Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Sony DSX-S100

by Ken Nail

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

Here's a new twist on using your iPod® in the car. Sony's DSX-S100 digital media receiver features a special internal Tune Tray compartment that holds your iPod or Sony Walkman MP3 player. Fold down the face, plug your player into the Tune Tray via the USB connection, and then close it up inside the receiver — safely out of sight, but fully operational from the receiver's controls.

Find your songs fast
A neat trick like a hideaway iPod compartment isn't much use if the controls aren't up to speed. No worries here — this Sony includes a set of powerful search controls, so finding your favorite music files is a snap. You can search through hundreds of tracks quickly and easily with Quick-BrowZer™, or use Zappin™ to listen to short clips from your music while searching.

Powerful audio performance
The DSX-S100 boasts some serious sonic tools. A premium 24-bit digital-to-analog converter brings out the best in your music, and the built-in amplifier offers impressive muscle. The EQ3 Stage 2 3-band parametric EQ lets you target the precise high, midrange, and low frequencies you want to adjust, while the Dynamic Soundstage Organizer feature "raises" the soundstage so your music sounds more immediate and lively. Digital Music Plus Advanced enhancer technology improves detail and high frequency sound reproduction from compressed audio.

Add on and enjoy
For more musical choices, you can add an optional HD Radio™ or satellite radio tuner to the DSX-S100. Ramp up the sound by connecting external amps to the two pairs of high-voltage preamp outputs.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

      Display Features

Detachable Fold-Down Face: The Sony DSX-S100 digital media receiver features a detachable fold-down face for theft prevention. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The digital media receiver's fold-down face folds-down to access the unit's USB port.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Caution Alarm: If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the built-in amplifier is used.

Fluorescent LCD Display: The 2-line fluorescent LCD display makes it easy to read station and song information. You can adjust the display's contrast (1-7) for a clear view of the LCD, suitable for the installed viewing angle.

Level Meter: This feature shows a level meter on the display when turned on.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed on a disc.

Dimmer: You can manually dim the display at night, if desired. You can operate the display dimmer automatically, when the vehicle's lights are turned on, or manually. If the dimmer is set to automatic, the orange/white wire in the power harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order to properly work.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button for 1 second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

      Audio Section

True Fidelity Sound Construction: The Sony DSX-S100 FM/AM compact disc player features a newly developed sound processor for less distortion, an S-MOSFET IC for smooth signal transmission, and a large-sized capacitor for deep bass sound.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Sony DSX-S100 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony DSX-S100 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DSX-S100 are as follows:

      • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

Digital Music Plus Advanced: The Sony DSX-S100 features Digital Music Plus Advanced which is an enhancer technology used to reproduce detail and high frequency sound from compressed audio.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): The DSX-S100 features the Dynamic Soundstage Organizer, which uses proprietary circuitry to virtually raise the soundstage and spread it wider across the dash. This is especially helpful if your vehicle has speakers mounted low in the door panels. There are three levels of DSO, each with an increasing amount of effect.

EQ3 Stage 2: The Sony DSX-S100 features an EQ3 Stage 2 equalizer with 8 preset equalizer curves for various types of music. You can choose from Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off. The Off mode provides a flat response. The Custom mode allows you to manually adjust the Low (60 Hz), Mid (1 kHz), and High (10 kHz) frequencies from +/-10dB.

Loudness: This features reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Two Pairs Of 2V Preamp Outputs: The DSX-S100 contains two pairs of 2-volt RCA preamp outputs - a front pair and another pair that can be set for the rear channels or for subwoofer operation.

Subwoofer Controls: When set to subwoofer, the output becomes non-fading and a low pass filter is activated with a selectable cut-off frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off. You can set the cutoff frequency for the front and rear channels independently or all together.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Radio Functions

SSIR-EXA AM/FM Tuner with RDS: The Sony DSX-S100 features a built-in SSIR-EXA AM/FM Tuner with RDS. Preset Tuning: The radio features 5 memory bands to store and receive AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2 (total: 18 FM/12 AM). Preset tuning can be done manually or automatically.

      • Manual Tuning: You can manually tune and find your favorite radio stations one by one for FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.

Auto Tuning: You can use the seek button to help you search quickly through the available stations and then choose your own presets from these available stations.

Local Seek Mode: In the Local Seek Mode, the unit will only tune in stations with very strong signals during Seek tuning.

Mono Mode: The Mono Mode allows you improve poor FM reception by selecting a monaural signal instead of a stereo signal.

HD Radio Ready: The DSX-S100 is compatible with Sony's optional XT-100HD add-on HD Tuner (158XT100HD, sold separately) through its UniLink Bus connection. HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc. Once connected, all AM and FM broadcasts are received by the XT-100HD. HD appears as an additional source, with five preset banks; HD1 (FM1), HD2 (FM2), HD3 (FM3), HD4 (AM1), and HD5 (AM2). In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

      JUNK!

Written By Tom, Atlanta, GA on Monday, September 17, 2012

Sony Car Audio Products are Garbage! This Company took my money for a Head Unit that did not last for 3 months! Now between sending it off and waiting to get it back I'm furious. This thing will be going in the garbage and I will NEVER recommend or purchase another SONY head unit for any car! Please consider ALPINE for your next purchase! Everything in my car is ALPINE or POLK AUDIO! I'll admit it, SONY got me this time! NEVER again!

Also, Crutchfield sold me this head unit and after 3 months the face plate no longer recognized that it was connected to the unit. I can no longer change tracks, volume, AM/FM, AUX, USB NOTHING! They sent me to SONY and the real nightmare began! I am upset that Crutchfield did not help me more with this issue. Either way I will be purchasing my products locally from now on! I have a problem with it I am able to talk to the place that sold it to me in person! Too easy to brush people off over the phone or through chat.

      Thanks for nothing!
      Pros:
Holds your iPod device or USB drive.
      Cons:
      Made by SONY! JUNK!

Bought this to replace factory radio in my 2005 Honda S2000. Fit right in there, no problem, radio cover closes just fine. No more toting CD's around for me! This unit has functions to tweek the bass just the way you like it and plenty of settings to get the sound just right. I don't really listen to radio much anymore...too many commercials. I love having my entire music library with me everywhere I go. I just leave my memory stick in the hide away tray, which is pretty cool. The built in EQ presets are great too if you are in a hurry. Unit came with a remote, but I don't need to use it due to having dashboard radio controls. I recommend Sony highly. Bought a different model for my other car and sold the car so I had to have another one! I replaced the factory speakers with a pair of Polks. Sounds 100% better with the top down and I didn't even need an amp. I highly recommend this product for the price and quality.
      Pros:
Nice sounding bass and lots of options to make the sound quality the way you like it
      Cons:
None that I have found so far

Installation was a breeze. I love the tray for my IPOD nano. The only draw back is I have not yet figured out how to get the iPod to play just certain artist or sound tracks. It is in a shuffle mode I think. I might get it figured yet. Just need to to read more about it. Other than that .....I love it. Thinking about getting another unit for my convertible MGB Roadster.
      Pros:
      The hidden tray for IPOD

2012 Nissan Altima Coupe. Changed my factory receiver to this and the change in sound quality is tremendous(for the better of course) without changing out the speakers. (the speakers are still factory) The sound is richer, high notes were more clear. Really liked the tune tray. Looks very cool. However lost a bit of bass but the bass still suffice for the type of music I listen to and the stock receiver's base was just way too much too.
      Pros:
Great improvement on sound, Tune Tray holds mp3 player very securely

      lost a bit of bass

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed the Sony DSX S100 in an '05 Jeep Wrangler...what a difference! I was simply looking for an aux jack so I could listen to the iPod while driving, a feature that was not present with the stock Jeep stereo. Well, I got so much more than that. It really brought to life the after-market speakers that I had put in a few years ago (all Pioneers) and Sony's iPod controls allow you to keep your eyes on the road while finding that one jam you just gotta hear. Super-fast self-install with no issues at all. Crutchfield supplied all the goods to make it happen.
      Pros:
      - iPod playback and controls in your vehicle sans wires...awesome! - No more CD's all over your vehicle...sweet!
      Cons:
      None.

With an internal USB port and no moving parts, this player is everything a music fanatic could want. Load an SD or micro SD card with thousands of mp3 songs, plug it into a USB card reader, plug the reader into the stereo, and done! Once a week, take the card into the house, reload it with new songs, and it's all good! I have no need of radios, iPods, CD or DVD players... memory cards are the most ideal way to play with music, and this player does the job. Recommended!
      Pros:
No moving parts. Internal USB port.
      Cons:
You need to know how to transfer files to memory cards to appreciate this player. WIth basic file management skills on a computer, you will love the player, but if you struggle with things like this, you could have major headaches.

What a great invention. The IPod tray holds the IPod securely and is out of sight. We are using it on a boat which makes it ideal since the IPod is safe from rough seas and weather. Great investment. Crutchfileld's price was $50 below Wal Mart for the identical item. Will deal with Crutchfiled again, great service.

Its a great product for the price. I really loved how the Play implemented USB/mobile iOS products into it. Its pretty easy to use and I love it, but there are a few functionality features that could be fixed up or modified. Also, it boosted my sound output by at least 4x. Need to get new rear speaker because it blew them out. (Not necessarily a bad thing seeing as how I wanted now ones and they were 10 years old)
      Pros:
*Complete iPod, iPhone, and USB control *Cool Zappin' feature *Looks awesome *No CD player so my girlfriend can't play Taylor Swift in my car anymore *Easy to navigate stuff on it without looking down at your phone and potentially causing a car crash
      Cons:
*Takes forever to find the artist/song you want *Doesn't display the time in iPod mode without sacrificing music info *If you choose a song then choose repeat all or shuffle all, it restarts the playlist *Shuffle and repeat don't light up at the same time, so not sure if it shuts shuffle off or not. *Doesn't stop playing music after completing an album or anything. Just goes to the next artist or whatever. That's kind of annoying.

      PRETTY GOOD FOR THE MONEY

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this as a replacement for my factory radio. I replaced all my speakers right before replacing the head unit. I immediately heard a huge difference in the sound quality and amount of bass with the internal amp. It was nice at first until I realized there was a mid bass tinny type noise that I would could not get rid of with the basic 3 band EQ. I thought it might be the Alpine speakers that I purchased, but installed the same speakers in my wife's car with a new JVC head unit and those sound normal. I tell myself that I only paid little for it and it is not worth the sending it back and the extra money to jump up to the next level for a better EQ. I would also say that the face is a real sun of a gun to get lined up and on everytime. I have to do it with two hands and it is not going to happen in the dark. The trim ring wont fit with my dash, so that may be most of my problem? I have to say I really like the storage tray as it conceals my I pod and the interface works well enough. I noticed that other media players did not have this storage tray. I bought the Square Trade extended warranty as the USB wire seems flimsy and may break from normal wear. I WOULD NOT HAVE PAID FULL PRICE FOR THIS ONE!
