Our take on the SIRIUS Stiletto 100

by Matt Holliday

The SIRIUS Stiletto 100 offers reception of a live SIRIUS signal on the go, plus up to an amazing 100 hours of content storage. It offers a beautiful display and easy-to-use controls, comes with a slew of useful accessories, and works with optional accessories that expand the number of places and ways you can listen to SIRIUS.

True portability
The Stiletto features a built-in antenna that can receive live SIRIUS broadcasts, without having to be docked in either of its optional car or home cradles. Just charge up the battery, slip on the pair of included earbuds, and you've got a great companion if you're out jogging, hiking, or just walking around town.

You'll also get a set of headphones with an antenna built into the headband for better reception in areas where the signal tends to get blocked. Using these headphones also keeps your body from blocking the SIRIUS signal.

Storage galore
The Stiletto lets you store up to 100 hours of SIRIUS songs and programming. And up to just about half of the memory can be used to store your MP3 and WMA files, too — keep in mind that you won't get a full 50 hours of MP3s and WMAs because of file size.

You can record SIRIUS programming in blocks of up to six hours each, and you can schedule up to 100 recordings in advance. Then just combine your favorite SIRIUS content with your MP3s and WMAs for a spectacular playlist.

WiFi™ capability
Sometimes you'll find spots where you can't get SIRIUS reception, but this doesn't necessarily mean that you can't hear live SIRIUS broadcasts. If you're in range of an accessible WiFi network, use the Stiletto to access the SIRIUS website and stream all of SIRIUS' music channels, Howard Stern, and more. You'll also make fewer demands on the battery, more than doubling its playback time, compared to listening to live SIRIUS in standard portable mode.

Lots of goodies in the box
In addition to the earbuds and headphones with built-in antenna, you'll get two batteries: one standard and one extended-life, which offers up to four hours of live SIRIUS reception, 8 hours in WiFi mode, and 20 hours of stored-content playback. You'll also get an indoor power adapter, so you can recharge the batteries.

Extra accessories
To play the Stiletto over your car stereo, you'll need to get the optional car kit. It includes an antenna, a power adapter, and a mounting cradle with 10 buttons that let you save up to 30 channel presets. You can connect the cradle to your stereo's auxiliary input, or use the wireless FM transmitter to play the sound over any unused FM frequency.*

Want to play the Stiletto through your home stereo? Pick up the optional home kit. Its dock charges both Stiletto batteries at the same time, and it also uses an FM transmitter to play the sound over any FM radio. And soon, you'll be able to use the Stiletto in your home or office with a compatible powered speaker system.

Note: A subscription to SIRIUS is also required. Satellite radio service is available only within Canada and the lower 48 states — not available in Hawaii or U.S. territories. Limited service is available in Alaska. Portable reception may vary by location. If you have questions about the proposed XM/SIRIUS merger, read the SIRIUS guarantee. To view this file, you will need the Adobe Acrobat PDF reader.

*Important note from Crutchfield: Current FCC rules limit the transmission strength of wireless FM transmitters to a point where transmission needs to take place very near your FM antenna. SIRIUS includes an FM extender cable in order to address this issue, but Crutchfield strongly encourages customers to use an auxiliary input, wired FM modulator, or cassette adapter to ensure your satisfaction with the performance and cosmetics of this satellite radio.

FM Transmitter: The Stiletto has a built-in FM transmitter used to supply sound from your Stiletto to your car's sound system via the optional car docking station (607SLC1, sold separately).

Important Note from Crutchfield: Current FCC rules limit the transmission strength of wireless FM transmitters to a point where transmission needs to take place very near your FM antenna. Sirius includes an FM extender antenna with the optional car kit in order to address this issue, but Crutchfield strongly encourages customers to use an auxiliary input, wired FM modulator, or cassette adapter to ensure satisfaction with the performance and cosmetics of this satellite radio.

USB Connector Cable: The unit comes supplied with a USB connector cable that features a USB type-A connector on one end and a proprietary connector on the other end. This cable is used to download MP3 and WMA files from your PC to the Stiletto.

Display Screen: The Sirius Stiletto 100 features a full-color, 2.2" LCD display which provides information about the operation of the unit, such as the currently tuned channel, song or show being played, mode, status, recording, and other information.

Power Options: The Sirius Stiletto 100  can be powered with the following supplied accessories.

    • Battery: Two batteries are supplied with the Stiletto 100; a slim battery and a standard battery. The batteries when fully charge will provide a range of listening time depending on the listening mode. The following table provides the approximate listening times.

    Satellite Radio Features

Satellite Radio Mode: The Stiletto 100 allows you to listen to live satellite broadcasts of all SIRIUS 100% commercial free music channels, talk, and sports programming. When you are receiving a signal from the SIRIUS satellite or terrestrial transmitters you can browse and select the SIRIUS channels, and see information about the songs, artists, sports, news, weather, and traffic being broadcast.

Now Playing Screen: The Now Playing screen for the Satellite Radio mode provides information such as the currently tuned channel, song or show being played, mode, recording and other information.

Navigating Channels: The Satellite Radio Mode allows you to browse SIRIUS satellite radio channels in the following ways.

    • All Channels: All Channels is a list of all channels in numerical order.

Replay Live Radio: While listening to satellite radio, up to the most recent 60 minutes of the broadcast may be put into a temporary replay buffer. You may resume listening to the broadcast at any time, beginning from the point where the broadcast was paused, or you can fast-forward or rewind through the replay buffer, pause the replay buffer again or return to the live broadcast. The replay buffer is retained until the memory becomes full. When the memory becomes full, the oldest part of the replay buffer is deleted making room for the new material so that the live broadcast can continue to be added to the replay buffer. The replay buffer is discarded when the Stiletto 100 is either turned off or tuned to another channel or to a playlist.

Save Live Broadcasts: Songs and shows can be saved by using the Love button when listening to a live satellite broadcast. When saving a song or show, it is recorded exactly as it was broadcast. There is a limit of 10 hours on songs saved using the one touch Love button. If there is not enough space to save a song or show, the oldest content is deleted in order to make room for the new material. SIRIUS Stiletto 100

Written By james, bay area california on Friday, June 06, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The key to making this product work is to remove the battery every half hour and reboot it. After that it will work great until it overheats and you have to it reboot again. Remeber dont just try turning it off and on, you must remove the battery and hold it for a few seconds then reassemble the unit.

The garage that designed this product als forgot to include a back button, but if you memorize all 200 hundred channels you should be okay.

    Nice but not great

Written By JR, Hillside, NJ on Monday, June 02, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I picked this up because my GF didn't have a unit in her car and since it was a lease I didn't want to put in a new stereo system. If you're outside and you're using it as a portable device it's not too bad. Don't sit under any trees. It works fine in open areas (My Deck, in town, large parks). I bought the car kit and set it up and even used the additional FM booster they send with the kit and it's still as scratchy as they come even when I'm driving down the turnpike or GSP. A few times we've had to power it down completely, remove it from the dock and put it back then turn it on to get it to play through an FM station. Granted I know it won't get the signal quality I get from my built-in DVD unit (Pioneer AVIC-D) but it shouldn't be this tough to get a decent signal. Swap out the headphones too. The ones they send you with the built in antenna make you look like you're wearing a halo around your head.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off I Love Sirius programing! I also have XM but the programming is nowhere near the great programs on Sirius. The Stilletto is a very easy unit to install and program, the only thing that I was dis-appointed with is the self stick pad that is on the dash mount, it was not very good and will fall off, the last unit I got like this had extremely good adhesive and I had a heck of time removing it when I traded off the car. The unit comes with two batteries, and that was an unexpected bonus as well as two head phones, the sound quality is great and although this unit will mainly stay in the car it will most likely go portable when the summer gets here. It will be nice to have satelite radio on my segway.

    Not ready for prime time

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I returned this product after trying it out. The satellite radio reception is very poor even with the antenna headphones. The signal dropped out frequently, even in fairly open areas and walking down the sidewalk.

The antenna headphones are one of the oddest designs you'll ever see. A piece sticks into your ear which is quite uncomfortable after any length of time. The sound quality is not good. (I've heard the headphones for the Stiletto 2 are much, much better.) Unfortunately, the antenna headphones are essential since the satellite signal can't be reliably acquired without them.

The idea of a portable Sirius radio is very appealing. This unit just doesn't fit the bill.

Had the original Sportster for 3 years and was only able to listen in the car. I saw the price at Christmas on the SL100 and could not pass it up. Now not only can I listen in the car but now with the Wi-Fi I can listen in the house and get more out of my subscription. This is a great little unit and I am so glad I made the purchase.

    Pretty Neat

I live in Houston, so this may have a bearing on the reception.

The Stiletto 100 is a very good product.

This may be atypical, but I can receive broadcasts in my home, even in the stairwell. I have good reception at my work place in a location that is not good for FM reception.

It works on a city bus and in my Wife's car. I could even listen in bed! I am very pleasantly surprised

The sound is very good, but the headphones can become uncomfortable, but I am guessing they are a necesary evil for good reception. I will try high end Shure headphones to see if they will work with the good reception.

Who need the Wi-Fi when I can listen indoors.

The Stiletto was a great gift from my Wife for Christmas.

I would like to see a good case for travel.

Always said why would anyone pay for radio ! Well I love Satellite !!! The Stilleto makes it even better ! Easy install vehicle kit and home kit ! The WiFi feature is great for in home use ! No problems at all ! Just wish they would pump the signal into the NYC Tunnels ! Would prefer the Stilleto 2 for the ability to add more memory, but the price for this one couldn't be beat !

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Being a Howard Stern fan, this purchase came naturally. However after reading all the negative reviews I put off buying for almost a year. I finally broke down with the intention of returning it, after trying it out. That was almost six months ago. I love it! Yes, reception can be spotty; its satellite, of course you won't get a signal under the trees. Yes, the antenna/headset isn't the most comfortable, but on a bike ride for 1-2 hours, I have no complaints. You need to buy a home kit to get the fm transmitter to work; combine it with a wi-fi connection, it provides a clean signal to every room in the house (home is 1500 sq. ft.) plus I ran an antenna to it, if theres a song I enjoy I press record; its there complete (granted the song started from the begining, using antenna reception). As stated it's not perfect, but I use more than I thought and absolutely do not regret buying it. Especially when doing yard work :) So if your an average guy who doesn't expect absolute perfection buy it you'll enjoy it.

    Still not perfect, but awesome

Written By Michael, Pearland, TX on Tuesday, August 07, 2007

Sirius just released a new software upgrade for the S100 that allows premium radio recpetion via WiFi. This makes a HUGE difference in sound. Prior to this upgrade, I would only use WiFi for listening to talk and comedy channels because of the narrow bandwidth.

I don't use the satellite reception at home. I can bring the unit to work and get good reception from the ground antenna in Houston, but the battery only lasts 2 hours in this mode and gets uncomfortably hot. WiFi lasts a few more, but the library and radio replays give the best battery life.

It's down to this - This unit is not perfect, but I use mine everyday and love it. I hope the replacement that will eventually come out uses the same accesories, much like the Ipod series. At the new lower price, I would jump on this if you have a wireless home network and want to put a kit in your car. The unit gives you several options.

I bought mine at Christmas and have taken this with me every day. Enjoy yours!!

    Not bad

To address all the complaints from first time satellite users. You have to have a clear view of the sky to use this product (or any satellite product) they are after all satellites not radio antennas down the road from you. It will not work in a bus or a train with a metal roof, or in a car without an external antenna and car kit. It will not work in your home without a home kit and an external antenna or wi-fi and hi speed connection. It will work with the headset antenna with a view of the sky, it will work in New York while walking down the street if you can see the sky. It works fine on wi-fi if its an open access point, Not on one that is locked and you don't have permission to use.

Pros: Sleek design, Firmware update from sirius fixes many issues of battery and several things from other complaints.

Cons: Need more comfortable headset, better sound quality from wi-fi

True Ipod Killer - Buy It!

Written By jasonv, Phoenix, AZ on Thursday, May 10, 2007

    Reasons for 'ipod killer' title:
    - you can upload a couple gigs of your own MP3's
    - you can SAVE ANY SONG FOREVER you hear played on any channel- then replay the song whenever you want (no need to buy new releases on itunes)
    - it provides content- music, personalities, sports, news, weather, comedy
    - i can drive accross the country on the same station no matter how rural the area

The recording option works great- it wakes up at 3am to record howard and i can fast forward the 5 minutes of commercials ever 75 minutes of show.

I love this thing despite some of the negative reviews below. The only negative is like most things the batteries don't last as long as they are quoted- but 5 hours is enough. I know a couple other people who own, and know how to use, a stiletto and haven't heard any complaints. It use to run a slow sometimes but I upgraded the firmware via the provided software and its fine now- that would probably solve some of the problems noted below.

I have no problem with reception- even in an office building at work WITHOUT an antenna connected i can get reception. FYI- the unit will not receive signal from the exterior car antenna if the dock is not plugged into power. I can hear it fine with 1 bar out of 3 with it sitting on my seat. The reception is also better if there are 'repeaters' in your area- I can get full signal in a parking garage in vegas. I can also get full signal outside jogging in phoenix. Don't forget the WI-FI (wireless internet) capabilities if you have signal problems.

    SIRIUS Stiletto 100

Written By siriusly frustrated, Blaine Wa on Monday, May 07, 2007

I have been reading alot of reviews here and most I can realte to. I think I may have found a problem with the reception(outdoors). Why is it that when you have the unit powered by either the car 12volt power supply or the 12 volt power supply for the house the reception is excellent(with the car antenna). But if you leave the battery in and put it in the car dock, disconect the 12 volt power supply, you get aqiuring signal(with a fully charged battery) then do nothing more than simply slide the unit out of the car dock and it gives you a weak signal of one bar. Then simply slide the unit back into the car dock, unit on, and plug in the 12 volt power supply from the house into the car dock, VIOLA! three bars of signal! I think there is a huge problem with the batteries not being able to properly draw enough signal from the antenna,to get proper signal strength. As so many here have stated I am returning my unit to get a refund.

    I really wanted this radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me first say that I was not one who thought that I would get good reception on a Stiletto without some type of external antenna.

My first Stiletto and boombox was returned due to some unknown signal pronlem I'll never know.

My second Stiletto seemed to work fine (although as soon as you get your hands on it, the build quality feels cheap, like it won't last through much hadling).

It could use a scroll search when listening to the library (like an ipod),and there is no indicator of any kind that it's recording while it's in sleep mode (really needs one).

Then it froze up on me a couple of times, one time completely the other time certain controls. No big deal, just power it completely off then back on to fix it.

But the last straw was when it refused to play back more than 1 second of one of my sceduled recoredings, if it even recorded more than 1 second, who knows. I missed 3 hour chunks of two shows. I re-programed it but it still would not work properly. Everything went back. AGAIN!

I'd skip on the Stiletto if I were you. It's obviously got some bugs and you can tell the first time you use it.

And I REALLY wanted this radio.

    What's the point?

Written By Matt, Long Island, NY on Thursday, January 18, 2007

Got Stiletto 100 after waiting for the post holiday price drop. Had the item for only 20 hours, cancelled my service and returned the product. This could possibly be the most dissapointing single purchase I have ever made in my life, here's why:

Pros: Sleek design, potential sound quality

Cons: Reception!!! I must of read atleast 100 reviews before the purchase, some good, some bad. Live on Long Island, only 20 miles from Manhattan and have a 37 minute train ride in. Can't get reception in my apt, on the street, or on the train. Oh and the ridiculous looking antenna headphones that make you look like a NASA technician, they don't work either. I bought the home kit, but don't need it, going back too. THIS IS NOT A PORTABLE DEVICE FOR NEW YORKERS! You're better off buying a Starmate or Sportster which comes with a car kit then buy a home kit. You pay less than half the amount then what you would for the capabilities of the Stiletto.

Don't waste your time, stick to the ipod or you can pay for the internet sirius which works well.

Important note from Crutchfield: Current FCC rules limit the transmission strength of wireless FM transmitters to a point where transmission needs to take place very near your FM antenna. Sirius/XM includes extra wiring in order to address this issue, but Crutchfield strongly encourages customers to use an auxiliary input, wired FM modulator, or cassette adapter to ensure your satisfaction with the performance and cosmetics of this satellite radio.

    SIRIUS Stiletto 100

Written By Seth, Long Island NY on Saturday, January 06, 2007

As an avid Stern fan and music lover, I was excited to receive my Stiletto for Xmas. My wife bought it when it came out in late October and I watched it in the box in her closet for 2 months eagerly awaiting to open it like a little kid. And on the big day I dashed to rip the box open, quickly activated it and NOTHING. The reception of this unit is terrible at best. The headphones feel like sticks in your ears. And I only got a signal 50% of the time when I was outside taking a jog..I think I had better luck with a first generation protable CD player. Then I got no signal inside either. So keeping cool I decided I would use it as a recorder off the Internet.guess what you can not record wifi. So no signal from the sky and no recording from the wifi.not much of a portable unit. In a last ditch effort I bought the home kit. (Thought I would then simply record from the SKY) the antennae only worked if I hung it out of the window and only worked 60-% -70% of the time. And then what is the point of a $350 portable with a $79 home kit..EVERYTHING WAS RETURNED. In my quest for portability I bought an internet recorder. Now I record Sirius and download to the IPOD..I can not believe anyone is happy with this unit.I live in Long Island not the sticks.if there is no service here then where?

Portable Live Satellite Radio??? STILLetto Not There!

Written By Mark, Middletown, NJ on Wednesday, January 03, 2007

First, this is not a reflection of Crutchfield. They are GREAT!
I commute to NYC from NJ by train and really missed Howard live in the morning. I live about an hour outside of the city-- in Middletown, NJ a suburb of New York and couldnt wait for Sirius to release their portable unit- the Stiletto. So I got it for Christmas- tried it around my home- it only worked in certain spots-- my expectations diminished. Then I tried it on the train this week. The only time I could get a sustainable signal was when I was about 5 miles outside of Manhattan. Then it was great. I was only able to listen for about ten minutes out of my hour ride. The signal really has to be enhanced for the rest of the metropolitan area.
The Headphones are what give the Stiletto its name-- you feel like there are two high heels jammed in your head. Poorly designed. The sound easily leaks out of them, too. Didnt anyone try wearing them for ten minutes? Maybe the technicians couldn't get their own signal either.
I have read other reviews by folks who say "its new technology" "give it a chance" or "its the same for all things new and will improve with time." And others who say its "Great!". Well, I disagree. First. it has to WORK and then you can make it better. The Stilletto does not at all do what it is supposed to yet. This was clearly rushed and released for the holidays. The price for everything is steep for the quality of the product and what it cant do. I wished I had purchased the slightly cheaper S50 unit that is portable but not live. I would have manged my own expectations better!

    I had problems recording

Written By Jason, Hawthorne, NV on Tuesday, January 02, 2007

Well, I just got my stiletto for Christmas and I have to say that I love it. I have been with Sirius for 4 years now and it has only gotten better.

I would have to say, don't get rid of your ipod or any other mp3 player for this purchase, because frankly, it will not replace it as the memory is not even close, so I promise you, if you get rid of your 4 gb nano, you will not be able to put all of the songs on your stiletto.

The interface is absolutely great and very user friendly, my girlfriend was able to go through the whole thing and set everything up without any instructions as the functions are very similar to the ipod functions.

I have the car kit and that definitely helps for me, however, I am having problems recording the shows that I want. I've set it up 4 times to record Howard at 3 a.m. and it has not recorded one time, it says that it will wake up from sleep mode to record, but it has not.

As far as reception, with the car kit, I haven't had any problems at all. I haven't really tried it from inside the house yet, but I have been using the WiFi streams and it works perfect

One thing that bothers me is that if you plug in the antenna headphones, it blocks the power cord port, so if you do get a signal inside with the headphones, you are limited, because you can't supply the unit with the power needed.

I gave this 4 stars because it is 100 times better than the Kenwood Here2Anywhere receiver. I hope this review was helpful.

    I'm gettin an ipod

Written By Tannia, Knoxville, TN on Monday, January 01, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I first learned about this product I was very excited. Being able to recieve live broadcasts in a compact package and the ability to record the songs or programs that I like was a dream come true.

In order to give Sirius a chance to work the bugs out I waited until Christmas to purchase it. Upon opening the package, I was very pleased with the user interface and the overall look of the product. And then I tried to access the satellite radio.

I had to stand in the middle of my street in 30 degree weather to get a single bar of reception just to create an account with Sirius. I gave the product a week to impress. Being a very active person I tried the radio in multiple places looking for some sort of signal. I am rarely at home (though it did not work there either), and it had no signal at work or at the gym. To top it off it only stores less than 1GB of personal music.

Overall it was a huge disappointment, and I am trading it in for an ipod.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this for Xmas and so far I am very pleased. The only complaint I have is that the satellite headphones hurt to wear and I hope someone comes out with a better version. The radio is awesome. WiFi works great and Sirius content rocks! I wish you could store songs when using WiFi, but no doubt, that is a copyright issue. The radio and Sirius content is excellent and if the headphones were better, this would get 5 stars.
