Outdoor speakers let you move the party outside

Outdoor speakers are built tough -- they laugh at wind, rain and weather. Tuck a pair under your eaves and they'll pump out the tunes to keep everybody smiling and swaying at your next cookout or pool party. We also have some "rock" speakers that blend seamlessly into your landscaped lawn or garden.

Our take on the Russound AirGo™ Powered Outdoor Speaker

by Marshall Chase

AirGo — plug in, turn on, tune up

Your music library may be the greatest, but it's trapped in a world the size of an earbud. How are you and 20 of your closest friends supposed to get it rolling? You like the idea of a great-sounding portable speaker but a little rain could give a whole new meaning to the term "buzz-kill." Russound's AirGo may be just the ticket. Unlike other portable AirPlay®-ready speakers, the AirGo is built to scoff at the weather. So you can dance on the dock, chill on the chaise, party on the patio, and stomp on the stoop — wherever you make your splash, the AirGo can take it.

AirGo party

Your AirPort® won't get shut down by weather

AirGo has a weather-proof compartment designed specifically to house an Apple AirPort Express® (Not included. Not compatible with the new version of AirPort Express announced June 2012). Simply connect the built-in power plug and mini-jack to the AirPort, close the hatch and you're ready for take-off. You can even see the AirPort's status light through a small window in the chamber.

Don't get up to get down

No need to get out of your seat when you want to change up the tunes. You can take full control of your jams right from your iPhone®, iPad® or iPod touch® or laptop. With AirPlay you'll have all the music from your iTunes library on your computer at your command. Wi-Fi® wireless range means you can even leave your iPod indoors while the party rages outdoors. And because the AirPort Express becomes a Wi-Fi hotspot, partygoers with smartphones or tablets can have even more fun and games. Stream PANDORA® Internet radio, Spotify®, audio from movies and videos — the possibilities are virtually endless.

Music made tough — but easy as 1, 2, 3

AirGo Setup

Washing the car, sudden downpours, uncle Joe's cannon ball tsunami, none of these should make you keep your music at a distance. AirGo is built to take it. You can plug in wherever you've got an AC outlet. Stereo tweeters and a 6-1/2" woofer with a beefy built-in amp deliver the sound loud and clear. Best of all, getting up and running couldn't be more user-friendly.

    Great outdoor portable speaker

Written By NateT, Boise, ID on Wednesday, May 01, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would highly recommend this product. All you need is a single outlet, a first gen airport express, and a home wifi setup. Then you can listen to good quality music any were in the area of your wifi signal. Plug it in out back, or move it out front, or the garage, or any other room in the house. Being a single unit all you do is plug it in and wait for you computer to recognize the signal from the airport express inside the back of the speaker(not included). It took me a while to set up the airport express, but that's my fault. Easy once it's set up! Not the highest quality sound but 1-10 I'd give it an 8 for volume and 6 for full spectrum quality so over all a 7.

    Worth it at reduced price!

Written By Jim B, Rocky River, OH on Sunday, April 07, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Glad I did not spend $400. on this unit. Though at $125. it is well worth. Great sound and built for stout. Good opportunity to use your Gen 1 Airport Express on this(plus gives you an excuse to upgrade to Gen 2 AE !).
    Pros:
    - Good + sound - Built for stout ( heavy, space heater size) - Easy to use with Gen 1 Airport Express - Loud powerful amp (2 tweeters 1 woofer)
    Cons:
    - requires 115 volt input ( not cordless) - no volume on unit ( must control from ipod iphone etc) - no stereo separation

Great outdoor speaker (if the price is right)

Written By Mike, Madison, WI on Tuesday, March 26, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two of these speaker units from Crutchfield, one for the breezeway and one for the back deck of my house. I had a couple of unused Apple Airport Express units already on hand and not currently used. With the price here (significantly less expensive than list) this is a great deal. Good quality speaker, good sound quality, super-robust outdoor speaker with silly easy networking. If you look back at the reviews online for this speaker, they're uniformly positive except for the price. That's fixed now!
    Pros:
    Ease of use. Rugged.
    Cons:
    Not the most aesthetically pleasing.

    Russound AirGo Speaker.

Written By Runnershi, Cincinnati, OH on Wednesday, March 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speaker at the Crutchfield clearance price is a fantastic deal. You can thank Apple for discontinuing the Airport Express. I have a couple spare Express units, so easy for me to put one in this speaker. Airplaying from my iPhone in about 3 minutes after opening back plate to install Express. Plenty of volume for outside use, and built very well. Sound is very good very a single speaker ( not stereo, but will sure power a party!).
    Pros:
It can sure pump out the sound! Built like a tank.
    Cons:
It is not small, or lightweight.

    Too bad it's going away...

Written By Tony G, Turlock, CA on Tuesday, March 19, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product, easy set up. Didn't experience any of the issues some of the other folks have reported. My wife now prefers to play her iTunes through the AirGo via her iPhone rather than messing with the AppleTV and the home theatre system. Bigger than I expected, but well built. It's too bad this product is going away due to the redesign of the Airport Express, though honestly the associated price reduction was the reason why I purchased it. I'm even considering buying myself another old model Airport Express so I can set up a second AirGo in my garage!
    Pros:
    Easy set up, well constructed.
    Cons:
    A bit bulky.

    Awesome

This speaker works great! I use it on my deck and have even taken it along to other locations. Works great. Would definitely recommend it especially for the price!
    Pros:
Weather durability - I live in central SD so the -20 temperatures we have had hasn't bothered it a bit
    Cons:
Can't really say there are any as of yet.

    Fantastic Bargain

Written By Jim T., Westminster, MD on Tuesday, February 12, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After watching prices on the AirGo at other retailers, I was amazed to see Crutchfield's price, including free delivery! I ordered one at that price, then ordered a used Airport Express from a different retailer. I received the AirGo this afternoon and within 10 minutes of taking it out of the box had it connected to another Airport Express (that had been providing music to some indoor speakers) and blasting music in my living room. After finding the volume control on the iTunes window and turning it down a little, it sounds powerful and solid. While I would not want to use the AirGo indoors for too long, my first impression is that it should be great outdoors - it definitely has the ability to put out a lot of sound. I can't wait for warmer temps so that I can use it on my patio! I probably would not have purchased an AirGo for anywhere near its list price, but for or a total investment of $ for both AirGo and Airport Express, I think this rates five stars.
    Pros:
Ease of connection and use. Price at Crutchfield! Grab one at this price before they are gone! Powerful sound - it won't sound weak and tinny outdoors like some other units.
    Cons:
No volume control on the unit, but this was not a deal breaker for me. If you have an iOS device, you should be able to stream music to the AirGo and control the volume with your iPhone, iPad or laptop Mac. I am streaming from a desktop iMac and will simply set the volume from there; it might be a small nuisance to run inside to adjust it at times, but I don't expect that to be a major problem.

    Definitely an "OUTDOOR SPEAKER"

Written By Jerry, San Jose, CA on Saturday, January 05, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been looking for a long time for a outdoor rated wireless speaker system for my outdoor BBQ/Kitchen. I have been using the Apple Airport Express and a self powered Logitec 2.1 speakers system on my BBQ island. Its great to be outdoors at night and listen to tunes while Que'ing and entertaining, and the Airport Express has worked well to pump the music outside without the need for hard wired speaker systems driven by a amp inside the house. My Self powered 2.1 speaker system from Logitec worked well for a few years but the elements have taken its toll on the exposed speakers and they have fallen apart. It looks to be built like a brick house. It's heavy duty and really cranks out the sound. Frankly, to much sound for use indoors. Because there is no volume adjustment knob on the unit, you have to turn it down with the volume control on your computer or iDevice. Even at it's lowest setting it is still to loud for indoor enjoyment. I only hope it is not to loud when in an outdoor environment. I deducted a star because of the lack of volume adjustment on the AirGo. The maker went to the effort to have a fancy lighted mute button but no volume knob. Dumb I like the fact that I can pull it indoors over the winter, and can leave it outdoors during the warmer months without fear of a shower or dew harming the unit. I also like that I can pick it up and place it in garage for when I am working on a project or washing a car. Portability is a plus
    Pros:
Easy set up, HEAVY Duty, good sound, Waterproof and rated for outdoors, wireless, and works with my old Airport Express, price from Crutchfield is far lower than other retailers (by a lot, which leads me to believe this product has reached its lifecycle end, cuz the new airport express is now different) Get it while you can.
    Cons:
Designed by George Jetson. Needs a volume adjustment knob on the unit itself. You really can not turn this thing down enough for comfortable indoor listening, even at the lowest setting on you iDevice - plan to use this in the great outdoors. It's pretty big. Reminds me of my first 12" TV had in College. It's almost that big and front heavy like that. Not a big problem and it won't be knocked over by a stiff breeze or a stiff power cord. (When it dies, I can use it for a boat anchor).

Techie guy thinks you can't beat this

Written By Kurt D, Winamac, IN on Wednesday, November 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I research exhaustively when I make purchases of tech gear. Knowing that I would leave this device outside most of the time (which I did all summer), I was interested in how it would perform and last. I rarely write reviews but someone asked me about outdoor speakers yesterday and during my type up I thought I would look back over the reviews. I saw the review about the humming speaker - you sure it's not the Airport express or that you don't have an electrical problem? Typically humming is a grounding problem. If not, then probably a bad unit or damaged during shipping - it happens folks, if you got one like that and the replacement did the same thing, ok fine, then bash it, but this doesn't seem to be the case in general with this product.
    Pros:
Great sound quality for the simplicity of a single unit. Deep Bass, clear sounding at high volumes. Volume - I have a pool and a 3 acre yard, with the sound maxed, it's clear fills most of my yard. I have an airport base station and this device acts as a repeater which expands my wireless coverage. Not sure this will work with non-apple airport case station. Price. Compare for yourself, you'll be hard pressed to find a better speaker for the $ - even after considering the cost of the Airport
    Cons:
For now, finding an older style airport express. The new airport will not fit. I hope Russsound makes an updated model soon as I would like to give on of these as a gift to my parents for their beach house.

    Love my 2012 "Boombox"!

Written By Marian S, Colorado Springs, CO on Tuesday, October 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

LOVE my AirGo!!! Also love the clever name. Been wanting exactly what I just received for my 65th birthday. Our son had one, and my husband ordered one for me. Can wirelessly use this plug-in-anywhere awesome-sound speaker. Easy to use, plug in any outlet. In or outdoors. Use any device...my own or anyone we give the user word to. Only drawback, with our whole family get-togethers, we have iPhones vying for using their own music. Bumping one another off :-) LOVE IT!!!
    Pros:
    See above
    Cons:
Still working out our own little bugs with the multi-devices within our home. Not related to the AirGo..

russound airgo is a functional device with some issues

Written By Anonymous, boston, ma on Thursday, October 11, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

purchased one recently for outdoor use.
    Pros:
easy to set up and use, practical, no other device like it on the market in terms of being a powered speaker that can wirelessly receive music
    Cons:
won't work with the new airport express, ugly looking, sound is average at best (though it is difficult to make a good sounding speaker for outdoor use), heavy, once you factor in the cost of the airport express kind of on the pricy side, too much base for my taste

    Great AirPlay, Great Sound!

Written By jons9761, Longmont,, CO on Tuesday, September 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great concept and works exactly as one would expect. When it comes to setup, I was new to the AirPort Express, but realized if Apple made it, it will be simple to set up. I was right. Ironically, it was far easier to set up with the iPad AirPort Utility app than with the PC utility that you get from Apple's site. When you plug in the AirPort Express, give it a minute to power up and do its boot sequence. Then go into your iPad or iPhone settings for WiFi and you will see a separate AirPort section pop up with the new AirPort Express showing up in the list. Then simply follow the instructions and one minute later, you are live and AirPlay and internet is ready to go. It really is that simple. Make sure you don't get the very latest version of AirPort Express since apple did a redesign that makes it not fit in the speaker enclosure.

What makes this setup nicer than any other AirPlay device out there is the ability to use it as a WiFi extender to your home network. You will likely be using this outside your house, where signal strength suffers for your devices. Connect them to the AirPort Express in the speaker and you instantly have full signal strength while you surf the web AND stream your music. You can even set up guest access for them to stream to your speaker if you wish, or if they have non-iOS, give them guest access to internet via the AirPort Express.
    Pros:
The setup is a breeze, signal strength is excellent (just get the 802.11n version of the AirPort Express as a refurb from Apple directly or your favorite retailer that still sells the previous model), and use could not be any more simple and direct. The latest version of AirPort will not fit in the Russound speaker due to a major design change by Apple. Sound is far better than I ever thought possible. Deep bass, rich sound. The build quality is fantastic and it is sturdy.
    Cons:
Would be nice to adjust volume on the speaker directly with some physical buttons for quick adjustments without having to go to the streaming device. This is particularly noticed when you are whole-house streaming from your computer to multiple devices and want to adjust the local speaker. There is a mute button on the front though. A bundle option including the AirPort Express would be nice from the retailer for convenience too. There are no deal breakers at all here though!

    They sound GOOD

Written By garegrae, El Paso on Saturday, August 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought one of the speakers and have used it extensively for over a month now in the back yard. The sound from this system is rich and booming covering a good distance, my backyard is about 100' by 80' with the vast area open. The connection to my iDevices remains strong and without interruption and the airport express fits nicely in it's reserved area. The temperature here is mainly HOT and dry, but we are in our monsoon season so the speakers have had to deal with wetter conditions. Setup was a breeze and was up and operational within 3-5 minutes. I originally wanted to try these speakers out to see if they would be a nice fit and I have been pleased without regrets. I plan to buy a couple more to extend the sound to reach of my yard.
    Pros:
good sound, nice heavy/sturdy build, easy setup, good price for the system, mobile
    Cons:
incompatibility to the new airport express

    Not Bad

Written By ags290, North Texas on Thursday, August 16, 2012

The unit was super easy to set up. There is a Russsound video on you tube that walks you through the entire process. We were listening to Pandora within 10 minutes of opening the box. The airport express is kind of finicky about the wireless signal and will cause the speaker to drop out at times. I have placed it in several locations throughout the house and yard and continue to have issues with it dropping the signal. I even ended up replacing the router but the problem still persists. When the unit works it sounds great. I have toyed with leaving the back cover off and just hooking up a ipod directly to the unit.
    Pros:
Cool Design, Neat Concept, Great Sound Quality.
    Cons:
    Connectivity Issues

    AirFoil with Airgo Speakers

Written By MD, St. Amant, LA on Wednesday, August 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers sound great. I used 4 AirGo speakers in our outdoor kitchen area. 2 in the covered kitchen area and 2 on the open patio. 40' x40' total area. Plenty of sound. We don't need to turn them up 100% because we're on the river and the sound carries a long way. I purchased 4 of the older AirPort Express so they would fit into the back of the AirGo speakers. Works great, but at first I could only use one speaker at a time with my iPad, so I install an iPad app called "remote" on the iPad and all speakers worked using the itunes from my Mac inside the house. I wanted to play Pandora over all speakers so I had to install a program called AirFoil on my laptop. With airfoil, I can play anything on all 4 speakers that's playing on the internet. AirHeart Radio, Pandora, etc. Also have the newer AirPort Express in kitchen area and was able to connect the audio wire from it to the AirGo speaker audio jack and it worked great. Just had to have the back off the speaker for access. If the old AirPort express goes out, I think I'll just drill a hole in the back cover for access to the speaker audio jack and use the newer AirPort. I would think Russound would be updating the back cover soon to handle the newer AirPort. If so, I might could order a cover from them??
    Pros:
Good sound, can move around to different locations. Can bring inside when not needed.
    Cons:
No way to mount to ceiling or wall. But then you would have to have a remote AC power switch or X-10 type remote power or the amp would be on all the time.

    Airgo Review

Written By Rocking on the Greens, Bella Vista, AR. USA on Monday, August 06, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We have bought two of these Airgo airplay speakers for our backyard/porch that overlooks a golf course and we love them! We can use our iTunes music library, and run music selection and volumes for each speaker from our iphones, ipods or ipads. Weather is viscious here and we can move the speakers indoors or elsewhere easily. This was a great solution and saved us over $1000 for another wireless system we were considering.
    Pros:
Easy set up, great tone and bass. May eventually add a few more. Note: shipping was fast!
    Cons:
Did not feel comfortable letting speakers catch any direct sun when it was 110 degrees this summer. Moved them to full shade. No other concerns.

    Impressed

Written By Top, Texas on Sunday, July 22, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I first opened the box I was surprised by the weight but for me that is not a bad thing since we can experience some high winds here in the Southwest. No pushing this thing around! It's solid in construction and I have no problems leaving it outside however, the true test is how it'll handle playing for long hours in the heat (I live in El Paso, TX). I am an Apple-connected family so setting it up using an older Express Base station and Airplay connection was a snap on all my devices (MAC desktop, iPod Touch, iPads and iPhones). My niece held a pool party and she and her friends had a blast using it to listen to the music on their phones/iTouch (I gave them access to my "guest" network).
    Pros:
Portability and I was very surprised at how it sounded. The highs and low responses were very good and sounded almost Bose-like...almost. BTW, I posted this same review on Amazon.com where I ordered this item.
    Cons:
The only drawbacks and the reason for a four star rating instead of five, is that you must use the older model Airport Express (fortunately I had one) so there's that purchase. Additionally, there is no volume capability on the speaker itself so you'll have to use the volume setting on the airplay device you're using. Not a showstopper but leaving the volume up to the kids to determine isn't always conducive to good neighborly relations. :)

    AirGo rocks

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We purchased 4 units for outside wireless speakers after receiving a quote for an exorbitant speaker setup. After configuring the airports, the sound is easy to control and the units can be installed anywhere with electricity. The sound is comparable to the other high end outdoor speakers I have tried. Our Airport Extreme attaches to one of our speakers on our pond dock ~400 feet away.
    Pros:
Portability, ease of control with AirTunes, flexibility in speaker arrangement due to lack of wires, sound volume and quality
    Cons:
Was not able to Extend the AirPort network and use AirTunes without frequent audio drops. Works best as joining the network, but I had hoped to extend the network.

    Good portable outdoor speaker.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this speaker as an alternative to installing a fixed outdoor speaker and it worked out very good. It was a short time to set up to work with my home network and interfacing with my laptop and iPhone. No problems so far it's been two weeks. I would recommend this speaker as a good buy.
    Pros:
    Wireless easy to set up.
    Cons:
A little heavy and the added purchase of the apple airport device.
