should purchase another set and get an amp to match. Then make up your mind.

I have heard good and bad things about the Alpine Type-R. Let me be the one to tell you that this sub is amazing. It is everything that I was looking for in a
sub. It produces good clean bass. I am powering it with an Alpine M500 amp and it is in a ported box. It sounds amazing and I would definitely recommend this to anyone!

    Affordable Killer Subwoofer

Written By Albie, Haverhill Ma on Thursday, January 07, 2010

Got one of these puppies in a Q-logic Type 2 ported box being fed by the older Alpine 450 mono, 400 watts at 2 ohms. This sucker has been pounding away in my truck for years now and I'm still impressed by the way it keeps thumping and thumping and thumping.. You would be hard pressed to find another subwoofer in this price bracket that could compete with Alpine's awesome design. Huge magnets, thick basket and a sturdy cone contubute to this. 500 watts is childsplay, I have a friend pumping almost 800 watts to this baby in a med. size sealed box, that always makes me lose my lunch. Ive been buying Alpine for over 16 years, time you do too!!

    Amazing!!

Written By Jordan, Jackson, Mississippi on Friday, July 10, 2009

These subs pound and without sacrificing too much SQ. These are SQL subs so if you want loud without much distortion, this is the sub for you.. I have one powered by an alpine mrp-m850 (800 watts rms) in my infiniti i30. This things pounds. I can outdo people with double my money in the trunk. There are louder subs out there, many of which are much more expensive. And many of the subs that are louder than these are pure SPL subs which have no SQ.. (such as the l7's) so if you just like loud bass then yeah go for those, but type r's are so much better in my opinion. My friend can hear me from a mile away.. No exaggeration!! These subs handle more than their power rating also.. Going over their rating is not as big a deal as some make it out to be.. And underpowering your subs is almost worse than over-powering them. Yes, if you over-power or under-power you are running the risk of burning your voice coils.. but i'm confident that it will handle it.. These are some of the best subs out there.. And definitely the best out there in this price range. If you are going to get these.. please do not underpower them.. that would be such a sad sight to burn these up cause you dont have the extra cash to upgrade your amp. Anyway get these.. Trust me you wont be disappointed..

    Exceptional Driver

Written By Wolfox, Dunnellon, FL on Sunday, May 31, 2009

This sub is mounted in a home made, hand built ported box, tuned for 34 Hz. and driven by an Alpine MRP-M500 class-D monoblock. Interior volume is just a tad over 1.7 CuFt. w/4" port. I had to get a little creative with the box shape and batting to get it to all fit within the measly cargo space behind the rear seats in a Blazer T-10. Coils loaded in parallel for a total of 2-ohms are hanging off that 500 Watt monoblock, all I can say is that I am very impressed. Clarity is on par with a sealed system, though sealed would arguable be better- but the port and box tuning allows for controlled low end thumping that can be heard for blocks away. My musical tastes are wide and varied. Rock and disco hit hard without thrumming. Sustained bassnotes in Rap, R&B and electronica/techno are clear, precise and sharply defined without bogging down with drum hits embedded in the deep tones. And she rumbles and roars to the point that the rearview mirror is useless, body panels flex and glass bulges when watching a clip from "Coverfield" - you swear that the monster's going to catch you too!

For the money, the power, precision and the ability for this sub to sucker punch you and steal your lunch money is spot on. But get nerded up on enclosure deigns - She will rip your heart out and shake it off your own tailgate in a second in a properly tuned and made box. Yet at the same time bring out subtleties that will make you claw through your center console to hear that Beethoven CD next.

    Good sub

Written By Ivan, PA on Tuesday, May 12, 2009

    I got one of these
    subs about a year
    ago and had it wired
    to a alpine pdx
    1.600 it sounded
    great. But i used to
    always play my music
    at really loud
    volume so the sub
    ended up blowing
    out. When i popped
    my trunk smoke was
    coming out of the
    sub. Maybe i was
    unlucky or maybe
    they can't handle
    the power but it was
    good while it
    lasted.

    Great Subs

Written By richcneed, Brooklyn, Ny on Friday, April 03, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this sub for a while now and it really hits hard. I always have lots of stuff rolling around in my trunk that my sub got damaged around the cone area and still plays great. I've never seen anything like this before because most subs would be useless after a damage like that. I purchased this sub based on the amount of positive reviews that i read and i'm not dissapointed. Being a Jamaican i listen to a lot of reggae & reggae dancehall and you need great subs to handle the deep baselines of the dancehall riddims. When it comes to subs all i can think of is Alpine which is great quality at a great price.

I've been waiting about 4 months to get 2 of these and an alpine pdx
1.1000 and all i can say is that for the hype i was giving them i was not
dissapointed. These things rattle my throat. I had them playing in front of
my girlfriends house for about 5 minutes before the cops came =]. I still
need to put them in a better box and these subs havent even passed
the "breaking in" stage. I cant wait to hear what they will sound like once i
put the gain past minimum. Great bang for your buck. ALPINE ALL THE WAY

Wow is all i can say about this speaker. If i could i would give it 6 stars. I have just 1 of these bad boys in a 2002 extended cab s10 and it is amazing. I have an Alpine M850 driving this at 2 ohms (800 Watts continuous). And it is a beast. If your wanting something that combines hard pounding bass and good clean sound quality this is the perfect subwoofer for you.
