What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Kicker 10CVR82

by Dominic Devito

Kicker CompVR subs let you kick out the jams without tearing a hole in your wallet. These subs handle plenty of power, and get their fierce sound from tough, injection-molded polypropylene cones with reliable Santoprene™ surrounds. The unique SoloKon™ cone with its 360-degree back bracing keeps going strong when the bass gets heavy, while perimeter venting in the strong steel basket keeps the voice coils cool for dependable performance.

The 10CVR82 8" sub sports dual 2-ohm voice coils that give you more wiring options when setting up your system. The sub's cool-looking black finish highlights the potent low end you'll hear and feel. Boat owners: Kicker certifies the CompVR subs for marine use, so you can generate some serious bass waves out on the water.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 2 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1 ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4 ohm load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 2 ohm load.

Cone Design: The Comp VR's super-rigid injection-molded polypropylene cone features 360-degree back bracing to completely eliminate flex and distortion.

Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Spiralead Tinsel Leads: The Comp VR features durable Spiralead tinsel leads, which are woven into the woofer's progressive-roll polycotton spider, for added strength and reliability.

Basket and Motor Assembly: The strong steel basket features perimeter venting to help cool the high-temperature voice coil wires and prevent breakdown. The overall motor structure design is based on technology found in Kicker's flagship Solo-Baric line of subwoofers, and allows the sub to handle more power and take more abuse. The high-mass solid pole piece removes potentially damaging heat.

Speaker Terminals: The spring loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 8 gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Comp VR speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speaker very stiff out-of-the-box. Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A broken-in subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Power Handling: The power handling specifications differ according to the type and size of the enclosure. The power handling specifications assume that both voice coils are in use. Note: Both voice coils in a dual voice coil speaker should always be connected.

    Recommended Sealed Box Volume:

    • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 0.4 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 200 watts RMS (100 watts per voice coil)
    • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 1.8 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 140 watts RMS (70 watts per voice coil)

    Recommended Vented Box Volume:

    • Compact: 0.8 cu/ft; 1.5" x 8" port opening; 20.75" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 75 watts RMS (37.5 watts per voice coil)
    • SQ: 1.2 cu/ft; 2" x 8" port opening; 19.125" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 75 watts RMS (37.5 watts per voice coil)

    8" CVR DVC 2-ohm

Written By Billy, Richmond, VA on Sunday, October 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in the parcel shelf of my 2002 Avalon, in place of the blown factory JBL 8". Sounds pretty good, even though it is installed as an Infinite Baffle subwoofer and still running off of the factory JBL amplifier (a whopping 27W RMS). Cannot wait to pair this to Kicker's 12PX200.1 amplifier at 1ohm for 100W RMS. Should be enough to consistently blow the 3rd brake light bulb which sits right above the woofer. :)
    Pros:
Fit more or less just like stock. DVC construction means I can run it at 4 ohms or 1 ohm, for greater amplifier flexibility down the road. Very well built. The woofer cone is very stiff, and actually sewn into the surround, for superior durability. The magnet is very heavy and the motor is stiff, this thing will really boom when I feed it some more power.

    Small size, big sound!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sub. I originally bought this sub to replace the 8" Infinity sub in my Jeep Rubicon. Unfortunately, I noticed no sound difference because the Infinity amp couldn't push this sub even at 2 omhs. In fact the Infinity sub sounded better with the Infinity amp (don't let anyone tell you otherwise). So I bought a JL 250/1 mono amp just to push this sub and OMG what sound it puts out for its size. I have the amp sensitivity almost at zero and the gain at half and its just right for my Jeep. Kicker makes great subs and I'm very happy with mine.
    Pros:
Great sound for size and a great value

    Ya, it hits...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Dropped it in a sealed Sound Ordinance small 8" enclosure. See my review on the enclosure for it's mods... As far as this driver (8" SUBwoofer - there's a contradiction in terms, HAha ;-), it hits hard for what it is - 8". Wife's car, original ported Kicker 8" got jacked last week, so this replacement is driven by a 1998 (BSHouse!) MTX 250x 100WRMS bridged into 4 ohms (2+2 ohm in series DVC) cut into the factory head with a MTX re-Q. Definitely hits harder than the original. Really brings out the low end on that dance music (?) station. Highly recommended if you have limited space!
    Pros:
    Best bang-for-the-buck I found in 8" drivers.
    Cons:
Absolutamente NADA, other than the wifie didn't effing notice the MISSING sub (thus the 8" - my audio luddite)...

    Kicker is Perfection

Written By SheaD, Tampa, Fl on Wednesday, February 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't think twice about buying these. Bought my first set in '08 for my 1990 Ford Ranger. Was sad at first because this was all I could get to fit but they have blown me away, literally. Crystal clear and heavy deep bass. No one can believe they are just 8s. Hooked up to a Kicker ZX350x4 and complemented with Kicker 6x9 3 ways in rear and 5 1/4 in front. I'm still rocking 4 years later. Sealed box is the way to go.

Throw your twelves in the trash

Written By Chris, Missoula, MT on Saturday, May 29, 2010

I bought a set of these. I took one look at them and thought they would just supply a little
bit of mid bass to my system. Boy was I wrong. I have two twelves powered by a P300.1
and these two eights powered by a P300.1. You can barely hear the twelves, these take
everything the amp can put out. Use a sealed box, the ported box just didn't do these
    justice.
