About the Pioneer DV-563A

Steve Kindig
The DV-563A offers astonishing performance and versatility for its modest price. You can select either progressive-scan or interlaced video output to match the capabilities of your TV. Progressive-scan images look exceptionally sharp and clean thanks to Pioneer's PureCinema™ de-interlacer chip, normally found on their high-end Elite-series players. (The de-interlacer is what converts interlaced-scan video signals to progressive scan.)

If you have a 5.1-channel audio system, the DV-563A will help you give it a real workout! In addition to built-in Dolby® Digital and DTS® decoding for DVD movie soundtracks, this "universal" player will introduce you to the enhanced fidelity of Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio discs. Both formats offer up to 6 channels of sound with resolution that's better than CD! Those additional channels can be used to place you smack in the middle of the performers, or to re-create the acoustic space of, say, a jazz club or concert hall. If you love music, these two formats will bring an exciting new dimension to your listening.

Because it's designed to reproduce these ultra-high-resolution music formats, the DV-563A sounds superb playing your CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs. It can also handle your ultra-long-playing MP3 discs.

Features

Graphical On-screen Displays: For ease of use, this player makes extensive use of graphical on-screen displays, including the Setup Navigator and Disc Navigator.

PureCinema Progressive Scan: Progressive-scan video has less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than the traditional interlaced-scanning method, resulting in a superior picture. To take advantage of this feature, you must have a television with component video inputs that supports the progressive scanning mode. The component outputs on this unit can be set to pass either progressive or interlaced video.

Video D/A Converter: This player uses a 54MHz/10-bit video digital-to-analog converter. This high-bit, high sampling D/A converter helps to reduce digital artifacts to give you a better picture.

Audio D/A Converter: This unit includes an audio digital-to-analog converter capable of providing 192kHz/24-bit and 96kHz/24-bit resolution. The 192kHz/24-bit and 96kHz/24-bit capabilities of this unit allow it to play DVD Video discs with 96kHz/24-bit audio tracks and DVD-Audio discs with sampling rates of 192kHz.

Digital Audio Output Capabilities: When multichannel DVD Audio is played through the digital outputs, it is downmixed to 2-channel stereo before being passed by the digital outputs. Also, depending on the disc, when a DVD-Audio disc using a sampling rate of 192kHz or 176.4kHz is played, the sampling rate will be down-converted to 96kHz for playback through the digital outputs. Some DVD-Audio signals and all SACD signals will be available only through the analog outputs. The digital outputs are capable of passing linear PCM digital signals from DVD Video discs with sampling rates as high as 96kHz. If a DVD Video disc with 96kHz sampling rate is copy-protected, the unit will down-convert the sampling frequency to 48kHz before passing the signal through the digital outputs.

Digital Bass Management: This unit has built-in bass management that allows you to adjust the speaker size, delay time, and channel balance when using the 5.1-channel output.

Multichannel DVD-Audio Playback: DVD-Audio is a multichannel format used for high resolution audio recording. This unit can decode and play DVD-Audio discs with a sampling rate up to 192kHz with a 24-bit word length.

Direct Stream Digital (DSD) Encoding: Unlike PCM based technology (CD/MiniDisc/DVD/Audio DVD, etc.), Super Audio CD is based on DSD encoding, which does not require decimation and interpolation filters. DSD is much simpler and enables a 1-bit signal to be recorded directly. DSD encodes music at 2,822,400 samples per second (64 times that of standard CD) allowing you to hear sound with incredible detail and clarity. DSD combines the advantages of digital recording with the best characteristics of analog sound.

2-Channel and Multichannel SACD Playback: In addition to standard 2-channel CD playback, this unit will play 2-channel and multichannel Super Audio CDs. During SACD playback, the digital outputs do not operate; the analog outputs must be connected to listen to SACDs. There is one set of stereo RCA outputs for standard 2-channel playback, and there is a set of 5.1-channel RCA for multichannel playback. For multichannel playback, the 5.1-channel outputs must be connected to a multichannel input on a receiver or preamp. multichannel SACDs may have 3, 4, 5 or 6 channels of audio.

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level2, Romeo, or Joliet formats. Fixed bit-rate MP3 files are recommended. Variable bit-rate MP3 files are playable, but playing time may not be displayed correctly. Each disc can have a maximum of 999 files and 499 folders.

JPEG Disc Playback: This unit will play back JPEG files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level2, Romeo, or Joliet formats. Baseline JPEG and EXIF 2.1 still image files up to 8 mega-pixels are supported (maximum vertical and horizontal resolution is 5120 pixels). During playback, you can use the JPEG Disc Navigator to find a particular folder or picture by filename. Using the Photo Browser, you can locate a picture within a folder by thumbnail image. Other available functions during JPEG disc playback include: zoom (2x, 4x), slide show playback, and angle adjustment, which allows you to rotate the current image 90-degrees clockwise.

Note: The unit has a PhotoViewer setting that can be set to On or Off. When this setting is turned on and you insert a disc with MP3 audio files and JPEG picture files, you can only view the JPEG picture files. When this setting is turned off, you can play the MP3 audio files.

TruSurround: When playing a Dolby Digital disc, this feature allows you to obtain a surround sound effect from only two speakers.

Zoom: The zoom feature can be used to enlarge any part of the picture by 2x or 4x.

Resume Play and Last Memory: When you stop playback of a DVD or Video CD, "Resume" is shown in the display indicating that you can resume playback from that point. For DVDs, if you take the disc out of the player, the position is stored in memory (Last Memory). This can be done for up to 5 DVDs. For Video CDs, the resume point is cleared when the disc is removed from the player. For DVDs and Video CDs, the resume/last memory point is cleared when the Stop button is pressed more than once.

Video Adjust Memory Presets: You can adjust the following picture quality settings: contrast, brightness, and chroma level. Up to two different combinations of settings can be stored in memory.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Control In/Out: This DVD player has a mini-jack control input and mini-jack control output for use with compatible Pioneer components.
