Network Requirements
Sonos ZonePlayer S5
ZonePlayer S5: The Sonos ZonePlayer
S5 is a wireless music system that lets you use your iPhone or iPod touch or any
Sonos Controller (CR100/CR200, sold separately) to control and enjoy all the
music you want all over your house. The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 creates
room-filling, high-performance sound using an integrated five-way speaker system
driven by five built-in digital amplifiers. In a multi-room sound system,
the first ZonePlayer is connected to your home network, and each subsequent
ZonePlayer S5 can be wired or completely wireless.
Note: The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 works seamlessly with the
complete range of Sonos products.
Wireless Technology: The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 brings great
sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring
project. SonosNet 2.0, a proprietary wireless mesh network technology, provides
superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensures synchronous music
playback, and avoids sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range
of the ZonePlayer S5's built-in wireless system is approximately 100 feet,
depending upon your home's layout.
Note: Thick walls, microwave ovens, and the presence of other
wireless devices can interfere with or block the wireless network signals of the Sonos Digital Music Signal. When interference occurs, you can relocate the ZonePlayer
S5, change the wireless channel, or make a wired (Ethernet) connection.
Multi-Zone Compatibility: You can place a ZonePlayer S5 in each zone where you want to listen to music. The Sonos Digital
Music System can accept up to 32 ZonePlayers.
With multiple zones, you can play the same song in different rooms, or different
songs in different rooms.
Room-Filling Sound: The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 provides
crystal-clear, room-filling sound through various advanced sound technologies. The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 incorporates an all digital architecture design
for precise sound reproduction. The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 utilizes a five -driver bass-reflex speaker system individually powered by five dedicated digital amplifiers for room-filling sound. The ZonePlayer S5 contains two tweeters, two
mid-range drivers, and on bass driver for accurate tonal balance, deep bass, and
crystal clear sound. The ZonePlayer S5 offers adjustable bass, treble, balance,
and loudness controls for optimal sound performance.
- 5 Speakers Powered By 5 Dedicated Digital Amplifiers: The
ZonePlayer S5 uses 5 state-of the-art digital amplifiers individually
coupled with 5 speakers to deliver superior sound to any room. The wireless
music system provides crystal-clear, high-quality sound that rivals much
larger, more complicated systems. A subwoofer produces powerful bass while
two mid-range drivers and two tweeters fill out the sound.
- Class-D Amplifiers: state of the art, great sounding
amplifiers that are light weight, powerful and very energy efficient in
standby and use
- Tweeters: two tweeters create a crisp and accurate high
frequency response
- Midrange Drivers: two 3.0" dedicated mid-range drivers ensure the
faithful reproduction of mid-range frequencies crucial for accurate
playback of vocals and instruments
- Subwoofer: dedicated 3.5" subwoofer driver provides deep, powerful
bass you can feel
- Acoustic Port: The acoustic port on the rear of the unit serves
two purposes - it's vital to the sound output of the S5 when in use and it's
also a convenient handle when moving it from one room to another.
- All-Digital Sound Architecture: From the recording studio to your
home the music is reproduced as the artist intended. All filter settings,
active equalization, and time-alignment are done in the digital domain
through state-of-the-art DSP circuitry so there is absolutely no loss of
audio quality or energy.
- Adjustable Audio Controls: Optimize sound performance using
zone-specific bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls. Adjust volume by
individual zone or by groups of zones.

your home network where you have shared music folders. The Sonos ZonePlayer
S5 can play music stored on up to 16 PCs, Macs or NAS (Network Attached
Storage) devices on your home network, supporting the most popular audio
formats. The Sonos ZonePlayer
S5 indexes your music folders so you can view your music collection by
categories (such as artists, albums, composers, genres, or tracks). The
Sonos ZonePlayer S5 supports the following audio file formats - MP3
(compressed), WMA (compressed), AAC (MPEG4), iTunes, Ogg Vorbis, Audible
(format 4), Apple Lossless, Flac (lossless), WAV (uncompressed), and AIFF
(uncompressed).

touch and a Sonos CR100 or CR200 Zone Controller (616CR100 & 616CR200, both sold
separately).
- Sonos Controller (CR100 or CR200): The Sonos Zone Controllers work exclusively with the Sonos Digital Music Wireless Systems, and allows you to control all of your music and all
of your zones wirelessly from the palm of your hand. The controller
communicates with the nearest ZonePlayer through Sonosnet, a secure,
peer-to-peer wireless mesh network, allowing you to extend the range of the
controller to any room in your house, even outside. Because it communicates
with the nearest ZonePlayer, rather than through one distant control point,
the system avoids sources of wireless interference. The range of the
Sonosnet is 50 to 100 feet, a range similar to that of an 802.11g wireless
access point.
- iPhone or iPod touch: You can also control the Sonos ZonePlayer S5 from your iPhone or iPod touch with a free application from the Apple App Store. You are able to
search for songs and stations, choose the music, and control the volume. You can even get a text or a call on your iPhone and the music will keep playing.
Controls: The ZonePlayer S5 only has a mute button and a
volume control, both mounted on the top of the unit.
Between the buttons lies a Zone Player LED status indicator, which flashes white
when powering up or connecting to the Sonos Digital Music System, and lights
solid when powered up and connected to the music system.
Desktop Controller Software: The supplied setup disc contains the
software for the Desktop Controller, which allows you to control the Sonos
Digital Music System from your home computer. It includes easy-to-use wizards
for setup and music sharing so the music folders on your hard drive can be
shared across all Zone Players. You can also add Internet Radio stations and set
preferences for online updates. Once the system is set up, all you need to do is
choose your music, choose your zone, and press Play. The Desktop Controller is
compatible with Windows XP and higher, as well as Macintosh OS X (10.4 and
higher)
operating systems.
Connections: The Sonos
ZonePlayer S5 is equipped with the following connections.
- 2-Way Ethernet Port: There are
two rear-panel
female RJ-45 connectors for plugging in Category 5 Ethernet cables. You can
connect a router, computer, or an additional network device, such as a
network-attached storage (NAS) device. Specifications: 10/100 Mbps, auto MDI/MDIX.
- Analog Input: You can connect
an external source, such as a portable music player or a CD player, to the
unit's rear-panel 3.5mm minijack port. The input jacks automatically detect a device
is connected, and the source appears in the system. Music from the external
source can be played in any zone. The volume is controlled by the Sonos Digital
Music System, however, the playback (pause, music selection, etc.) must be
controlled at the source.
- Headphone Output: The ZonePlayer S5 is equipped with a rear-panel
3.5mm headphone output for connecting a set of headphones. The headphone jack is
auto-detecting, so when you plug-in a set of headphones, the ZonePlayer's
built-in speakers automatically mute.
- Power Input: The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 operates off AC
household current
using the supplied AC power adapter and cord. The ZonePlayer S5 is
capable of accepting 115/120 Volts AC or 230/240 Volts AC.
Versatile Placement: You
can position the Sonos ZonePlayer S5 wherever you find the sound most enjoyable.
Its compact size and inset handle make it easy to place the ZonePlayer S56 on
the kitchen counter, or carry it out to the patio with you. For maximum
performance, following these guidelines:
- For best bass performance, locate the
ZonePlayer S5 within 2-feet of a wall.
- Place the ZonePlayer S5 across the room
from where you will be listening.
- Don't block the acoustic port when in
use.
- Place the ZonePlayer S5 at least
12-inches from a television, computer, or other monitor to avoid the
possibility of picture quality interference.
- The ZonePlayer S5 is not
water-resistant; do not leave it outside during a rain store or position it
near water.
Sonos ZoneBridge 100
ZoneBridge 100: The Sonos ZoneBridge BR100 is used to
connect the Sonos ZonePlayer S5 to your home network or to extend the wireless
range of the Sonos Digital Music System. The Sonos ZoneBridge BR100 makes
setting up your wireless Sonos system fast and easy by simply connecting the
ZoneBridge to your router to instantly activate SonosNet (a secure wireless mesh
network). The included Sonos ZonePlayer S5 and Controllers (CR100, sold
separately) will work wirelessly and can be placed anywhere in your home.
Although the ZoneBridge doesn't play music like the Sonos ZonePlayer, it's an
effective way to extend the range of the Sonos system and expand the
Controller's wireless coverage. It's also a way to connect other products to the
Internet.
Note: This unit is not a stand-alone device and requires at least
one Sonos ZonePlayer.
Instant Wired/Wireless Setup: The ZoneBridge connects to
your router using a standard Ethernet cable connection (2-port switch,
10/100Mbps, auto MDI/MDIX). Then, a simple press of the button located on top of
the BR100 will start SonosNet, a secure AES encrypted, peer-to-peer wireless
mesh network that enables other Sonos products to control and play music
wirelessly.
System Flexibility: Once
you've set up your ZoneBridge, you can easily add more components anytime. If
your home has structured (built-in) wiring, you can make a wired connection to
additional ZonePlayers or ZoneBridges. If you don't have structured wiring, you
can take advantage of Sonos's built-in wireless technology. The
ZoneBridge BR100 provides flexibility to place your ZonePlayers in any room of
the house and connect them all wirelessly.
Ethernet Ports: The ZoneBridge has two Ethernet jacks on the
back to bring standard Internet connectivity to your set-top box, PVR, PC, Game
Console or NAS drive.
Range Expansion: You can stream music wirelessly to a remote
location by placing a ZoneBridge in between your ZonePlayer in a remote location
and the rest of your Sonos system. You can also improve Controller access to
SonosNet by placing the ZoneBridge in areas where wireless coverage needs a
boost. The ZoneBridge BR100 is ideal for retrofits, where your ZonePlayers might
be in one location instead of being placed throughout your home.
Desktop Controller Software: Designed with a user interface
to accommodate a large screen displays, the supplied Sonos Desktop Controller
software for PC and Mac will guide you through both set up and music sharing. It
offers all the same functionality as the Sonos Controller, but instead of being
in the palm of your hand, it's all on your desktop. The software offers the
following features.
- Easy-to-use wizard for set up and music sharing. Set up music folders on
your hard drive so they can be shared across all ZonePlayers.
- Control of your Sonos Digital Music System from your desktop.
- Add and edit your choice of Internet radio stations.
Network Requirements
Hardware: In order to play the
digital music files stored on your computer throughout the Sonos Digital Music
System, you must meet the following hardware requirements:
- Ethernet: You must have an
Ethernet network interface connection in your computer. If you do not have
one, you will need to buy and install a Network Interface Card (NIC) before
setting up your system.
- Modem: It is highly
recommended that you have a DSL/cable modem, or LAN-based high-speed
Internet connection. It is not designed for a dial-up system.
- Router: If you have a
cable or DSL modem connected directly to your computer, you should have a
router connected between your modem and your computer to maintain your
computer's security. If you don't have a router, you will need to buy and
install one before setting up your system.
System Requirements: In addition to the above-described
hardware, your computer must have the following:
- Compatible Operating Systems: Windows XP and
higher, Macintosh OS X (10.4 and higher)
- CPU: 500 MHz processor or better
- RAM: 128MB RAM minimum/256MB RAM recommended
Automatic Updates: The ZonePlayer S5 allows for free automatic
software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services
to enjoy. Simply register the ZonePlayer S5 and Sonos will automatically notify you when
software updates are available. By simply pressing one button your system
updates itself.
